this is day of the news lines from the land germany is already in a tight lock down but even tougher restrictions look to be on the way with worries growing of a new variant of the coronavirus chancellor angela merkel will hold talks with state leaders today over what more can be done to break bring down deaths and infections also on the program in washington d.c.
9:01 am
preparations for wednesday's inauguration are overshadowed by fears of further unrest at the capital our correspondents report from behind the security cordon about a city on edge. and finding comfort where they can the e.u. has pledged help to ease a dire situation on both me as border to croatia the so found little of it has reached the stranded migrants. i'm rebecca races welcome to the program german chancellor angela merkel and state leaders have brought forward a mating to discuss extending coronavirus restrictions in a bid to get ahead of new more transmissible variants of the virus the current measure is a jew to expire at the end of the month but now new and even a stricter measures could be on the way. what streets and berlin and most who do
9:02 am
venture out are wearing masks and it seems to be helping there's been a slight drop in the number of coded 19 infections but the government is preparing to further tighten restrictions in bilin is say that's a good thing. i think being strict to make sense and i'm hoping this will finally bring it all to an end. i really hope that we realise that we'll have to put up with these restrictions until at least the summer. when half of the chancellor angela merkel will discuss tougher restrictions with state leaders to meet concerns that new virus mutations could cause a surge in new cases. highly infectious variants of the corona virus have been detected in germany one variant of spray 3 great britain the other through south africa and at the moment we have further warring reports from brazil . some opposition politicians are

calling on the government to do more to stop people from going to work. perhaps at least possible for about 40 percent of all office workers to work from home last week only 14 percent did so we did better even during the 1st lock down so there is room for improvement. also on the agenda after various made f f p 2 must compulsory in shops and on public transport they have higher filtering capabilities and it said the federal government is considering a nationwide adoption of the measure but these masks are more expensive people who can't afford them will receive his. with health officials saying case numbers remain too high tougher restrictions are lucky to be announced. of more i'm joined by dave w. political correspondent named. in a good morning so machall and the state premiers meeting today we had some of the
9:04 am
possible new measures in that report what else could they potentially introduce there are those 3 key points that are on the agenda which would qualify as new tighter measures if they're imposed nationwide number one is of course the those mosques in some regions it's already compulsory to wear more professional face masks on public transport and then supermarkets so some people are calling for them to be compulsory in those areas nationwide but the social democrats for instance say that f.p. 2 mosques are too expensive but even they are open to medical mosques becoming compulsory and that would of course include the cipro doctors mosques that we know from hospitals for example number 2 would be to impose a nationwide curfew at night but there's a lot of resistance against this measure and number 3 is to force companies to have more people work from home office workers that is so there are many questions that are open what does seem to be clear is that the existing measures will likely be
9:05 am
extended until mid february at least and there are already quite strict. about enforcing the regulations that are already in place rather than further restricting people. well yes and particularly when it comes to getting people to work from home more because of course it is a bizarre situation at the moment you can only meet one person outside of your own household in private but you're together with 10 or so colleagues for 8 plus hours in the office and that of course risks undermining people's understanding and acceptance of the measures and they have been many appeals by politicians employers but they're not working as well as they should we had that in the report so some politicians are saying the last resort would be to really enforce the provision that they have in place by law which says employers of office workers have to prove why it's necessary to have people work in the office rather than from home now we have seen as a downward trend of infection rates of late is that a reason for cautious hope well the thing is they're not going down as fast as is
9:06 am
necessary even though large parts of public life have been closed since november and there's a big big fear of those mutations we simply don't know enough about that and many hospitals are feeling the strain there also $6000.00 people per week who have died on average lately and that is a lot considering there are $83000000.00 people in germany and so at least the vaccination program has started but the big question is how do we get through those next couple of weeks that are going to be very hard on will be revealed later today when one has a thanks very much. u.s. president elect joe biden's tame says he will not lift coronavirus travel restrictions from europe the u.k. island and brazil the comments come off the outgoing president donald trump announced those coves would be lifted from january 26th

