see that. starts december 25th. the. up to date don't miss our highlights. program. w dot com hard work. you're watching news asia coming up today made in china vaccines have shipped to indonesia and soon to many other countries we take a look at how they stack up against the other vaccines developed in the west. plus we'll follow a young man who uses his own meager income to feed the even less fortunate in jakarta. and off the job and onto the pitch we'll catch up with these domestic workers in hong kong making their mark in the cricket world.
5:31 pm
i'm melissa chan welcome to news asia we're glad you could join us indonesia received its 1st shipment of covert 1000 vaccines from china this week as the government prepares for a mass inoculation program the vaccine developed by sinopec biotech will be evaluated by the indonesian food and drug authority for emergency use indonesian clerics are also expected to issue a whole lot of occasion for the experimental drug president joko widodo says these are only the 1st steps and more doses are on the way. we are also still working to get 1800000 doses of vaccine to arrive in early january of 2021. apart from getting the finished version of scenes. we are also getting $15000000.00 doses of
5:32 pm
raw vaccine within this month. and later 30000000 doses in january that will be processed by the state owned pharmaceutical company b o pharma. and indonesia isn't the only asian country looking at chinese vaccines rather than western options made by pfizer biotech where derna astra zeneca and others signed of that in china national biotech group recently announced approvals for late stage clinical tests in bangladesh and pakistan chinese companies have been mostly conducting tests overseas given so few covert cases in china itself for more we're joined by dr jerome kim director general of the international vaccine institute in seoul their partners include the world health organization and the gates foundation among others dr kim there's been so much news about the pfizer bio and tech vaccine and the astra zeneca one and then along comes this side of
5:33 pm
that vaccine and i feel like we haven't heard that much about this one what do we know it's so we haven't heard in general about vaccines that are not you know western mainstream operation works but you know chinese vaccine developers including side of back side of farm and kansai know have vaccines that have advanced into advanced stage a street testing for safety and efficacy you know cited back as one of the companies if you look at its vaccine it generates what we call neutralizing antibody at a level lower than a seeing pressure seneca for instance or johnson and johnson. but it does generate the neutralizing antibody and it also has a study where there are vaccine protective monkeys against infection so you know from a hypothetical perspective you would say that this vaccine has a chance and it would be very interesting to see their data when they're announced i think it's supposed to be later this month. so their data has not been announced
5:34 pm
in the same way that for example the pfizer drugs information has been made available yes and i think it may be something peculiar to the way the chinese system is set up because both side of back and sign a farm to have results that have been submitted their their files have been submitted to the chinese regulatory authority the m.p.a. for approval and neither company has commented on their face 3 efficacies now we did hear about these 3 africa see for sign a farm from one of the sites conducting a trial in the u.a.e. yesterday 86 percent percent of farm but we don't have any other information about this so it was and sent a farm itself has not commented so i think it may be something about the way the system is designed to handle efficacy data well i think we just saw shipments of the sign of that vaccine to indonesia and while china has done a stellar job combating kovac that wasn't the case in the beginning and there
5:35 pm
wasn't much transparency when covered 1000 was still a mystery mysterious illness i think it's reasonable for a lot of people to wonder about its taxiing development efforts given general transparency issues stereotypes about corruption connected with the state what would you say to anyone worried about the sign of a vaccine particularly indonesians who just saw the 1st shipment arrive in their country. you know i think that the we have to go with the data and and i guess we will have to trust the national regulatory authority in china of the n.p.a. to review the safety and efficacy data that way they would review any vaccine and we know that side of that and side of farm both have vaccines that are approved by the w.h.o. prequalification mechanism which allows those particular vaccines to be sold to us agencies for use around the world so both companies have experience with the u.n. based w.h.o. system for approvals and you know i think when they commit to providing vaccine to
5:36 pm
kovacs which is the global vaccine allocation and distribution mechanism that 190 countries a signed onto for covert 19 they're committing to w 2 prequalification right i think that the going on and start in indonesia is actually they're planning to test in effect of mistrials a number of different vaccines including can sign a sign of back and sign a form so indonesia is actually planning a rollout of those vaccines and very quickly here in south korea what vaccine is the government there buying actually the government here it was announced a few days ago is actually looking at a number of different vaccines so right now the only firm contract is actually zeneca but they've also indicated a desire to purchase from pfizer by antec from a derna and from johnson and johnson as well as getting their back seen allocation from the kodak smith mechanism to the hedging with

a good of vaccines dr jerome ken thank you so much for your time. thank you. the pandemic has hit all economies and around the world it's the poor who has borne the brunt of the financial pain in indonesia one man ahmad marzuki who doesn't make much himself has set an example for community service in this difficult here. by day. he works a low paid job in an office cleaning and fetching the coffee. but at night there's no rest he's out on the streets helping the homeless in jakarta. the coded 19 pandemic has been hard on the city's poor marzuki spends a quarter of its own meager income buying food to give to others.
5:38 pm
because of a pandemic many people think only of themselves they're worried that their salary will be reduced or about losing their job. there are many people who have lost their jobs sharing food with others is my way of showing i'm fed up with it because i'm healthy and have a job and a salary. 2 years ago a story with his 1st paycheck and he started using it to cook food for the pool. now during the pandemic he works even harder preparing simple meals to feed people in need.
5:39 pm
a long time ago when my parents were sick i went to a relative to borrow money. and he said but you were poor. how were you going to pay back that money and. it was then he decided to pay the good deed forward together with a group of friends. prepares dozens of meal boxes every day. you know because. i have to get that because i'm not afraid of not having enough money or god has promised that when we share what we have he'll give us more. music he and his friends make sure to follow all pandemic precautions when they hand out their meals lately they've seen an increase

