surprise you so we're going to go who is magical really what moves. a puppet who talks to people who follow along the way admirers and critics alike now as the world's most powerful woman shaking her if you join those chemicals laska. you're watching news asia coming up today the united states has taken the world on a wild ride this week with plenty of people in asia glued to their television screens what does the region's big power china think about the elections we'll take a closer look and we'll also look at how taiwan fits into the complicated nature of u.s. china relations. plus india prepares for a devolving next week officials have tried for years to bring down the pollution from all the firecrackers sparks during the festival how much success have they had .
2:31 pm
i'm melissa chan welcome to news asia thank you for joining us is the end of a long week with not just americans but everyone following the count in the united states democracy can be a messy process and a particular intricacies of u.s. politics have played out spectacularly in asia the country with the most at stake is china given the 2 countries rocky yet close relationship so how is china viewed and responded to the events of this week we had only in the studio to tell us more hung on any official reaction from beijing yes beijing has said that the election is the u.s. domestic affair and that it has no position on it and that's it that's it but is there any hint that beijing preferred one candidate over now. other well i mean in
2:32 pm
the beginning chinese leaders probably preferred mr biden because you know because of mr trump the u.s. sino relationship has plunged to the lowest point in decades but after seeing what miss what kind of chaos mr mr trump has caused in the us i think beijing is starting to see mr shrum as an accelerator of u.s. decline ok so beijing hasn't said anything about either candidate i'm curious about whether china has said anything in regards to the democratic process this past week anything on that well the u.s. media has reported on u.s. elections a little bit not much but when they do report on that and one day do come and it's mostly about how chaotic the u.s. election has been and you know that mr trump has claimed election fraud and that he's taking it to court there's a lot of mockery and shot and freud are really once one commentary from thai
2:33 pm
campolo for example it's a newspaper in hong kong controlled by beijing writes that u.s. style democracy is a joke with clear double standards another one from state funded global times writes why is the west becoming more and more discontented with its democracy so what's happening in the u.s. right now really is supporting china's favored argument that the u.s. is an utterly fundamentally unstable place and that democracy doesn't work ok so that state media i'm curious is there a way to get a sense of what ordinary chinese think in all of this i mean of course there's propaganda and they provide the guidelines in terms of what can be discussed in the country but any sense of what people think is. actually try to look up come ons on wave war and. wave or social media but it's also somewhat can be controlled it's somewhat controlled. but. own way boy it's actually one of the hottest topics with
2:34 pm
a 2000000 searches and most chinese citizens i would say that they see that as an entertainment so many of them have been walking the u.s. election and they also have been commenting as if they were watching like a football match and each candidate has their own supporters one post for example says that i wish trump can be elected for a 2nd term because whatever trump likes or dislikes killed say it in your face it's easier to deal with another post writes people should have seen how arrogant indecent and disrespectful of fact and science trump has been in get tough a country still supports him utterly disappointed by the americans and that view by the way is shared by a lots of biden supporters in china and there's another one post that writes trump and biden are equally bad for china the best scenario for china is that biden wins
2:35 pm
but trump challenges his victory the 2 of them then enter into a conflict and bring the us into some sort of civil war in that this comment says it all really because more chaos in the west mean more opportunities for china and surely thank you. now over the course of the election both trump and biden have tried to do each other on who would be tougher on china and in that context the issue of taiwan has come up china that's beijing considers taiwan which is independently governed and a democracy a breakaway province taiwan has stepped up military drills as beijing increases its pressure on the island by ramping up air force activity in the area chinese leader xi jinping has also suggested that he might take the territory by force telling taipei last month to quote prepare for war beijing also accuses taiwan of quote colluding with the u s. for more we have michael maas
2:36 pm
