w. . in the fight. for. what's . good for the future. you can make it. in terms. of. hi there thanks for joining me on this very sporty at this in of the 77 person sure i am michael and ask you can tell for my surroundings this is going to be a pretty special show. so here's what's coming up. we meet one of germany's best female fans and talk to pay off the project in case. we experience the possible football fans in south africa. and he will talk to one of gardner's biggest football star someone john. mccain.
6:31 pm
we called the shaw. sports love uses and. first it is becoming popular among young people in the country with many of them using words to improve their lives let's find out more in this report. and the best along mentor and also. in the las. so i was so willing to stand. fencing a sport that is still relatively unknown in kenya. and i roby is only practiced by about 75 fences but coach stephen o'connell is on a mission to ensure that this sport is recognized. fancy new comer.
6:32 pm
you know fencing is a new sport in kenya but now it's slowly becoming widespread and this makes me happy. you know but you can see from my trainees it does help them a lot and that's changed their lives and when we started with them they did not have shoes then but today they do have shoes going on a. run on which he and their behaviors have changed and they've become responsible in what responsible in 2012 stephen started offering his classes today fencing has gained more ground attracting people from all age groups who want to learn more about the sport. one of them is ashley one gary she is one of 20 female friends of the 21 year old started fencing a year ago but she's already making huge strides. oh well i had
6:33 pm
a. chance to. ashley's family was skeptical at 1st her mother could not believe it and because of the weapon was afraid that her daughter would become a thief. but in the meantime they have understood it and support ashley and her support of your grammy. actually not trains 5 days a week and the hard work pays off she recently won a scholarship to study in south africa. i grow up i want to become a coach which was this. was a compromise so many kids are going to. find. your roommate.
6:34 pm
all over. there one. before you know how to turn this change. and i can. do the most fun thing in kenya stephen and i come in coaches like ashley are committed to establishing clubs around the country and inspiring the next generation of kenyan fences. i'm sure your seat at the school you saw is the brainchild of. a german. who has warned several international awards thank you for joining me on this it's hi thanks for having me so my 1st question is why did did you decide to introduce
6:35 pm
this project well fencing is my sport i really love it and also my father is from kenya so it was a no brainer to come to kenya to bring him to show it to everyone. in the school that the young chaps you see how do you get. people well those were personal donations and. donations so whenever i fly to kenya i bring something with my mom goes to bring something and talked with young people in the school you get a sense that there's talent and talent absolutely i've seen so much talent already . we have the 1st guys already assisting the coach helping we have 1st 2 alumni from school in south africa training school for coaches so i see a lot of talent. i mean i imagine dealing with so many young people from different backgrounds be quite challenging and get interested and new sport can be quite
6:36 pm
challenging what are some of the challenges conditions some of them with us i think the biggest challenge was actually bringing the kids and they quickly and to get there like giving them the possibility because so far everyone was really excited to have like this new project to be able to try a new sport and this new adventure because as you said it's a very very new sport in kenya but people were they were just really excited and happy to try it and do you see that there is a future for this sport absolutely i see a big future i mean what we've established so far in those few years since last year we are part of the world fencing federation so now the guys can actually go to competitions and then go abroad as i said the 1st 2 alumni from their training academy that is just so exciting and we have a disabled program as well so the sky is the limit i really want to go in all directions and make it as big as i know it from germany for example how far is that dream go on as well so far we're only in nairobi we're really one and wanted to
6:37 pm
have like a stable program in nairobi a big one and then from there go to the other counties my home state is actually from new york. so i would be really happy to see a club in q soon. and the north and the south of course too so we should expect very soon there's going to be a fence and i hope so. absolutely if i can help with that i would be so proud yeah no you are not following the conversation. simply put she can stop you and get awarded for it now i've seen the girls in kenya and i feel like this is something that i can do easily so i'm going to get into my friends but while i do that. history make up. a lot it's a ugandan kick boxer who is
6:38 pm
a world champion has his story. with 13 titles to him named patricia is the reigning world kick boxing champion in the female lightweight division. a lot of courage to stand up it takes a lot of courage to have to make it to the top i mean even when you make it to the top some people still doubt but if you listen to the voices of other people than listening to yourself you find out you block out your so from what really you want to be. true i'll take area she has faced negativity in discrimination in uganda kick boxing is considered immense on the sport so patricia's rise to the top was an uphill struggle. people are not going to and that's what i want to change. just to be one or you just want to. i just superchunk your wife because when i was
6:39 pm
a young that i had a lot of truth bedrooms don't come usually. so i reached a point whereby i said i have followed enough i could back turning me but what do i have to tell myself the 2 time world champion isn't just a tough opponent in the ring she also supports female athletes who have suffered sexual harassment and violence apple lodge has a very clear message for the perpetrators people are mentally sick because you have something to show to the wild but someone is actually limiting you want to go one of the girls were crying about sexual harassment a lot of them but it's never occurred to me because once i showed them what i wanted. no one even thought about coming. from my school days to hell out of today patricia upload knows that you can't just let him speak for
6:40 pm
themselves in your home village in goa the 29 year old founded a club for mostly young female key talks she believes that hope for a future starts with the young generation specially leaders also work to us creating a safe environment to further develop their talents we can do this we can achieve it we are greater than we are actually we at the beginning of every. this year she is focused on defending your world title she is convinced that he achievements inspire more african girls to stay focused on their dreams. i was torn between friends and kickboxing but look at me today i'm a pro friend about to spar with. alex now before we start do i get an advantage for being shorter than you are absolutely not in fencing we don't make a difference between heights we don't make a difference between. the weights as you know and maybe from judo.
