like that i'm does something to a driver menace said to meet at your bellowing noise that signifies. the greatest does this buzzing sound. india doesn't have such an immediate and powerful impact but it could come to signify another kind of power that expressive in its own right power don't we don't the challenge is to develop that power for electric cars. to move e.t. . disempower. car dealer benyamin dad it says a timid buzz just doesn't do it for him he loves the full throated growl and roar of $500.00 horsepower. fuel. that's just part of it for many people with. the big engine big sound great sound like soft that means performance passion fun behind the wheel when everything good

and exciting about driving as you head into the sunset in your sports car to move on and going for it. but how can a lector vehicles be fitted with a truly authentic sounding fake sound. in this we're going 151617 kilometers an hour the noise is minimal i'm going to tweak the sound quality. i've just boosted the higher frequencies. a new e.u. regulations says new electric cars will have to be equipped with an acoustic vehicle alerting system which makes a sound at low speed entering reversing. the. it's not that the e.u. wants to make the world sound better and cooler for us all it's about safety you have to be able to hear if an electric car is just 10 meters away heading at you or
3:47 am
20 kilometers an hour. and the sound has to be distinctive and easy to hear this was fish cut out for one sound design or just want to shape the experience of those inside a car as well as outside it's also about branding. the spot i'm 50 years ago most eighty's had a special distinctive sound and it had to do with the substance of the cars the sound was authentic just much of it also came to stand for stability and safety those times over now you can fake everything so you keep wondering does anything actually sound like what it really is. driving pleasure reliability safety and authenticity can a sound be designed to suggest all that. well it does seem like everything can be imitated reproduced or fake these days and often quite convincingly other battery or combustion engine cars still roll along

roads but if the entire journey were virtual across viruses decimated global terrorism there's one sector that stands to benefit from the pandemic and its associated travel bans are virtual reality industry after all just because we can't travel doesn't mean we can't be transported. headfirst into the virtual world can we really go on a journey without travelling and how does it feel i'm giving it a try. i've always travelled as a reporter but i've also travelled a lot in my free time i've backpacked through asia and australia. and i'm starting to get itchy feet again i wouldn't say that times have changed. i take a church to the id experts at the university of hamburg french dynaco runs
3:49 am
a research group studying human computer interaction zz i'm going to take a trip in his virtual reality laboratory. teleport at the touch of a button i can fly anywhere i desire automatically. i'm back at the old as a rock formation in the australian outback. while. the view is incredible. but it's not australia i can't feel the hot wind or hear any animals. i travel to the all goes almost 20 years ago we spent many a night out in the open it was a journey outside of my comfort zone and one on never forget it was hot and not all the animals were friendly you can ever have virtual experiences like that ok i need
3:50 am
. to know we mostly experience things with our eyes and ears you have no sense of touch or temperature here to include all the senses you'd need to wear special equipment like a david suit david gloves and lots of cables that's not what we're aiming for and it's not really available yet anyway because it is but virtual reality does make more extreme travelling possible i can take a drive on the moon for example or i can climb mount everest things i could never do in real life. in the gaming industry is at the cutting edge of virtual reality towards in one game well traveler my avatar randomly landed somewhere on the planet my job is to figure out where i am. the tourism industry hardly uses virtual reality it's cool that it's dealing with other problems at the moment of the coronavirus pandemic and the other problems lie ahead
3:51 am
technology is moving forward at m. bracket pace many believe that in the not too distant future but all journeys will become competition for tourism in the real world. in the next 510 or 20 years and we'll have virtual worlds that you won't be able to distinguish from real life at least in terms of sound insight as much so that means we'll have to develop a new sense to know if something's real or not exactly and it's interesting ethically i may always have to tell people that the reality is virtual real and we're always having problems like that today i can't tell if the nooses fake or a photos have been retouched and really our technologies of the future will bring them to a whole new level. mixing up realities that won't happen to me it's easy for me to tell that this journey is virtual it's great but i feel sick now i need a break. sometimes your movement in the real world doesn't match what you're
3:52 am
experiencing in the virtual world it can lead to a conflict of the senses you're visually experiencing something different than the body is and it can lead to feeling a bit queasy that was exciting but i'd rather travel in the real world this year i'm going to go on a bike till it's good for social distancing and good for the environment. and while we're talking about 2 wheelers what comes to mind when you think about a motorcycle rally burly men clad in leather you may be behind the times the fact is more and more women are heeding the call the open road and in recent decades they've carved out their own space for clubs rallies and group rides and with them their own market brands are beginning to take notice. well to buy one that's long been dominated by men. the