a militarized still. in the u.s. capital remains under a strict locked on just days before the presidential inauguration we are just outside the closed perimeter and this is as close as the general public can get to the u.s. capitol which is currently cordoned off by a 3 meter high fence and razor wire which is currently installed on top of the fence we're going to go inside the perimeter to get a glimpse on the preparations that are underway for an inauguration day that will be unlike any other in american history. soldiers instead of visitors some 25000 members of the national guard a securing the capitol grounds. there has been some concern about a potential inside threat as not everyone is happy with the new president it's a sticky situation is forced politically and. i have my own i have my own thoughts below equally but in uniform i you know i can't convey them but i'm here to do
9:09 am
a job i'm here to follow orders organizations doing and we're carrying on with that mission. ladies and gentlemen the president of the united states joseph jr and on the west side of the u.s. capital some normalcy is coming back we her salutes and soundchecks where 2 weeks ago thousands of trump supporters stormed the symbol of american democracy. the rehearsals for the inauguration ceremony were just completed and on this very long usually thousands gathered to cheer for their new president well this year many things will be different fear of an attack on the president means a ceremony with hardly any guests the national mall will remain shut down and authorities asked citizens to stay far away for the sake of their own safety. and the downtown area of buildings have been boarded up again after a year of protests and a pandemic these views have become
9:10 am
a common sight for many washingtonians but businesses are suffering the businessman from last 8 months because we're in the commercial area and this is the commercial hub all the offices around us are close and the security has beeves of so much uganda and we're moving over delivery business but mostly all the roads are closed . a life behind fences and roadblocks those who live here can't wait until the new president is sworn in. correspondent when glynn crossed william not long to wait now are we likely to see the cause the militarization of downtown washington disappear once 5 miss one in. well more or less i think that's what we can expect the f.b.i. has said the threat extends to all at least thursday one day after the inauguration but of course those troops will dissipate they're coming from many states all around the country they can't be stationed there forever for
9:11 am
a number of logistical the 1st financial reasons but also let's remember a washington d.c. is a highly secure highly militarized place to begin with especially since 911 go through in terms of personnel and roadblocks and these kinds of things for security reasons and also the threat that said currently opposing facing joe biden and the inauguration does not go away in fact the southern. poverty center has said that under democratic administrations there's an uptick in so-called anti-government he's called patriot groups white supremacist groups so this kind of threat which has gone into high gear since the election and since donald trump. fermenting the idea that this election was stolen didn't start then and it's not going to end on inauguration day now outgoing president onil traumas pain keeping quite a low profile hasn't really been seen in public for awake now what has he been doing. that is
9:12 am
a good question and his spokespeople have said he's taking lots of phone calls doing lots of things staying very busy working for the american people from morning to evening but that's been very vague i think is planning expecting today to issue something like a 100 pardons and commutations or changes to people sentences who exactly is on that list isn't exactly clear there's been a lot of lobbying going on to get people's sentences changed or even thrown out what's notable is who's not on that list and there's been so far no talk of any of his close aides or his family or even himself getting a preemptive pardon so to speak which have culture constitutionally questionable anyway and many of his aides are saying if you issue these preemptive pardons it looks like it's admission of guilt so don't do it because you don't want to show that you're guilty of anything the other important thing is of course that to any pardon from the president only applies to federal law federal cases there are still many different courts federal state and local courts that kid that could rule
9:13 am
against people and bring people up on charges that a president has no power over so that's kind of what trumps doing these last few days as he will be sending himself off before biden becomes president which will be the 1st time in at least a century that the outgoing president is not with the incoming president leaving washington technically still as president on wednesday. thanks so much they have to . let's take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world police in guatemala have broken up a group of thousands of migrants from central america who are trying to reach the united states' offices used to towns and shields to force the migrants back towards the honduran border and my rents had camped out on a road overnight after authorities stopped them from continuing their journey north . kremlin critic oleksandr valley has called on russians to take to the streets in protest after being jailed for 30 days develop he was detained on his return to

and being forcefully sent back into bosnia croatian authorities deny the allegations currently there are nearly $9000.00 migrants estimated to be in bosnia many are from afghanistan pakistan or syria the un's migration agency says more than a 3rd living without any shelter at all many were left homeless when a camp in leaper was evacuated in december after bosnian authorities failed to prepare the camp for winter. the empty camp was light a set on fire the bosnian army has set up new tents but n.g.o.s say more permanent shelter is sorely needed marina strauss reports for the past 3 months this makeshift camp near boston us border with crazy has been home for a he'll suffer the on pakistanis share some shelter in the woods with 5 others. is rising up in that. but that will.

leaper refugee camp made headlines in recent weeks 1st it was cleared and burned down the migrants and refugees have now been moved into tents but many here say nobody should live like this in winter it's pictures like these but half attracted unwanted attention to how boston authorities have handled the situation but the region's prime minister says the e.u. and the bosnian government share the blame. so there are solutions for the migration situation in bosnia the highest officials in this country need to show political will to stop and regulate illegal migration into the country and to control how the money is spent. all of the people we spoke to here non want to stay in boston but rather to continue their journey into the e.u. for many the chances of being granted asylum in the u. are slim but that doesn't deter soffer who says going back to pakistan is not an

9:19 am
blame on the bosnian government saying they really have to do something to improve the situation the thing is there actually is a refugee shelter in the nearby town of the hearts that has been closed down just a couple of months ago it's not a luxury facility it's like go on old company but still it's better than what we're seeing it leave our camp and it was financed by the e.u. but there are many people protesting in front of this shelter and we went there and talked to these people in there say that problems with migrants in the past and that's why they don't want to this facility to be opened so that's why local authorities are refusing to reopen this shelters so things are a lot more complicated than what they seem at 1st sight and you've of course just returned from bosnia and spoken to a lot of the miners there what more can you tell us about these allegations of croatian police brutally sending migrants back at the border.
9:20 am
well all migrants and or a few cheese we talked to were half repeat like competed these allegations are not only them also to local authorities so this is happening for example right here suffer are the young pakistani man we saw in the report he said he tried 1015 times to cross the border and is tied he was beaten up by the police sometimes they took away his mobile phone that sometimes this money sometimes it's closed that's what he told us but he's not the only way the only one and they have been there have been numerous media reports on these issues and she owes has been collecting photos documenting these abuses the creation of storage fees are denying such claims but critics are saying this is a clear breach of international law and also if you regulate because everyone who arrives at the border of an e.u. country has to be granted the rights to at least apply for asylum w.
