it is and steve happy holidays every $100.00 to your i mean series happy holidays a way to stay safe. this is d.w. news live from berlin the head of germany german vaccine maker biotech pledge just customized protection and says his company can build a vaccine specifically tailored to the morning factious version of code 19 in just 6 weeks but he's also upbeat that biotech's existing back scene works against the mutated virus. meanwhile outbound traffic at u.k. ports remains paralyzed as e.u.
1:01 pm
states blocked british imports they're concerned that they'd also be importing the u.k. coronavirus very. russian opposition leader alexei navalny says he knows who nearly killed him with poison last august an associate of the ball nice tries to confront the alleged hit man and his detained by police instead. i'm sumi so much going to thank you for joining us german drugmaker bio on tech says it is highly likely that it's widely approved vaccine will work against the mutated strain detected in britain but the company said that if needed a version of the vaccine that specifically targets a new variant could be ready in a matter of weeks this comes as the international community grows more concerned by the new strain of covert 19 biotech's vaccine is authorized for use in more than
1:02 pm
$45.00 countries around the world already will buy into its chief executive told e.w. the new strain similarity to the existing one makes him confident in the vaccine. scientifically the likelihood is high that this is the case because even though this new valiant has multiple who taishan only one percent of this protein is changed and that means 99 percent is still the same and we know that what you want to sponsor the younger spawns that is induced by a vaccine this is attacking this protein on multiple sites so that the likelihood is high and that the vaccines. but we will get to the south into 2 weeks and then we can be right let's get some insight into what all of this means we have mohamed minear with us he's a viral legist at lancaster university in england mahama good to see you a good to have you back on the program so we just heard the c.e.o. of bio on tech there telling you that he is confident that his vaccine in its
1:03 pm
existing form can be effective against this new virus strain but he cannot be entirely sure given that information do you think that vaccinations could should still go on yes absolutely one of the prime reason is that this new variant would not really don't provide the vaccine i think is he is that the mutation that we have seen within the spike protein that the ones that make the cone shaped structure on the surface of the widest those are very few compared to the total length of the protein so the antibody response is already against the entire length of the protein so therefore even one or 2 mutations are good that's not going to completely made the vaccine ineffective so therefore the vaccines that are approved. and the biotech as well as the despisers that would be all effective because they did it is the immunity against the whole entire protein not just got a specific single point ok so that is good news but how dangerous is this new
1:04 pm
strain. yes that is something we are really concerned about is one of the things that has to be really sort of has to be recently is that out of 23 mutations that we have noticed but in this new variant 7 of them they are in the spike protein that make the surface of this widest and any mutation that come into the spike but it seems is of critical importance mainly for the transmission for transmission transmission of this wire is so if we look on to those specific mutation 2 of those mutations ordered critical side that allow the widest bite to oversell and turning to other body so that is making the virus more infectious more trust missable and i don't 70 percent higher transmission has been reported for this white as well that is really something that we have to look very carefully so it does not really dominate not only in the u.k. but beyond that let's talk about transmission of the head of germany's disease control agency was asked today whether he thinks that this new virus strain is already in the country here let's take a look at what he said. of all we know that this strain in the united kingdom was
1:05 pm
1st detected in september we also know that it was found in the netherlands and denmark this means there is a likelihood that this strain has already reached germany undetected from the torch i think the probability of this is a very very high horse. so mohamed if that's the case what do you think of these measures that have been taken of closing borders and stopping travel with britain. well one thing is really true so i mean is that you know if you recall from the very beginning of this and make most of the infections from one china move to other countries to travel through social contacts and so on so now that we have identified this new variant here in the u.k. certainly there are possibility that it is already reaching to other countries because it was 1st identified back in september and at that point it wasn't the dominance of chances for people to specifically because of that strain and then
1:06 pm
