this is d.w. news live from the land pope francis calls for peace from the ruins of churches in iraq's mosul the pontiff is visiting a rocky christian to ensure the true talent of islamist extremism he's encouraging the country's christian minority to stay in iraq and help rebuild also coming up. protesters around on the streets of manhattan cities once again this is on reports of police raids and a number of arrests as authorities attempt to push back against opponents of last month. and speaking out against harassment in india

a lot has improved since the country's me to lose that but many women still feel they are being protected at work. i'm rebecca ridges welcome to the program pope francis has spent day 3 of his trip to iraq touring the northern part of the country including a visit to mosul the one time stronghold of the so-called islamic state his latest stop in the city of carrack rush where tens of thousands lined the streets as francis and enormous security detail made their way to the center of the city and to the church of the immaculate conception just 4 years ago much of the region was under i asked control before liberation by iraqi and international troops. it's a busy day 3 earlier today the pope flew north from baghdad to the city of erbil
1:02 pm
then my heart helicopter to mosul and next to carry he's now back in erbil where he will shortly hold mass for 10000 papal before returning to baghdad and then on to rome on monday. i'm joined now by journalist owen whole the way he's in erbil in iraq oh and what's been the pontiff main message for the papal of northern iraq today i think the visit particularly to kara cautious it's very symbolic about time was completely decimated by the sight that i cannot say when they think they took a town i mean even during the liberation of the church the section on they completely burnt out so it's very symbolic they came back there and gave the speech in that church so real signal to the christian community of northern iraq to return and rebuild rebuilt rebuild their lives so we don't know it's in the north of the country. yeah i mean it's a pretty incredible to say those pictures of the pope tearing around those former

iowa strongholds you know me as the saying character. this must undoubtedly be their most dangerous part of the journey. yet it's beyond me when you know going into these areas we've got you certainly see it was for myself i said stronghold so him going to this area it is very very definitely risky pop the trip on terms of price operationally that they're not they don't have the capacity anyway to go out and launch for any any sort of a nice attack so i think yes he is very sweet and it's also both very strong security so i think the safety is always paramount construct but these are definitely at risk you risk your leg to look at the school it was only christians in these areas that were targeted by as and the violence there during that time what's been the reaction by muslims to his visit in the area. i think in general you know it's been a very positive message i think i think that more broadly across the different sects of iraq what is showcasing is the fact that iraq its is
1:04 pm
a multitude of different faiths and more suits and different people who can do it and country itself it's not it's not purely something just that the democrats control of war and also it's also showcased in that people of iraq live across different regions they are they they do have a lot of harmonious and continuity as well so i think it's a generally showcasing a pull to message ok now shortly the pope is due to say mass in erbil with thousands of people in attendance but of course there is a pandemic going on was that taken into consideration i think i think it was i mean in terms of the capacity of stadium when it's going to keep the address it has 25000 only 10000 people attending so social distancing is is being is being is being is being or about i think quite but it is definitely a technique of possibility that this might cause months if not in corona virus cases the rock itself is not even started fascination program and additionally its health systems is it's very much it is very much at the elementary level so it's

definitely at risk if foreign journalists own hole the way speaking to us from in iraq thanks very much for the update thanks. as to man man now where protesters are out on the streets again to continue their demonstrations against last month's military coup tens of thousands are marching with the largest protests in the city of mandalay there are protests too in the largest city yang ghonim follows police raids targeting opposition leaders witnesses described hearing shots during those raids a number of people were arrested it comes as the chinese government says it's willing to work with the relevant parties to ease tensions. a journalist a man joins me now from yang gone police have stepped up raids overnight have we seen much violence there today. yes although we haven't seen quite as much violence as we saw earlier in the week and on last sunday there has been quite
1:06 pm
a lot more violence that we saw in the last few days during the night raids quite a number of people reported seeing their neighbors being taken who were then subsequently beat and in fact you saw that one local and national league for democracy ward official was actually killed due to his injuries sustained while they were being raided and then recording protests that happened throughout the day we also saw the police force there bring out some of their crowd dispersal meant that from the last few days which was largely to stun grenades as well as a tear gas today we saw that police began to use rubber bullets as well as life will it again right now the chinese government where hearing is saying that they willing to engage with all sides and all parties to ease tensions in myanmar what's their role in this. so the chinese government has a very long history in myanmar being them our neighbor in terms of sharing
1:07 pm
a land border as well as being one of the largest economies in the region the chinese government has also had a hand in development of the country through foreign direct investment as well as in the ongoing conflicts especially in the border regions with ethnic minorities at times arming ethnic armed organizations as well as arming and supplying and supporting them you know our military and so it's it's a very complicated sort of relationship and many in the pro-democratic camp are definitely very suspicious of chinese involvement. right and journalist and yangon thanks very much for the update. thank you for having us now let's get you up to speed on some other stories making news around the world protesters in bangkok have defied a ban on public gatherings to call for the release of their detained late is they said photos of thailand's king alight as they have held

