in germany as scented here a ceremony last a year long program of events separating jewish contribution to german culture and society german president. is a patron of the series of events. and isn't 1st you are there is a lot to discover and rediscover during these years of come immigration's in philosophy literature painting science medicine economy jewish people have contributed to our history shaped it an enlightened our culture judaism made a decisive contribution to germany's emergence into the modern age in the more down the bag. along with his acknowledgement that show each culture is part of german culture there was also a warning that anti semitism is on the rise in germany. of
9:03 pm
heart or not it is still true today even those who have never met a jewish person and who have never shown any interest in jew days in or dos people still harbor anti semitism prejudices prejudices are handed down from generation to generation and the less someone knows about jews demoed a prejudice is entier we have to address it is especially in schools where we must not only convey more knowledge about judaism but also share more information about anti semitism. densher of anti-semitism was also highlighted by presidents time in my ear. then it's wouldn't it's as if i could wish something chairman president put the south come immigration it would not only be a clear recognition that jewish people off part of the sub 0 society but i would also wish that we could take decisive steps against those who seek to question does
9:04 pm
god it does not or in fog is still the you know will become immigration's hundreds of years of eventful common history teaches us that the german federal republic can only be home and if jewish people feel fairly at home here and so all those of whom. were happy to have with us the man behind today's event andrew kovacs is the managing director of the 1700 years of jewish life in germany association and he joins us from cologne mr coach thanks for being here if there was one big message about the year of commemoration what would that be. we want to we wanted to show that we have a shared past shared history in the show society between jews and non jews and we want to show that we have it shipped over 150000 jews living now ija many and
9:05 pm
there is a growing tendency your in the past years and very very want to show that we want to have a common future as well and to have this common future we need to understand this is a bit like neighbors that it's not enough this is our approach to learn from each other . it's very important to spend some quality time and to build up an empathy and only with this empathy who we are we are convinced that we can fight against and so that there's a lot against going conspiracy theories. you know when it when you get here and then as i've done for a while it's really hard to miss that a renaissance or an incredible renaissance of jewish life or there's a klezmer music or israeli reza you know restaurants and so on but the same time you're reminded everywhere of the holocaust whether it's for morals or the style or how do you reconcile these 2 disparate you know events cerf eeling is going on in german at the same time in your head. well it is very hot and the heart
9:06 pm
of this story and it's the most terrible crime committed if you meant probably and we cannot forget it and it's very hard to combine nevertheless we have a new generation of young people and we have to look into the past we have to learn but they also want to look into the future they want to live together and not forget that we are the 4th generation so we need to still maintain the remembrance we need to still learn and ensure that it never happens again and in the same time we also have to look at the positive moments and we also have to look into the future. and you know your. earlier touching on uptake an anti semitic incidence in germany in the official body from the federal government there is one there's a person who monitors or says that it's a growing problem where does it come from on a personal level does it make you feel afraid. well anticipate is a man to judaism is probably all virus mankind it's all were over 1700 years old as
9:07 pm
. today's germany so it's has a very very all tradition unfortunately and it is still statistically every 4th person for example in germany has anti semitic thinking in their heads. it doesn't make me afraid because it was there and it is that it makes me very concerned of course and i think i'm talking will says that you want to live there after a year and this really is the time now to find that and to try to try to lower this kind of percentage for the future and i guess a part of that you know becoming safer and having people understand about the empathy we're talking about is understanding the holocaust why is that still such a sensitive topic for many germans. well we are living 76 years after the shot it is actually nothing when you look at the end history and if we
9:08 pm
had gone off the generations like my friend's parents were in that race you can use and i'm talking to people whose grandparents might be might have been involved also in the crimes that were committed during the nazi time so i think it is a very very big challenge still so actually communicate and to get kind of relax and elite this way how to get into the future. this is i think the main reason ok and very cogent thank you for communicating with us about 700 years of jewish life in germany thank you it. is time now to turn to some of the other stories making news this hour. thousands of people have taken to the streets of men more for another day of protest against the military coup the protests come despite confirmation that at least 2 people were killed during demonstrations in recent days local media reported numerous protests took place in the country's 2 largest