having the possibility to escape the test that is conducted on to the airport and that had to be really moving into any naive country and that is pretty slim but having said that we have to make sure that this strain is not disseminated not only in the euro but also in any other countries because if it has 75 percent more transmissible and if this becomes the domain experience that is going to make a really big trouble for the transmission and the inspection tool so how do we do that mohammed beyond the vaccine because that will take some time to get rolled out . well that is really the big challenge at this moment i think it is even more of what he some because we are in the festive season and even little to having this sad new variant the infection rate would increase and 1st couple of weeks and generally february would be very hard to do to have the height and weight off infections but i can don't leave it really to have the sizes that vaccine is. on the way to their efforts that we put out so far our work and just to make sure
1:07 pm
please follow all the little regulation that have been put in place on the shelf social contact on the face covering and to follow more than ever because this festive season is really major what he for me seeing behind him but i think the action in coming days virally just mohammed one year from lancaster university joining us thank you so much. well the country where the new more contagious strain of the virus was 1st detected britain is becoming increasingly isolated other nations have been banning flights to the u.k. stranding passengers at airports but there will be some respite for the long lines of trucks stuck waiting to leave britain the u.k. and france are reportedly restarting straight to traffic starting on wednesday trucks have been backed up for several kilometers at the english port of dover after france barred their entry. and we have our correspondent in dover. hill is standing by for us there hi charlotte good to see you tell us what the situation there is right now. saying the frustration is building
1:08 pm
among the hundreds of lorry drivers who is stranded here outside the ports in davis some of these guys have been here for 2 nights in a row now what you have to understand is of course if you're stuck on a motorway there are no toilet facilities these guys aren't having hot meals this really is a desperate situation for them they tell us that had they had any idea that this is what they would be facing they'd never tried to make this trip across the border a lot of them from the european mainland say that they just want to get home for christmas and although talks are ongoing today about how this resolution how this will be result there's no aunt says and so when these drivers will be able to move on one suggestion has been that said the drive is all tested for the current of ours before they enter front but there are big questions logistically about fast how that will work and then how long it will take so really is
1:09 pm
a very very difficult situation for these drivers here as they sit and they wait. this doesn't mean of course this ban from travel from britain it doesn't mean the trucks can't go the other way so why are there concerns about food supplies in britain. yes. the chaps can still come into the u.k. from france but a lot of drivers simply don't want to and you can see why you just behind me that concerned that this situation isn't going to be resulted in their return journeys they might be stuck in something a lot like this now the government has said that there shouldn't be any shortages of food for example in the short time that's partly because there's been a lot of stockpiling in the build up to the end of the brics a transition period in concerns that in the event of a no deal that there would be situation like this but you have to think about perishable food fresh food fruits and vegetables if this goes on for days and days
1:10 pm
the u.k. relies heavily on imports a day sort of thing so there are warnings of supermarkets about shortages in the medium time as things like citrus fruits left us for example but the public crucially is being warned not to stockpile the government saying that they are working hard to get this ever solved as quickly as possible and tell us what all of this means the border closures means for christmas plans i mean there are people who have family member stranded in britain or abroad. who the u.k. now as you said is essentially caught off for so many places and for those trying to reach loved ones over christmas this is a heartbreaking situation but christmas in essence for so many people in the u.k. has basically been canceled this year the public had been told that this previously that they would be able to see and meet their families they would be able to travel now with the emergence of this new variant of the current virus we're hearing could be up to 70 percent more transistor miscible those plans have now been counseled
1:11 pm
many spending christmas very sadly along the. charlotte show some poll reporting from dover there for us thank you very much. let's get caught up now on some other developments in the pandemic germany has reported its highest 7 day in. since right since the beginning of the pandemic the robert cock institute says there are nearly $200.00 infections per 100000 people in the u.s. congress has approved a new covered $1000.00 relief package the 900 $1000000000.00 deal provides aid to individuals and businesses hardest hit by the pandemic and taiwan has discovered a local transmission of coded 19 ending a $250.00 day virus free period health authorities say a woman in her thirty's has tested positive after a contact with a new zealand pilot thrown out some other headlines from around the world israel appears headed for its 4th election in 2 years it comes after members of the

1:14 pm
