about to hear from joe biden are we going to hear from donald trump at all well it doesn't appear to be the case so what we've heard today is that the white house has put a lid on president trying for the day that means he will not speak to the media will not speak to the public we will not hear from the president himself that being said we have heard from him over twitter today so earlier in his 1st tweet says since the news came through the joe biden was there the president elect we saw president trump take to twitter again to repeat those unsubstantiated claims about illegal voting and voter fraud taking place in this election we also saw the trump team before president trump remember he was out at a golf course in virginia earlier in the day well before he left that golf course he had a seam huddle there at that golf course in virginia put together a statement of bowing to continue to fight to this election result to continue to launch more legal challenges saying that monday would see another slew of legal challenges and that would add to what's already on the docket in georgia in
2:16 am
pennsylvania in michigan in arizona what isn't clear however is what the strategy is going to be here because as we've said time and again these legal challenges have been dismissed or rejected by various courts now because they have not been able to provide proof of any sort of malfeasance any sort of fraud and it is important to say that right now president trump is trailing joe biden by a number of votes that even if you were to win or be successful with a legal challenge in one state it would not be enough to change the outcome of this election so really we're wondering what the strategy is going to be from the trump team. all right sumi thank you so much we're just seeing live pictures from wilmington delaware there again. let's just clarify this for our viewers is there any evidence at all to back. trump's claims of election fraud. no there's not that we have heard that you know
2:17 am
certainly there have been a record number of ballots that have been cast by mail this year that we know and we know that ballots that are cast by mail are more vulnerable to error that is for sure there are far more difficult let's say than voting in person because there's so many different steps that a voter him or herself have to keep in mind at home as they're casting their ballot and then going to put it in the mail but that certainly does not mean that we've seen widespread voter fraud and that is simply not substantiated every legal expert here has been very clear on that so these claims of voter fraud are really. looking for any instance that they can to be able to turn this election around and we have to say categorically that poll that there just isn't proof of that house but. how is the republican party been reacting to those claims. well it's interesting you ask that because there have been a few congratulations let's say trickling in for the president elect joe biden and
2:18 am
the vice president elect come away harris but the rest of the republican party has been silent in the silence has been resoundingly and this is very interesting to watch because these are supporters of president trump who are weighing up very carefully how they decide to respond to the news that joe biden is now the president elect because they're well aware of the fact that president trump himself has not accepted this result that he's going to continue to challenge it and it is a question of whether they will seek to break with the president as they have been afraid to do over the last 4 years because of his massive support among the republican party and because the president himself has lashed back at anyway. when the party who hasn't shown him complete loyalty so it's going to be very interesting to see what the senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says what other prominent members of the republican party are going to say who have not yet commented again until now it really just has been a handful of republicans who have spoken out on twitter and we're waiting to see what the rest will say. a lot of soul searching in the republican party for sure in
2:19 am
the coming weeks and months so much so much going on washington thank you so much. still seeing live pictures from wilmington delaware there waiting for a job by the president of the united states to take the stage. let's try it and talk to our correspondent who is right there on the 1st ballot again all over hear me. i can hear you loud and clear all right a lot of expectation and i can imagine what the situation where you are what are you seeing have you seen joe biden already. you arrived to your with those motor of local sirens of course the blue flashing lights just a little while ago you can see behind me the crowd is also growing we're just
2:20 am
waiting for him to appear on stage to take the stage and deliver who accept and speak of those president elect budgets but. now this is of course the happening during a pandemic coronavirus is on everybody's minds we're seeing a lot of people can you tell us a little about the precautions. i think we just assume a little the earth is a different event. go ahead we can hear you here all right. it's a very different event of course you can see a 100 people here every one is that a bit of the old old so everyone would have. to or a lot of. crawl would be by far bigger used to be a big convention center right behind me and the people are essentially behind
2:21 am
a fence. in officially only just very few cars. but. it's all those people that don't help but they get a sense really they're just. prepared pulled out of it up to out of. the but if you're the most pray you're bringing up all they want to know and we can't really see them. trying to get back in touch with you later but for now. william let's talk about the polls here because some of them were predicting a landslide win for the biden harris take it now won't we were 4 days after election day we just barely know that they won the election and what went wrong what demographic didn't pollsters capture we're going to have days weeks months and lots of think pieces to dive into just what this election
