sure apartment trees and saving pandas and more. exhaust birds and danger to survive or not survive surgical realize that there's a radically different way of living in this rather. than 4 time it starts nov 6th on t w. 2 days after the u.s. presidential election there is still no clear winner will donald trump remain in office or will it be judged by like a horse race updates of ballot counting in arizona pennsylvania nevada in georgia are keeping the world in suspense tonight the race to finish america's most important election and exercise in democracy that feels like watching the kentucky derby i'm burnt off in berlin this is the day.
9:31 pm
the presidency has literally placed in the ballots this is a race that we've been ahead of the expected all lines these are 159 elections directors employees who are here to do the job of protecting democracy as we look at the data that's outstanding we see a number of democratic counties that are yet to report we want to be able to make sure that accounting that occurs and that the results that proper could be respected by everywhere it can voter across this where. these people are not involved in voter fraud these people are not involved in voter suppression. also coming up the u.s. presidential election has become a global test of patience and nerves america's allies are hoping for a quick and peaceful resolution america's rivals are showing their shot in florida

and devilishly. and because kate that out of the a shortcomings in the american electoral system and science which international observers and pundits have pointed out many times this is pacitti to the archaic nature of the relevant legislation and a lack of regulation in a number of fundamental points as we've said many times already. it's you our viewers watching on p.b.s. in the united states and to all of you around the world welcome we begin the day ending another day waiting for the u.s. presidential election to end it has been more than 48 hours since the 1st polling places began closing on the u.s. east coast 48 hours that have produced more predictions about who will be 1st to declare victory 48 hours that have proven insufficient for counting all of the ballots just ask election officials in georgia north carolina and pennsylvania you
9:33 pm
could do the same in the western states of arizona and nevada ballot counting there continues as well in some but not all of these battleground states joe biden maintains a slight lead over president trump the biden campaign saying again today that they remain on track to win you hear the same message from president trump's campaign from trump's attorney you also hear promises of legal challenges and demands for recounts and outside the building where ballots are being counted around the clock you will also hear cheers and jeers police in phoenix arizona pushed back a group of trump supporters as they chanted outside a ballot counting center quote let us in these 159 elections directors and employees who are here do the job of protecting democracy. when you go to talk to them they think about that they think about the votes of every person and this for the country. these are people are not involved in voter fraud these people are not
9:34 pm
involved in voter suppression i'm telling you they're doing their jobs every day it's hard and we thank them for it we're going to work with them to make sure that every legal lawful ballot is counted. and so the battle continues g.w. used north america correspondent all over south joins me now from joe biden's home state of delaware of just outside of the bite and campaign headquarters in wilmington good to see you what are you hearing from your biden sources are they planning to declare victory within the next 24 hours. well joe biden brant is continuing to be very very optimistic we heard him speak on wednesday right behind me here at his headquarters where he said that once the counting is over he will be the new president of the united states and as you've just mentioned yourself he continues with this strong believe because as more and more valance are counted
9:35 pm
things are moving in the direction off joe biden that has to do with the very nature of the mail in ballots as we know most of them are votes for joe biden we've got some numbers there from pennsylvania for instance where currently 77 percent of the ballots counted are biden votes and we also heard that pennsylvania might be called as soon as tonight that would actually mean that the race is over at least if it's called for joe biden here that is for sure you know all over you and i we have talked about this very situation that the 2 candidates are in now waiting for every vote to be counted because the final result is expected to be so close other than losing the weight shift is this this situation is it the worst case scenario for the biden campaign. it's not looking like he's moving ride now at least joe biden but this was described before election day as a worst case scenario of course where we would not have
9:36 pm
a clear winner in election night and then they all 4 would see legal challenges afterwards so what we have right now is what they call the raj effect that you had leads of donald trump in several states and that once the mail in ballots get counted that this leave gets smaller and smaller and that certainly is a good opportunity for donald trump to spread false information and claims that are baseless and also proven to be baseless by international election observers of the o.e.c.d. oh very only can accrue from the w. studio washington talk to them on wednesday they make they make very clear that these accusations by the trump campaign are baseless but nevertheless we will have to see and continue counting or the counters have to do their job until we get the final results in the best case scenario would have been for the campaign by winning by a landslide need to finda did in 2 trump isn't in the u.s.