you know it's you know whatever it was it wasn't a good job of actually. the prominent critic of the russian government an anti corruption investigator fell ill while on a plane in russia back in august he was treated at a berlijn hospital and recovered. laboratories in europe confirmed that he'd been poisoned with a soviet era military nerve agent nabil chalk. now in a bar and he says he's uncovered new details on the plot to kill him. on a video of a phone call he says he duped a member of russia's domestic security service the f.s.b. into revealing details of the plot to kill him. during the 49 minute call the alleged agent admitted that nabil chalk was planted in a barney's underwear and that if the flight had been any longer things would have
1:15 pm
turned out differently. in response the russian government said novell me is suffering delusions of persecution i mean if a space at the phone call was a provocation and a foreign security services were involved. despite that response novelli says he will pursue legal action against the men who he says tried to kill him but. let's get the latest on the story now d.w. correspondent emily sherwin is in moscow for us hi emily how is the kremlin responding to this interview that involved a recorded. well of course the russian authorities have repeatedly denied any connection between russian officials and this poisoning we've just heard a statement from the kremlin spokesperson made to his cough who said that he hadn't
1:16 pm
watched the video but that me seems to have delusions of grandeur delusions also of being persecuted and he also commented on the fact that the video goes into great detail about where the poison could have been placed and perhaps well it seems it was placed on these underwear he said that there should be a friday and analysis about why he is so obsessed with his own across the area those were the words of the kremlin spokesperson he also referred back to a statement that we heard earlier from the f.s.b. yesterday they said that this video is a fake that it's a provocation aimed at discrediting the f.s.b. and agents of the f.s.b. so again firmly denying that but it's clear that this video which now has millions and millions of views on you tube will be a worry going forward as well for the kremlin ask you about those allegations of the video being fake in
1:17 pm
a moment but 1st we saw in the report that the police released lubov sobel but now 2 employees who work for a nobel news you tube channel have also been arrested tell us about that. so as far as we know those 2 employees of the you tube channel are still in detention yesterday they were questioned according to these team and they were they seemingly will be in detention until trial they're being questioned apparently on. disobeying the orders of the police and the boy who was she was released from detention but she now is potentially facing a criminal case for a century breaking into this alleged assassins apartment even though from what we saw in media reports and in her own live streams she was essentially just staking out his apartment sitting outside it for a long time in a car and she tried to ring the doorbell as well now she is facing
1:18 pm
a criminal case it does seem that this could be part of a crackdown on members of. these team that we could see going forward and i even heard one russian expert speaking about the fact that this could be part of a wider crackdown on other members of the opposition even members of the opposition that have nothing to do with these team and with this investigation after all for the kremlin it's really important to kind of keep control of the situation in this country this year next year as well ahead of upcoming parliamentary elections in the country which are scheduled to take place next year and emily what do we know about this you tube video from the volley how can it be verified. well we we don't know we can't confirm whether the voice on the other end of the line was the voice of this alleged assassin in part because we don't we can
1:19 pm
a 100 percent confirm that that assassin was really the the alleged assassin of viney now in the video itself he says that he is prepared to face a forensic audio analysis of the voice on the other end of the line but of course we can't and we don't have official confirmation that that is a real voice and that this this video is is truthful and real and just quickly given this you tube video do you think we could end up seeing a actual investigation into the poisoning. well that is still what members of the news team are demanding and there has been some movement on that last week now viney was apparently questioned by german public prosecutors in berlin where he is currently located on the request of russian authorities so we don't know whether there will be an official case opened here in russia but
1:20 pm
there does seem to be some movement on that front at least sure when reporting for us from moscow thank you. it's sports now and world football's governing body has filed a criminal complaint against its former president sepp blatter and several of his associates fifa says it has found evidence of criminal mismanagement of hundreds of millions of euros for a football museum project that potter said up to his lawyer says the accusations are baseless blatter headed fever for 17 years he was suspended and later banned by a by its ethics committee after swiss prosecutors filed criminal charges against him in 2015. empty stadiums have become a common sight since the outbreak of the pandemic the absence of supporters has changed the match day experience dramatically but for those watching at home technology does offer a substitute did anyone behind the scenes at a recent bundesliga match to see and hear the enhanced stadium experience.