6:41 pm
we all are in the same category as long as you pick one weapon out of the 3 like this. you have no advantages ok now break it down for me what exactly is fencing so for me fencing is a lot of creativity it's also moving while you have to strategize and you have to adapt to different circumstances because i have a strategy you have a strategy and when you change your mind i also have to adapt to that and i mean of all the things that you could do sport football basketball why do you decide trying to stab your pawn and was the thing that you wanted to do it just gave me a lot of fun and i just really like to be good life starving people you know i like to move i like to strap. gys i like the interaction with the opponent because i also used to do swimming and running for example and there you fight against the clock but here you really fight against the opponent and you you get to see if your
6:42 pm
strategy was better than theirs and how long have you been a sport i started when i was 21 which was like saying the names so now i've been in the sport for roughly 12 years ok now there's been a lot of discussion lately in sports around the world talking about greece's in the sports offense in germany and also us a block what has been your experience like well luckily i didn't have many experiences with racism in my life in general the few that i had where very unpleasant obviously i had one big one also in fencing but i reported it and got handled so yeah i dealt with it that way many people like you in germany who are into sports well right now i am the only person of color in the national team which is a team of 24 we have a few in the junior team and i'm just hoping that my legacy what i do
6:43 pm
in the sport will help to change that a little bit because i think that anyone can do fencing and you just need role models to need representation and see yourself in and to to achieve you know it's i think it's important that you you mention your legacy talk to us about what is being your legacy so far i know you've won a number of awards but what exactly is your legacy so i've won 2 medals at european championships so far right now i'm training for the tokyo olympic games hoping to qualify go there and maybe win a medal and i think that actually my project in kenya is also a big part of my legacy because that one will go on long after i finished my active career and that's why i'm really. proud and happy that at this happening and when you hope to finish active korea but i'm also planning to go to the paris olympic games which will be 2024 solid that's for sure i will train for those for lympics
6:44 pm
and then we'll see as a cop for when you can be active in the sport. fencing is pretty has a pretty wide range so we had a limb pick a vice champion actually in rio de janeiro was 42 but then the picture was 21 so you can see you can really go on for a long time so now look at me here where what it takes to be the next world champion absolutely if you have a lot of time we will make it happen ok now i am going to get him see for the next championship yes i can be the next world champion but probably you don't know what sport you are into at the moment so here is a selection of some of the best sports across africa who knows you might get inspired in the meantime we'll be fencing with alex.

several training programs camps and scholarships have sprung up to scout for young talent not only in football buzzing different sports for example in 2013 the n.b.a. launched its junior m.b.a. program in a blue john and share nigeria has produced nearly 20 n.b.a. players more than any other african country many people are beginning to take making a living from professional sports most seriously. young people try hard to following the footsteps of their ideas the 2 you got an olympic gold medalist join our club on stupid to protect our adored by the achievements are often overshadowed by very sad stories in local sports in number of former ugandan sportsmen live in abject poverty some cannot afford the basics of life however many talented young ugandans wants to be aiming at the big goal with the hope that if one can bring

a gold medal home others can too. hard. after a grueling 90 seconds with alex i realize that isn't as easy a sight. thought so maybe football yeah could be my calling in south africa many other steps like me have the dream of becoming the next football star but i like me actually pursuing dreams and this report we had to so where to where football has become the path to glory. johannesburg it's much day in orlando pirates' supporters are filling up the clubhouse the pirates and one of the oldest clubs in africa but have been left without a trophy for years but real fans do not pledge their loyalty to success. it's not just. winning them higher than what is on the cards.
6:48 pm
but the tide is about to turn the tide it's played a phenomenal season and the fans are upbeat about today's match against their arch rivals the kaiser chiefs. some chiefs supporters even came to watch the game with the pirates both clubs course away to their home and the fans respect each other for the you know one thing. that's what a. lot of these he means literally while the father who for the chiefs his daughter is a team player supporter. of the winning formula of the team is the new coach. here at the training base of the rand study i'm enjoying his blog the former bliss leader coach introduced a rigorous training regime with intensive technical and individual training to believe that there is more to be unlocked. the potential here is enormous i think not only in south africa but africa in general the players physically strong but
6:49 pm
also in terms of behavior and reactions on the field they are good different solutions it's unbelievable if they were training even earlier i think they would have more success in football games. simbo i just have the diet of the players and started video recordings of the training sessions to analyze potential weaknesses at the same time in kind of a mindset shift by the wedding template and discouraging solo runs. the new strategy certainly pays off after 6 years with the trophies the pirates want to empty in 8 cup in december last a competition featuring the top 8 clubs in south africa. midfielder linda is certain that the new team spirit will carry the club or. anybody's children together pulling in one direction you know went into will we have been and p. to flow for the last time and want to keep it that way throughout the season it's
6:50 pm
been a while that the team isn't one in the solicitor we're looking for to win this on not only for ourselves but all families and the fans that isis is putting sick after the training coached in by our calls for us try to get meeting with the players strictly no media. but at the clubhouse the atmosphere is tense until the 58th minute when the pirates run a counter attack overwhelming the defense getting their fans pleading for future titles was. the man question we know what we're not for. now we want to call what a kid wants to take everything. including a cap on. the pirates wean and the despair of the case the chief supporters is soon forgotten in the end everybody celebrates as one
