biden's story is one of triumph and tragedy of overcoming a childhood stutter to reach the u.s. senate just party years ago only to lose his wife and daughter in a car accident weeks later. in 2015 by who was again left bereft when his son died of brain cancer. i found the best way through pain and loss and grief is to find purpose. donald trump inherited a new york real estate empire and turned the neve into a brand. his life of waving his cocktail parties and marital affairs were talk of the tongue. gossip followed him everywhere and saw too did bankruptcies. but it was hit t.v.

2:07 pm
today let's get more we're joined by lives shoka u.s. policy analyst here in the studio welcome to the program thank you for having me you've been watching us politics very closely what is different about this election i think one of the most exciting things to happen in this election is the mobilization people that have never been involved all the sudden have access to virtual phone banks socially distance canvass saying so i think the sheer force of people on the ground is absolutely different in just bringing in a whole new set of voters who've never been activated before but i also think there's never been a more polarizing election and the stakes feel really high both by who wins but also what happens after top of this a little bit more about the polarization because that us of course been a long term trend in the u.s. and it's nothing new it as a trend but it has accelerated over the past 4 years. absolutely i think when folks are suffering they look for change and they look for answers and
2:08 pm
what happened is trump took absolute advantage of folks that were feeling like us versus them their way of life is changing jobs or changing their future or security is not the same and so they need a scapegoat they need someone to blame on the i'm verse is that you have the left kind of feeling more and more disenfranchised from the right they no longer see that common ground that it's so famous for you don't have that middle swing voter people are really entrenched and unfortunately the media plays a huge role in that people really become siloed they really only listen to their media and get their feedback and get real fired up and in these chambers that just makes the distance between both sides bigger every day and that system is also very apparent internationally we know that the world is watching this election you actually went out on the streets all over the world and got some perspective let's have a listen and then we'll get your reaction. when's because i really see him as
2:09 pm
a passion whose interest is in his country and not in politics or trying to do something to benefit to self. but official by the military i wouldn't like donald trump to win because his immigration policies are very strict and he separating many families for the moment being i know that biden is ahead of trump but it doesn't mean anything like last time hillary was ahead but still won so i can only hope and pray that trump will not have a 2nd term i suppose because i'm a businessman. a country you need to be a businessman i don't think shop is going to sway because something. is fear and i don't. i hope that democracy prevails and the majority are there this is. whatever it may be when we do.
2:10 pm
come election. we're building a new president there's a bill i'm going to that's the same time. america relationship. unless any issues relating to old or maybe do some problems which is already important i mean on being donor trumpet preventing because i don't think you over there is anywhere close to winning and the kind of all give done for america and that's been great if you don't lie hopefully that dump loses big time i think he should write a book on how to destroy a country in 40 years 100 destroy a country in 40 years which is what he's done i don't care who wins it's the americans in the business. i don't have expectations i just hope the relationship between the u.s. and china will be peaceful louisiana that you don't suit don't you and i sure in terms of politics doesn't own anything taiwan can benefit more if trump wins you
2:11 pm
know turn to the financing could now white house because he's more and i hope he tends to balance china. it doesn't matter who wins we were there unpredictable and a bit sit removed we knew that us presidents are just puppet to speak in a strange voice so i have no expectations. but some really interesting perspectives from around the world we have to say there is interest certainly in this election to what extent has foreign policy been present on the campaign trail to what extent is it part of what voters are looking at when they do go to the polls so i think what we're seeing from the biden camp is a director a bottle of the last 4 years we're talking about saving the american reputation abroad however i'm just not sure when there's an economic crisis and a health crisis happening at the same time voters have foreign policy at the top of their agenda there's been
2:12 pm
a lot of conversation i love some of the reactions from folks in iran and china and those those issues are absolutely present in voters' minds but i worry that sometimes it's less about the nuance that is required in foreign policy and more and us versus them mentality that's happening on one side where. it's america 1st and so that's driving a certain set of the voters to the polls this election extraordinary in so many ways not least of which the fact that it's taking place during a pandemic that means that some of the results might be delayed in some states what do you expect if the result is narrow if the results is delayed i think we're in for several days i know both sides have been absolutely mobilizing their lawyers i heard talk of the biden camp mobilizing or going to events and volunteers around protecting the vote there's a huge campaign right now to wait for the results i think there's
2:13 pm
a push to recognize a lot of misinformation might be out there and we really do have to wait i recently read that they're probably not to call pennsylvania before friday. and that's the most likely tipping point state and so we have to wait on the actual real results not jump on the 1st month's misinformation that might happen and hope that folks kind of have that patience and don't just react suddenly thank you so much u.s. policy analyst today on the day when americans go to the polls to vote for the new u.s. president we appreciate it thank you for having me. well austria has declared 3 days of national mourning after a gun attack in central vienna killed at least 4 people suspected islam is a gunman opened fire at multiple locations in the city center on monday evening police say that they shot killed one attacker and are hunting one or more assailants still of larch the chancellor sebastian kurtz called it a repulsive terror attack and vowed not to let it divide the country. it's the

