hi welcome to arts 21 we are in cannes where a mini version of the city's famous film festival is giving hope to a struggling movie industry because the corona pandemic has hit the film business hard now if this were spring and it were a normal year the streets in cannes will be packed with filmmakers journalists and film fans but this is the fall and the process is nearly empty as empty as most theaters these days as empty as most film sets where even the movies that are being made have to be done under very strict and costly new $1000.00 safety protocols in fact the only place that film fans seem to be congregating these days is on streaming platforms at least at cannes many festival there are some new movies to be seen that's not the case in most cinemas these days the hollywood studios have held back their big blog. busters no one can say even if say the new batman or the

a promising newcomer george undirected day out really have been planning to show her film beginning at the festival back in may it went on to win at the san sebastián film festival in september and has now finally made it to cannes with her drama about a group of jehovah's witnesses in a small children town kowloon biggest really illustrates why streaming films at home on your couch just isn't the same as going to the cinema in a movie theater you can immerse yourself in the experience how much the way we see what's really happening in front of us or who are the people in front of us that without constantly intellectualizing our bringing our plaintive view to explain that to 1st experience and to see and maybe sink about it later got through for a while beginning received accolades in tan it was unclear whether many other major films would make it into movie theaters

a soul for being here. including the new batman in which robert pattinson plays the dark knight in his younger years the original release was scheduled for june 2021 but it now seems more likely to come out in march 21st to. watch the trailer to the end and you get the impression the production company is not feeling optimistic. that man is not the only one who's worried an entire. industry has been hung out to dry with many theaters now on the brink. the film tenet had recently provided a small boost but now theater owners are being left out in the cold. as it's not true as of course this is a disaster for us and in 2 ways one thing is having to close and stop taking in revenue while continuing to incur costs movie theaters financial buffers are now in
8:35 am
the red and the other thing which is very film specific is that people are forgetting about movie theaters the films may all be moving over to streaming services which would be devastating for us even for heem. it's probably the longest full play in double o. 7 scurrying these latest counting was scheduled for release in a couple of this year and was then pushed back to november when is gone finally coming where you all have oscars if you show the bond movie and heaters across the globe it's an incredible attention getter you can really make good money you mustn't forget that and all the other platforms benefit in the end which is why we feel we all now must weather this storm together and there's one thing the bond movie can't afford to do it can simply disappear into a stream but for him personally because in my opinion he is not for sale not for sale but negotiations with streaming providers are reported to be on the way
8:36 am
already will we be seeing poland in our living rooms this christmas. in germany theatres are already lamenting a 60 percent drop in sales and without bond another blockbusters how will they ever recover. patty jenkins deniable the streaming room is with her wonder woman seeking definitely sent to be released in theaters but if the coated crisis exacerbates beyond everyone's fears the american director will be helpless to prevent the. thanks. and what's in store for can suffer from safe distances and months even on the crossette there's no downtime directed to read for the most mind the festival will take place in 2021 at some point. if it may because we want in a way. that. we see this.

we. used. the word can to really go under at least they'll be something to see in the absence of movies off the coast of british on thursdays currently building several underwater sculpture parts. when the pandemic hit film production worldwide shut down that's still mostly the case in the united states but things look a bit better over here in europe several productions that we're planning to shoot in america have come over here to find a safe place to make their movies i've visited the new biljana studios in bulgaria where 2 u.s. productions are currently shooting to find out how producers are dealing with 19 and the new normal. or things have changed a lot of new boy ana masks and social distancing are mandatory now with people carrying film studio outside sofia as are covert tests for anyone who comes on set
8:38 am
. but unlike most hollywood studios movies are still getting made. like the u.s. thriller till death produced entirely under the restrictions. director renny harlin is here preparing his next action movie he says the coronavirus changed everything. it affects. how you work with the crew how you meet with the crew how you do your location scouting how you conduct your meetings and communication you do a lot of communication. and so on and it effects gusting a lot because there are others who don't want to travel. the new safety protocols have made movie making even more expensive a 2nd crew has to be kept on standby in case somebody gets sick and even catering is complicated by fazer out every meal for every crew member has to be prepared and

