10:31 am
and he will talk to one of the biggest football stars. same day came. when he called the shaw was a sports love uses and non-conventional with ferguson is becoming popular among young people in the country with many of them using it. let's find out more in this report. the best long winter and also. a lot. so i was so willing to. fencing a sport that is still relatively unknown in kenya. nairobi is only practiced by about 75 fences but coach stephen o'connell. it's on
10:32 am
a mission to ensure that this sport is recognized. fencing come. fencing is a new sport in kenya but now it's slowly becoming widespread and this makes me have to. be more sadia you know but you can see from my trainees it does help them a lot and that's changed their lives and when we started with them they did not have shoes then but today they do have shoes then on a year to. run on may change a key key and their behaviors have changed we do and they've become responsible in what we're responsible. in 2012 steven started offering his classes today fencing has gained more ground attracting people from all age groups who want to learn more about the sport. one of them is actually one gary she is one of 20 female fences the 21 year old started fencing a year ago but she's already making huge strides. see.
10:33 am
when they realize oh when i had a. chance to. win yes. it is like. everyone. actually family was skeptical at 1st a mother could not believe it and because of the weapon was afraid that her daughter would become a thief but in the meantime they have understood it and support ashley in her sport and you don't need. ashley not trains 5 days a week and the hard work pays off she recently won a scholarship to study in south africa. after all i want to become
10:34 am
a coach which proves. so many kids are getting. if. you're. all over. before you know how to turn this. kind of. thing in kenya steve and i come in coaches like ashley are committed to establishing more clubs around the come. and firing the next generation of kenyan fences. i'm sure your seat at the school you saw is the brainchild of. german 1st and who was warned several international awards thank you for joining me on
10:35 am
this one so invest in mom it's ok thanks for having me so i 1st question is why did you decide to introduce this project in kenya well fencing is my sport i really love it and also my father is from kenya so it was a no brainer to come to kenya to bring him to show it to everyone and i've seen a lot of good in this school that the young chaps used in that how do you get over to the people well those were personal donations and. donations so whenever i fly to kenya i bring something when my mom goes to bring something and when we interact with young people in the school you get a sense that there's talent 1st and talent absolutely i've seen so much talent already we have the 1st guys already assisting the coach helping we have 1st to alumni from school in south africa training school for coaches so i see a lot of talent. i mean i imagine dealing with so many young people from different
10:36 am
backgrounds can be quite challenging and interested and new sport can be quite a challenge and what are some of the challenges can you share some of them with us i think the biggest challenge was actually bringing the kids and the equipment together like giving them the possibility because so far everyone was really excited to have like this new project to be able to try a new sport and this new adventure because as you said it's a very very new sport in kenya but people were they were just really excited and happy to try it and do you see that there's a. future for this sport absolutely i see a big future i mean what we've established so far in those few years since last year we were part of the world fencing federation so now the guys can actually go to competitions and and go abroad as i said the 1st 2 alumni from that training academy that is just so exciting and we have a disabled program as well so this guy is the limit i really want to go in all
10:37 am
directions and make it as big as i know it from germany for example how far is that dream go on as well so far we are only in nairobi and we are really one and wanted to have like a stable program in there ropey a big one and then from there go to the other counties my home state is actually from the. south be really happy to see a club in soon. the north and the south of course too so we should expect very soon there's going to be the fence and i hope so. absolutely if i can help with that i would be so proud now in case you fall into conversation. simply put she can stop you and get awarded for it now i've seen the girls in kenya and i feel like this is something that i can do easily so i'm going to get into my fence india but while i do that. history make up.