here i don't offhand chance but without actual fans in the stands like every time to lose faulkner knows exactly what buttons to push to make the bundesliga experience from home sound as normal as possible the enhanced audio operator can react to almost every action on the pitch with the 20 sound effect at his disposal it's all done on this magic pad to see we have already got 7 slides i follow but with listening soledad they can always see the stadium. go and chances penalties you name it operators like falk now are ready for everything even for counter attacks right now so called attack we have this nice i've got here i like to run right now it's running the course of the course if there is a 50 something i then go past the royals and it's all in squalls not the go

maria has been here for 3 weeks. she had coded 19 back in march. the ferris is much much harder for me now i've always been very sporty including cycling a lot but after my father. the mountain and racing bikes. are miche time of the week now i can only put out 70 or 80 watts it's crazy now gas after an exam i don't think it's way below my training level but i still have pain in my lower lungs when breathing and wanted him but i found that maria was not in a high risk group and did not require hospital treatment for the virus but more than 5 months off to falling sick she's still not fit enough to work here at the clinic she's been working on have fitness every day in the hope to soon be able to
1:33 pm
return to her job as a doctor truck and to shop and i need a certain level of physical fitness to do my job because i don't just sit at a desk if you're a cop i have a lot of tasks that are quite physical life changing the bandages on big ones are running back and forth all day from the emergency room to the ward and fans many more as i'm in the operating room i'm standing for 8 hours a day holding some things to an aunt or stitching a wounded. man maria think she probably got close it 19 at work in the hospital. in fact from the very beginning my lungs hurt him and i got him monia and personally thought and so don't want to influence an income it completely bypassed my nose and throat area that you normally think are so key massive a high probably inhaled the virus directly direct in hell yet i was wiped out like never before or a moment when i finally got the strength to get out of bed i'd put some musically
1:34 pm
in a bowl but then have to go back to bed before i even got to read it it was an extreme exhaustion like i have never ever had the 4 democrats and so we're going to do a 6 minute walking test the aim is to walk as far as you can in the time allotted. a tweek soft affording sick maria went back to work even with pain medication she only managed 9 days in july she tried again when the increased pain levels and exhaustion returned she applied to come here. to the style breathless where you while walking still have to turn 5 and 6 did you manage 720 metres so you can creased from 671-2720 metres again and that i could it was actually the technique of walking that was the limiting factor rather than being out of breath

to. the head of the pulmonology departments professor rem but could surely says maria isn't an isolated case patients who are young and fit with no preexisting conditions and requiring no hospital treatment because it can still experience health problems months after contracting the virus. is enough to have to. we can see from the number of people seeking help that there are more patients suffering from post cope with problems than we thought even just a few months ago. and it's not just the classic older patients like we initially saw in the statistics. there are young people whose lives have suddenly been turned upside down for example because they're not fit enough to work with. the machines every patient that arrives at the shared clinic suffering from aftereffects that because it 19 undergoes a detailed examination to understand this virus fully adult has from different

fields of medicine need to work together but he. says i think it's important to be honest at this point and to say that we're in a learning process let's assume through the large amount of new data that we're getting every day here and if you annoy we can learn more about this virus. we try to pass on our findings to others to form. a lot of this data still needs to be checked. and. don't have a particular treatment strategy and the classic sense because we don't have years of experience to draw the corporate or a book with treatment recommendations from the last go but outbreak we're learning as we go as we care for these patients who are discovering what kinds of problems the virus can produce. and. by now doctors know that 19 affects multiple organs. from lung problems to hair loss to
1:37 pm
sleep disorders to teagan neurological disorders. then critical illness paula neuropathy heart problems the problem and plus issues resulting from the treatment in intensive care. we're seeing a multitude of problems and the list is growing and. i don't think we would have expected such a variety of issues it. talks about that maria has now moved on to the next examination spiral. the aim is to test how her lungs and other organs perform on to physical exertion she has one more week at the clinic here in this area. in the german capital has 80000 cases of 1000 since the start of the pandemic of those around 80 percent have recovered officially but like christopher not all

