it was like you know inside the but day this morning i broke down and cried because of the possibility that trent might be in office again. across several states votes are still being counted the majority of them have been sent in by post and in this election costing a vote by mail has been favored by many democrats every vote must be counted no is going to take our democracy away from us not now not ever. america has come too far america's far too many battles americans endure too much ever let that happen. but republicans 7 claim these parties to invite some man to electoral fraud with donald trump accusing democrats of trying to steal the election. trump's top lawyer is promising legal action the push. pull you know the

democrats do because you do think your. call deplorable. so. we're going to stick with this we're going to win this election with. just a matter of counting the votes. it may come down to the courts to decide who wins this election the closest fought battle for the white house in 20 years. so let's take a look at the current state of play with a closer look at the states that haven't yet clad figures show biden on 264 on president trump on 214 electoral college votes 270 the winning post say a michigan was the last states to drop into the biden column it's 16 electoral votes which trump one in 2016 now go to his democratic challenger to wisconsin they came in for biden with another 10 electoral votes trump one

wisconsin full years ago both campaigns pull huge resources into the state now it's around votes that are still being counted by the a.p.a. news agency which is our main source of election data ice cold arizona for biden the other major outlets haven't yet called it 11 college votes up for grabs that joe biden currently has a slim lead in nevada which has the 6 votes that he needs for the win. on to georgia 16 electoral votes on the table there and trump is in the lead but look at how slim that difference is. about what a lead has narrowed significantly and the top campaign has now filed a lawsuit alleging that ineligible late absentee ballots may have been added to the count now to pennsylvania which is the biggest prize still up for grabs 20 electoral votes up for grabs there donald trump currently has a narrow lead for the remaining mail in ballots thoughts to favor that democrats so

with votes still being counted donald trump's path to victory appears to have narrowed states in the red or blue have been called by a pink for trump or biden states in the light blue or in pink being towards biden or chum respectively. ok let's get an update from washington now will join the t w correspondent soon we some risk on that welcome sir let's start with that georgia race margin of victory that a razor thin how surprising is it. well phil you know you mentioned that that lead is getting slimmer we've just gotten some new numbers in from georgian president trump is ahead right now by just around 14000 votes it was 18000 votes so this margin is really narrowing and to answer a question it's pretty surprising don't forget the georgia hasn't gone for a democrat in a presidential race since 1992 this is a staunchly republican state it lead to lease it has been but this is not the

georgia 1902 either it is getting more urban younger more latinos so that has been redrawing the political map a little bit in georgia and that is what we're seeing it is also why we saw both president trump and joe biden and their surrogates stumping heavily in georgia ahead of this election with a big presence on the road with rallies there both sides now see this as a battleground state which is pretty astonishing i can say that also we could possibly get the remaining votes so so now less than 60000 by the end of the day today possible but again georgian state officials are stressing that they are moving as fast as they possibly can they do not want to make mistakes they want to make sure they're being accurate so it might take a little bit longer we're hoping however to have some more results today ok now the campaigns just announced the but they've got a court order among them access to vote counting in philadelphia so let's hear what they have to say. does the market see dots and dog in the opportunity like what's
6:08 pm
going on building more observe what you need to be 16 minute every word is counting the votes get a good. no win for every person has nothing. in the state of pennsylvania we're going to hear right now watching what's going on not go 30 feet away from you no way from me to way to tell me what you think the democrats are going to try and stop them from. feel there's nothing they don't want the american people those going on in here not to serve me so much conversely what's the latest from pennsylvania. well that court order that was referenced there that allows this team to go into this convention center in philadelphia and observe the process where vote counting has taken place but i should note that the trump campaign is calling this a win it's not actually that unusual there are representatives of both the republicans and the democrats observing vote counting across the country right now that is allowed but something we have heard there are some media reports that vote
6:09 pm
counting in that convention center in philadelphia has stopped now we have not been able to confirm that phil so we really cannot say if that is definitely true but of course that would be significant news if vote counting has stopped their release remember that pennsylvania rather is a key here for both candidates so we're keeping our eye on that and we have a team in philadelphia trying to find out what's happening there as for those lawsuits that we've seen launched by president trump's campaign i mean legal observers here do not think that they will have a big outcome in the election because we have not seen any proof of irregularities or fraud and of these legal challenges that have been launched there over a very small amount of votes so it doesn't look like that will change the outcome of the election but again if it is indeed true which we haven't confirmed yet that vote counting has been paused in philadelphia that could be very significant let's go into on his own which the associated press has called for by even though the

