bring on. beethoven 202250000 or verse 3 here on d w. this is the w. news live from breaks it is back on the news agenda the threat of a no deal divorce mounts with talks on the brakes a deadline just days away british and european negotiate just meet again today with an outcome still highly uncertain. also coming up in venezuela a socialist president maduro set to tighten his spread. after
11:01 am
a controversial election victory what does that mean for people struggling on a crippled because. also lufthansa says that by the end of this year it will slash $29000.00 jobs that's a 5th of its total workforce and that's not all there will be more job cuts next year. and some exciting weekend soccer action in germany has been asleep by a lever who's scoring goals. and stopping on their way to 2nd place in the district i will tell you how they extended a remarkable unbeaten streak. welcome to the program british and european negotiators will today resume talks to secure a post bragg. trade deal with an agreement hanging in the balance the latest round
11:02 am
of talks is taking place in brussels ahead of an e.u. summit later this week the e.u. is offering tariff free access to the single market in exchange for britain agreeing to e.u. rules on state environmental and labor regulations britain will leave the single market trading block at the end of the minds. joined by the. nominee and brussels haven't made any progress well it appears that no progress has really been made so far chief negotiator by mere briefed the best there is in brussels today and he seemed to be a rubber. about the prospects of sealing new trade deal with the u.k. at least according to diplomats they stress to that gaps between you and the u.k. have not been bridged on the most important issues and they also said that you know
11:03 am
the e.u. is ready to go an extra mile to make an agreement possible but that time is running out so we have to say that brussels is in their rubber a gloomy mood at the moment but. european commission president will again talk on the phone tonight one of the key sticking points. there are 3 issues dead the talks have been circulating around for 4 weeks now so how to make sure that we are going to have a for a competition or it's going to stick to the same rules this is one issue the 2nd issue is how to find a mechanism to make sure that future disputes can be solved between d. and the united kingdom and the 3rd issue is still fishing for they fishing represents about one percent of the u.k. g.d.p.
11:04 am
so this is a rather a symbolic issue but it seems to be very emotional for the u.k. and also for the european union how much the european officials will get in the future to u.k. watchers and this. this restocking points here if there's no deal before the end of the deadline what happens well i think it's fair to assume that we are going to see a lot of chaos because both sides don't seem to be prepared for such a worst case scenario then of course if there is no trade deal we are going to see tariffs on imports from the exports to the we are going to see customs checks and that could mean delays in even delivery of medicines for example we can see the laying of of florrie's way too to cross the border and
11:05 am
very a lot of issues would be affected if there is no trade deal from i.v. asian traveling in general to even you know transporting your pets from the from the u.k. to the european union. venezuela's socialist president nicolas maduro has held a gigantic election win that handsome control of the national assembly and cement his position in power but through a socialist almost 70 percent of the vote turnout was just 31 percent of the opposition parties called for a boycott international observers have condemned the vote saying the results did not reflect the will of the venezuelan people suffer claims acting president. said the vote was a fraud. of the people are the ones who commit fraud do ruin
11:06 am
his regime have lost the popular vote the majority of us want change in venezuela don't be surprised if they try to advance the result in the coming days of december because this election has done them no good. when. i'm now joined by a failure informed did obvious live in america desk ophelia the international observers like the e.u. and the organization of american states agree with that b. election was a good shot what's at stake for the country well this election won't be recognized either by that you the u.s. and other main international actors this means that the diplomatic isolation of mother a will continue and maybe even worse than this also means that the blockade india and the international markets will remain as well as the sanctions that have been imposed to the country to venezuelans in their everyday lives not much will change the economic crisis will stay and they won't see any improvement in terms of for example human rights watch the opposition of venezuela seems very divided and
11:07 am
fragmented wise that well they are for granted because their project failed basically. doesn't manage to establish this turn of regina that he was hoping for he lost a lot of strength when he attempted this military uprising last year that we can take him and the. position started to look for different strategies he and his parliamentarians will have to evacuate the national assembly on january 5th when the new one takes over and he might even be persecuted and forced to flee the country as many other of the opposition leaders have been forced to but this election is set against a growing humanitarian crisis where the tea is rampant how big is the support for majority socialists really well we saw a very old turnout in this in this election that's because many people didn't think that their voice would make a change there are still some supporters of the socialist project of the chevy
11:08 am
small people that believe that the economic crisis is only to do with the sanctions that have been imposed to the country but the reality is that people are so worried about how to survive how to get food and how to manage their lives the political the politics aren't aren't that important nowadays they're more worried about how to feed their families and what does it mean for the socialists to win control of the national assembly well that they are taking over the very last institution that had been democratically elected and that had a real opposition because they have an opposition now but it's a fake opposition and that will only strengthen the grip of power of maduro of this oath or a tear in regime it is an important symbolic win but it doesn't change in real terms because they had already legislative powers with this constitutional assembly they established into 2017 so really in terms of legal
11:09 am
better or some new your powers it's not it's not a real change so he has cemented his paw. so what for for that is where the weather where does this go well the main problem is how to tackle the economic crisis the majority one has thought about how to. to consolidate more support from his allies like iran russia and china but they don't really have the intention to to invest that much him in as well as they are only they're also looking for their relationship with other partners around the world and he doesn't have a strategy on how to rebuild the oil industry that is why they have been relying on for so long for the concert from all of america's best thank you for time now to have a look at some of the other stories making headlines around the world today iran's revolutionary guard says a remote controlled weapon was used in last week's assassination of

