fascism vote for american freedom vote for america 1st vote for make america great again. both candidates have cost themselves as america's salvation but the truth is in this high speak bottle the results will reverberate well beyond her borders. as we have the latest and from d.w. correspondents. a new washington welcome rushed i found so we've got a a day of voting followed by a long night of counting are we likely to know the result by this time tomorrow. short answer probably not at least not officially the official calendar of the votes takes a little bit of time remember this is a historic day all 100000000 people 100000000 people already voted before today that's a starkly huge number and those ballots which are already in the polling stations are in india institutions and departments where they are counted already then they
3:16 pm
have to be counted some of them are only or a lot of them actually starting to be counted today and that's an awful lot of ballots to be counted so an official result of that is actually quite usual for the united states here we didn't have and other elections also you official results it's the t.v. networks and the pollsters who called the winner early about official results likely not to be happening tomorrow at this time will there be a network or many networks and polls this calling a winner by tomorrow this time. i don't know maybe that's the best you can get out of me and maybe a solid maybe it's really not clear there's a lot of voting count valid to count the vote count going on and it has to be done to really really firmly call a state or. an overall result for the elections ok and what should we expect from these these old important to swing states that a so important for these counted is. yeah there as you said they are
3:17 pm
really important it is those states where actually the math is done and what has voting to do with math well you know the united states has an electoral college and the popular vote. will define what's votes what the amount of votes of the electoral college will go to what candidate for president candidate so if for example trump or biden do not win north carolina pennsylvania wisconsin michigan minnesota then there is a problem those states carry heavy or at least a decent electoral college vote number amount so they need them but you know those other swing states too for example and that's a surprise this year at this cycle election cycle is arizona that was solidly red solidly g.o.p. trump country now not so much anymore florida all essential they both kind of have
3:18 pm
to weigh when florida otherwise if trump doesn't win florida and loses one of those states i mentioned before the so-called blue wall which doesn't exist anymore because he won them in 2016 well then he is in trouble right stephanie simmons for now thank you so much well it's not just at home the donald trump divides opinion with his america 1st policy isn't to brush style on the diplomatic stage it's also polarized opinions outside the u.s. the w. has been asking people around the world who they hope will win politically i mean. i hope when's because i really see him as a patriotic past and his interest is in his country and not in politics or trying to do something to benefit to myself. but official by the military i wouldn't like donald trump to win because his immigration policies are very strict and he's separating many families for the moment being i know that biden is ahead of trump
3:19 pm
but it doesn't mean anything like last time hillary was ahead but still trump won so i can only hope and pray that trump will not have a 2nd term i suppose because i'm a businessman. the country you need to be a businessman i don't think trump is going to be elections why because trump is. fierce and i don't. i hope that democracy prevails and the majority. this is sure. whatever it may be when we do. elections we're getting a new president who's a bit on them told us the same. america. nation should. pass any issues relating to older middle east some problems which is already
3:20 pm
important in their own being donor trumpet preventing because i don't think your vision is anywhere close to winning and the kind of work is done for america and that's been if you don't hear from i hope that dump loses big time i think he should write a book on how to destroy a country in 40 years or 100 destroy a country in 40 years which is what he's done i don't care who wins the american dream business. i don't have expectations i just hope the relationship between the u.s. and china will be peaceful luis in that you don't suit the don't you and i saw in terms of politics now many think taiwan can benefit more if trump wins you know turn to the one thing called the white house because he's more than now if he tends to balance china. our hero is here cause us and it doesn't matter who wins both are unpredictable and a bit sick with we know that us presidents are just puppet to speak in a streams of voice so i have no expectations of them but i'm assuring years ago.

