after staff may day by checking all those jobs finding out what people are talking about and then. my father taught me how to ask and confront the book questions about my country and about to board that is what i keep doing to state my name and i work at g.w. . it has now been exactly one year since the 1st person here in germany tested positive for the corona virus on january 27th 2020 practically no one expected what was about to begin unfolding here and all over the planet more than 100000000 people have been infected more than 2000000 have died in the numbers will get worse before they get better tonight the unprecedented attempt to vaccinate everyone on
9:31 pm
the planet science has given us vaccines will the politics of us versus them get in the way i'm burned off in berlin this is the day. hundreds. more doses of pfizer and 100000000 more explosives in the dirt some countries. quiet up to 4 times what. creases the total actually. been used to display 50 percent of bucks in nationalism might said short term political goals we are all is not saying if some countries. today to get these other countries. and of the nations own interests just up for us which is. also coming up in germany handled the
9:32 pm
1st wave of the pandemic better than most countries the 2nd wave change that tonight the virus the learning curve and a good dose of humility. where else would you rather be none of our neighbors has been able to get these pandemic under control 3 mold lenient measures where would you rather be than in the federal republic of germany. or to our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states and to our viewers a little round the world welcome. we begin the day in the darkest moment of the pandemic this week the world reached and surpassed a tragic number 100000000 people have now been infected with the coronavirus and most of those infections have happened in the last few months in fact january looks set to be the worst month so far for new infections and 19 deaths scientists expect the figures to get worse next month with more people hospitalized and more people
9:33 pm
die how quickly things get better will depend significantly on what we do with the coronavirus vaccines thanks to science the world now has numerous effective vaccines with even more in the pipeline getting the vaccines from the lab into people's arms is now a question of logistics but also a matter of the hands and have nots this week the world health organization warned that the divide between rich and poor nations is worsening by the day as we speak rich countries are owning out vaccines while the woods least developed countries watch and wait with every day that passes the divide grows larger between the wolves haves and have nots bucks in nationalism might said short term political goals but it's in every nation's own interest to
9:34 pm
stop quote equity i leave you with a challenge i said at the beginning of the week together. we must ensure that vaccination of held workers and all of that of people is underway in all countries within the 1st 100 days of this year. oh and for more now we want to bring in bruce word he's senior advisor to w.h.o. director general tendency you just heard there he's also heading efforts to speed up vaccine distribution is going to have you on the day so we're talking about the haves and the have nots when it comes to vaccines and you are working you're trying to make these vaccines equitable everywhere i mean you must have one of the hardest jobs on the planet at the moment. well there's an awful lot of people sharing this load actually right now so it's it's it's not just may but it is
9:35 pm
a massive challenge but there's a lot of people working very hard right now to try and right this situation as quickly as possible the u.s. president is promising to have almost everyone in the u.s. vaccinated by the end of the summer south africa's president is accusing rich countries of hoarding back scenes for their own citizens what's the truth here. well even if we knew the facts right vaccination these vaccines were available proven the 1st ones licensed at the beginning of december and since then we're now at a point where $59.00 countries almost 60 countries have begun vaccination only one of those countries is a low income country so the rest of them the vast majority are high income countries a couple of or a few upper middle income countries and then very very few at the other end and at the beginning it was understood because of the contractual arrangements but now we have 71000000 doses are right you know delivered around the world and of those
9:36 pm
doses 25 of the 70000025 have gone to people who live in the lowest income countries so that's a situation that we have to rectify very very quickly there's a number of reasons for that which we'll talk about but the big thing is we need to change that that that that distribution pattern very quickly and i want to ask you about that in just a moment let me just ask you last night when president biden promised 300000000 americans will be vaccinated by the end of the summer things 2 more purchases of vaccines that sounded like an american or america 1st approach does it does it worry you. well this is not an american fro 1st approach this is every country is taking the same approach that's the challenge where every country and of course elected politicians ever responsibility to take care of their own people so most countries or many countries are approaching the use of corona virus vaccines the
9:37 pm