germany. kovac 19 restrictions are up to the individual states but so far they've agreed to take a unified approach. the 16 federal states have agreed in recent weeks to a number of stricter measures as part of the country's current lock down. your chancellor angela merkel has often said she thinks the steps don't go far enough so while the new measures might be welcome to the chancellor in berlin there were mixed reactions on the streets of bavaria. numbers aren't going down i think it's necessary to this making it this tough i think it's a bit excessive but i think of my workplace for example where i sit with sometimes up to 30 colleagues and then i can only spend new year's eve with 5 people. with new infection rates remaining consistently high in germany the question is are all of germany special states will now follow bavarians lead. on this story let's bring
11:14 am
in political correspondent julie daly of the german states follow bavarians lead. well they are premier of bavaria markets so there has always been one of the leaders in germany who was often pushed for tougher restrictions and has gone ahead now and implemented of those restrictions that are significantly harsher than those we see nationwide and this is causing some debate in the country also because countrywide we don't really see coronavirus cases dropping significantly with the current partial lockdown we see cases numbers case numbers flattening but not really going down and the death toll remains quite high and we now see some other state leaders and politicians calling for stricter measures especially in the hot spot areas where the incidence of coronavirus is higher so we do see some warming up towards positions happening in the political landscape here in germany was
11:15 am
something that the very. state doing as well as others. well bavaria has been hit hard by the virus already during the 1st wave it's where the 1st coronavirus case in germany actually occurred and it continued to be heavily hit also for example after the summer break so between august and september and we currently see as one of the states in germany with the highest incidence of coronavirus cases per 100000 inhabitants the situation is quite serious and even. acknowledge that he said that the current numbers in bavaria are not acceptable and that's why even though nobody really wants to implement a harsher lock down it is currently necessary but we have to keep in mind though is yes but very is not doing that well but germany wide we don't see numbers improving significantly and that is of concern throughout the country germany wanted also people are looking forward to easing off was directions for christmas and the new

year is that still going to happen well the issue now is not only whether the current partial lockdown is working but also whether the expected loosening of restrictions for christmas is too much of a risk that was the loosening this was something was decided on only 10 days ago by german chancellor i'm going to makan and the state premiers and it was meant to stay that way over the holidays and a new meeting was planned to re-evaluate the situation on january 4th now on sunday service said he thinks it is necessary to meet before christmas to decide what to do over the holiday period and other members of germany's political sphere including other state leaders are saying that it definitely is necessary to meet before christmas so we might be seeing a new meeting happening before the holidays. correspondent julia so delhi thank you jim. most times us says that by the end of this

year we'll of const $29000.00 jobs that's a 5th of its workforce the german airline says it's also planning to slice another $10000.00 jobs in 2021 although demand for flights has risen somewhat towards the end of the year. worldwide mean much of its fleet remains grounded the company has received substantial state this year due to the crisis by the end of the 3rd quarter it had recorded losses of 5600000000 euros. now let's bring in our financial correspondent in frankfurt chose to delay the chelsea that's worse than the funds i was previously announced right it is tons i have previously been saying it was going to cut about 22000 jobs by the end of the year that's obviously been increased quite a bit now in part that's because the house decided to sell its catering unit which accounted for about $7500.00 jobs but they also are cutting about $20000.00 jobs
11:18 am
abroad and as you mentioned they plan to now cut another $10000.00 jobs within germany next year and that's going to be very controversial because as part of the $9000000000.00 euros that lufthansa received from the german government this this massive bailout they had really pledged to try and not cut jobs in germany to try and preserve those jobs and they have been negotiating with the unions within germany but now they're saying that they they likely will have to cut jobs here as well that's in part because the airline industry is is really is still not seeing much of that bounce back they're losing a lot of money if they only expect capacity to ride out about 20 maybe 25 percent through the end of the year so it's really a much more difficult situation and they have been expecting us the island it's an industry wide problem of course who will survive this. well a lot of state carriers like photons have gotten
11:19 am
a significant amount of help from their governments it's not just of tons of air france. some airlines and italy is there has been a lot of support from europe for these airlines but they will face a lot of challenges going forward the industry is not expected to recover fully until maybe 20242025 even then these carriers will emerge from this much smaller they will have to make permanent job cuts they will have to let go of planes so the future for the industry looks much dimmer and much smaller. in frankfurt for us thank you charles. time for a few more headlines u.s. presidents donald trump's person a lawyer rudy giuliani has tested positive for corona virus yes reportedly been admitted still washington hospital but tweeted to say he feels fine the 76 year old has traveled extensively working to overturn trump's recent election loss.