take a look at some more of those stories from around the world now starting in poland where women's groups of protests there for a 12th day over a quarter ruling that bans abortions in cases of fetal defects as one of the last legal grounds to end a pregnancy in this story the catholic country the protests of give no wider voice to anger as poland's conservative government. nicaragua and honduras serve brain moving people to safety is how it can at best down on their atlantic coast forecasters are warning of massive flooding and landslides they say the storm packing winds of more than 240 kilometers an hour could whip up waves of more than 5 meters high. mexico's day of the dead festival has drawn to a close with celebrations unusually muted because of the pandemic in normal times
3:22 pm
family members gathered to remember those who died but we trained with 900000 mexicans killed in the covered 19 pandemic i mean parades were cancelled and some cemeteries closed to visits. i germany's intensive care units are bracing for an expected increase in coffin patients as the number of new infections its record levels of germany has weathered the pandemic a so far without pushing its hospitals to the limit but now the country has gone back into partial lockdown in the hope of heading off what chancellor merkel has cole called an acute emergency situation. this patient has been in a coma for over a week his condition is so serious that he has to be artificially ventilated he's 48 years old and one of 19 intensive care patients at this hospital in our home a 2nd wave of cavite 19 has arrived and it's different to the 1st. ringback in the
3:23 pm
earthmen we have a lot of older patients in the 1st wave some young ones too but now they're almost all young which means age 15 or younger. and there's another difference to what happened in spring the hospital is treating more seriously ill patients from neighboring belgium the hospital's head of medicine says belgium took too long to introduce new stricter measures against cove it. if. jim is an example of what happens when these decisions are made too late there isn't enough capacity so we're taking in more and more belgian patients. during the 1st wave just under 50 patients were on ventilators at this hospital at any one time putting a huge strain on all the staff but they're benefiting now from the huge amount of experience they gained. we
3:24 pm
had standardized procedures last time. i will reactivate you know standardized procedures having these standards is very beneficial even if we get more patients we can just implement them. how well the system copes with the 2nd wave also depends on staff availability and there are shortages already caused by start getting infected with the virus or having to go into quarantine. and those on the frontline of the fight against covert haven't really recovered from the 1st wave. and were in summer even if we had vacation time we were here there was no real time off and after the 1st wave we still had to deal with normal cases and also all the paperwork that was left from the 1st wave not by the others because. there's little time to relax because the number of patients who are seriously ill with coverage 19 is set to rise again experience to show that 2 percent of covert patients end up in
3:25 pm
intensive care. so there will be more i'm expecting more intensive care patients than in the 1st wave. they were just under $3000.00 then i'm afraid it's going to be more this time. here in our hand they're hoping to rise to the challenge all the way through the 2nd wave but the demands on all of them will be great. before we go here's a curious case of life imitating art in the netherlands metra train ran off the rails in rotterdam and was saved from plunging 10 meters to the ground by a sculpture called saved by the whilst tail the driver was the only person on board and he scraped and harmed the next chapter in this way of the fatalities working out how to safely remove the train from the lifesaving otta. this is the news life from his reminder of our top story austria has declared 3

a very brutal pair of your years right sure. that our 2 part series the 3rd reich the dark starts november 12th on d w. you're watching t.w. news asia coming up today it's election day in an election week and we sat down with india's foreign secretary harshvardhan shing law to discuss his country's important relationship with the united states we also asked him about 2 of india's was just a cult relationships pakistan and china. i'm melissa chan welcome to news asia thank you for joining us it's election day in the

united states and today and all this week we'll be looking at the impact of the vote on countries across asia one of the most important relationships for the u.s. in the entire pacific is it's in gage meant with india the 2 countries together with japan and australia from part of what is known as a quad for democracies in a clear counterpoint to china the region's large authoritarian state we sat down with. india's foreign secretary harshvardhan to discuss regional politics we started by asking him whether there'd be any change with a biden presidency especially given president dollar trump and prime minister narendra modi's great personal admiration for each other over relations with the united states really based on bipartisan support you see it in congress you see it you know and public levels we do believe that we've forged a relationship that truly is has withstood the test of time is is very
3:32 pm
comprehensive and marcie faceted. we not only share the same values and principles but we also i think have the same city to vision in what could be a biological reason or multilateral relationship now by mr moore these relationship with president trump have been special but you have to remember that promise them all these relationship with president obama was also very special i remember that state dinner that president obama held. in my correct and hearing that you believe that regardless of who wins the presidency of the united states the relationship will fundamentally not change. vice president biden who is the democratic candidate has also made it very clear in many of his statements that he values a strong india u.s. strategic partnership so that is common to both president trump and president by now i want to talk a little bit about the quad and the recent meeting there you have australia japan