same way the reality is though and it's interesting just the study came out just the other day that that that just highlighted once again that it is in not only the health interests of morris' interest but also the health security and now the economic interests of every single country trying to do this in a coordinated manner they world is so interconnected right now no country can get out of this situation this pandemic acting on its own 'd so the situation is not about one country 1st or another country 1st it's about every country deciding we need all of them to move together and that means a combination of not just assuring we finance the mechanisms that need to get the vaccines out on a global scale but that also we provide to spaces in the queue so to speak to make sure that everyone gets at least some share of those initial doses you know the worst possible outcome is all doses go to some countries solution is. all countries
9:38 pm
get some of the dose. and that brings me to kovacs which was set up to ensure poor countries also have access to the vaccines we know that the w.h.o. is part of kovacs what is the biggest challenge or the biggest problem right now the inability of poor countries to afford the vaccines or the shortage of vaccines . well if we go back to the reason that kovacs was set up remember this was set up nearly a year ago now or we began to roll it out at a time when no vaccines when we didn't know whether vaccines were going to be successful we didn't know which vaccines of the you know the myriad vaccines that were being tested were actually going to be successful and in a situation like that the best thing for the global community was to pool resources pool the risk of development tool the procurement of these products and pool the roll out of them coordinate the rollout and that was in everyone's best interest and that was well recognized by months ago so the intent of kovacs was not to
9:39 pm
provide doses for the lowest income countries it was to coordinate a global rollout of doses now where we are today many hiring come countries in addition to signing up to be part of that global effort they also made by lateral deals with manufacturers and sometimes for it for vaccines that like them during the vaccines that were extremely expensive or the pfizer vaccine that of course is effective only if kept at it ultra cold say minus 70 degrees and some of those products are best suited to low income countries so initially there was a sense that well maybe we can rely on other products but the reality is it's been these m r n a products that are that name the world right now and so without access to that group of products there is a delay in getting out to the low income countries so it's a good part of it is financing but part of it is also access to the only vaccines that are currently internationally recognized and approved and all of those
9:40 pm
contracts on those are held by high income countries so it's as simple as that i'm sure you're aware it's in the vast as in a confines or they've angered the european union by cutting the amount of vaccine doses that they're delivering your boss says that kovacs expects 150000000 doses of astra zeneca as vaccine to become available for distribution for the 1st quarter of this year is that still realistic or is that wishful thinking now. no the at that's absolutely possible remember the big challenge with the astra zeneca product right now is it actually hasn't gone through the final regulatory processes that are necessary to roll this out on a big scale so if we look at the kovacs facility we're going to be drawing on astra zeneca supplies from 2 of the different production facilities around the world nice facilities are being and the products are being assessed right now and what we're looking forward to is these things passing regulatory approval by mid february and then starting to roll out very very soon thereafter and we've contracted 150000000
9:41 pm
doses are from sites that are not supplying your so it should not be affected by the challenges that are being faced by the sites that are currently planned to serve europe remember the astra zeneca vaccine is not yet been approved for use in one in may and that your work on it with your that's correct bruce and a lot of people are wishing you lots of success word senior advisor to the director general of the w h we appreciate your time in your insights tonight thank you. thank you very much. one year ago today germany reported its 1st corona virus infection today more than 13200 new cases were reported a slight drop compared to the same day last week but it shows you the dramatic development in the pandemics 1st year germany's disease control agency says that daily infection numbers are steadily decreasing but the situation remains serious
9:42 pm
outbreaks are still being reported across the country particularly in nursing and care homes and the death rate remains very high with more than 982 deaths reported in figures released on wednesday morning. physical distancing medical mask wearing and a social life that largely been consigned to the virtual world that pretty much describes everyone's wife everyone's reality at the moment when the 1st coronavirus case was detected last year very few had any idea that a new normal was about to emerge and change everything here's a look back at how the pandemic unfolded here in germany. jeremy 1st came across 1000 here at the offices of this automotive supplier in bavaria it's where 33 year old employee caught the novel virus from a coworker who had traveled to germany from china he became patient number one.