9:37 pm
even if biden wins the presidency now he will have to continue with donald trump's g.o.p. is there a plan for how to deal with this reality. now that's right because that scenario would mean that the republicans hold onto the senate of course and it would have been very helpful for the democrats to get control of both chambers of congress here the house of representatives and of the senate in order to be able to undo several trump policies which of course was the plan of joe biden so if they hold onto the senate the republicans and there will certainly block new legislation and that will be very difficult then for joe biden to govern nevertheless and that said these situations have been here before you know as well that barack obama as well as donald trump. governed with executive orders at times that might be a solution for joe biden to deal with the situation but of course it would lead
9:38 pm
into a rather unstable government now all over you know we can't forget the polls as they were terribly wrong this time just as they were in 2016 what is being said about that in the biden camp. well joe biden says do the counting right and we have might have some numbers right now that will be very different once the final swing states are counted and we might have a situation then if all those states are called for joe biden which is a possibility it's not guaranteed of course then that these polls were not as inaccurate as they might look right now and that set in 2016 hillary clinton started off with a very solid lead and that lead became smaller and smaller on election day she was with a lead of 2 to 3 percent and that was reflected also in the results she won the. popular vote but lost the election and therefore also these pollings were not as inaccurate as they seem as exactly right it's hard to believe but they were wrong 2
9:39 pm
times in the room. salix on the story for us tonight from delaware all over thank you. and as the last votes are being counted in a handful of states results already in revere reveal clear geographical voting patterns the electoral map shows the blue of the democrats holding sway in traditionally liberal states on the east and west coasts while republican rand dominates america's south and heartland there are exceptions but as a rule big cities vote democrat rural areas vote republican. little have in miami many people here are puerto donald's for the president. trump why. in florida hands down he began courting latinos in this battleground state early in the campaign in their language and to their beat.
9:40 pm
for a good life for the economy and the family. was . coming. to life we know fake promises when somebody says joe biden is basically giving a speech. while some warn against socialism others like these democrats speak of the need for social justice such as better health insurance coverage florida is split almost half of its electorate voted for joe biden and lost the other day the very republican. turned out a little bit better in some areas of the 5 so with africa it would be nationally. you know joe biden who won florida still when the president said. he constituencies
9:41 pm
who has the best chances where a simple voting pattern once again held up urban and rural america are worlds apart take texas the state has red but the republicans only narrowly won their support came mainly from rural counties the big cities austin houston san antonio dallas all voted for the democrats by large margins it is a phenomenon not limited to the southern states in ohio the more urban the county the more votes for the democrats that means different issues were important to voters. for trump supporters one topic was key. what he's done for our economy he's a businessman he brings a businessman approach. and the results are in the numbers i mean our economy was probably one of the best economies we've ever had in tells pandemic and. joe biden supporters have completely different concerns. a job is not to make it better if
9:42 pm
your mother died or your father died i think this is somebody will have to get a better grip on for our children and for all survive what direction is the us heading in now both democrats and republicans called this the most crucial election in the country's history across the nation voters felt the pressure. of her work it was a big relief. that are good but at the voting day is over with and we can all relax a little bit you know but not everyone can relax as the vote counting continues and the race in this deeply divided nation goes into extra time. for my next guest tonight is in the state it's in the vote counting spotlight tonight arizona bill silcock is assistant dean at the walter cronkite school of journalism at arizona state university he joins me from phoenix tonight bill it's good to have you back on the day arizona we know is known around the world as the the state of the late
9:43 pm
republican senator john mccain it is now a state that could be flipped and become a democrat stronghold talk to me about how this has happened well great question bret and it's good to be back with you. phoenix is changing arizona is changing we've got california is moving in here they bring their brand of politics and here we have an increasing population of latin x. and they have their own belief systems in their own political persuasions so that's going to change one of the i think it's most interesting that some of your viewers may not know i live out in the suburbs of phoenix out of the east valley a town called gilbert arizona and there are people around gilbert arizona traditionally republicans who actually voted very big for biting there were massive billboards sides electronic billboards when i would drive the 26 miles to downtown phoenix saying i'm john doe i'm a republican i'm voting for biden why the change i think coronavirus may have
