americans at some point and i was really. listening. to the. this is d w news live from berlin 72 hours later and still no final results in the u.s. presidential election tensions grow as the count drags on for supporters of both candidates protesting at counting centers inside joe biden and his every closer to victory will be going live to us or elaine's.
1:01 am
i'm way and welcome to the program joe biden is edging closer to the white house as final votes are being counted 3 days after the u.s. election the democratic challenger is narrowly ahead in key states which have yet to declare their final results let's have a look at some of those results and the big picture hasn't changed for a while now joe biden still being called to have 264 electoral college votes to donald trump's 214 that's according to associated press now remember you need 270 electoral college votes to win the presidency now where are those votes coming from pennsylvania the big prize 20 electoral votes joe biden's taking the lead there it's currently almost 17000 votes up on donald trump with 98 percent of the vote count. more ballots coming in there as well as in georgia with its nearly 16
1:02 am
electoral those an extremely tight race biden has pulled ahead of trump but the difference is just over $4000.00 votes and officials there say there is very likely to be a recount now and zoom out to the whole map donald trump's path to victory is looking increasingly narrow states in red have been called by a.p. for trump states in blue you see there for biden meanwhile lighter blue or pink leaning biden or trump respectively and just remember remind you any one state will give joe biden the women but president trump needs a combination of states to hold on let's get more now in washington d.c. use washington bureau chief in his poll is with us either in a so the trump campaign how is it responding to joe biden taking the lead in georgia and pennsylvania. well trunk just. that.
1:03 am
it would be wrong for biden to claim victory and falsely claiming triumphal thing claiming that his sleeves will return after the age of the proceedings go through this is the trump side and there is no question that biden come pain is extending of all taking the lead in pennsylvania understanding that there are only inches away from victory trump said he's ready to contest the election going as far as the supreme court if necessary how realistic are those options for him. well if i didn't take pennsylvania georgia arizona and nevada matter because they had leave would be insurmountable the problem is that trump come pay into the trump come pain has been unable to point at any real cases of fraud by asking to stop counting in one state and continue in other states makes this climbs claims
1:04 am
really inconsistent and hard i think for courts to take on so most legal experts i've been talking to said that it is highly unlikely that a court will change what's indeed we've already seen some of those court cases being thrown out of mediately judges are calling them baseless let's bring in here oliver sally our other w. correspondent there in wilmington delaware that's joe biden's home state or joe biden has been a lot of the last few days all over what's the latest from where you are. well it's a big waiting game william joe biden has come out here every day since the election to really tell us supporters that they have to be patient that the vote count will continue and he's very convinced and overly optimistic that he will eventually be the winner of this election and it looks like as the vote count continues that the momentum is on his side that with every vote counted he has better chances to be
1:05 am
the president of the united states there are more and more supporters coming here there are a few trump supporters also coming here they have been some wild debates between them back and forth. and we've spoken to some of them and $11.00 of the biden supporters told us that they believe that years of hatred and division could be over any time soon joe biden certainly is ready to deliver a victory speech we might expect him later today but of course 1st of all he needs the numbers that's what he's been saying over and over again and the final vote count sacré in biden's campaign we just heard how trump's people are responding to biden's lead how has biden's campaign been responding to trump's claims and threats . well they are really focusing now on counting the vote one of the arguments we've been hearing from the biden campaign simply is that this is how democracy looks like in the claims are baseless what they're saying one of the claims of
1:06 am
course is making that suddenly new volt show up or that the election continues after election day that of course the biden campaign called very much baseless so there is no feel really that they could be successful of course is actually the opposite one common position here in the biden campaign is that. even embarrass himself and of course it's not even clear that he might get as far as the supreme court that's one of his one of his threats that the president puts forward to sue the biden campaign. for the election the supreme court they can reject this lawsuit because it's political and we've seen in the past also talking about the supreme court in many cases that they don't necessarily act on the. right they do have the right sister not hear a case if they don't want to over to you back in washington the electoral math is strongly in biden's favor what's preventing him from being called the winner and
1:07 am
the next president. well just as all the were pointed out biden and his come pain has taken a very conservative approach with the president president on trumpet of claiming fraud before the election is called and for biden to declare victory at the same time would only cause chaos and biden is very very aware of that as so he is very careful and he most definitely will wait until he can be really sure that he brought this game home and that he really has the necessary votes before he calls it and i'm pretty sure whatever he says tonight one of his major approaches will be to calm down this so deeply divided country who thought so much aggression i mean just a lever sali solid reported how how people are talking with each other from these different kind of political stand so this will be his major approach and maybe he
1:08 am
can declare victory maybe this is the only thing we will hear from him tonight you know all in washington all over solid in delaware thanks for a much for going through those numbers and more importantly the perceptions. germany's health minister says the country's health care system could soon be overwhelmed if it's coded caseload isn't brought under control was speaking as germany topped the 20000 mark for new daily infections for the 1st time the virus is hitting many european states even harder now than when it 1st arrived earlier this year. a new somber record for germany the highest number of daily covert 1000 cases ever registered in the country germany is in its 1st week of a new partial lockdown restaurants bars and leisure activities are shut down travel

for tourism is strongly discouraged while shops and schools are allowed to stay open germany's health minister yen spahn said the country's health care system is not currently overwhelmed but hard times are ahead if the rise in cases isn't stopped. the situation is serious the number of people requiring support in intensive care units has doubled in the past 10 days from as of today our health system is still coping but even the best system in the world cannot cope with a doubling every 10 days. after the growth rate is very strong and we must break it together in the dark. even germany's extensive testing capacity is under pressure let's say they are struggling to keep up with the manned but there is confidence that the current shutdown will help bring the number of cases back down. the numbers that we see today or effect of the