9:43 pm
german officials were quick to assure the public the country was taking the virus seriously but that there was also no cause for alarm. health minister young bond told the public there's no need for exaggerated concern then for. get this kind in orange the world health organization echoed this with calls for simple measures like more hand washing self protection is still the best possible way we can go about this but infections spread to every region in germany contact tracing became impossible. germany's hold on the virus gave way to the free spread of covert 19 and. then just 6 weeks after the 1st case was discovered in germany announced the closing of schools by the end of march a nationwide lockdown meant the workplace and the school day had to compete for
9:44 pm
attention in homes across the country. the bulk of people in germany seemed to take the restrictions in stride and agree with them with the budding spring germany slowly started opening up again. but by the start of me nearly 7000 people in germany had died. meanwhile elsewhere in europe the numbers range from more than 24000 to over 28000 deaths. in comparison with many european neighbors germany appeared to have weathered the height of the crisis fairly well. many people enjoyed the warm summer months. but then fall arrived and cases began to rise again. by november a so-called lockdown light was in place despite both calls for stricter measures.
9:45 pm
as well as protests against them. but the mini lockdown didn't work cases rose at alarming rates with more and more patients needing intensive care. by the christmas holidays restrictions have been tightened again and after the new year schools and shops remain shut. the latest extension of germany's lockdown will continue through february 14th. looking back on a year of code 19 here in germany let's bring in our political correspondent on strong good evening to you let's start with one aspect of germany's response when it became clear that coded had arrived here in europe that was the decision to close the borders and to ban the export of protective gear what have we learned from that experience. well that was a knee jerk nationalistic reaction but here in germany and in other countries in
9:46 pm
europe and in fact it turned out to be it is all started with a bogus close the supply chains were broken factories were stopped supplies to shops was stopped. the disputes of all the way to get protective equipment went around the world. a lot of money was made by people who were producing low quality goods protective equipment and saw this and learned from it was that this should not happen again and the german government in fact has been trying very hard since then to coordinate much of its measures much of the cross border measures within the european union within the continent of europe for instance the acquisition of fact scenes that we've all been talking about it all has been coordinated on a european level so that this kind of nationalist is going i love cannot happen again germany its response in the 1st wave of the pandemic was pre still around the world that has been the case in the 2nd wave what's happened. well basically what's
9:47 pm
happened is that people were to relax after the 1st wave it was some people went away on holiday the schools were closed that area of possible infection was eliminated many of the businesses were slightly less active than they would be because of the sum of time and the government neglected to prepare for a 2nd wave properly for instance in taking precautions that care. in preparing schools for the 2nd wave and preparing public health systems for the 2nd wave everyone was relaxed everyone in a sense thought that this was already overcome and so the 2nd wave hits germany very hard as it did in other countries have it lessons learned from bad will take a lot longer actually to correct and hunt how has the public acceptance of the government's response how is that changed. well in fact one can say that public
9:48 pm
exceptions and acceptance of harsh measures of locked on the just has consistently been high in germany is consistent if you are on 3 quarters of a full 5th of the population if you believe the polls but if you look at the actual infection figures you must say that there must be many people who say that they accept these measures but don't actually stick to them otherwise the infection rates wouldn't have risen at the rate that they have i want to take a listen to chancellor merkel she was speaking back in the summer about the challenge posed by the pandemic take a listen but also listen to what you're hearing jamie as well now the months since february and march have marked a radical cut everyone has experienced changes in private moment in that family life and in the way we live together in a democracy is the virus is an affront to democracy you know hundreds germany's political system seems to be rather resilient and is holding up quite well.