morning after in vienna and the city is on edge a huge manhunt is taking place behind the scenes and last night's events have caused a sleepless night for many. from i didn't sleep i feel awful. i still feel the panic. i'm nervous and worried that i live in the neighborhood next to al gotten from there you could hear a lot. of strain as government has declared monday's shootings the terror attack and says at least one of the assailants had an islamist motive. so to me cleverly peace treaty it's now been confirmed that yesterday's attack was very clearly an islamist terrorist attack. the attack was launched on monday evening with people fleeing in panic as gunfire broke out in multiple locations in

the city center. many people were out and about at the time enjoying one last evening in bars and restaurants before a nationwide coronavirus curfew. starting in british and figures that i was inside and suddenly some customers came in and told me don't go out there's a gun battle going on i looked outside and heard shots in a few seconds 15 to 20 shots for sure seems to answer she says that. the 1st gunshots were reported near the end as main synagogue a rabbi so a man opened fire. cracker running in various rooms around dog or a street. running away. through attackers arm chasing them or to the street they were shooting at least 100 rounds just before the program. one gunmen was shot dead by police the

government says he was wearing a fake explosive belt and had a previous terror conviction. the attack i was a sympathizer of the terror group islamic state. the day after at least one other a sale and is still thought to be at large. the end as residents have been urged to stay at home while the manhunt continues and as a country and shop begins 3 days of mourning to another victims of monday's attack . and we are joined now by margaret gilmore a security and terrorism expert in london welcome to the program we have reports of multiple locations of potentially several attackers does this appear to you to be a coordinated attack and if so is it a failure of intelligence very difficult that you're. the authorities have. at least one of them have been jailed and been released in
2:17 pm
general less than a year ago and he is in jail or it's linked to islamic state and for terrorist. linked crimes so in that respect you really expected him to be very much watched some day and it would be difficult for him operate what we all seeing is just as you have described at all of all marks a crisis a cell a small group of people who got together who've managed to obtain guns which is relatively easy in europe they can come across the border from the old soviet countries or even through russia that getting able to get hold of arms through criminal means and they have decided to attack today said yesterday i should say several of them at the same time and they clearly to have these the terrorist ideology if you like that we talk with us
2:18 pm
a little bit about the timing because i mean one more call we saw of recently several terror attacks in france could the timing be linked here. there is always a working assumption when i terrorist attack takes place that 2 things could happen one is because copycats more likely that other cells who are in preparation 1st will gain a bit of confidence but secondly want to keep up the momentum and they will be being urged to do so by anybody who might know what they're doing will be controlling them for example from the middle east from perhaps syria where there is a small core of isis illustrators and leaders urging people to carry out attacks so you would be on the lookout for that and you would expect that the intelligence agencies across europe and globally will have put out and saying watch we need to be on added alert there is this resurgence we've had
2:19 pm
a relatively quiet patch but now we need to start looking again and being a little bit cautious and certainly these attacks again they have there is another timing factor in australia that they were about to i believe go into lockdown again so people are rushing in you know as as is happening in the u.k. at the moment making most of the last few days before the shops restaurants etc shut down say they were out there absolutely cynically targeting people when the most number of people in public. so that's the big picture on unfortunately there are back to vienna because we've heard at least one attacker is likely still at large what would a thorny is what will counterterrorism experts be looking to do now. right so as we speak well i'm just hearing rumors that maybe somebody really 90 days and i'm
2:20 pm
not in a position. to what have you but yes shuttle shops which is what they've done if somebody is out and about that they are. absolutely on to see. the. intelligence agencies will be looking at the names of all the contacts not of the people they killed there like an awful lot about that terrorist who has been named a new car lot and they will be looking to find out who his associates where at work and where any particular associates might have been living the night have family night have gone into hiding and they will go and they will find this guy very quickly they always do but he will be highly dangerous just because one the one who was killed i believe had a fake suicide vest on doesn't mean to say the other doesn't have access to explosives he's clearly armed and extremely dangerous so.
2:21 pm
keeping everybody out of the way shutting down the shops telling the public to stay inside asking around in the countries around australia for any intelligence they may have relate to this picked a particular person and then going and targeting this doesn't that's the number one priority before there are any more deaths barbagallo more security and terrorism expert thank you so much for joining us to share that insight. now let's take a look at some other stories making news around the world a 4 year old girl has been rescued from the probable of destroyed buildings in western turkey almost 4 days after a large earthquake and the death toll in the quake has now reached 102 with more than a 1000 injured 2 children were rescued from the debris on monday. the french defense minister says that her country's forces have killed more than 50 jihad this aligned