a visiting fellow at the american enterprise institute mike why does taiwan matter but taiwan may be a small island but it is way above its weight so it's a consistently the top trip and trading partner for the united states it occupies a key note in the global supply chain so if you like your i phone your laptop your smart watch you better hope nothing untoward happens to taiwan but more fundamentally a world that is safer the united states and its allies around the world is a safe is a world that is safe for democracy like west berlin during the cold war taiwan says that democracy is front line. you know if it's fending off threats to its very existence from an authoritarian became a minister taiwan were to ever fall to chinese their predations you know the world would suffer a grievous loss and china would be in a position to dominate asia in a way that that there would only benefit the chinese government already. and for
2:37 pm
close observers of taiwan u.s. and china relations the last 4 years under trump has been pretty eventful some people may remember that phone call president elect trump made to taiwanese president saying one breaking diplomatic president how disruptive for better or worse has this administration been when it comes to taiwan so i wouldn't say that the administration has been disruptive i'd say that the trip administration is the us i want a relationship one for the so you know the 2 countries national security advisors have met in the white house you know washington has engaged in and others in multilateral initiatives and diplomatic side and it's needed defense articles that i won washington has treated like a much like it would treat any of its other security partners so i think that the is another step so both ensure that both countries gain more from the relationship
2:38 pm
well also contributing to deterring china from acting more aggressively towards the war speaking of acting more aggressively what's your assessment of taiwan becoming a flashpoint a sparking a military conflict that may or may not involve the u.s. . yeah it's all in the wash so i think that the taiwan strait is the most dangerous flashpoint in asia perhaps globally and i think it's the place that's most likely to lead to a war between the united states and china but that doesn't mean that i think such a war is likely i think one can be avoided but i do believe that the chinese threat to taiwan is growing more urgent and there's good reason to think that the so-called reunification will become even more important to say something in the years to come taiwan's people unsurprisingly have little interest in union with what they consider to be many of the considered to be a foreign country ruled by dictators now it is sort of a situation in which an immovable force is meeting in unstoppable syrian unmovable
2:39 pm
object is meeting an unstoppable force and i think that that means uncoerced unification is off the table and that makes for a dangerous dynamic in the taiwan strait and all of that underscores the importance of ensuring that taiwan can effectively defend itself and that the united states and ideally its other allies can successfully come to taiwan's aid if need be you know i think it's crucial that that beijing look at a move on taiwan as a highly risky move and it's crucial that taiwan the united states take steps to ensure that that assessment doesn't change in beijing michael mazza thank you india celebrates to volley next week it's one of the most important festivals in the country and firecrackers are central to the celebrations but they add to the already high pollution especially in delhi the government banned environmentally unfriendly firecrackers 2 years ago but as many are charging reports both

businesses and environmentalists on happy with the move. markets are abuzz with activity as the valley approaches. people trying to shops to buy firecrackers and other goods linked to the festival of lights. but every year this festival adds to the concern around worsening air pollution caused by the lighting of firecrackers. for the past few years there has either been a partial or a complete ban on the sale of fire crackers in delhi to keep the pollution levels in check this year the state government had directed that only green or eco friendly fire crackers will be sold in the capital city. i don't know there has been joining a fireworks store in delhi for the past 32 years selling a variety of firecrackers. but 4 years ago his business suffered a huge loss after

move environmentalists like somebody should love or feel that this is all sound and fury a long time some. sion is sought moving from norman 5 god goes to green goggles as lord and off right now because they wore the green god as a boy and that everything was in less pollution by then still of the corn but more firecrackers higher than the norm of firecrackers this would not have an impact on the air quality. other like knowledge is that the move from regular to green practice is a positive one but she feels that the industrial is treated unfairly every year. with uncle the pollution is a year round problem the air quality is bad even when there are many firecrackers lit but everyone just wants to target a firecracker industry above and on the other was says that he and many like him may have to back up and close their businesses. that's it for now we leave you with some more pictures of to volley thanks for watching i'll see you next time to buy.

