today was that m.p.'s were shed year old to sit for the 1st time in parliament since the national league for democracy of on sun city won a crushing overwhelming victory in general elections in november the pro-military parties were in those same elections were were humiliatingly defeated but since and those parties and the generals have been insisting that there was a letter for the parliament shouldn't sit today and all day were sort of dismissing this were pressing had so we would have had a parliament opening this morning just a few hours before that under the cover of darkness in the early hours the military moved in they staged raids on the houses on the homes of several and all of the leaders including suchi and. she has she has been placed under house arrest we understand. she's no stranger to the state she was a political prisoner under house arrest for 15 years during previous military dictatorships but you know he had just won 2 successive elections and she was

obviously expecting to be leading the country tree again. we're not clear that she's got any contact with outsiders but her facebook page has put out a message urging her supporters not to accept the coup and to take the streets to protest so this is being seen as a real blow to democracy in myanmar by other countries at least the military are pointing to election fraud though as a basis for their actions have they presented any evidence to support their claim. they presented a lot of a lot of numbers and a lot of documents or indicating that there were maybe irregularities on voting lists the only people i've spoken to in me not me in math think that that the that there probably were some some list that didn't so exactly correlate but the point that is being made is that the the anybody when this election by such an overwhelming number that really these these these irregularities would be would be minor but the country's election commission has looked into these complaints and

russia where security forces have detained more than $5000.00 people at demonstrations across the country in support of opposition leader alexina violently tens of thousands took to the streets of cities around the country to demand a news release from prison the police put on a massive show of force to try to break up the rallies for. they were warned but they marched anyway anti-government protesters all over russia demanding the release of opposition leader alex saying of all me they defied a ban by the kremlin the response was brutal and a show of force many were arrested some were beaten some hit with 2 select devices . and moscow alone thousands marched constantly changing their route in an attempt to evade the police some gathered outside the prison were all like saying of ali is being held for many of them the protests are about more than just
7:07 am
the opposition leaders the rest protesters also say they are marching against corruption and for more democratic freedoms in russia but also calling in a political battle he used to being told what to do being controlled about a bit young people used to organizing themselves that's why i came here today because i wanted to take in what is happening in my country what you would go ready it's a disgrace. they've stolen everything from us. i live near oil and gas fields and they're just standing is all that i mean yes i have a 2 year old son and they've put in stays in power for the next 16 years since he's climbing a tree that my son will grow up with him and i don't think anything will come of it for years though it's. moscow was still asleep sunday when protests started in russia's far east in siberia as dawn spread across russia up shown of on the rallies spanned across the country's 11 time zones but so did the forceful response

by the authorities. russia's 2nd largest city st petersburg was no exception. some call this russia's most aggressive and fear inducing nationwide operation but others say the government's attempts to overwhelm the protests might actually fuel the flames of the russian opposition and the voices calling for change. our moscow correspondent emily short when joined just emily how significant are these protests and how are they being organized. well terry that's kind of what's new about these protests is that they were being coordinated yesterday via the social media platform telegram so now team was kind of actually messaging protesters telling them where to go and that meant that they were often one step ahead of the police who were trying to kind of contain the protests it's hard to say how many people
7:09 am
came out today yesterday rather in moscow but it did seem that there were a large number we've heard that there's been a record number of arrests across the country and that's also significant i think about these protests that this week and also last week we saw people come out not just in moscow and st petersburg which is kind of the traditional thing that we see in moscow but also in russia rather but also across the entire country in cities that aren't traditional for protests and many of the people i spoke to have been taking part in these protests it's their 1st time on the streets so this protest seems seems to have galvanized a kind of new energy. a new among people here in russia. and how much of a threat to these protests to president vladimir putin. well
7:10 am
i think they are a threat especially because many of the many of the people that i spoke to this weekend last week as well at the protest said that this isn't really so much about . this is about the corruption of the ruling elite this is about very much flooding near putin himself and we've seen that it is a threat i think to the prime line also in the way that they've reacted to the protests 1st of all the mere putin himself actually had to come out last week and talk about the accusations against him of owning this hollis on the black sea those were accusations leveled at him by alex lining in the video on you tube usually putin and also other politicians here just ignore it. and even many opposition protests they just simply ignore them they don't talk about them now we've seen politicians of the highest level including by the mere

putin and day including. the former president who's in the security council now talking about the protests saying that they're just radicals that there aren't that many people on the streets and we've heard state t.v. saying the same thing so this is really something that the kremlin now has to deal with and they're going to be looking for strategies of how to contain these protests and how to prevent them going forward. these protests of course or linked to the opposition leader alexei no. clear yet what's going to become of him he's in jail right. that's the $1000000.00 question at the moment and i think that's probably a question that's being discussed. on the highest level as well because obviously you don't want to kind of make a martyr of. driving more people onto the streets we know that i would say now
7:12 am
finally has a trial tomorrow and he was arrested on kind of old embezzlement accusations he was he had a suspended sentence and now the prison service here in russia is asking for his his suspended sentence to be turned into real jail time so tomorrow he could actually get several years in jail we might see him be put under house arrest that's one other option that people are discussing here but it's kind of unclear i think it is an important question for the kremlin though going forward and we thank you very much that was our moscow correspondent and we sure. now a couple of other stories making headlines today the european union says drug maker astra zeneca has agreed to make up part of the vaccine shortfall it announced earlier this month the drug maker will now deliver 40000000 doses in the 1st quarter 9000000 more than last week's all for the firm's cutting supplies to the e.u. due to production problems. thousands of brazilians took to the streets on sunday