mexico's day of the dead festival has drawn to a close and this year's celebrations were unusually muted due to the pen demick normally family members gathered to remember and those who have died with 90000 mexicans dead from cova 19 many parades were canceled some cemeteries were closed to visits because of fears of spreading the coronavirus. of germany's intensive care units are bracing for an expected increase in covert patience as the number of new infections hits record levels germany has weathered the pandemic so far without pushing its hospitals to the limit but now the country has gone back into partial lockdown in the hope of heading off the chancellor angela merkel is calling an acute emergency situation. this patient has been in a coma for over a week his condition is so serious that he has to be artificially ventilated is 48 years old and one of 19 intensive care patients at this hospital in. the 2nd wave
2:24 pm
of coded 19 has arrived and it's different to the 1st. in the area where we have a lot of older patients in the 1st wave some young ones too but now they're almost all young which means at age 50 or more you. and there's another difference to what happened in spring the hospital is treating more seriously ill patients from neighboring belgium the hospital's head of medicine says belgium took too long to introduce new stricter measures against coated. belgium is an example of what happens when these decisions are made too late there isn't enough capacity so we're taking in more and more belgian patients. during the 1st wave just under 50 patients were on ventilators at this hospital at any one time putting a huge strain on all of the staff but they're benefiting now from the huge amount
2:25 pm
of experience they gained. we had standardized procedures last time. i will reactivating those standardized procedures having these standards is very beneficial even if we get more patients we can just implement them. how well the system copes with the 2nd wave also depends on staff availability and there are shortages already caused by start getting infected with the virus by having to go into quarantine. and those on the frontline of the fight against cove it haven't really recovered from the 1st wave. and from argument we're in summer even if we had vacation time we were here there was no real time off and after the 1st wave we still had to deal with normal cases and also all the paperwork that was left from the 1st wave not by the others because. there's little time to relax because the number of patients who are
2:26 pm
seriously ill with covert 19 is set to rise again experience to show that 2 percent of covert patients end up in intensive care. so there will be more i'm expecting more intensive care patients than in the 1st wave. they were just under $3000.00 then i'm afraid it's going to be more this time. here in our hand they're hoping to rise to the challenge all the way through the 2nd wave but the demands on all of them will be great. this is deja vu news to live from berlin a reminder of our top stories austria has declared 3 days of national mourning after at least 4 people were killed in a mass shooting in central vienna the austrian government says that it was an islamist terror attack the gunman opened fire at multiple locations in the city center on monday evening. and person voting has begun in the u.s. election where residents of a tiny contempt churchtown were the 1st to cast their ballots after midnight