9:44 pm
something to do with it there were other things as well i think there's people who are fed up with trump disgusted with him but his policies and what he has done in terms of changing the nature of the presidency and the global image of america but there's a lot of a lot of complicated reasons why but probably one of the big reasons also why you mentioned john mccain of course is this is state cindy mccain herself came out in a blitzing advertising campaign voting for joe biden encouraging others to follow suit with her that's very good for him with the daughter of senator john mccain you teach america's future journalist bill how do they view the state of american democracy. i think they're on their edge of their seats they're watching us as future journalists there's a little bit of skepticism there's a lot of good questions which you want from every student even explaining the very complicated electoral college which is even tougher me to try to explain to the students coarsely has its oracle roots but they do have hope and they do have
9:45 pm
optimism but they're watching the next 2 or 3 days as the adults are as well we are literally on the edge of our seats do not want to repeat of what happened this summer but those issues ring very deep in the hearts of those students like place matters global warming and some of those kinds of things you would not and we've talked many times about the differences in political systems between the u.s. and europe how do you explain to our global audience that there's this chaotic and polarized state of u.s. politics. the way it's that it's a conundrum is it not one of the ways i like to think about it is tribalism you know and that has some kind of connotations as you look around the world and that word can even be a loaded term in some parts of the world but we really are a nation of tried who have decided for whatever reason we're going to stay in our own you know parts of the the environment or we're not going to talk to each other for instance a lot of democrats now would be people who would shop
9:46 pm
a whole foods they have a college education that used to be the democratic party used to be where the blue collar workers so that's why so many of them went towards trump they can't find their voice they can't find their arena leader i think what is interesting and will be fascinating to watch of joe biden prevails and becomes the next president of the united states is how he might be able to bring those voices back together because one of the headlines that's come out of this is this was not close and this was very it wasn't what played for either party and i think that kind of is chilling even me to say half the people in my neighborhood half the people that i'm teaching might be silence from supporters and that's ok that. i decided let's let's figure out a safe space to talk about it and i think bill by might be able to do that we need a president who is in some ways a teacher it's interesting you say that today there was talk about donald trump running for president again in 2024 is america is it an able to free
9:47 pm
itself from trump isn't i think we are i think we will give us time probably one of the things we need to do does asked a girl to pray to whatever god you believe in that america needs your hope and your inspiration and your prayers this is a time for us to turn outwards you we can learn lessons from you from europe from india countries who have won the elections and have great democracies but it doesn't get over instantly overnight and part of that is perhaps america's is so busy we are busy on our phones and on our social media and wanting instant answers and instant results and instant analysis when we really just have to breathe the one thing that i've seeing on all my social media platforms that i resharing is everybody just take a deep breath we're going to get through this we're going to understand what it means and we're going to need to find a way to push forward for good conversations to happen so i think what's really
9:48 pm
important for me and what i'd like to emphasize is that you know there are so many voices none of them without significance we have to find a way for those voices to be heard yeah and as they say bill patience it is a virtue bill so caucus is a he did yes at the walter cronkite school of journalism at arizona state university bill as always it's good talking to you we freesheet your insights tonight thank you. thank you one quick note great yet it was walter cronkite so i'm thinking what would walter be thinking this election i think you would say everybody just just breathe and that's the way it is bill thank you. that's exactly right thank you. so days after the u.s. election and still no conclusive result states have until december 8th to deliver the certified results that's supposed to help guarantee that all votes have indeed been counted that day is called safe harbor day because any state result delivered
9:49 pm
after that can be challenged the last time this all came into play was 20 years ago and that election that was alternately decided by the u.s. supreme court. november 2000 republican presidential candidate george w. bush seems to win florida but the results are so close that the rules demand a recount the whole election hangs in the palettes democratic candidate al gore request a manual recount in certain counties. recounting by hand took a long time. a legal battle slowed vote counting down and the state overshot the safe harbor date december 8th this allowed the bush campaign to ask the supreme court to stop a new statewide recount which it did bush was declared the winner by a margin of just a few 100 votes. fast forward to this november