a lot is a ugandan kickboxer who is a world champion has her story. with 13 titles to him named patricia is the reigning world kick boxing champion in the female lightweight division. a lot of courage to stand up it takes a lot of courage to have to make it to the top i mean even when you make it to the top some people still doubt but if you listen to the voices of other people than listening to yourself you find out you block yourself from what really you want to be. true i'll take care here she has faced negativity didn't discriminate in uganda kick boxing is considered immense on the sport so patricia's rise to the top was an uphill struggle. before i'm not going to and that's what i want to change. you to be one or you just want
10:39 am
to. give your child your fly because when i was a young that i had a lot of bedrooms don't come easily. so i reached a point whereby i said i have followed enough but get back turning me back what do i have to tell myself the 2 time world champion isn't just a tough opening in the ring she also supports female athletes who have suffered sexual harassment and violence. very clear message for the paper treating people are mentally sick because you have something to show to the world but someone is actually limiting access to reach where you want to go one of the girls were crying about sexual harassment a lot of them but it's never occurred to me because once i showed them what i wanted. no one even ever thought about coming that. for me my school days
10:40 am
hell out of today patricia knows that you can't just speak for themselves in your home village in goa the 29 year old founded it club for mostly young female keep boxes she believes that hope for a better future starts with the young generation is specially leaders also work to us creating a safe environment to further develop their talents. we added beginning every. this year she is focused on defending her world title she is convinced that he achievements inspire more african girls to stay focused on their dreams. growing up i was torn between friends and kickboxing but look at me today i'm a pro friends about to spar with. alex now before we start do i get an advantage for being shorter than you are absolutely not in fencing we don't make
10:41 am
a difference between heights we don't make a difference between. the weights as you know it may be from judo or take one dog we all are in the same category as long as you pick one weapon out of the 3 like this. you have no advantages ok now break it down for me what exactly is fencing so for me fencing is a lot of creativity it's also moving while you have to strategize and you have to adapt to different circumstances because i have a strategy you have a strategy and when you change your mind i also have to adapt to that and i mean of all the things that you could do sport football basketball why do you decide trying to stop your porn and was the thing that you wanted to do it just gave me a lot of fun and just really like to be gay lifestyle been people i like to move i like to strap. gys i like the interaction with the opponent because i also used to
10:42 am
do swimming and running for example and there you fight against the clock but here you really fight against the opponent and you will you get to see if your strategy was better than theirs and how long have you been to sport i started when i was 21 which was like insanely lame said so i've been in the sport for roughly 12 years ok now there's been a lot of discussion lately in sports around the world talking about racism in sports. in germany and also us a block what has been your experience like well luckily i didn't have many experiences with racism in my life in general the few that i had where very unpleasant obviously i had one big one also in fencing but i reported it and got handled so yeah i dealt with it that way many people like you in germany who are into sport well right now i am the only person of color in the national team which is a team of 24 we have
10:43 am
a few in the junior team and i'm just hoping that my legacy what i do in this board will help to change that a little bit because i think that anyone can do fencing and you just need role models you need representation and see yourself going into 2 to achieve it yeah it's i think it's important that you mention your legacy talk to us about what is being your legacy so far i know you want to number of awards but what exactly is your legacy so i've won 2 medals at the european championships so far right now i'm training for the tokyo olympic games hoping to qualify to go there and maybe win a medal and i think that actually my project in kenya is also a big part of my legacy because that one will go on long after i finished my active career and that's why i'm really. proud and happy that it is happening and when you hope to finish active korea but i'm also planning to go to the paris olympic games
10:44 am
which will be 2024 solid that's for sure i will train for those for lympics and then we'll see as each cup for when you can be active in the sport. something is pretty has a pretty wide range so we had a limb pick a vice champion actually in rio de janeiro was 42 but then the picture was 21 so you can see you can really go on for a long time ok so now. look at me here why how what it takes to be the next world champion absolutely if you have a lot of time we will make it happen ok now i am going to get for the next championship yes i can be the next world champion but probably you don't know what sport you are into at the moment so here is a selection of some of the best sports across africa who knows you might get inspired in the meantime i will be fencing with alex.

it's not just our damage or winning them higher than what is on the cards. but the tide is about to turn the tide it's played a phenomenal season and the fans are upbeat about today's march against the arch rivals the kaiser chiefs. some chiefs supporters even came to watch the game with the pirates both clubs course away to their home and the fans respect each other for the you know one thing. that's wonderful. for the. piece he means literally while the father who for the chiefs his daughter is a team player supporter. part of the winning formula of the team is the new coach. here at the training base and the rand study i'm enjoying his blog the former bliss leader coach introduced a rigorous training regime with intensive technical and individual training believes that there is more to be unlocked enormous the potential here is enormous

i think not only in south africa but africa in general the player sufi's equally strong but also in terms of behavior and reactions on the field the good different solutions. it's unbelievable if they were training even earlier i think they would have more success in football. and just in the diet of the players and started video recordings of the training sessions to analyze potential weaknesses and the same time in kind of a mindset shift by the wedding template and discouraging solo runs. the new strategy certainly pays off after 6 years without trophies the pirates won the empty 8 cup in december a competition featuring the top 8 clubs in south africa. the midfielder linda is certain that the new team spirit will carry the club for. anybody's children together with pulling in one direction you know went into will