of them fully restored to house. but. i really have to catch my breath of course it's tiring. i've never been like this that actually. if i could go up the stairs and could go straight back down and up again now climbing stairs and. whenever i have to walk uphill i get out of breath. i do. 19 in mid march. all members of the family got infected. if this is going on that's how come we don't really know how we got it we were in austria and were not into a role where it was bad we came back on march 1st my oldest daughter went back to
1:39 pm
kindergarten for 7 days a virus was in the news but not big yet. at the beginning of march most people didn't see the virus as a major threat all the start of a global pandemic so christopher didn't take his symptoms too seriously. my oldest daughter had started kindergarten the previous something and since then i've had a permanent cold so always used to having cold symptoms that i'm. on holiday in austria i still felt fine. then we came back and i developed a sore throat and a bit of a coffee nothing serious i didn't have a temperature and neither did my partner. for the children had a slight temperature but that's not unusual jordan often do it was all relatively unproblematic. once that quarantine period was over they were considered officially recovered and were allowed to leave the house again but one month later christopher and his partner
1:40 pm
developed new symptoms. it was quite a long time before we realized that what we were experiencing was linked to covert 19 i have allergies and in may the start of the allergy season i suddenly started getting short of breath which i never had before. i usually took an anti-histamine . i had these few problems but nothing special about them so i thought well biology . they've gotten worse but i didn't link it to cope at 19. going out on the balcony because i felt i had to get some fresh air and i'd bend over to catch my breath. and have that about every 2 days. but then it rained and normally that would mean all of my allergy problems disappear. but i still got it and that's when i knew something was wrong. before.
1:41 pm
so christopher went to a general practitioner. but he wasn't really able to help. the doctor did like my symptoms the cove in 1000 but they weren't life threatening and not that major. was my fitness levels matched my body weight. but christopher has also recently developed an underactive thyroid which has caused him to put on a lot of weight 17 kilos to date it's not yet clear whether covais it can affect the thyroid gland. in the pasta christopher ran in the marathon but there's no way he could manage that right now. christopher's partner. also experienced problems after having cave at 19 but her symptoms are quite different.
1:42 pm
i felt dizzy and it just wouldn't stop but if i went to pick up my daughter romy then everything would just spin and spin a. fight i was afraid that it might never stuff out that this could be the new normal for me i was just at the warehouse. after 4 months dizziness finally tapered off it's now known that covert 19 was a trigger near an article issues. christopher is hoping that his breathing difficulties also disappear in time. international studies show that the lungs and heart can indeed recover from the virus given time the test shows maria's lung function is now back to normal 5 months after she caught the virus. make its height on the one hand i feel good because i'm getting lots of therapy here but on the other i keep thinking what will
1:43 pm
it be like after the therapy when i go back to work tomorrow. if i am all the year and how will things progress with his illness or will there always be issues or will i get back to the same level of fitness and quality of life that i had before. maria was lucky to get a place here waiting lists for patients with post covert problems. the show in clinical alone has a huge number of patients waiting for treatment. time here has now come to an end. in terms of fitness for the tiredness levels for teak have you noticed any change to the touch and have that may have changed but i probably won't know until i get back to work and see whether i can cope better with unaided. or if i'm still is tired yes i did.
1:44 pm
write about the chest pains. half and that is so many that the pain is better when i have therapy the whole time and i noticed over the weekend where there was less going on or when i had physio wednesday last week back and then the next time on tuesday that the pain in the base of my lungs returned fine but i still call this we're seeing patients who have symptoms some of which we can't really explain. and so we're trying to find answers and treatments it's like a black box. and whenever i can't explain and convey something in a way that's well founded it leaves a sense of uncertainty i freely admit that you're responsible to.

1:46 pm