and knighted states in india like minded countries that their shared value of being democracies i imagine that if you were sitting in beijing it kind of looks like encircled mint how would you respond to people who say that. well. the chord is a grouping of countries which have the same vision of a free open transparent in the pacific region an international rules based order. international the freedom of navigation in global commons and also issues such as open connectivity respecting the sort of indian territory and dignity of states you seem to be working to bolster the capacities and the abilities of countries in the pacific with as it's in tragedy in a manner that is what constructive and for peter you mentioned open connectivity
3:34 pm
and borders let's talk about borders 1st on the last 24 hours there's been a report in bloomberg about the fact that some 300 square kilometers that used to be administered by india is now administered by china and i'd be interested in your response or comment to that report. clearly there believe that you know the. situation has involved some level of deterioration in terms of. it has contributed asian in terms of the ties between our 2 countries because of the unusual step of china to seek to you need to actually order the status quo you have to keep in mind that there is no common perception of the border but here if you seek to change the current you know playing with troops then of course it does impact on the larger vision should we are concerned that china has taken this step. very very
3:35 pm
clear that we will stand firm and visit you in our resolve not to allow our territorial integrity or sovereignty to be compromised but i want to make sure do you confirm or deny the characterization from the reports that china is actually administrate 300 kilometers square kilometers more of territory that they did not have at the start of this year which i'm not aware of where the bloomberg is getting its information from but i can tell you that as far as we are concerned says indian officials familiar with the situation you're asking me and i'm telling you that as far as we're concerned we will not compromise on our dignity and i want to ask about another neighbor of yours in terms of relationships up pakistan's prime minister imran khan recently called india a fascist state inspired by the nazi regime this is what he said to a german news outlet what is your response to that well i can only see that is coming from the prime minister of a country that does not recognize the state of israel that still no does not