9:50 pm
another election without an immediate result the established law in some states is that counting early and mail in ballots can only start on election day and this year the corona pandemic meant millions of people voted that way counting all these ballots takes guess what a long time. we don't know how long yet but that december 8th safe harbor deadline is starting to become visible on the horizon. president trump has already said he intends to use lawsuits to slow down or stop state counts which could push them past the safe harbor date and make them vulnerable to challenges his 1st comments after polls close pointed towards this he falsely said counting votes after election day was illegal. we were getting ready to win this election frankly we did win this election by us is a major fraud nation we want the lord to be used in
9:51 pm
a proper manner so we'll be going to the u.s. supreme court his democratic opponent joe biden had been expecting this and tried to take the wind out of trump's sails. because of the on precedent early vote in a maryland vote that's going to take a while we're going to have to be patient until the hard work of tally of votes is finished. if un declared states miss the safe harbor date while there's still no overall result the u.s. congress and supreme court could get involved bringing back memories of the bitterly divided 2000 contest. well right now people living in germany could be forgiven for knowing more about the political situation in the united states than right here in germany for days now the and certainly following tuesday's elections is leading newscasts and front
9:52 pm
pages of cross the country surveys here have consistently shown trump is deeply unpopular among germans and on wednesday a leading politician described his post-election behavior as quote awful. list full of jonathan katz now with the german marshall fund of the us he joins me from washington d.c. good to see you again we've spoken with numerous. german lawmakers this week no one supports the reelection of donald trump that we've spoken with in fact the chairman of the foreign relations committee in parliament said this week that germany is not prepared for another 4 years of donald trump what would happen to german american times if trump were to spend another 4 years in the white house well you know we've already seen a. dig depredation us trans-atlantic relations and their president trump it so it's likely to be continue to be a rocky rocky relationship with that said united states germany and translated

allies all have some common challenges. potential adversaries and even in the trouble it's rich despite all the rhetoric there is an ability to work together to address many issues and so while i think it would certainly be challenging wouldn't be advantageous to strengthen the transatlantic relations it's unlikely that the united states and germany would part ways even if trouble is reelected and still of course that's hanging in the balance right now as votes are being counted. joe by news almost by default the germans want to see in the white house do you think that the germans know biden as well as they think they do or is he simply the candidate who is not dumb. you know but vice president biden is a well known commodity he was in the senate foreign relations committee for many years has always been a true translate assist he's well known in germany and i think i think there's
9:54 pm
a high hopes high expectations that he wants that he would mend some of these these challenges and address the differences that we existed between washington and berlin over the last several several years with that set people there is an enormous challenges in the united states economy that's been hard hit by cope it and so i think he 1st and foremost is going to have to be a domestic president to address those challenges but no doubt he's been quite clear as president biden will get if elected he is certainly going to go to his european allies 1st much like president obama did very early in his presidency to try to ensure that this pet rocks relationship is there to ensure our security in our economy and i think president biden is about transatlantic cism present trump otherwise is and is proving the ops. got about a minute left let me ask you biden and obama they were against the nord stream to

pipeline between russia and germany as trump is and by trump he wants to spend more on defense at nato this doesn't sound like much of a change does it yeah you know successive u.s. administrations have asked allies in nato to spend 2 percent and i think that's unlikely to change it was the same thing that president obama asked for i think the difference is that there are other challenges and issues including climate change how do we address the rise of china. things that this administration has failed to find common footing with european allies and expected by to distraction or to much better job. of the german marshall fund in washington d.c. jonathan as always we appreciate your insights thank you absolutely thank you again good to see you again. the day is almost done the conversation continues online you'll find us on twitter either at the news or you can follow me at brant t.v.