special challenges as it looks ahead to the throne of virus vaccine rolled up. close welcome to the show i'm stephen busey in berlin a work has reportedly restarted on the controversial north stream to gas pipeline in the baltic sea almost a year after u.s. sanctions brought the german russian project to a standstill of the u.s. argues the pipeline is meant to isolate ukraine and divide the e.u. on saturday its ambassador to germany robin quintile repeated calls for germany to end the $1000000000.00 project. work is underway once again on the north stream 2 pipeline german authorities have given the go ahead for the russian ship academic cesky to lay another 2.6 kilometers of pipe by the end of the year but that is nowhere near enough to complete the project a total of 160 kilometers still have to be laid. only
11:32 am
then would the underwater pipeline be ready allowing russian state owned company gazprom to deliver site therion gas directly to germany. for that the u.s. has been watching developments with alarm late last week american lawmakers added measures against the baltic sea pipeline to the annual defense budget provide for tighten sanctions against companies that certify or insure the pipeline or if it supports north stream to with products facilities or services. the text in the defense bill would grant the next u.s. president the right to suspend the sanctions but that's something few experts on either side of the atlantic expect no matter who is in the white house. and for more on this i'm joined now by maria hsia ina she's a post-doc fellow at the center for eastern european studies at the university of zurich and she continues to follow nordstrom to really good morning work supposedly has already continued again on the pipeline this weekend the question now is how
11:33 am
far will it get. good morning and thank you for having me and there is no yes or no question to this it's very complicated and our student to really is sanctions that level for the by the administration on the one hand it wants to keep the pressure on the pipeline to halt on the other hand it pledges to revive the transatlantic relationship that are put in them each end of the debris and ministration that means that there is a thin line between not only in 1000 in the european partners but at the same time keep in the pressure on the pipeline at the new sanctions that were issued last week gives us an indication at least. what policy shift we can expect from the biden administration and show what more calibrated sanctions on private companies at the same time exempting the european governments and governmental institutions
11:34 am
plus if i can consult ations was utopian partners at the same time maria how much more effective will those sanctions be than what's already been on the table will they have more teeth. the added sanctions will definitely make the completion of the pipeline more complicated mauritius so gas promo will face difficulties in finding an insurance company and finding a company that would agree to provide any technology that still perhaps needs to be done on that at the interest. and company that will have to test inspect and certify the pipeline in fact the last one certificate geisha know be the weakest link in the project to find out the company it will be an arduous task. and even if it finds all of this companies that will be willing to be exposed to us sanctions and attention to lose access to u.s. financial markets there are still legal challenges in the e.u.

11:36 am
a headache for germany you can watch the report the report exclusively on our you tube channel at youtube dot com slash d w news. and over to asia now we're china's exports have been surging in november customs data showed there were more they were up more than 20 percent from a year earlier the fastest pace in more than 2 and a half years analysts say booming sales of items like refrigerators toasters and microwaves across the lock down world have helped to boost chinese manufacturing at the same time imports rose just 4.5 percent and that's led to a trade surplus for november of more than $75000000000.00 the largest ever since records began in 1901. and for more on this we bring in our financial correspondent frank for chelsea delaney chelsea we've been talking a lot about these numbers coming out of china and how they showed the economy's kicking up there what about these new numbers put that in perspective for us.
11:37 am
well it's another blockbuster month for chinese exports this has been a trend we've seen this year the chinese economy has really been the outlier it's the only major economy expected to grow this year and a lot of that is due to the strain to seeing and its factory sector and its manufacturing sector part of that is because china was the 1st country to get hit by the crown of iris and also the 1st to emerge from the virus so whenever a lot of other countries like those in europe were shutting down china was opening back up and so its factories have have really seen a lot of demand from that as well as the fact that the items that china produces a lot of are what's really into mans right now so things like masks and personal protective equipment as well as all of the technology behind home working in remote working that's all been really helping drive these export numbers up as well. the flip side of this story trade surplus seems to be the domestic consumption in china is very low what's going on there yes so as we've seen the export boom we haven't seen imports from china really keep up
11:38 am
with that and this is likely to be quite controversial and it won't really please china's trading partners china is balanced relationship with the rest of the world has really been a source of controversy in the global trading environment for years it's been the the source of this trade war between it in the united states and we've only seen that grow more and more pronounced during the pandemic we've seen this with this record trade surplus in november and that's because china isn't really importing as much as they're exporting to the rest of the world they have pledged to really try and rebalance their economy to try and get domestic consumption up and going but they've pushed that down the road a little bit because of the pandemic and so this means we likely will see china continue to dominate in terms of exports and that's not really something it's trading partners want to see all right to do any little frankfurt thank you. well german flag carrier lufthansa says that by the end of this year it will have