acknowledge that the holocaust took place that has provided the see if same should be forced on bin laden and mullah omar of the taliban. yos after $911.00 a country that today has a date which is higher than the g.d.p. a country that has enormous social economic problems and political problems not with an entire coalition of all the opposition parties seeking to unseat prime minister iran and those who back him from the deep state and it is clearly an attempt to distract international attention and domestic attention from his own problems that iran contra making the statement i mean i mean considering his situation and pakistan's own approach towards radicalism terrorism and issues that are important to the international community he really shouldn't be making such irresponsible statements you allow me this question as someone who's born in hong
3:37 pm
kong. you talk about rules based a lot of rules can be interpreted you have been broken in hong kong is this a matter of concern for india as a matter of policy we don't comment on on what becomes the internal affairs of state we have said that there is a large community of indian origin there's a large indian community in hong kong so we are watching the situation with some level of attention. and concern and we will continue to do so. secretary thank you very much thank you so very much melissa. we have a non-christian an inch and i joining us to provide more context following our interview with the foreign secretary he is the hindus china correspondent and also the author of india's china challenge on for we just heard the foreign secretary there not really giving a clear response about whether china really did capture all that territory your thoughts. i think melissa it is understandable for 2 reasons i think
3:38 pm
the 1st is negotiations are ongoing that set in really unsuccessful rounds of talks at the military level that have gone nowhere and i think that that's why they're being a little conic i think that the 2nd reason is it is a domestic political issue in india and the modi government has been coming out of fire from the opposition for really knocked over handling that china problem at the border citing the government doesn't really want to come out and say that lost so much territory but i think from my own point of view melissa right from the start it think that the government really could have been a little bit more transparent and it could actually help india dealing with this by showing to the word that it was china didn't occupy the senate she and sought to redraw the line of actual control and the government could have actually publicly taken a stand it toward china listen these are the deadlines we have to return to status quo so i think i find it a little puzzling why the government's actually been sort of locked into actually
3:39 pm
spell out what actually down the restoration is a long line of actual control and where china is meeting grasses and occupied territory. do you think there's a lack of trust on the indian side when they look at the activities of the chinese and the south china sea that they can never really speak to the chinese and come up with a resolution on the border issue but unfortunately melissa that's the only way i don't think either country really wants a conflict and as difficult as it is i think it's going to be a combination of continuing to talk of b.d.s. levels between military commanders between diplomats in beijing and delhi but at the same time keeping up a very fond defensive posture as india has done and in the vicinity actually occupied several strategic rights that have given it somebody in power the negotiations that it did not have previously so i think the whole both sides can find a meeting of minds but i think there is to some skepticism in india that china after mobilizing all these troops in early may really walk back from all turkey that gain
3:40 pm
i think that's something that is going to be very difficult for india to achieve of return the status quo which is what india has publicly demanded while this is election week so i'm curious do you agree with secretary assessment that the bilateral relationship between india and the u.s. won't change where the guy less of who wins at the tram providing. i would draw army agree that i think that the sec sort of our motivations in a resolution ship won't change it's quite interesting melissa that india is a bit unique among many countries and actually having quite a far and a sort of experience dealing with some of the last 4 years they have been issues on trade i mean who hasn't had issues with jump on trade but in terms of the defense relationship in terms of the city relationship actually they gave us missions are best done tell you well i'm not on trial but and with the prime minister modi just one at that instant that just last week the week before the election now you had secretary of state my point there and the defense secretary markets were come to
3:41 pm
delhi for talks just a week before the election and i think the message really was with us that this is going to be a long term strategic relationship and the fact that they signed this for a really important military defense agreement for sharing geospatial information i think really shows how even though they are officially allies there is a very close defense partnership that is growing even more close and we're going even more stronger and it got most of us from a bite in the white house i think that is going to continue they's going to be broader concern to even if there will be some differences and i think one minor point of concern to india is a democratic administration tends to be more out spoken on issues such as human rights situation in question is something red really didn't want to get involved so i think they mean government is aware there will be small changes but i think there is a realization that the broader quantiles of the relationship really have a bipartisan resonance in washington right now and i think that's a huge positive for the india a solution ship and a sign of how much has grown over the last 1015 years where else do you see the
3:42 pm
u.s. and india working together. i think on this one big gap is when it comes to economic cooperation i think that india us all said enterprise quieted down quite a bit in terms of security dies they want to be having huge exercises the malabar naval exercises this leak where the only i think they have lagged behind isn't actually coming up until writing an alternative to countries in the region in asia when it comes to financing whether over land on chinese financing still even though there has been some pushback to the belt and the order to ship we have from countries such as sri lanka port insensed where else can they go also spawning there really aren't many other sources besides china and i think you know the other countries should step up if they really want to provide a credible alternative to china in the region russia actually must say they haven't done us and i'm question thank you. that's it for now be

culture of looking at stereotypes the question interesting to see if the countries that i don't. feel needed to be taken as grandma they are to me it's all that they know i'm rachel join me for me to be a. post. is it that hard to wear a must. it's not if you've lost a loved one to cope at 19 and understand the gravity of this pandemic but for people with no connection to the coronavirus it's easier to say that all these health precautions are over the top and despite the science. when there are surveys that show that men are less likely to wear masks than women some claim it robs their manhood. experts put it down to talk sick masculine. ity.

in the west they said mosques start really protect you then they said they do and you've got to wear them whatever the case if it means i'm less likely of passing on something i'll do it a lot of other men so willing there are lots of selfish people in this world but what about when the masculinity in question here is that of the most powerful president in the world. has this report. on election day the u.s. is battling another surge in coronavirus cases the number of new delhi recorded cases has been reaching record highs. some i.c.u. units in the us are already approaching 90 percent of their capacity. well things are very very bad in the united states right now we're having some of the largest outbreaks that we've had and i think.
