how much worse can really get. we still have time to i am going. to subscribe more views like. south africa is struggling to obtain a coronavirus vaccine with deaths from the virus mounting frustrations are growing as the nation now looks to wait months before a vaccination campaign begins. and betting on bio gas look at the energy source that germany hopes will help it in its reliance on fossil fuels. who are welcome to the show i'm stephen beardsley in berlin it's good to have you with us frustrations are growing in south africa as coronavirus deaths surged. there lockdowns intensify
5:17 pm
and vaccination campaign remains perhaps months away and figures on tuesday should more than 30000 deaths now in the country and south africa has yet to secure an agreement with vaccine makers even as does dozens of other countries have kicked off their own inoculation campaigns in order through the international kovacs facility meanwhile won't arrive until april at the earliest on monday a group of senior medical leaders in south africa called on the government to fire officials over the delays. now for more on this i'm joined by philip yvette in south africa philip nice to have you on the show what's behind these the lace we're not quite sure until quite recently the government position was and the the health minister literally tweeted this was that vaccines on a silver bullets and that there are non pharmaceutical interventions that are perhaps more important and he was very quickly taken to task by the medical
5:18 pm
community who said that's exactly what a vaccine is it is a sole bullet that's exactly what we need since then since then it was so we've seen a press conference where the government was talking about everything that it's doing and the messaging is definitely changed towards one that says we are working hard to land a vaccine but with no tangible plan and i think that's we must show of the frustration comes in there are no timelines there are no details of discussions they no details of funding is simply this message that says hang in there we will manage to find some of these vaccines doses now even the plans to rely on the kovacs facility haven't gone without a hitch have they. indeed and africa has in 3 kovacs will cover approximately 10 percent of the population not by the government's own estimate you need about 2 thirds of the population cut it before you start making a dent they won't be significant coverage even of people who are at high risk and people on the front lines with what's coming through kovacs and many other nations
5:19 pm
and frankly nations that are less developed nations that are in more trouble will be 1st in line we believe more doses from kovacs so it's very clear that at this point what we require are discussions with the pharmaceutical companies around the world who can supply on a commercial basis we're going to are there in south africa because of this i mean there were trials for a lot of these companies in south africa i believe for these vaccines were there not. and there might be a very large manufacturer of johnson and johnson's vaccine in south africa there's a facility in portland but that will be churning out on a contract basis for johnson and johnson's. we've had trials we have manufacturing and yet there is no certainty whatsoever that any of those vaccines will be available in south africa we're hearing the leaked rumors of conversations between the likes of pfizer for instance and the government we hearing that pfizer actually offered a discounted price to the south african government and was perhaps not taken up on that offer so the sense that

a lot of south africans are getting now is that the south african government hasn't hasn't managed to do what is necessary and increasing you are seeing opposition parties civil society organizations and society as a whole bringing a lot of pressure to bear on that already the reporter philip diverge joining us from south africa thank you very much. over germany no where to we shareholders have voted to allow the berlin government to take a stake of up to 25 percent in the illing anglo german holiday operator the state aid package comprises up to 1250000000 euros and 2 we had already profited from earlier stage support last year we needed more money to stay afloat due to travel restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic. a question now does the bailout solve to ease deeper seated issues our financial correspondent chelsea delaney in frankfurt doesn't think so take a listen this deal with german government rescue package is a much needed lifeline for t.v.
5:21 pm
which has been hit very hard like all travel related industries by the coronavirus seen booking this really fall off a cliff because of lockdown measures because of travel restrictions they've also had to spend a lot of money to refund their customers for canceled trips so this money will help them get through this period but it's really only a band-aid for the larger problem they have an immense amount of debt about 4500000000 euros as the end of at the end of last year so even once that corona virus crisis is over if this is going to continue to haunt them they will continue to struggle to pay down this debt and they are looking at other options still things like selling off parts of their business selling off hotels cruise lines potentially mergers it is a much bigger problem that this government bailout is not going to fix. our financial correspondent chelsea delayed their force in frankfurt well move fast and break things is a well known tech motto in this case from facebook but moving fast in the tech

world has generally meant moving without unionized employees who might challenge an even slowdown managerial decision making google is now changing that trend with a new union seeking to give employees a voice. tech companies such as google have seen little demand for unions over the years will handle things ourselves seems to have been the motto but times change google has seen several protests recently including on the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace the newly founded alphabet workers union now wants to give such protests a structure. so well mr brown really a. week. at the. rather than. individual. fair wages without exploitation or discrimination as well as

a greater say in company affairs are the main goals however it remains a nisha pursuit of the more than 130000 employees worldwide only around 225 have joined the new union but the example has been set efforts have also been made at amazon for some time now to an established employee organization. in the u.s. one of the big stories on the new york stock exchange in recent weeks was the expected delisting of 3 chinese tech firms all of them targeted in a recent u.s. executive order prohibiting americans from investing in a list of companies the government says is linked to the beijing government on monday the n.y.s.e. canceled that the listing leaving some to scratch their heads. as if trade and diplomatic relations between the u.s. and china couldn't get any foggier. the new york stock exchange had an announced it was delisting 3 communications giants china telecom china unicom and china mobile.
5:24 pm
the delisting followed an executive order from president donald trump which barred american investments and chinese firms owned or controlled by the military now the exchange says it's changing course after talks with quote relevant regulators but today's announcement is not undoing the mounting tensions. this expression of chinese firms has a limited impact on these chinese companies but it will harm the u.s. his own national interests and the image of that country as well as the global position of the u.s. capital market has changed. the about face from the new york stock exchange has been called bizarre by some market watchers and is leaving traders smarting from the whiplash. but this saga could continue in its statement the new york stock exchange added they will keep an eye on whether these companies can remain listed.

o 2 tax which took effect on january 1 and makes fossil fuels like natural gas and diesel very expensive does not apply to bio meeting. still until now buy only thing has always been a niche product in germany. we set ourselves the goal of phasing out fossil fuels for energy production by 2050 that means that anywhere that natural gas is being used it can be replaced by bio methane in the future it works for heating your house it can be a heat source for industry and it can run your vehicle. does the stuff on. the ends all part of the sea short term opportunities refueling trucks by a meeting could replace liquefied natural gas and diesel but at the moment by a meeting costs about 6 times more than natural gas so earning a profit is still uncertain farmers are reluctant to invest in bio