said that women are not yet properly represented at the highest levels of politics and business and she warns that progress towards gender equality is under threat from the coronavirus. then there isn't that of we have to ensure that the pandemic does not cause us to fall back into gender roles we thought we had already overcome once again it is overwhelmingly women who have to balance home schooling childcare and their own work life. due to the talents and perspectives of both sexes are enormously important especially now during the global pandemic that's why we need parity in every area of society that also includes women finally being able to earn as much as men. in india a recent court verdict acquitting an accuser in a defamation case was seen as a victory for women who have spoken out against harassment while offices and workplaces are gradually improving protections many women in the informal sector

tough since 2006 the radical islamist al-shabaab militia has been expanding its grip on power in somalia their fighters occupy almost 2 thirds of the country on the horn of africa. bomb attacks in the capital mogadishu have doubled. and thousands of somalians have been killed last week on. every day the somali police do all they can to protect mogadishu from terrorist attacks. and the books he says not to the police will find out more and the entire geisha. mogadishu's central prison is packed $52.00 itself allegedly all of them terrorists are the allies oh most a monetarist you shouldn't get too close to them as a. top bottom and top dog in your sounds come back.

in 2018 abdirahman omar osman was made mayor of mogadishu he died in a terror attack just weeks after filming. risk of bullets fissions our main target of attacks for mogadishu's residents to it's a daily struggle in the city of chaos ravaged by 30 years of civil conflict. after we arrive in somalia we enlist a british security detail to accompany our camera. one of them is this x m ali and special forces soldier. who is like oh. yes. it's. different if. we are

escorted by 8 security officers during several weeks of filming. but this peaceful atmosphere is deceptive. mogadishu experiences bomb attacks on a daily basis we've barely set off before we're stopped at the 1st checkpoint. and it's just. something that has something happened yes an explosion. a bomb has just gone off in the immediate vicinity leaving behind in a column of smoke. the city is sealed off straight away but we're still able to reach our fortress of a hotel. it's protected by bomb walls on either side and armed guard search every vehicle on entry. this hotel hasn't welcomed any tourists in decades. most of the guests are regional somali and officials who have fled their homes and sought refuge here with their

families. even the chief of police lives here. on the other side of the hotel the security firm has installed cameras everywhere. to bridge. the entire perimeter of the hotel can be monitored from these screens and they can also keep tabs on the firm's armored vehicles thanks to g.p.s. . yes trackers. are. when official information is lacking on an attack they resort to social media for the latest news. to tell you to come for the latest news. and to not. look you see you with police commissioner so much useless so you don't appear to know you you went to the checkpoint. for church and it's

one of the tower from last year. we get hold of this footage the same night. and more than 30 people injured. somalia has been in the grip of chaos since 1991. shaken by civil war piracy. his longest terrorism and famine. more than half a 1000000 people have died as a result during those 3 decades. you can't miss the traces of war in mogadishu the old city has been almost totally destroyed. public institutions hardly function and the economy is on the brink of collapse.
1:21 pm
most of mogadishu's 2 and a half 1000000 residents live hand to mouth. they work in small shops or farm their livestock here between the rundown buildings. an average wage is just $2.00 a day. barely enough to buy the essential. that. more than 2 thirds of the population are under $25.00. most of somalia's young people survived. on small jobs. like mohammed. the 22 year old makes a meager living with his tucked up one of the thousands of tiny taxis on mogadishu's road. anyone can become it took took driver. i didn't go to school and i regret it

because it would have helped me get a better job. with no other public transport available mohammad can work up to 20 hours a day but his customers pay him via text message. if you say yes the system is called e.v.c. that's how people pay me i never take cash. and i don't have a bank account but this way my income is safe. a hassle. but his income isn't enough to finance a driving license so with every road check mohamed is at the mercy of corrupt police officers. should i usually get blackmailed at checkpoints as soon as they ask for my papers i have to pay $5.00 to avoid arrest then i'll do the same again a few kilometers later. mohamed lives in the city center. shares this house

