demand for smartphones and tablets were told to industry analysts to find out more . and talk in office muffins have you ever tried one that's made in germany to show you what's on offer. welcome to the new business on want to get john's in the end good to have you with us now less than a week before his inauguration president elect joe biden has unveiled a 1.9 trillion dollar rescue package for the u.s. economy the american rescue plan would give individual u.s. citizens pay out of $1400.00 each on top of the $600.00 checks already passed by congress the plan also includes high unemployment pay as well as a hike in the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour i can imagine the plan comes with an enormous price tack to which joe biden had this to say i know what i just described is not come cheap the failure to do so will cost us through the consensus among

leaders congresses we simply can not afford not to do what i'm proposing. let's talk a little bit about the cost and the potential impact with our financial correspondent frankford com a good morning to you so if this plan is passed by congress how much impact will a 1.9 trillion dollars stimulus have on the u.s. economy. well monica the amount is huge $1.00 trillion nearly 2 trillion u.s. dollars that's $2000000000.00 u.s. dollars if this is not a strong stimulus i don't know what is the simplest supposed to work. both stabilizing effect for the economy and by a boosting effect you know so many americans simply have run out of cash many people have to sell their cars they struggle to finance housing but you know to have a roof over your head and to have a car and particularly in america preconditions to be able to go to work at all so
7:19 am
here the money will have a stabilizing effect it's also important is that a lot of money will be used to boost the rollout of the corona vaccinations in the u.s. only if america manages to get the virus under control the economy will be able to operate and to grow again but all of this costs a lot of money and we know that the u.s. has accumulated and enormous amount of data already investors worried at all that this might just become too much. yes they are money not so much because of the sustainability of the debt if america manages to continue to convince the world that its column is strong and will get strong again the country will be able to borrow what people in particular on wall street are nervous about is higher taxes if taxes eventually are raised this could put a huge question mark on the significant increase on the stock markets we've seen.

in france and thank you so much despite the u.s. threatening sanctions work on the old steam to pipeline is to resume today once finished it will deliver russian gas to europe which makes it one of the continent's most controversial energy projects. about 150 kilometers to go just before the end of the year the north stream 2 consortium said it had completed laying pipes for the project in german waters work is to continue in danish territory but the project has turned into much more than an engineering challenge. a 1200 kilometer underwater dual pipeline north stream one has been delivering natural gas from russia to germany since 2011 north stream 2 was to start operating last year it's nearly completed but construction work has been disrupted in recent months that's
7:21 am
a no small part due to harsh criticism by the us government the trump administration insists north stream to undermines europe's overall energy security and provides russia with a dangerous amount of leverage also the us is eager to increase its own natural gas sales as a result washington has been threatening to impose sanctions on companies that are involved in north stream 2. in germany the state government of mecca and burke western pomerania has created a foundation to promote natural gas as an environmentally friendly bridging technology. but the foundation will also purchase essential equipment from north stream to aiming to guard companies that are part of it from sanctions. the world's biggest comic is from toyota to fox and they all have been forced to halt all slow production atom is a global shortage of a semiconductor chips these chips are a crucial part of modern day costs but also for many other devices just take
7:22 am
a look semiconductors are key to our digital world this is a 200 millimeter wafer it's packed with thousands of transistors a few nominee tis in size they're invisible to the naked eye but they are obviously essential to products like this thin way for power they power electronic devices some some intel taiwan's t s m c are among the biggest producers chances are that you're watching this right now thanks to a semiconductor made by one of them and these circuits are in in phones in computers t.v.'s cars and some cars need more than 100 of them but because of global demand for semiconductors is soaring right now car makers find it increasingly difficult to get enough of the semiconductor. for 2 as a result folks lock in has slowed production down in germany ford nixon and fi at

chrysler have taken similar measures let's talk a little bit about all of that now and i'm joined with ana marie abased and she's head of country risk and industry research and fitch solutions in a fog in the united kingdom good to have you with us so could you 1st of all tell us a bit more about the scale of disruption that comic has currently experiencing. yes good morning this is global disruption as far as the carmakers are concerned we're hearing reports of their operations in asia in year in north america all being disrupted for some of them they're able to just close for a day some they're just reducing hours at some of their factories and for some they're closed longer term and of course this comes at a time when they're trying to increase their sales because sales are starting to take again after the pandemic and so we're also seeing reports of some carmakers
7:24 am
trying to be strategic in how they allocate the chips that they do have so ford for example gave an example day in north america it's prioritizing its best selling models for the chips that it has and this is the problem down to the pandemic or is the problem down to 2 people buying more smartphones i mean they've been they've been around for a while and there were enough semiconductor chips there before. yes and it really is the pandemic that really heightened the demand certainly for consumer electronics as people are staying at home or that buy more devices people working from home more as well as increased demand from data centers but also we've seen a big increase in demand from the medical devices sector so for things like ventilators and for diagnostic equipment and during the height of the pandemic it was easy for the chip makers to allocate extra capacity to the sectors because the car makers were cutting back on production they weren't selling as many cars but
7:25 am
now that that demand starting to increase again there isn't really enough capacity to go around so that's how we've got to the situation we're in at the moment i let's talk about the capacity for one did carmakers simply missed to order enough chips before hand and why are the makers of the conductor's not simply ramping up production. really comes down to the process is the used by both autos and chip makers and that's the just in time process and we've heard a lot about this year in the pandemic you know stockpiling isn't really common in the industry. and we saw during the pandemic that it's very quick when there are disruptions sarette the supply chain. so in the early days when chinese factories started to close down suppliers and come i guess it was just a few days before there were problems in south korea and then problems in europe with supplies and so this is more down to the process rather than them and not
7:26 am
being prepared for chip micah's. increasing capacities are really complex process and it's also very expensive so we're not going to see them building new factories for example right well anna marie based and head of also is country risk and industry resurgence that solutions thank you so much for your time thank you the global smartphone market is mainly dominated by products from asia and the us a did you know that there are also smart phones made in germany and they're sustainable to. silicon valley it isn't but the little german village of is home to high and sustainable mobile phone technology brothers karsten and samuel of all that are media designers who are unhappy with the big smartphone makers and so shift was born. in some 3 dimension people said we were crazy when we started shipping how they said it won't work it can't you can't make
7:27 am
smart phones in such small numbers designed in germany and made on a small their production line in china it's not possible to go inching up with. this new. well it's been possible for 6 years now with investors and so far the 2 brothers have sold 60000 mobile phones mainly in german speaking countries you design. we use repair statistics designer gadgets and that's important because we want to make sure our devices last as long as possible shifts battery and components are easily replaced that makes the phones long lasting on top of that shift buys back used phones and sells them on this stain of a model helps the company's 40 employees generate 7000000 euros in sales last year before i'm going to do is to move toward not interested in making a stack of money we want healthy growth and if that means operating in his needs
7:28 am
then that's fine but we do see that we're gathering a considerable following an outsider sustainability bubble and. that could perhaps be because shifters compares well with other brands and if set up right collects far less data than standard google android gadgets grows and. that's why we've got shift o. s. lately it's basically the same operating system but without google's services. the regional consumer protection agent philip pelts has come across shift phones a few times the same with fair phone even if the 2 companies are small operations he says they're important. it's really great we've got these 2 phone makers they prove it can be done sustainably that the things can be easily repaired that you don't have to rely on android's market dominance that you can impact their