3:54 am
a quarter to almost 5000000. but still more than twice as many men have mark to bike licenses the industry remains very male centric. it's difficult when you go into a store i wanted something for me with different sizes and i was kind of intimidated their only guys in the store there guys they don't like even talk to you or if i wonder always with my friends. to introduce themselves to my friends but they don't even like shake my hand that's been in my home to see awareness is growing and as a target group were taken more seriously but there's still a long way to. for the motorbike market gets more female friendly especially in terms of clothing so nothing since attention to it. in the past women were often just used as decoration to sell much to buy. but that's

changing floating the industry is taking note women by kids are a force to be reckoned with. these women are born to be wild the global motorcycle market is writing high with some 100000000000 euros in 2000 to 18 it's expected to keep growing and that's some part to women. 2 wheels 4 wheels big car or small louder quiet transportation and travel is changing and we're getting from a to b. maybe the main objective will never be the only reason for getting behind the wheel or the handlebars we're glad that you came along for the ride today that's all for this week's made see you next time and the mean time to be sure to check us out on twitter and facebook.

this is the g.w. news live from berlin i agree supporters of donald trump stormed the u.s. capitol they reached the inside of the chamber where low bankers were meeting to certify joe biden's election victory a joint session of congress has returned to resume their proceedings. welcome to the program supporters of president donald trump have stormed the u.s.
4:01 am
capitol building in washington protesters entered the chamber will lawmakers were meeting to certify joe biden's election victory congress then went into an emergency recess for hours later lawmakers resume the joint session police had ousted protesters and confirmed that one woman shot in the unrest has died a 12 hour curfew issued by the mayor of washington has since come into effect with the national guard now deployed. after proceedings resume to certify the electoral college votes house speaker nancy pelosi issued a defiant message saying the attempt to disrupt the count had not succeeded. we know that we're in difficult times but little could we have imagined the assault that was made on our democracy today to those who struggle terrorists from arrest
4:02 am
sponsibility you have sales to those who are engaged in the gleeful desecration of this our temple of democracy american democracy justice will be done d.w. correspondent stefan simmons joins me now stefan iraq's on the streets of washington this evening what's the situation like there now. when right front of the capital as you can see here right behind me still about we were about half a kilometer away from the capitol building and there's still national guard here the entire d.c. national guard of to see of the district of columbia has been activated that's of course not all of it that's just a few days a lot of buses in the back and why are those buses in the back there because police which was in force here law enforcement which was by the hundreds here to basically block off everything and fight off potential troublemakers here they're all 'd now
4:03 am
pulled back into those buses and ready to go back into their barracks probably not right now here maybe 2 or 3 protesters maybe they have no place to stay somewhere but it's a lot of press and llobet more some law enforcement to keep this curfew which is in effect here in the united in washington d.c. until tomorrow 6 am local in place but it's all peaceful now and of course a far cry from what we have witnessed before a few hours back. we know one woman was shot and killed what more can you tell us. now there's not much information it is indeed the one woman who was shot inside the capital that is confirmed she was later declared dead at the hospital and the only other fact we know and what we have confirmed is that this is an open investigation of course and that the district of columbia police department is leading this
4:04 am
investigation and besides that there's no more to know as of now about this incident there's also reports about a few people getting injured but we have also no details about this for now state as stay with us there stefan let's take a closer look now at what actually took place when some supporters had breached security and said the u.s. capitol. chaos unravels that capitol hill as the building is stormed by hundreds of trump supporters. of battle ensues between riot police and the protesters as they break past security. things stormed the senate chambers to prevent congress from certifying joe biden's election victory literally bringing democracy to a halt. trump released a recorded message telling his supporters to go home but repeated false election
4:05 am
claims. we have to have peace so go home we love you you're very special you've seen what happens. when violence was branded as a siege by president elect joe biden who urged them not to go home to storm the capitol to smash windows to occupy offices the floor of the united states senate rummaging through desk on the capitol of the house of representatives threatening the safety of duly elected officials it's not protest it's insurrection. the crowd started to dissipate ahead of a 6 pm curfew. but the entire national guard stands alert for potential violence throughout the night. and we heard from donald trump to even while asking processes to go home he uses inflammatory
4:06 am
language language what's the reaction been. the reaction was the reaction was exactly what you could have expected it took hours for police and law enforcement take to remove people from the grounds of the capitol and from inside the capitol this is mixed messages the president sends out a says i go home in peace you did what you did now it's time to go all peacefully but you a very special and everybody almost it's almost like saying everybody can understand that you did what you did and of course people took this as mixed messages so this was a process to get people off the ground over there this took from 23 pm local time here till 567 o'clock almost 34 hours to actually get people 'd out here and now again there is no more protest behind me or anywhere else in the city as far as we can tell it is really this curfew is in. force and people have dispersed but.
4:07 am