this is e w news live from berlin another day of waiting final votes still being counted in the race for the white house democrat joe biden is widening his lead over president drop the message from biden supporters count every vote see as their candidate leads the all important tally of electoral college votes but it's not over yet. up the stuff that count is what trump supporters and the truck campaign are saying the president is mounting a series of legal challenges but the vote counting continues.
10:01 pm
i bring it off it's good to have you with us 2 days after the u.s. presidential election and there is still no winner voters or votes are still being counted in several key u.s. state's democratic challenger joe biden is closest to the 270 electoral college votes needed to secure the presidency the associated press has called arizona for biden even though the vote count there is not yet finished a win in arizona would put joe biden at 264 electoral college votes other news agencies are reporting that the arizona contest is still open meanwhile the trump camp. has launched legal actions claiming voter fraud and is trying to stop the vote in 3 states.
10:02 pm
frustration spilling out onto the streets in new york and trump protesters demanding every vote be counted. in other cities like here in seattle a similar story. in portland a sign that many here have had enough of us politics altogether. but in phoenix arizona pro trump supporters make their voices heard outside an election center. this is a country divided. i believe personally as a republican that trump won in a landslide but because of culbut and the ballots that 300000 ballots overnight were found in every city in the swing states for a bite and i'm just overwhelmed i am so stressed out yesterday it was like you know
10:03 pm
in society but today this morning i broke down and cried because of the possibility that trent might be in office again. across several states votes are still being counted the majority of them have been sent in by post and in this election costing a vote by mail has been favored by many democrats every vote must be counted no is going to take our democracy away from us not now not ever. america has come too far and there is far too many battles americans under too much ever let that happen. but republicans 7 claim these parties to invite some amount to electoral for a warrant with donald trump accusing democrats of trying to steal the election. trump's top lawyer is promising legal action the push. pull you know the
10:04 pm
democrats do because do. you. call deplorable chumps. though. we're going to stick with this we're going to win this election with. just a matter of counting the votes. it may come down to the courts to decide who wins this election the kind of sense for battle for the white house in 20 years. well here's a closer look at the states that have not yet been called the latest figures show joe biden with 264 electoral college votes president trump pounds 214 let's go through the states now we'll start in arizona votes are still being counted there but the a.p. news agency which is our main source of election data has called this race or that state for by the other major news outlets have not called it yet 11 electoral
10:05 pm
college votes are up for grabs in arizona joe biden currently has a slim lead in nevada that state carries the 6 votes that he needs to win but this is also the state with the largest number of uncounted votes in the u.s. southeast in the state of georgia 16 electoral votes on the table there trump is in the lead but that lead has narrowed in the truck campaign has filed a lawsuit alleging that in eligible late absentee ballots may have been added to the count. pennsylvania it is the biggest pride still up for grabs with 20 electoral college votes donald trump currently holds a narrower lead there but the remaining melon ballots are expected to favor joe biden so with votes still being counted donald trump's path to victory in has narrowed states in red or blue they have been called by the associated press for trump or biden states in lighter blue or pink are leaning towards biden or trump
10:06 pm
respect or that's going to update from washington now with my colleague similes misconduct she is following the vote counting doors good evening to you sumi so let's go through these states starting with nevada we could we understand there could be an overall result there maybe tomorrow evening what's the situation what are you hearing. brant what we're hearing is that a vote is very close right now and it could really be a decisive factor in this election there are 6 electoral college votes up for grabs in the state which could be really important as that i said and decisive here now a county election official has been speaking to the media and he said that they will update results tomorrow or there early afternoon there was some disappointment brant because some people had hoped that we might find out more definitive results from nevada today but the reason for that is of processing lots of mail in the ballots and to add to that you can actually the state of nevada can actually
10:07 pm