9:49 pm
well you can say that this was an organist that i will say it the 2nd wave radio and it started hitting at a good beginning of september us. what's been happening here in trying to control the outbreaks of the virus we have had a kind of coordinating committee consisting of angle americal the chancellor and the 16 leaders of various of germany's 16 regional states and this has been a very very difficult relationship i'm going to america has pushed all of us all the time in the last few months for harsher measures to be taken but the regions have said that they do not agree with that and many times have done what they felt right which is not really contributed to controlling the virus and they have also been groups in germany who have said that measures to control the virus are. in this sense contravene of the constitution should be stopped that new even people that deny that the virus exists and of course as time goes on this is become
9:50 pm
a part of political matter as well so the opposition parties are putting a lot of pressure on the german government with the elections coming in germany that's going to be general elections in september and various other regional elections before that it's becoming much more political the whole issue here in germany where the political correspondent once branch with the leaders tonight here in berlin thank you. during the 4 years of the trauma presidency millions of americans have become followers of the right wing conspiracy theory known as q anon followers believe that a great awakening in the us and around the world was about to happen they scoured anonymous web postings from a shadow week you figure and interpreted tweets and statements by former u.s. president donald trump as messages sent from their champion they expected some kind of epiphany to occur on inauguration day but there was no epiphany became president
9:51 pm
trump left the white house and chewing on followers are facing a harsh reality check. well my colleague does if he has been following this story for years i mean remind us what exactly is q is there any way to know how many people are still followers look you anon is a movement based on a conspiracy theory that's based on trump so trump presidency was at the center of this they believe that he was going to save them from a cabal of satan worshipping pedophiles in the u.s. government mostly among democrats and also high profile hollywood celebrities they believe a lot of tropes that come from old semitic conspiracy theories and they believe that trump was going to save them all from this now as turned in terms of how many people actually follow this movement it's really hard because it's all online or most of it's online anyway some estimates by facebook and independent estimates by the guardian have put that number around 3000000 people who have accounts that are associated with q.
9:52 pm
anon accounts and they're all following this one person who posts under the name of q so none of this is based on evidence i have to say that maybe maybe for some people out there listening in but it's based on just these anonymous postings online so it's really hard to tell how many people are active but just in my travels across us i would say 3000000 is a huge underestimate because if you just talk to people at trump rallies they might not say i'm a follower of anonymous but they say they're doing the right thing or i believe that there is this cabal of child sex track. we know that a key belief of cumin on followers is that double troll remains u.s. president so obviously he's no longer in power what's going to happen to the movement well it's been a reckoning for the movement inauguration day when joe biden became the president of the united states and trump had to leave to florida that was an existential crisis for the movement now we were looking on chat rooms where a lot of q.
9:53 pm
and a on a missed cue anon followers talk about what to do next and you can see that there are several main things you had people who are continuing to. test as we saw there were just going on as if nothing happened there's people who have left the movement to have said ok this is all fake i've wasted my time and then there's you know there's also people who have tried to incorporate biden's presidency into a new narrative you know what you have to for what you can forget is that trump is still alive is still out there so he can still play a role in in organizing this somehow or at least being a symbolic figure in this now we talked to. the head of the podcast the host podcast the cuban people are basically faced with a kind of double down or back down position what happens in those cases historically is more radicalization among the people that remain and more i suppose violent outbursts but what's always been a risk if q.