in donations as the word spreads about jakarta's good samaritans. the world has come to know a lot about hong kong and its protest movement over the last 2 years so much so that many other stories from the territory have been overlooked for example that many of its upper and upper middle class families are served by migrant housekeepers mostly from the philippines and indonesia they work hard and have just sundays off here's a closer look at how some women are using their free day to team up. for. no. well drilled athletic they look like they could be a professional team before these filipino women crickets and all the rituals that go with it is a hobby for their rare day off on a sunday. it's a chance to one mind after a week cooking and cleaning for households in hong kong. it's very relaxing

with makes my day there's. worthwhile so it's good to listen to old strands in the us of all this. you know everything not just focusing on what you do let's get. back home in the philippines basketball or baseball or a sport typically captures the imagination of sports fans the s.c.c. divas are working on changing that they're a breath of fresh air in hong kong's cricket scene which is rooted in its british colonial past and now on the run of luck to be yours the girls have done so much good nudging dugdale getting better and they did a learning lot of for cricket instills an undead tooth he's discussing how to play cricket more and better. not that this creep need much teaching now they've won

their lake twice and around a bit in say far this season maybe even provided most of the prayers for a newly created philippines national team. so looking at the elsewhere you know really into that was different with focus on mine to set certain sports. and be deprived of guidance and closer to you know the support from all all else as a system into all this. having all the while they continue to rack up the runs scoring for success a welcome break from it's a job. that's it for today there's always more on dot com for slash asia and we're on facebook and twitter as well we leave you now with pictures from northern china it looks like snow but they're actually frozen water droplets in spots that have coated forests in a layer of larry white thanks for watching see you next time and goodbye.

mistress come to me and she told me now you will have to quit all your skin i feel very very sad that fortunately no one was to protect me. lopez gomez says the company directors eventually told her she didn't have to powder herself white but did nothing to stop the racist remarks when the tesco mass joined the ballot in 2018 she became its 1st ever black female dancer soon she realized the ballet mistress had a problem with her skin color. some time i'll just come out like chloe i'm not online and we can only see you because you are black or you and that music and we can only see you because you are black and during the rehearsal or by out there she was giving thought what bad thoughts we were supposed to put into our heads and one can see much wrong she told me i cannot give it to you because it's a very white and you are black and she laughed in my face. the interim artistic

director says the decision to not renew the dancers contract had nothing to do with lopez comesa skin color and that she'd prefer to handle the matter internally. this is hydropower completes your tips this week that's just very complicated so i don't want to comment on that i learned through the media that fear is apparently an issue here it's just my guys. but i also know other voices from the ensemble who say they've never experienced such an open atmosphere as here in the state ballet starts by the way lopez gomez has now received support from the world's most famous black ballerina misty copeland the principal dancer at american ballet theater praised her courage on instagram copeland has long been vocal about racism and ballet last year she posted this image from russia's bolshoi calling them out for using blackface berlin state ballet is now planning

a new code of conduct and says it must do more to fight racism chloe lopez gomez says it's not enough. she still bad to fire me but i have to regret that she didn't take any action regarding this is really mistress who discriminates me because she's. like nothing happened. chloe lopez says she was fired on that ballet mistresses recommendation she's now hired a lawyer and plans to take legal action. well it may be the most technically ambitious live music event of the pandemic the british band gorillas is playing a concert like you've never seen before with special guests live streamed from different countries some of them as holograms over the last 2 decades gorillas has become the world's most successful virtual band virtual because the official band members to the murdoch russell and noodle are cartoon characters. 7th album

physical well yeah. no of course i mean this is sort of the what girls have always done i mean years ago 2006 i think they opened the grammys it with a duet with madonna where madonna was live on stage and they were performing as holograms i mean so this is nothing super new for them i mean even look at like older videos they also like to combine this sort of combination of the real and then the virtual and. i mean it's interesting in some ways this is an art project i mean the whole idea was started as a comment a bit on the artificiality of pop music but what i find so interesting about gorillas is even though they are the world's most artificial band i mean they're literally created in a computer they have a huge dedication to live performance and always have them from the get go ok so these virtual performances may be they won't be sticking with virtual performances post pandemic no definitely not i mean all one has said very clearly if you want to get back on stage as soon as possible and they've already are poor planning to kick

sort of big hollywood stars the real focus this year on on local and chinese films but i think it's interesting because. it shows the great difference between. countries now because last year china was sort of shutting down because of coronavirus now in china the cinemas are open again and in some cases a box office is booming while over here in europe almost all cinemas are shut down and you can't get into the movies aren't they the biggest economy or the biggest consumer of movies now. yeah it is it's really really interesting because all the big blockbusters this year basically have been out of china you had a film of the 800 which is a big war movie which made 460000000 dollars just in china and for the 1st time this year china will be the biggest cinema market in the world past united states the 1st time in history that is absolutely tripping scroggs perhaps things are very much. a few headlines now a low key live streams were placed glitzy royal galahs the nobel prize ceremonies took place online with none of the winners present the swedish academy honored us