receive these ballots all the way until next week and legally according to state rules they would have to be counted as well it could be a very small number of ballots we're talking about it might not be decisive but still so much as hanging in the balance now as they stands right now joe biden's leaders are at around $11000.00 voigt votes and election officials in the state say that all of those ballots that were cast in person on election day they've been tallied so what we're waiting for is those mail and ballots and they have been leaving as we heard in the report to the democrats so joe biden seems very hopeful that nevada could go their way but it's too soon to say friends if we do know from the west to the east. the state of georgia the margin of victory is going to be razor thin there we understand how surprising is that is. it's really surprising but i mean you know the last time georgia voted for a democrat was for bill clinton in 1902 that's a long time ago this is a republican stronghold and it's been so for many years and right now president
10:08 pm
trump is ahead by just around 14000 votes but that margin has been shrinking you know there are less than 60000 votes left to count there and a good number of those are coming from fulton county where atlanta is located have only favor for the democrats and you know atlanta really grant is an example of what's been driving change in george georgia i mean of these big urban areas with the surrounding suburbs that are home to immigrant populations you know those people have been moving in from other states perhaps up north and that's been turning patches of georgia's map blue in a state that was otherwise you know a sea of red and now it is a battleground state. this year it is and that's a new political reality for both parties and of course you have people in the question around the world still wondering when will we have a final result that still remains open beer tonight. in washington sinews always thank you. from washington d.c. now to the great city of philadelphia that's where the dubuque chiffon simons is

joining us he is in front of the convention center where the ballots for the entire state of pennsylvania are now being counted stefan i understand you are not alone there tell us what's going on. yeah well a little bit my focus here for me here less numbers here is the pennsylvania convention center this is where the counting happens full philadelphia for all those votes the time campaign expresses various says does not want to have counted anymore and the crowd here one staff counted let me take you with you a little bit here you see on this side there this is the troll count every vote crowd to dancing it off so to speak now speech change to the other side. will trump crowd smaller now that was a big get out there were 5060 people earlier today now it's just like a stalled ward so to speak now we had a chance to talk to a few people here let's listen in what they have to say i'm here because donald trump has been fighting for 4 years to keep the democrats from stealing the

election both 2015 they try to steal 2016 and they try to they're feeling 2020 as we speak right now i live in north philadelphia i voted for donald trump i do not understand why the ballots are still flooding in case after november 3rd if it if the ballot didn't show up november 3rd then it does not count. but. i think that. there's no evidence that there's any voting fraud. problem i mean i'm sorry that they feel pride by their legal right back you know tears and still voting to. post their ballots and there's nothing project about back. stefan it's fascinating hearing what these people say if they're standing side by side in front of the place where the ballots are being counted that we do. these people do they do they speak to each other is there any type of interaction going on. not so much i guess why he should
10:11 pm
get out but you see all those cops there those police here there's also a lot of police here and civil closing mixing with the crowd and they're making sure that actually the dancers here the pro count all the votes crowd and the trumpets are the trump followers supporters are not coming too close they are interactions here and there but most of it is basically yelling at each other from wherever perspectives you come from and it's difficult to do you know perhaps when we can expect a result of final result for pennsylvania because we know that it is the most important battleground state with the most electoral votes up for grabs. right so the secretary of state of pennsylvania has reportedly come out to say that she is hopeful that we actually get the votes count the final vote count from

philadelphia bucks county and so on this is a district the suburbs around philadelphia by tonight local time here now caution caution caution she said hold it probably will be tomorrow some point tomorrow that we get the final vote count here and that is and that is if the trump administration does not come up with some other legal maneuver to halt this or delay this what have you so maybe today maybe tomorrow best i can give you know well that's as good as we are getting 2 days to fund ximenes in philadelphia there right between the trial and the biden supporters to fund thank you. away from the u.s. election the united states has registered almost 800001000 cases in the last 24 hours that is a new record infections have been surging the. the midwest currently hardest hit hospitals are almost at full capacity north dakota has only 6 unoccupied intensive