9:54 pm
and on is the most mentally ill within the system they're like kernels of popcorn that go off before inches of the movement and they harm themselves and usually the people that they love around them their family structures their friends structures and that's what we're going to be seeing very soon i believe because of the cognitive dissonance created by this great disappointment you know kernels of popcorn going off i mean we've been know that germany is home to a fringe a major fringe of q anon outside of the u.s. what do we know about that and what do we know about the role of donald trump in in this friend that's a really good question don from being the former president of the u.s. what does that mean for the rest of the world no like you said there germany is considered to be the home of the largest base of cuban on followers outside of the english speaking world as telegram channels there is online chat rooms where a lot of germans are also communicating about this false conspiracy theory and some
9:55 pm
people have put the estimate around $150000.00 followers of the movement within germany which is pretty significant now trump does play a major role in this you'll see you this. these trademark red maga hats at a lot of rallies here especially around the pandemic pandemic has been a big issue for germans a lot of conspiracy theories not believing that kobe had 19 exist and because trump early on had also cast doubt on how serious it was they took that as a sign that he was that he was going to do something for them so you saw a lot of that playing out here and like i said it's going to continue to play a role as long as trump is still around and written statement despite all of the cognitive dissonance that he was talking about i mean thank you. well the day is almost done but the conversation it continues online you'll find us on twitter either at the w. news or you can follow me at brant t.v. and remember whatever happens between now and then tomorrow is another day we'll see you then everybody.

even respect. this is. the new u.s. president says america is taking the lead in the fight against climate change president biden has signed executive orders aimed at reducing rising global temperatures will host a global climate summit in april saying that the u.s. cannot meet the challenge on its own also coming up show me the vaccines the european union increasing its pressure on astra zeneca the e.u.
10:01 pm
is demanding. scenes made in 2 of astra zeneca his british factories must be shared with europe and on this international holocaust remembrance day the world is called on to remember and to never forget the 6000000 jews and millions of others who perished under the nazis. it's good to have you with us it is an about face in the u.s. his position on climate change today u.s. president joe biden said america must lead the global response to the climate crisis by made the remarks at the white house before signing a raft of executive orders aimed at curbing rising global temperatures the orders establish climate change as a major national security and foreign policy issue for the u.s. . biden said the climate crisis requires
10:02 pm
a national effort likening the threat to the corona virus pandemic just like we need a unified national response to cope with 19 we desperately need a unified national response to the climate crisis because there is a climate crisis we must keep we must lead global response because neither challenge can be met as secretary kerry's pointed out many times by the united states alone we know what to do we've just got to do our this poll in our washington bureau chief she's following the story for us could even say you know as well what a big change there president biden saying that the u.s. must leave the world's response in fighting climate change and that is something very different from what we used to hear from the white house it is indeed friend i mean it's a major steps that the administration is accepting climate's and are telling the public that it is real we have to keep in mind donald trump just ignite climate
10:03 pm
change so president biden used the opportunity today to talk a ban again about the importance of multilateral agreements and he made it clear that the u.s. is willing to take the responsibility to lead in the global fight off the climate crisis so what we know is what is inside president biden's climate plan. it's a very very important topic for him the 1st day he was in office he made a pledge to rejoin the paris climate agreement already and cancelled the construction of the keystone pipeline for our international audience brand this is something the u.s. has been fighting over for many many years the white house has made ambitious plans to move toward investing in clean energy project and just 2 days biden has signed
10:04 pm
an executive order to halt you all gas leases on federal lands that's also a huge huge and very controversial topic here in the united states a controversy of course these decisions can make you friends or they can make you enemies how does the rest of the country feel about biden's plans. well we have to keep in mind that there are still many many communities in this country that depend on the oil and gas and coal economy so many americans are actually really worried about his plans they're worried that they're losing their jobs and in his actually pretty emotional speech i have to say joe biden addressed those fears and promised to bring bag green jobs and friend this summer i mean the whole world watched california burned to the grounds because of wildfires caused by climate change we've reported intensively about that and i actually was there myself and these
10:05 pm
images were almost. they did change the mind of many many americans even of those who did not believe in climate change before these wildfires rightly remember the images very we'll just call in washington tonight thank you. our let's have a look now at some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world moscow police have raided properties lean to jailed opposition leader alexina of all the and they've arrested his brother authorities searched the headquarters of the vallies anti-corruption foundation as well as his family apartment it comes after tens of thousands rallied to cross russia on sunday to demand of all these released from prison russia's upper and lower houses of parliament have ratified the extension of the last remaining nuclear arms control pact with the united states the lower house of the state duma voted unanimously to extend the new start treaty for 5 years the vote came a day after u.s.
