scene that is the basis for those talks going on in the chancery and via video conference says that the current restrictions will probably be extended until the 7th of march at least until america is said to want them to be extended until the 14th of march so there's going to be a debate there and then the draft paper also says that the issue of reopening schools and kindergartens and just when and how is going to be up to the states themselves to decide and one thing seems to be clear already that head dresses might be able to reopen as early as the 1st of march now germany's federal system has worked for and against it this crisis is this prompted people to say that things need to change well most people do seem to agree that germany did do fairly well during the 1st wave of the pandemic last year last spring because of its federal structure because of course local clusters of new infections
4:04 pm
were easily identified locally and then what targeted locally so that means restrictions were imposed regionally without having to drag the entire country into lockdown but now during the vaccine rollout the federal structure has added to the fact that it's been extremely complicated it's been extremely slow germany is still not in a position where it can safely say that a majority of people are necessary for the virus to go away have been vaccinated it's far from that situation and so of course there is a big debate about just how good this federal structure is at the same time of course when it comes to issues like education the state premiers say we need a federal structure we need to have the ultimate say about which measures to impose and which not. you know and i thank you. well the german leaders in not meeting may want to look north for inspiration to

the city of rostock which has made it through the winter months with exceptionally low numbers of covered 19 cases w. put on a face mask and went there to find out the secret of its success. is it the cool baltic greece or the rather calm and collected mindset of people in the north of germany so far they have made it well through the covert crisis especially here in the city of boston infection numbers are currently lower than the german everett. to supernews we are disciplined northern germans are quite different from everyone else. so we're a bit more nordic and distance anyway maybe that's our secret recipe to be allowed to get so hard to try to break it down put in rules so that it doesn't increase on the seniority because there's the secrets timing might have been one reason very
4:06 pm
early on the city started testing more people than ever it masks quickly became mandatory in designated places and alcohol was spent on the streets earlier than in most places in germany. another reason might be him of our stocks mayor he is originally from denmark and had just started his political career when the pandemic hits before that he was an entry printer helpful when leading a team. minded people looked very surprised when i said now we're going to shut everything down it took 15 minutes and then they started working all together as a strong team and immediately put my words in action and i can understand that when the new mayor suddenly says we're going to shut everything down they are. now he wants to do things differently again the mayor has suggested opening up businesses before everyone else as an example for germany. we would be very happy
4:07 pm
to offer ourselves as a pilot city that way we can look at which concepts can be implemented that's the search reason for the low number of infections could be the north specs a nation strategy relative to its inhabitants they have vaccinated more people than any other region in germany. and there is something else a few family doctors are gaining nationwide attention because they started vaccinating people in their own practice unique in germany because so far people had to go to vaccination centers to get the japanese administering it has been doable for doctors here contrary to popular belief the biotech pfizer vaccine can be stored at normal french temperature for a couple of days. mine my wish of course would be that when we have enough vaccine available in the near future that we will have proven with this model project it's possible the family doctors can do the vaccinations it has brought in this idea and
4:08 pm
let the family doctors take over from when him. but germany is still missing vaccine doses until that problem is solved the country's north will have to continue counting on its discipline and maybe the fresh baltic breeze. such as in the u.k. have discovered that a common asked most treatment appears to reduce the need for hospitalization under recovery time for cover 1000 patients a month long study by oxford university scientist was inspired by the fact that patients with chronic respiratory disease when health steroids is part of that treatment under represented amongst the hospitalized covered 900 patients. trial was led by oxford university is a professor. who was who also co-author of the study welcome to day w. this sounds like a big step forward given that aspirin medication is widely available and inexpensive. yes i mean it was. quite
4:09 pm
fascinating that the study was suggestive of of a positive outcome would be inhaled medicines. and we are quite. pleased with that but obviously with the understanding that it was a small limited study and so last our results would be suggestive of that and we look forward to hearing from. investigators who are also looking in similar fashion similar medicines ok so as a small study we were able to identify what it was about these ozma medications that makes them so effective against common symptoms it's so studies already in the process so early on in the pandemic i'm from last year showed that in in i know the bullet tree the ass night inhaled medicines could reduce virus replication in the lung knighting said but this is experimental studies and our findings that
4:10 pm
actually chronic illnesses with respect she mentioned such as asner and comic strip to common disease was not a big feature of people who got admitted to hospital from the chinese data for example back in march to last year kind of supported us to to test that. hypothesis that research question as to whether this medicine could perhaps help people in early on in my disease and illness as was it's important to have said no that what we are talking about a treatment for people who have contracted covered rather than as a preventative measure that's correct yes. so. what happens from here that do you wait for more scientists to do more research do you put in every said proposal the way whites 2 for the price of us medications to shoot through the roof as the companies realize that i'm to something. well i think
4:11 pm
what's really important is that actually this is a signal in one in one piece of work in the community there will be believe lots of other studies coming out quite soon i hope and from across the world that all perhaps slightly different in their design of studies and but if this similar messages are coming through and i guess we will have to reflect as to whether actually and there is potentially a treatment for for early covert illness well let's hope that this leads to a lead somewhere thank you so much for joining us professor of mona battle from oxford university thank you thank you very much. ok u foreign policy chief burrell scuse me let's take a look at some of the stories making headlines around the world the president of the european commission has acknowledged failings in the blocks fights against the coronavirus are to fund the lives as the e.u. was late with its approval on roll outs of vaccines but she defended the overall

strategy of trying to beat the pandemic with a unified plan for all 27 member nations. security forces in israel have clashed with hundreds of ultra orthodox jews protesting against lockdown restrictions police use water cannon to disperse the crowd public anger is building against of the dumps community and just continue to hold large weddings and funerals soundness . salvation he says he's right wing parties are prepared to back a new government led by money or dragging support from mr solve a nice crucial to drag his bid to become prime minister after just 70 contests step down at the end of january. rescue workers in india are still searching for dozens of people trapped inside a tunnel 3 days after a glass or collapsed and set off a massive flood more than 170 people may say 30 bodies have been sound.