situation a week ago because we have been conditioned period the numbers are slightly slightly improved we have to be optimistic because the reproduction number is below one and i think that's the 1st signs that things might get better here in our country in berlin people are taking reports of the record case rise in their stride many say they are learning to live with the virus and the restrictions on how we see that even with restrictions in place the numbers still go up we just try to live with it now to cope with the situation i don't think about it any more than usual. it's pretty shocking i mean i think all governments in every country are doing the best they can i don't think there's any right or wrong so i would go to people have faith in the vaccines and i certainly believe that will help next week chancellor angela merkel and the federal state leaders are expected to meet to take stock of the situation and decide whether to introduce tougher

restrictions something most here in germany are hoping to avoid. let's take a look now at some other stories making news around the world in guatemala at least 150 people are dead or missing after hurricane swept over the country the army still rest when people stranded by floodwaters and landslides storm caused i think right across central america it's now been downgraded forecasters expect as a to really regain strength as it crosses the caribbean this week. european union sanctions against belarusians leader alexander lukashenko have come into effect in response to his crackdown on pro-democracy protests mass anti-government rallies have continued every weekend since august disputed election and i've seen thousands of arrests sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans on the 14 other efficiencies. police in austria have closed

a full classroom its own out of reach during this time of isolation with no end in sight yet for young people. from university as a psychologist and works with children and teens can you list us through the most common issues young people are struggling with right now. well there are actually a couple of problems that they struggle with. one of the most important ones is of course anxiety they are worrying about everything right now their future the virus itself and so forth but they are also experiencing depressive symptoms they have problems with conflict and families and of course sleeping problems eating problems all this kind of stuff so how's the pandemic amplifying those problems. and well the problem is that the pandemic itself and of course the year there was friction is that follow along they increase the stress on children and we know from research
1:21 am
that stress is one of the main factors for and developing mental health problems and of course now we have this huge stressor it just depend on the restrictions and it's kind of kind of normal that children youth and it's all experience and mental health problems. even though we do not know if they will have to eventually have a mental disorder or how they will cope in the long term however at the moment we see sort of and double of symptoms. in children and youth what the term is whether these problems there develop into disorders that. there are a couple of factors. that. to 5 stressed one of them's most important the background of the children so they will never bill to stress do they have had had they had family problems before or did they have mental disorders before and do they have support and the schools in their social life and
1:22 am
of course it also depends on the length of the damage and the restrictions and we expect them to show increased problems even after the pandemic sort of it delayed onset. but we have quite certain that we have moderate and we have not reached the full height of the mental health problems in the neck is it very much dependent on what sort of parents you have and how they react. well that's that's certainly one factor then that's been studied in australia when they showed that one of the most important things to the development of mental health problems was that over the conflicts in families and of course if the parents are stressed and you have conflicts and in the family and that increase the stress on the children so one point in fact is how the parents are coping but there are other factors as well but it's also how that how well the children are involved with their friends how much support do they receive from others how well help how much support do they get from
1:23 am
a 5 south from schools so parents know one thing but not the only one so i guess it's important that the school stay open. yes i'm very happy that right now in germany schools have have been staying open and i hope that this stays that way because what we saw and during the 1st lockdown in many countries it was that children restaurant a lot with. a lack of structure during the day with the lack of social contact with of support from that teaches and so i think that this is really important thing for mental health too in the schools and all day care facilities open if it's possible concerning the endemic restrictions sure. how else can we avoid melancholy or loneliness or isolation turning into something worse. well one thing is to be to
1:24 am
be to be starting to be a bit more creative and we know that social support is one of the main factors to decrease mental health problems and to decrease stress so of course a lot of people think we need social support from real life interactions but of course we can use digital and digital setups we can try to find positive reinforcement in our everyday life to experience things that are helpful to ask have like the little things in life that you enjoy and of course try to share these with other people so that's one thing how we can try to manage the stress from. 2. to decrease and on the other hand it's also it also depends a lot on the perspective that you have when problems and of course you can sort of go into a downward spiral and think about all the things that are bad right now or you can

try to focus on the nice things during the day just be thankful for one thing at the end of the day i'd rather focus on the nice things to you from berlin somebody university thank you very much for joining us today. thank you. very good advice your questions now on the coronavirus is the science correspondent eric williams. i'm curious about differences in covert 19 infection rates seen in primary versus secondary schools other studies on that. there's a real jungle of conflicting data on this topic and pretty much any other question that you can think of that's related to kids and this pandemic so so let's start with what seems at least mostly clear at this point 1st several studies including a few big ones have shown pretty convincingly that infected kids can also transmit the virus to others but the data also looks pretty strong that
1:26 am
a kids are more likely to get it from adults than the other way around and b. that smaller children in particular so those under 12 or so are a lot less likely to transmit it to others than older children or adults the european center for disease prevention and control has emphasized that unlike with other respiratory diseases there is no evidence that kids are primary drivers of covert 19 outbreaks one of the big problems with trying to compare a primary to secondary school kids to find out how big the differences between them might be is that every study decides what the word child means on its own one might look at anyone under 18 others might only look at kids in preschool if you want a comprehensive round up of what we know so far about kids and covert 19 i highly

recommend looking at what the w.h.o. has published on it it's info pages are connected to a very very wide range of subjects around the topic everything from what i've talked about here to how closing schools affects children's welfare and you'll also find more studies there on children and covert 19 than you can shake a stick out. to bring you up to date with the latest on the. code infections from more than 200 countries and territories. the numbers show new cases doubling in 39 nations and increasing in another 81 countries have stayed at the same level in 16 countries 61 nations have seen their new positive cop in 1000 cases decline another rate down by least tough and 6 countries have reported no new cases for 4 weeks in