county still ongoing is not going to lead how do you read about race. this is a really fascinating race still and it's going to be very very tight so president trump is definitely narrowing the lead as you said and it's coming down to this one county maricopa county where votes are still being tallied as we speak and this is also where we saw around 200 president from supporters armed showing up to voice their support and make sure that their votes are counted because they had heard rumors that their votes were being discarded which is not the case so tensions are really high there as of now joe biden leads the way there with around 68000 votes at around 200000 votes are still being counted so we don't know which way this is going to go it's going to come right down to the wire both democrats and republicans are hopeful that arizona will go their way they figure that sooner some is going to in washington do better in mind that states have until the 8th of

december to deliver results not supposed to help got to see the votes counted it's no doubt a safe harbor day because any state result delivered after that term be challenged and the last time that happened was 20 years ago i mean that's that was ultimately decided by the supreme court. november 2000 republican presidential candidate george w. bush seems to win florida but the results are so close that the rules demand a recount the whole election hangs in the balance democratic candidate al gore request a manual recount in certain counties. recounting by hand took a long time. a legal battle slowed vote counting down and the state overshot the safe harbor date december 8th this allowed the bush campaign to ask the supreme court to stop a new statewide recount which it did bush was declared the winner by a margin of just a few 100 votes. fast forward to this
6:12 pm
november another election without an immediate result the established law in some states is that counting early and mail in ballots can only start on the election day and this year the corona pandemic meant millions of people voted that way counting all these ballots takes guess what a long time. we don't know how long yet but that december 8th safe harbor deadline is starting to become visible on the horizon. president trump has already said he intends to use lawsuits to slow down or stop state counts which could push them past the safe harbor date and make them vulnerable to challenges his 1st comments after polls close pointed towards this he falsely said counting votes after election day was illegal. we were getting ready to win this election frankly we did win this election i was

a major fraud nation we want the lord to be used in a proper manner so we'll be going to the u.s. supreme court his democratic opponent joe biden had been expecting this and tried to take the wind out of trump's sails were you because of the on pressure down early vote in a mail in vote is going to take a while we're going to have to be patient until the hard work of talent votes is finished. if undeclared states miss the safe harbor date while there's still no overall result the u.s. congress and supreme court could get involved bringing back memories of the bitterly divided 2000 contest. let's take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world the european union has agreed a mechanism to cut funding to member states that don't uphold the rule of law those who still needs to be approved by the european parliament would mean countries only

press agency has called arizona for mr biden for him just 6 electoral college votes away from the all important 270 he needs to win the other day after yes to call that state's male votes are still being counted in georgia and pennsylvania where donald trump's lead east wind his campaign has launched legal challenges that in michigan. that's it your updates i'll have more on the top of the hour then facility is next with i didn't. the fight against the corona virus pandemic. has the rate of infection in developing what does the latest research say. information and context the coronavirus of day 19. on t w. world 6. to go beyond the obvious.