the army in myanmar has raided the party headquarters of detained leader sang suchi the international community is becoming increasingly concerned as the military tightens its grip on power and cracks down on nationwide protests but demonstrators remain defiant returning to the streets for a 5th day demanding the release of their elected leaders. it looks like a simple quirky demonstration. but this group of young protesters and young gone risking their lives. i know your name for this is a protest idea from the young generation and we are always thinking about how to be more creative because we may need international attention one of the group remains on the turret off to choose days of violence in which police fired rubber bullets and water cannons the protesters the military leaders who staged a coup on february 1st have declared such trolleys illegal there were also reports
4:14 pm
of large on unishe and being fired. at least 2 people critically injured. but again to our middle now we say that the military is taking brutal action against us. but when young people will leave the protests through various groups in every place away my general pissing me demonstrate is a calling for an end to the military genter and freedom for the nation's elected leader and sons that she and her allies they are also calling for a new constitution and more democratic freedoms their cause has attracted international support with the u.s. a u.n. condemning the use of force we repeat our calls for the military to relinquish power restore democratically elected government release those detained and lift all telecommunication restrictions in to refrain from violence and having gauge with.
4:15 pm
india do us stralia and discuss this you do a shoot just today with the chinese for a minister. we all agree on the need to create responses the military justified their coup by claiming widespread voter fraud in the november polls which sora land . the day the kitchen beppe this convention issued a statement basically urging itself 400000 members to join the civil disobedience movement and i think that the generals particularly the senior general amir lonnie may have underestimated the strength of the new generation and desire to live if the free and democratic law is not. you know ready to be. put back
4:16 pm
under the boot what the un on that point then so what is it about today's protests after this latest coup what is different about these process from those that have happened in may and not in the past. well the protests started it you know as early as 96263 when the burmese military 1st stage is a fully fledged coup in march 962 but the difference between coups you know the real one in 1982 and this one you know on the 1st of february or last monday and the 962 to enjoy a semblance of you know popular support because the military presented the justification. you know on grounds of
4:17 pm
national or disintegration and so there were some worries about minorities are separating from the union and also the economy was in the hands of what the majority consider foreigners and today i mean last week whose death friend the overwhelming majority of the electorate of 38 millions you know gave suchi and the national league for democracy a crushing not simply a landslide a crushing victory over the military's proxy and the other one that's something that is a forgive me for interrupting but we get that so so the people are effectively behind the civilian way of doing things they've had a taste of democracy and they want more but this is a tricky one for the generals because how do they climb down from venice and not get caught and avenged in the streets. yeah i think that you know as if there is
4:18 pm
no exit you know a safe exit for particularly number one general who has become the most you know reviled and hated military leader so watching the popular will i think i think we may be. heading to a bloody showdown and the public is increasingly strident and also you know once maybe one silver lining is that the united states has a different radically different type of leadership in in the white house today and also i think he did this coup is not even fully supported by the beijing or you know chinese communist leaders that because this isn't good for them either and so there are security council call for reversal of this although it's not binding
4:19 pm
thank you for joining us dr dr manzoni at every human rights activist and to the united states where the senate has voted to proceed with a 2nd impeachment trial of former president donald trump the chairman divided largely along party lines in backing the democrats' argument that the trial is constitutional mr trump is accused of inciting the storming of the capitol home john you want to say that left 5 people dead. in this book 56 the day 44 a clear decision in a divided chamber donald trump will face a 2nd impeachment trial. pursued with a trial the senate vote affirmed that the trial was constitutional. stop the steel. to make their case the democratic prosecutor showed a video as evidence of trumped firing up his supporters and head of the storming of
4:20 pm
the capitol on january 6th. can vote fraud and through it breaks up everything doesn't it when you catch somebody in a fraud you're allowed to go by very different rules you ask with a high crime and misdemeanor is under our constitution that's a high crime and misdemeanor. and head of the vote republicans had argued that trump could not be convicted once out of office this was dismissed by the prosecution. their argument is that if you commit an impeachable offense in your last few weeks in office you do it with constitutional impunity you get away with it. so were columns and lawyers also resorted to video arguing that the trial was politically motivated and divisive based on the impeachment doctrine which vote yes i would vote yes i would but i would. with this trial you will open