10:06 pm
president joe biden and russian president vladimir putin reached a deal. large crowds have been out in the polish capital warsaw and other cities to protest an almost total ban on abortions which came in effect into effect today the ruling by the country's top court means that abortions are now only legal in poland in cases of rape incest or when the mother's health is in danger. the european union has told the drug maker astra zeneca that it must supply the e.u. with more doses of its code 19 backseat brussels has publicly expressed its frustration and for the company announced delivery delays blamed on lower than expected production at the company's e.u. based factories the company responded to the e.u.'s demands by describing delivery dates in its contract with brussels as target dates rather than legally binding deadlines but the e.u.
10:07 pm
says the shortfall should be made up with doses produced at factories in the u.k. and astra zeneca says that once produce they are should go to britain because britain placed its orders 1st here's the e. hughes health commission and let me be crystal clear. the 27 european union member states are united that astra zeneca needs to deliver on its commitments in our agreements the logic of these agreements was as valid then this it is now we provided the risking investment up front in order to get a binding commitment from the company to pre-print to use even before it gets authorization not being able to ensure the manufacturing capacity is against the letter and the spirit of our agreement we need jet the logic of 1st come 1st said that may work at the neighborhood watches but not in contract no 1st come 1st
10:08 pm
served let's take the story now to our correspondent gave motss in brussels good evening to you georg so there's been a lot of claims counterclaims angry messaging going on today between both sides what's the latest round really hard to say because obviously this contract is confidential the e.u. now has. to put the contract in the contract into the public for everyone to see that there is a commitment as the you commission has set a legal commitment that those vaccines that have been promised that have been prepaid refinanced even much more than $300000000.00 euros to build up the capacities in those factories and now the commission says to point towards. best a best effort clause is just a lame excuse and there is no hierarchy of factories if there's a supply problem and everybody should suffer the consequences at least that is the
10:09 pm
argument that has been put forward by the european commission what do we know what pressure can the european union exert here. well the european union has already fired a warning shot and basically made clear to astra zeneca but also to other vaccine developers that are producing in europe that they now have to at least register how many doses they are exporting from europe and that is an indication that they do want to keep track on how much vaccine is being produced in europe and how much is leaving and i talked to one member of the european parliament who said that is just the 1st step the 2nd step could be an export ban but today the commissioner made clear other commissioner for health. has made clear that is not on the cards as yet we know that the asteroid is in a command scene it hasn't been approved for use in the european union yet that's
10:10 pm
expected later this week but there are questions now about its efficacy in older patients so what are we expecting to hear from the european medicines agency other data brand as we speak is still coming in through the european medical agency from astra zeneca the problem really here is that there is not a lot of data on elderly people the ratio of people who participated in the pretrial for this vaccine of over 70 year olds is is just 3 percent and so there is not a lot of data that the european medical agency can work with and that is why some have suspected that that might lead to a recommendation for younger people for that particular vaccine but we'll have to wait and see until friday that is when the approval is expected all right steve months with the latest tonight's in brussels thank you. well here's a look now at some of the other developments in the pandemic portugal will suspend

all flights to and from brazil beginning on friday that stew to the surge in 1000 cases in brazil the french drug makers and of says that it will join forces with its rival pfizer to help produce the buy on tech vaccine as its own bank scene is not yet ready for market and the con film festival has been moved from may to july in the hope of being able to hold the event on the french riviera and for the event not to be just virtual germany's parliament has marked international holocaust remembrance day commemorating the 6000000 jews and millions of others who perished under the nazis the day falls on the anniversary of the liberation of the nazi auschwitz concentration camp speakers at the ceremony today in the german buddhist tog warned against the resurgence of anti-semitism. a day of remembrance for the victims of the brutal nazi regime representatives of