wrapped separately. so. head yar of lana estimates that costs mean at least an extra 5 to 10 percent added to the budget the direct cost obviously which is $10.00 senators or masks personal protective equipment all the things that are there and then there's an indirect car cost of hiring a covert task force bringing in consultants and viral videos from overseas to advise the production and how to do it and also this sort of new way of operating which slows things down because now we're in pods we can't just get a camera to set right away we have to put it into a holding cell someone else has to pick it up so you can use a lot more planning and timing as well and the added expense hasn't stopped film producers us horror film cobwebbed and the erotic drama after we found our currently shooting at new bills originally planned to film in america.
8:40 am
while the final piece in the erotic drama series are now being made in bulgaria it's required a change in approach to filming. we've designed sets around areas where we put windows up so you can see the action behind them but keep our cast behind the window like an addiction to each after movies are known for getting hot and heavy and there's no way to delay socially distanced. takes. technology has also helped particularly in post-production. so there's no light camera things right now. we're in the filmmakers or even experimenting with directing from the safety of their own homes but for now restrictions mean movie makers are curbing their ambitions. the scale of production has shrunk to because people are mindful you can't have the big battle scenes with 400 extras on horseback you know coming
8:41 am
down the planes so you have to do a different type of production pick your angles a little bit cleverer so you can still sell a scene with a lot of people but not have a lot of people around you. filmmakers hope that the lessons learned now using new remote technology and some old fashioned movie magic will make bigger and more ambitious films possible in the future. even under that. i would never say you can't do anything under co but i think with the right prep and the right protocols and the right attention to detail and you know and and being able to adapt to situations you should be able to do anything i know i've heard people say well they're not going to be able to make movies that are there anything but you people talking in a room i don't believe it i don't i don't agree with it even which is that you know the scripts are made because they're worth making and whatever's involved in the task you have to do right by the. stories. might not be going away any time soon

of course i could minimize the risk by simply not having any kissing scenes at all . but it makes more sense to really consider whether a scene is relevant or necessary to be convinced. to decide whether kissing and other physical contact are really necessary. it used to be everywhere on the screens. now with the coronavirus writers are having to summon all the skills of imagination. to us a typical show saturday night live came up with one solution. i was. very curious just like i remember are. the situation is in fact genuinely alarming it's valuable to devide of it now that we're all talking about a 2nd wave of people are beginning to wonder whether it will work out like they were hoping to get it but will it will be shot at all it's big it's their example

comfort. comfort that's in short supply because of physical distancing rules. the invertebrates with enough. we're desperate for human contact at the moment in contact and dimension for people a still partying because it's a fundamental need. and i think all of this is seeping into creative minds and we'll see a reaction on that because this is going to change the world for sure. until it's clear how the situation pans out screenwriters are playing it safe. doesn't excuse him. this is how most people are watching movies these days on a computer streaming services have been the big winners of the coded crisis most people are more comfortable streaming a film at home on netflix and then going out to a movie theater but what does it really mean when these small screen players become

midstream is the leading media over time corona significantly increase the frequency and intensity of streaming but he's no fan of streaming services and believes they use their great power for manipulation to their advantage and for spying on users. streaming that's because no medium comes closer to us than streaming you know there are humans capable of capturing every single step we take and analyzing it and exactly what does that do to our culture to our media landscape to how we deal with films. what does this data piracy do to our democracy and want contents being transmitted. this is definitely one of the most lethal and for one of the viruses we have seen so far when covert 19 struck netflix reacted promptly with a series of documentaries on pandemics that spread fear rather than knowledge by family but then one month the virus can travel around the country months up and down widespread throughout the world the next pandemic is going to scare you just

don't know where or how but when i look. at that i mean from a series on pandemics i expect a lot of knowledge to post different viruses different pandemics. but if you look at these documentaries they're just dramas there's. has no insight on offer just good versus bad in terms of content or nothing about it it's. another series success story is deutschland a $29.00 set around the fall of the berlin wall it's distributed by amazon prime coded 19 has changed people's viewing habits dramatically some projects that streaming services could be raking in more than $100000000000.00 worldwide by 2025 yes at present it's hard for them to bridge to sneak content. we were experiencing an incredible t.v. series boom in germany before the corona outbreak that's in the stores in my

estimation things will ease up next spring then that will continue. and will experience a golden age of storytelling in films and series. is that it was. a few years ago they were a nation market but increasingly streaming service is a dominating the media landscape and turning german history into a global it. has a creative capital. until recently netflix and co flew under the radar no one paid much attention to their lack of transparency in what they did with users data but that's changing. the streaming streaming services have been forgotten in criticism of the digital transformation you know it's through entertainment that's harmless and provides a diversion that rebel and even closer to the digital economy and the exploitation

that comes with it no one thought of that before. those times are gone streaming services are confronting us with new challenges the threat to the cinema as a cultural asset is just one problem of this king or a film. has a pretty tough time ahead of it when the pandemics behind us cinema will blossom again though i don't think it will be like it was. the corona crisis has increased the speed of change in the media landscape exponentially yet what that means is only slowly becoming evident. that's all for our $21.00 special on cinema in the corona crisis the next big film event is the belly nala the berlin international film festival it's scheduled for february 21 but will it happen or will corona shut it down well watch this space until then take care stay safe and