with his mother and 5 teenage brothers and sisters everything he earns goes to feeding his family. behind in the open you could tell him my father died in 2011 we were eating breakfast together then we heard gunshots oh he went out to see what was happening and the terrorists shot him in the heart. and he died. today mohammad has visitors childhood friends who like him grew up during the civil war violence is an everyday part of their lives. so there are a lot of problems he has no work killed for no reason my fee is really difficult. have you lost friends why not just one or 2 we've all lost a lot of friends in explosions others decided to leave for europe and that's why i want to leave too because. for them europe

represents the hope of a better life. every one of these friends attempted to flee the country in 2016. i wanted to go to france because i have friends. one in paris and one in another city. i have friends in germany. by friends in denmark. they paid smugglers around $7000.00 for their escape. they each took different routes but they all went to hell and back. so. when i left somalia i went via kenya 1st they can't me prisoner there i didn't have anyone to pay my ransom they kept me there for 7 days so i eventually made it to south sudan. i got on a boss and there was an ambush i have
1:25 pm
a conscience and then i found. that you broke my arm my hand isn't straight and. i look i took a bullet in my back. i thought the bullet to still inside. you can feel it. despite everything they endured they would still suffer the hellish journey all over again to get out of somalia who still wants to go to europe. no harm its journey was cut short in sudan held captive in an oil tank for several days by bandits he managed to get word back to his clan leaders. he introduced them to us in somalia they're called sultans. we found out about his situation he was very sick and had water in his lungs we
1:26 pm
sent money over so he could go to hospital and be sent home. so were you ok with him trying to leave somalia and going to europe not at all when no to young people lose their. lives by wanting to go to europe they'll only find misery you'd like you understand that they're afraid to live here for our commission time what's important is what we want to know what they want it's a 1000 times better to live in your own country with your family and work here rather than suffer elsewhere because we have. to convince him to stay the sultan's let mohamed $3000.00 to buy a stock talk he will pay them back when he can. where the state has failed a more traditional hierarchy has filled the vacuum. that's why clans now play such an important role in somalia there are around 2000 clan chiefs like sheikh gar winning his red beard is

a sign of his standing. he was elected 550000 members to sultan of the robust saudi clan in north mogadishu. his status means he is both judge and jury and in some cases he has the power of life and death over his subjects. in law the law lot of the sultan it is not something that you choose it comes from god i have no formal training but if you know the religion by heart you can solve a lot of problems. sultans don't receive a wage so to earn a living she garwin a teaches at a karate school. it earns him the equivalent of $180.00 euros a month. in somalia you have to pay to go to
1:28 pm
a normal state school leaving the poorest somalians to learn to read at religious schools which are free they learn extracts of the koran by heart painted on these wooden boards it's the only book they study. there's no time off for the sultan. class has barely finished before he has to go and deal with an urgent matter one of his clan members is in jail accused of murder. i need to sort this out we need to see how we're going to deal with the victim's family. the accused as i'm deborah zuck he's a police officer he's been charged with killing a civilian at a checkpoint somali authorities have been increasingly harsh on officers accused of abuses like this where you know. actors are. quote sentences you to death by shooting those who oppose the verdict my appeal for

a reliable source. for sheikh garwin they there's no way he'll let one of his clan die and he calls a meeting of the regions clan leaders at a hotel in the city. and then get inside to talk to his mom offers 3 options in this sort of case if we kill another person either the victim's family forgives us before we pay them compensation of this is what we've decided we should indeed live she's got a. lovely little now tradition dictates. that we should pay the equivalent of $100.00 camels to the victim's family cut the bullet here that will wipe it to clean it out. $100.00 camels are worth around $50000.00. the sum is raised through donations from other clan members with everyone giving
1:30 pm
what they can and sums ranging from $5.00 to $200.00 was a little ok everyone listened to me and the doctor nomine you should pay $20.00. 00. 00 people ever refused to pay do you keep the refuse to pay they're punished we give the orders here for. a functioning clan system rules out the need for state sanctioned justice several times. a month later since the civil war broke out the clans prefer to work things out between ourselves about it so much it could let. you know until it is a real national government we can't rely on the judiciary in this country is going to let you know that when. you do that. the defendant will only be released once the victim's family received the $50000.00 they've been promised and that could take months.