2:22 am
means who voted for whom who did in who over perform to underperform a lot we just don't know yet remember there are still ballots to be counted we don't know what the ultimate final result is even though we know that joe biden will be president one interesting thing is if georgia goes biden's direction and arizona and nevada we could be looking at the exact same electoral spread as donald . one over hillary clinton 2016 so for democrats it might be a little bit of hot to donald trump to win exactly what donald trump won over clinton in 2016 but we have to wait for those results to come in you know we don't the polls were rather optimistic they were on the high side i don't think anyone realistic really thought that this was going to be a landslide i do think there was some thought that this would be a more comfortable win for joe biden but let's point out just what joe biden accomplished he got back wisconsin michigan pennsylvania he flipped arizona he
2:23 am
may flip georgia 2 extremely republican long time republican strongholds these are states that for a democratic candidate hasn't won i think since $96.99 so even just come out a little bit more than 50 percent is a huge increase in democratic support in these states so we shouldn't underestimate that and ultimately as we've been saying it's 2 choices democrat republican we've known from polls for the entire term camp the entire trump term that most republicans were going to say what was going on in the world the time most republicans stuck by donald trump and 80 percent or 90 percent approval rating of republicans so the idea that maybe you know a large amount of republicans were suddenly going to break with the president to vote for joe biden i think was a bit of a fantasy for democrats that said democrats really underperformed with latinos especially in florida especially cubans because we've known for a long long time decades even that these especially the cuban demographic within latino's is rather conservative and democrats have taken advantage of
2:24 am
a bit or taken for granted that latinos will just vote for democrats that is of course not necessarily true it's a very diverse group of people within the united states and it's not just enough to break down black brown latino asian there's also age demographics there's gender demographics there's there's income so socio economic demographics that all. will sway how a person thinks i mean just look at the black community for example which is a very reliable democratic. bloc 80 or 90 percent support for democrats normally but among the younger black americans were not too hot on joe biden they were more in the bernie sanders and it was older black americans who were more for the centrist joe biden so you really have to look at it not just in terms of these groups but when we're doing kind of a post-mortem of this election pollsters strategists and the politicians themselves
2:25 am
are we're going to take a hard like hard look where they over performed under florida where they need to do more work in you know in the midterm elections 2022 when i say that presidential elections in 2024 if you're just joining us we're looking at live pictures from wilmington delaware the hometown of joe biden president elect of the united states he is expected to take the stage shortly and address the nation for the very 1st time as president elect of the united states waits on me in the studio john king. is part of our u.s. election team. this is not only for joe biden it's also weigh in for a harris a very historic one as the 1st woman 1st asian american 1st black woman to be elected to the vice presidency what is her role in the new government going to be well joe biden said it 1st and foremost much as joe biden was you know
2:26 am
the 1st visor the most important advisor to barack obama as vice president joe biden wants a couple of hours to be an advisor yes she was picked for the optics but she was also picked because she's an extremely skilled and experienced politician a lawyer attorney general that she knows how to debate she knows how to counsel future president joe biden on the various issues and. they largely see eye to eye so that is definitely the role it seems. to play a very active role in this administration vice presidents always have a very it depends on really the administration some vice presidents just sit back and they're just warming up the seat waiting in case something happens to spring in jump into the seat to be the president if something happens the president others are more active a more aggressive we saw that with dick cheney dick cheney was a very aggressive vice president played a very strong role really expanded the powers of the vice president in the bush administration joe biden was kind of the voice of experience with barack obama was
2:27 am
so young and inexperienced when it came to the levers of power in washington so i think we're going to see a lot of that as well with a bite administration. is going to play a very active role in policy and of course symbolically the united states is a very diverse country and getting more and more diverse so it is disheartening when we still see so much of the. control by. a person of. position to make her presidency. i think for america very heartening indeed we're seeing the stage there in front of the. united states to come right here this is the type of stage let's listen.
2:28 am

congressman john lewis congressman john lewis before his passing wrote democracy is not a state it is an act and what he meant was that america's democracy is not guaranteed it is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it. of the to guard it and never take it for granted and protecting our democracy takes struggle it takes sacrifice but there is joy in it and there is progress because we the people have the power to build a better future of the of the. and