a psychologist and works with children and teens can you list us through the most common issues young people are struggling with right now. well there are actually a couple of problems that they are struggling with. one of the most important ones is of course anxiety they are worrying about everything right now their future the virus itself and so forth but they are also experiencing depressive symptoms they have problems with conflicts and families and of course sleeping problems eating problems all this kind of stuff so how's the pandemic amplifying those problems. and well the problem is that the pandemic itself and of course the year there was fictions that follow along they increase the stress on children and we know from research that stress is one of the main factors for and developing mental health problems and of course now we have this huge stress there are just the pandemic and
2:49 pm
the restrictions and it's kind of kind of normal that children youth and it's all experience and mental health problems. even though we do not know if they will have to eventually have a mental disorder or how they will cope in the long term however at the moment we see sort of and double of symptoms. in children and youth what the term is whether these problems they develop into disorders that. there are a couple of factors that. have to fire the stress and one of them's most important the background of the children so they are well herbal to stress do they have had had they had family problems before or did they have mental disorders before and do they have support and the schools and the social life and of course it also depends on the length of the damage and the restrictions and we
2:50 pm
expect them to show increased problems even after the pandemic sort of in the late onset. but we had quite certain that we have a moderate and we have not reached the full height of mental health problems in the nick is a very much dependent on what sort of parents you have and how they react. well that's that's certainly one factor that's been studied in australia when they showed that one of the most important things to the development of mental health problems was that over the conflict in families and of course if the parents are stressed and you have conflicts in the family and that increase the stress on the children so one point in fact is how the parents are coping but there are other factors as well but it's also how that how well the children are involved with their friends how much support do they receive from others how well help how much support do they get from a fine example from schools so parents know one thing but not the only one so i
2:51 pm
guess it's important that the school stay open. yes i'm very happy that right now in germany schools have have been staying open and i hope that this stays that way because what we saw and during the 1st lockdown in many countries there was that children restaurant a lot with. a lack of structure during the day with the lack of social contact with any of support from that teaches and so i think that this is really very important thing for mental health to the schools and all day care facilities open if it's possible for concerning the endemic restrictions sure. how else can we avoid melancholy or loneliness or isolation turning into something worse. well one thing is to be to be to be starting to be a bit more creative and we know that social support is one of the main thing just to decrease mental health problems and to decrease stress. of course
2:52 pm
a lot of people think we need social support from real life interactions but of course we can use digital and digital setups we can try to find positive reinforcement in our everyday life to experience things that helpful to ask have like the little things in life that you enjoy and of course try to share these with other people so that's one thing how we can try to manage the stress from. 2. to decrease and on the other hand it's also it also depends a lot of the on the perspective that you have when problems and of course you can sort of go into a downward spiral and think about all the things that are bad right now or you can try to focus on the nice things during the day just be thankful for one thing at the end of the day i'd rather focus on the nice things to you from berlin somebody

university thank you very much for joining us today thank you. very good advice your questions now on the coronavirus is the science correspondent eric williams. i'm curious about differences in covert 19 infection rates seen in primary versus secondary schools other studies on that. there's a real jungle of conflicting data on this topic and pretty much any other question that you can think of that's related to kids and this pandemic so so let's start with what seems at least mostly clear at this point 1st several studies including a few big ones have shown pretty convincingly that infected kids can also transmit the virus to others but the data also looks pretty strong that a kids are more likely to get it from adults than the other way around and b. that smaller children in particular so those under 12 or so are
2:54 pm
a lot less likely to transmit it to others than older children or adults the european center for disease prevention and control has emphasized that unlike with other respiratory diseases there is no evidence that kids are primary drivers of covert 19 breaks one of the big problems with trying to compare a primary to secondary school kids to find out how big the differences between them might be is that every study decides what the word child manes on its own one might look at anyone under 18 others might only look at kids in preschool if you want a comprehensive roundup of what we know so far about kids and covert 19 i highly recommend looking at what the w.h.o. has published on it it's info pages are connected to a very
