it's nice to have you with us lawyers for donald trump have wrapped up their defense in the former u.s. presidents impeachment trial denying that trump played any part in inciting the capitol hill riots last month the defense team took 3 hours to make their case and called the trial a political witch hunt the senate will reconvene on saturday morning when members are expected to vote on whether to convict trump. day 4 of a trial which has an all but guaranteed outcome. yet its participants push on and it was time for don't trump legal team to make that defense and lay out why the former president shouldn't be convicted. the article of impeachment now before the senate is an unjust and blatantly unconstitutional act of political vengeance their argument focused on freedom of speech insisting trump was

exercising his 1st amendment rights when cutting down on the election results the constitution in the 1st amendment must certainly apply to these and pietschmann proceedings and mr trump's speech deserves full protection under the 1st amendment . the defense also showed a 10 minute video of democrats using the word fight to argue that trump's words of fought like hell on january 6th did not incite the riot is who attacked the capitol afterward suddenly the word fight is off limits spare us the pock receiving faults indignation. the defense team's statements foliage 2 days of arguments by democrat prosecutors who said trump set the stage for the quality of generally 6 play said he summoned the crowd to washington and did nothing to stop the rioting even as

a played out on television. this is about protecting our republic and articulating in defining the standards of presidential conduct and if you want this to be a standard for totally appropriate presidential conduct going forward be my guest but we're headed for a very different kind of country at that point mr president the democrats are unlikely to gain a conviction as few republican senators have come out against trump who remains popular among republican voters. both parties are a get to move to a final vote which could come as soon as saturday. but all signs point to it ending as a partisan draw and a 2nd acquittal for donald trump. for more i'm joined by detail reporter william glue cost william good to see you after their opening arguments some days ago trump's defense team was widely criticized by fellow

republicans what's been the reaction to their arguments yesterday. now that's a really good point you make michael it's important to see yesterday's very fiery very muscular defense of donald trump albeit short just 3 hours of the a lot of 16 hours in the context of their opening more or the arguments they made during the constitutionality question just a few days ago which was roundly lambasted for being weak and me enduring even terrible perplexing not just from democrats but republicans themselves donald trump was reported to have been outraged by that 1st show a few days ago it was all guns blazing coming out yesterday and also to remember that there's been a lot of shake ups due to that perceived weakness originally as a lot of shake ups in the trump legal team which may have had an effect on planning on organization and on of the arguments they were going to use and for even for republicans it fell short of one of their key concerns which was how much did

donald trump know about the threat to michael mike pence his life the vice president his vice president as donald trump was criticizing mike pence for his so-called weakness on the electoral college process how did defense arguments compare to the prosecution's. well the prosecution the house democrats the managers they laid out a long and detailed list of of instances that doll used to egg on his supporters including of course the denial of reality that you lost the election for not just on january 6th the day of the attack itself but his mask his absence in responding to it is a ignoring of republicans pleading with him to to call the mobs back his supporters back off the capital and weeks leading up to it in the election process and really his entire term in office whereas his defenders yesterday only focus on january 6th that fight like hell speech that's the only thing they focused on but of course the

the impeachment article is much broader than that and the trump defense didn't address any of those extra points instead referred to it what about his own case drawing a false equivalency between donald trump's words and actions and other intense rhetoric from politicians at other times and in other contexts that were not apples to apples. william thank you so much. to your now and former european central bank chief mario draghi has been sworn in as the new prime minister of italy the 73 year old economist will head a new national unity government his cabinet includes both outside experts in season politicians the effects of the pandemic have sparked a deep recession in italy druggy is credited with saving europe's single currency following the global economic crisis of 2008 he was asked to take over the helm by

italy's president after outgoing prime minister's. administration collapsed. journalist seem a good to has been following the new government formation in rome she described mario druggies choices for ministers. well after all the infighting in wrangling he really has created this broad parliamentary majority and it's seen in his cabinet you've got 15 out of the 23 polls that have been set up that have gone to political figures across the political spectrum whether it's the center left the center right the far right or the 5 star movement which is the largest party in parliament on top of that he's given key positions to technocrats that is the economy minister is a member from the bank of italy director general then you have the new position of an ecological or green transition ministry that go into

a physicist on top of that the digital transition ministry as well as the infrastructure and transport ministry he pulls all going to technocrats executives that have very well respected in their fields so clearly those are some of the issues he wants to focus in that sit though the health minister is the same one that it was in the previous government so clearly looking for continuity on that very key ministry as if he is dealing with a pandemic the un's top human rights body has passed a resolution urging near noise military to release on song suchi and other civilian government leaders detained after the coup earlier this month pressure on the military is also growing within myanmar where large crowds have taken to the streets nationwide to demand the restoration of civilian rule. the hours of darkness are dangerous time and me and maher. stories of the military

their whereabouts or wellbeing. the military's crackdown on dissent is getting harsher by the day. the red cross said 3 people were wounded on friday when police fired rubber bullets in the southeastern city of mommy and oh. arrested protesters gave the 3 fingered salute of the opposition in defiance. meanwhile the military regime began releasing more than $23000.00 prisoners as part of a mass clearing of the country's jails. though the military has presented this as a sign of good will the opposition fears the regime could just be making room for many new arrests i. let's get the latest from phil robertson deputy director of asia division of the human rights watch in bangkok phil welcome to d.w.

i want to start by asking you what you know about the nighttime kidnapping of some opponents of the military. well there is quite clearly an increase in night time raids by the police and military they're going after the activists who they've determined are playing a leading role in these proxy protests and and the nighttime raids are also about trying to intimidate others. there's at least $300.00 people $350.00 people have been arrested since the coup most of them are being held without charges and we want them all released immediately and unconditionally but quite clearly the dragnet is rapidly expanding international pressure is needed to ensure the people who are arrested been are actually released and to tell the c.c.s. rights abuses 23000 inmates as i'm sure you know were released from in march prisons on friday the army would have citizens believe it's an act of goodwill what do you believe well we have seen in the past these kind of tactics by

military governments and myanmar releasing a large number of inmates like this is done to instill chaos you know made these people who are in fact criminals and there's a good reason why they are behind bars and releasing them right in a time of mass protests creates a great deal of uncertainty and fear and we're already seeing that play out on social media as people are saying that these people are involved in various different efforts to sabotage activities or sabotage water supplies or all sorts of things it's all it's a tactic by the military i think in some ways to try to create a great deal of uncertainty at a time when people are out on the streets protesting still is there any chance that the cumulative effect of 2 weeks of mass nationwide protests will move the military to once and for all given. well we hope the military would come to its senses and reverse this who you know install the government that was elected by the people

back in november and let everybody who has been detained go over not seeing not the trend line is actually going the opposite way not only with the rapidly increasing number of arrests but we also see the military junta moving on a cyber security law that is a despot stream that will authorize them to arrest anyone for what they post online and force companies to take down content we even have the junta ordering the media today to stop calling them a regime or. these are not the tactics of someone i think who is trying to negotiate a compromise with the people right phil robertson from human rights watch in bangkok thank you very much thank you to the football now and 2nd place leipsic who stood out spurred friday evening leipzig had a chance to move within 4 points of league leading bahrain with a win and they've managed it with a bit of controversy in bone chilling temperatures. there were few