the president again no clear. message of them nation for example bought mixed messages to the protesters and that was quite a sight to see definitely stiffened you've been covering the u.s. election over the last year and you've seen your fair share of violent protests did this come as a surprise to you. absolutely have to say i've never ever seen anything like it i would have never ever guessed to see anything like this this is . this is historic in a way this is unbelievable and. i don't think i'm alone as a reporter in trying or struggling with how to describe this really and how to actually approach all this you know what we have witnessed and we were there in the afternoon outside saw people scaling the walls of capital and then breaching
4:08 am
further on this was make no mistake an absolute security meltdown for capitol hill police this is a nightmare that was a nightmare come true and this has repercussions this will have repercussions and i think everybody here press regular people all over the country maybe even they will be looking at those pictures we have all see you know and say how is that even possible i would have never thought this possible it happens now the session just sissified joe biden's an election victory has resumed in the building behind you but i mean expecting there tonight. we're expecting them to go on i think the senate's a joint session of senate and house the leadership there are determined to go through this of course this is involved involves a little bit of pain there's a long hours for those senators and those representatives but i think they're all a little bit of shellshock too. because of what happened earlier so i think they're
4:09 am
going on that's at least information we have to go in on to certify and to count the electoral votes and there may be doing this all night and then go home for a late breakfast or we will see i would assume they're doing this for quite a few more hours and then have recess again and then meet early in the morning and proceed with this but could also be that they're going through the night. stefan simmons in washington many thanks. now darrell west joins me now from washington he's with the brookings institution where he's the vice president and director of governance and studies welcome to day mr west 1st of all can i get your reaction to what we've seen today in washington. today was completely shocking i mean this was an insurrection it was an act of sedition it was an attempted coup but the good news is the coup trailer it was 3
4:10 am
hours of hell where writers and protesters occupied the u.s. capitol building broke buildings assaulted police officers i was all a completely shocking but now congress is back in session they are calling the roll they are about to a certified joe biden's president so yes so the good news is a bite will be inaugurated 2 weeks from now but today it was completely shocking in terms of all the violence that took place. what do you think this day will mean for donald trump and for supporting us. i think this is really turning point for donald trump i mean he has been making false accusations about you know winning the election in a landslide being falsely denied him that this election all the allegations of voter fraud they've been dozens of u.s. courts that have considered the evidence nobody has ruled in trump's favor including judges that were appointed by president trump and i think the fact that
4:11 am
trump gave this speech today in d.c. and basically encourage those individuals ability i think even republican senators who've been talking about this in the last hour or so have been denouncing him mitch mcconnell has denounced him what do you is defending of the violence very few people are siding with the president trump on this so i really do think it's a major turning point and even republicans feel that we've reached a point where a novice enough with donald trump you said a congressional republicans have been denounced and what is this what's happened today mean for the republicans who have been supporting. well there were a number of both house and senate republicans who were basically hoping to set up a fraud commission to investigate the allegations and report back in 10 days that idea has very little support right now that clearly is not going to happen biden is
4:12 am
going to be certified. as the next president of the united states and so i think republicans are really going to have to ask themselves you know what they had hoped to gain through all of this i mean we had the georgia senate races yesterday the 2 democrats won in surprise victory so we're now going to have a democratic president democratic house and a democratically controlled senate that's actually great news for president biden but it really puts republicans back on their heels they really need to think about the role that they've been playing and the anti-democratic behavior that they have been encouraging. how many people outside the u.s. have been following these developments and really asking themselves if the democratic process in the u.s. is still intact do you think democracy has been damaged tonight. what today certainly was a wake up call for american democracy and we have huge problems in terms of money
4:13 am
and politics trumps false claims the news media are not being very constructive social media is spreading false and extreme views and creating a lot of disapprobation and mis information so we need to get serious about addressing these problems but i do believe america is very resilient it was a very terrible afternoon today we're going to overcome this we're going to move forward and we're going to address some of the problems that led to today's disgraceful actions what about the a american political divide you think the events of today will deepen the divide in in the u.s. so will people tend down the political rhetoric well america certainly is very divided and is likely to remain divided for the foreseeable future but i do think that people are going to step back from this moment it was just so shocking i
4:14 am
mean it was like a foreign attack on the united states except we did it to ourselves it was americans attacking other americans and people are completely shocked by this and i do think there's serious soul searching that's going to lead people to talk to their adversaries a little bit more to think about the political reform so it make a difference that would improve the way our government functions there are lots of substantive problems both in domestic and foreign policy that we need to address so if we're fortunate this will be a learning moment where we all think seriously about how to come together as a country and how to constructively address the problems that we face darrell west with the brookings institution thank you very much thank you. you're watching g.w. news live from berlin october 19th special is up next in just a moment i'm also in berlin thanks for.