marine live. as we take on the world. we're all about the stories that matter to you country. what ever it is to. get. out of d.w. made for mines. the 2nd wave is crashing over europe and intensive care capacity is close to breaking point. germany could hit its limit next month france and switzerland my crack by mid-month. belgium could overrun capacity this week or next. what seemed like huge investments to expand hospital capacity now look
6:17 pm
totally inadequate. warning bells should have been ringing in early july after the spring lock downs were east but only a few recognised the vibrations that heralded a tsunami of new cases. the experts warned us and for many countries the 2nd wave is already more savage than the 1st health systems are running at the limit in parts of eastern and western europe in belgium doctors and nurses. struggling to keep up the incidence of coronavirus cases there was the highest in europe at 3956 per 100000 people. this used to be the recovery room for patients who'd had surgery now it serves as a makeshift intensive care unit for cope with 10000 patients on life support hospitals of the building province of lea is are now the epicenter of europe's 2nd wave and struggling to keep up we are not able to admit one new profession anymore
6:18 pm
so if a patient comes in the emergency room with a 3 we have to run through. the finish both of them will be old so forth devo tells us his team is not only short of beds but also personnel one in 5 nurses in the region have tested positive for the virus themselves but the pressure is so high that those who don't have symptoms continue to work on a strict safety precautions doctors and nurses here are working tirelessly to take care of covert 900 patients some of them are even infected themselves but despite all efforts the health care system here in belgium has reached its breaking point as the overall number of infections continues to rise in the actual number of infections is likely to be higher than the official figures across town at least as university hospital testing is ongoing. i can't smell or taste
6:19 pm
any more and i have a headache. because medics year can conduct 280 tests every day but these tests are strictly for those who have a doctor's prescription family members friends or coworkers who have been in close contact with them but don't show any symptoms cannot get a test for them or as the moment we have so many positive cases the problem is there are far too many contacts persons given the huge number of people who have symptoms we'd be unable to test them as well as all the people they've been in contact with at least not with the amount of tests we have currently if we had more tests we probably could back in the covert ward doctor duvall fears the lax handling of the crisis in summer will put him and his colleagues in a very difficult position very soon when you have only one bet and 10 people out of a thing for the same bit you have to choose between the team but which one you are after. want to do that's one thing it's like you know we all know
6:20 pm
a doctor to do that kind of thing we all looked up to treat patients with which patient treatment in germany has started to take patients from belgian hospitals with infections expected to continue to rise here in the coming weeks the medical staff already at their limit will need all the help they can get. so you want to is with st joseph's hospital and who decide what sort of capacity does germany have to take on patients from other countries right now. well we haven't ever it's nearly twice as much as you bet spec up a tad and the rest of europe. and caribbean germany are on 75 percent of the german i.c. you bet. so there is still a place room to move and we could take patients especially in border. regions in germany from other european countries but they are regions
6:21 pm
also in germany where the free capacity is below 10 percent and intensive care patients have to be moved to other hospitals and that binds intensive care physicians which is a very scots resource so when you think of pessah to use you have to keep in mind that the peak i.c.u. utilization we 2 weeks after infections have peaked and there they haven't yet so there's still a marathon to go with when could they be well nobody knows. it depends on how good the people. bind themselves to. the things. to stop being close together and to wear masks and stuff like that we have a new high. value today in germany. 20000 new infections this day how practical is that flying around coated patients from
6:22 pm
one hospital or country to the next. it's not very practical especially when they are empty it so you have to plan that in advance and try to bring patients who are not that's that's of the ill who haven't been on ventilation yet so it's not easy to plan that because patients we know that it's not good for patients being ventilated and they have to be brought on on the long term the stuff shortages we hear about in belgium in the netherlands i. see no sing homes and hospitals aust doctors and nurses to keep working if they tested positive but a symptom matic is that safe i think that should only be done in worst case scenario because the my r.t. of i.c.u. patients still do not have called it but other serious diseases and when these
6:23 pm
patients contract the guy iris from and checked it stat they are grave dangers so you have to keep in mind s. of to mattick people that doesn't mean they are healthy so we think we should prevent this and all staff has to say l.c. and get a quick l.c. and this is very important because if you have to let these people work with the virus it's really not sick why then is the e.u. not coordinating a concerted a joint approach where we see countries helping out each other but not everything having to be dealt with on a bilateral level well we could have that done that. methods let's say with the corona happy we could have done that from the beginning altogether. we didn't do that i don't know why would have been better i think so
6:24 pm
yes how foreseeable was all of this. the 2nd wave was clearly foreseeable people travel and they socialized enjoyed themselves in the summer and we have tried to do as much as we could by building and buying rest the ranges by training people but especially i.c.u. nurses. in all it all in europe a scarce resource and it takes 2 years training on top of the regular nurses training so kind of we have to work with what we've got and we have now in germany especially we have it's very important to take away paperwork from them so that they we need can spend all that time. with the patients and the other thing we could do is childcare you know to improve childcare in hospitals so especially during off hours what about high risk groups what else can be done to
6:25 pm
protect them so that they don't end up in intensive care in the hospitals. it's you have to reduce social contacts use of a p 2 must possibly and it jammed tests possibly but these measures make only sense when used together one is no substitute for the other and when you when we are talking about isolating risk groups we have to be an mind that. that in germany. the number are for germany at around 20 percent due to the demographics and due to the illnesses of our population belong to a risk group so targeting only risk groups with a corona structure to it will not work to something on a pleasure having you on the show today thank you very much thank you have a good day. if you want to hear more about europe's fight against code 19 in

people a day could soon be dying from the effects of undernourishment just to compare even on the very worst days for mortality so far and the pandemic there have never been more than 10000 tatts attributed to the virus in 24 hours i think that the most this yes aspect of this crisis is that with the exception of a few countries food is actually available in many of the places that are suffering most famine isn't being only driven by a lack of food but also by the simple fact that people no longer have the means to buy it the hunger crisis is not only expanding rapidly because of disruptions in supply chains although that's certainly contributing to the problem it's also due to dropping income many of the world's most vulnerable the poor who simply. can't