4:21 pm
up new and bigger wounds across the nation for a great many americans see this process for exactly what it is a chance by a group of partisan politicians seeking to eliminate donald trump from the american political scene. in a congress still reeling from last month's events it is partisan politics that makes it very unlikely the prosecution will get the 2 thirds majority required in the senate to convict trump. let's get more from date of loser us from mr williams blue cross welcome william let's start with yesterday then what were the main takeaways from day one of this trial. i felt yes it was very much a preview of what we can come to expect over the next coming days remember they were arguing constitutionality of the trial not the trial itself but we saw a lot of what's to come with democrats presenting both a legal constitutional case for convicting the president for an impeachment as well
4:22 pm
as creating an emotional case by showing video from the day of the attack at the capitol by very much linking those images to comments from donald trump and trying to remind senators especially republican senators who are very hesitant to go against from just how they felt especially the reminder that mike pence the vice president vice president was in self directly under threat as were all of those people sitting in the senate chamber listening to those statements meanwhile the other side trump's lawyers saying you know the exact opposite yes what happened on january 6th was a horrible thing they condemned it but trump was not responsible that's of course the case they're trying to make but their case was quite roundly bastid even by republicans saying that it was weak it was terrible it was perplexing it did make a lot of sense donald trump himself is reported to be rather angry with that 1st presentation so that's kind of where we stand going into the actual trial today
4:23 pm
this is a funny we had sort of trial isn't it i mean what witnesses what will be sworn in but we've we've seen the jurors the senate has the very sort of potties adoniah only a handful of republican senators of voting for this to continue doing expect these jurors the senate to ignore the evidence and continue along party lines. and the senators themselves are sworn in they take an oath to be impartial we should be very clear that although the senate takes on an air of being a court of justice a court of law and of course is not really a court of law in a real court of law the prosecution and the defense get to pick the juries to make sure that they are as impartial as possible they can dismiss a jury or juries jurors if they think there's any kind of bias and of course those options are not available to the prosecution and defense in this so-called court of law this impeachment trial in the senate and the senators themselves have their own
4:24 pm
political bias and their own political leanings of course so there's already problems with impartiality and fair justice in a real court of law you can imagine just how much more there is how much more trouble there is to really look at the evidence fairly in such a highly partisan charged situation like in the senate so talk us through what happens today is there anything in particular we should be looking out for democrats will begin their up to 16 hours of statements of making their case that the defense after that will have equal amount up to 16 hours to present their case we can expect to see much more of the video a much more of the dramatic video some of it maybe we haven't even seen before. it will be interesting because some of that is probably evidence also being used by the f.b.i. and law enforcement officials for prosecuting actual people on the scene actual people who are involved that have been arrested so far in taking part in the attack on the capitol and linking that like i said just like they've already done linking that to donald trump's calm comments not just on january 6th in the days leading up
4:25 pm
to it but for the weeks after the election and even before the election where donald trump was selling doubt in the system spreading lies and conspiracy theories and really whipping up his hardcore supporters into believing something that simply was not true or good talking to you thank you for that well in group last. family zoom comfort says or should become the norm for so many of us during this pandemic but not everyone understands the technology in this courtroom video for example had american lawyer has a few problems with a spill even if you have a filter turned on in the video settings you might want to. hear about and didn't hear me judge i can hear you i think it's a filter it and then should know how to remove it not my sister she's trying to but oh i'm retired. that's a mere lot of what's not i'm not

a cat. i can i can see that. i think if you click the i'm sure i sorted it out in the end as a reminder how top stories i germany's lead us of because a virtual summit to agree on the next steps out of the pandemic chance of america wants a national walkout and extend it but some of the 16th regional leaders are likely to push back. international condemnation is growing as me and massive military types its grip on power the army is right at the party headquarters of detained played out on some sushi i'm just process is taking to the streets for a 5th day. as if you're up to date i'll have more at the top of the hour made in germany next to taking a look at digital eyes edition with. everything