becoming a pro football or in europe which i had a mole a childhood dream but he has made it thousands of young people come here from africa every year with the same dream. you have like 6000 kids coming from happy guy. out of the 6. i can tell you maybe 4 or 5 would make it what a more diverse. names there are no more than i can and. i am a father of 2. and i also have a husband to a lovely wife and. a philanthropist and. i have a fondness from back home in kenya where i grew up where i tried to have the kids to get what you wanted to give them hope. but then even. so what's it like to be one of the few african footballers who make it from europe john amal is one of 2006 africans currently playing abroad the kenyan international
9:18 pm
left his home in 2007 but he hasn't forgotten where he came from. he has the same to give something back to the community as african superstars like da drug but. some are so. and some of your money they became role models for every young african footballer. it was never easy for johanna the place he grew up in still haunts him today. dan dora is an eastern suburb of nairobi it's known for being the biggest dump site in kenya. pretty difficult place i live pretty close to the dump site walking distance. so it was really really really. understand she it's
9:19 pm
better than. unfortunately. you know a lot of fun is new and less than $1.00 right and that means education so the only thing was more. because i stuck to food more. and more has been living in europe since 2007. 2 kids were born here in belgium and they called the country home. just one example of how much has changed since you arrived in europe. from all those turned out for 5 clubs in belgium most recently spent 4 years with the small of the to bruges based 1st division clubs. keep it in mind and i'll be a place like this. now so you can come from training and just pick up. whatever
9:20 pm
you choose you know and going there you could not we played without shoes the beginning one where you know shoes in the boys you know. the. good boys at home. you know and it was just fun just to distract us from everything that's going on around you it was more. i mean skip. all of the trash is from all of the need obviously not everyone for your trash in general. we. just have to meet so we used plastic bags from for example to make. my friends you know stopping for more trying to.
9:21 pm
do so then. it became a part of our lives. there's a saying in kenya nothing good comes from dunder. what worries johanna is that kids like alice sundra are still facing the same problems a bit he faced as a youngster 20 years ago. life is hard in the ghetto sometimes you go without food you get used to it sometimes you watch somebody get mugged they just want to feed their families they're for life here is very hard many have left football for crime we have buried a lot of them and life goes on.
9:22 pm
johanna's parents don't live in dan door anymore with his help they were able to move to a wealthier safer part of nairobi. his parents were initially skeptical that football could provide a stable career when he was 13 his mother stopped him from going to norway for trials 2 years later he went and gave the money he earned to his mom. when he brought me the money. i realized that even football can be beneficial. his father had retired but i was still cutting people's here for money. by this time johanna had already entered the football academy of a belgian agent in kenya and aged 17 he signed his 1st contract in europe.
9:23 pm
so were never. were never. given. in 2017 johannah decided to do something for his community he set up his own foundation just 300 yards away from the dump site he established a soccer academy. to sandra and terry armor all their 2 kids who dream of following in johanna's footsteps and becoming professional footballers. i would want to play in the english premier league league or all syria as long as i'm able to help the people back in the ghetto and get them out of the state they're in. and we're proposing. alice sunderland 6 of the kids have

a scholarship from the johanna amala foundation this is where they go to hone their skills. compared to europe there are not enough quality academies here for players in the decisive age bracket between 12 and 16. our main objective is to level up good soccer in kenya. and locally if going to have a very competitive league not only your success when you go to europe so these young kids what we impart to them they're going to be poor when they're here in kenya. andrew juma is an example of a former academy player who made it in the kenyan premier league he pushes the boys to focus on soccer and education as not all of them will become pro footballers. they have got to made my mentality to feel more lives are. when i was a kid. around a $1000.00 approximately $1000.00. and doesn't follow now because i can't even
9:25 pm
pay my sister's school fees name was a teen mom up my mama and me i can't even buy it was when i was in doubt hardly some people bought me boots so now i can do the same. it's a tough task to change the kids perspective and make them see the opportunities available in africa as most of them will always dream of making it in europe. my advice now i'm especially now because i have a lot a lot of kids who look up in the phone later. to build this talked about because if we do it there they are a big. part of those kids who will make it and they're living you know and it is them here but the difficulty is that when they see you here they think you have what you have there and you waiting.
9:26 pm
for african players come here it's really really important that they get some help in our integrated efforts that. they were here they cannot confront you direct especially in belgium. you do something wrong something they don't understand like they want to live in africa. they don't like something they'll tell you and then you have to deal with it. fortunately johanna got plenty of advice from older african players helping him get used to the european in tallahassee. football so i. i gets to watch him do what's he now and it's a good thing to see. throughout his career john
