9:02 pm
concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he's born what and who who is having that conversation with you it's a whole dollar out there is out of our grandparents or several conversations a conversation with you with harry about how dark your baby is going to be potentially and what that would mean or look like floyd now for the latest from the fall well charlie just until joins me from london good evening to you charlotte so we know this was an explosive interview serious allegations tell us more about what the boy your family has said in response. yes i mean those allegations particularly the claims that you just heard in the interview clip that we're going to need to have an answer of some kind the world
9:03 pm
family generally doesn't complain doesn't explain that his mantra but in this particular case when allegations of this nature have been leveled at an unnamed member of the royal household this was not going to go away without it being addressed in one way or another by the royal family and we do now this evening have a statement and i will read it to you because some of the the what i think is quite interesting is the whole family's fountain's to the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for harry and meghan the issues race particularly that of race the consenting while some recollections may vary that's taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately megane hereon out she will always be much loved members of the family now what you have to remember is that although this is playing out in public and raises so many questions with regards to quit which are so interesting same to many of our surrounding bracelet running mental health regarding freedom of the press ultimately this is a family issue
9:04 pm
a primary issue that's being played out in a very public sphere that is something that they wanted to address in their statements we've also had say that they want to address it privately and that is key what we what they are attempting to avoid it seems is a big public showdown an airing of all the no injury here that has been raised in the interview this is now the world from its attempts to to calm the situation and to try and shut down says it's a story you saw that earlier today when prince charles was asked in public about the accusations and he simply ignored the question the u.k. public they've had no 24 hours since that interview was aired in the u.k. what has been the reaction to the interview. well i will as i'm sure you can imagine absolutely everybody is talking about it you don't need to be a fan or even a critic of the world family to be engaged in the issues that has been raised here
9:05 pm
i'm sure you can imagine it's been a huge topic on television today it's been paid for already happening in fact one very prominent present here in the u.k. journalists has had to step down from his role because we saw just how creative the debate was on my way out on out how the vision screens the swooning those. who and again how are you making them the way in which that they have their grievances here but is that to say that it's not been an overwhelming overwhelming support for harry and they can hit the house rules have been a degree of criticism of the way this is played out simply those who are friends of the world family thinking that this is extremely just no way all insensitive way that these these problems to be yes it's ok to be used charlotte chosen field but the leads tonight from london charlotte thank you. the judge presiding over the trial of the former police officer accused of murdering george floyd in the u.s.
9:06 pm
city of minneapolis last year has begun choosing a jury the selection was supposed to start yesterday but was delayed after an appeals court ordered the judge to consider an extra murder charge against derek show than you will see here on the right on your screen there he is he's already accused of murder and manslaughter the killing last may of george floyd a black man sparked violent unrest in cities across america. all right our correspondent stefan simons he joins me now in front of the courthouse where this trial is taking place jeff and it must really be almost an impossible task to select an unbiased jury for this case how is this being done yeah absolutely right about this i think this is only existing in a theoretical matter because think about it how can you assure that those 12 jurors
9:07 pm
and up to 4 alternates will be chosen who will be chosen that have to be chosen for this. for this process here for the trial that they can be really truly impartial and that's what they're aiming for here of course impartiality no preexisting notions or understandings or deep opinions by the potential jurors so how does this work this process is called voir dire and that means that the judge the defense as well as the prosecution can and ask those potential jurors. to the specific questions and examine their impartiality now if they if one of those bodies defense team or prosecution wants to dismiss them they can do this and that is called for calls that means not that somebody is really impossible but that prosecution or the defense for some specific reason doesn't like this specific juror and the
9:08 pm
challenge is also of course is that you can end up with a jury here off 10 white people and 2 black people that would never fly never fly in this community and i'm sure not also also not with the judge. but he is facing 2 charges right now 2nd degree murder and manslaughter can you explain the difference . yeah 2nd degree murder is the intentional is causing the death of a person unintentionally and not pretty. not plant the 2nd degree manslaughter charge is a causing the death of a person by being negligent by it happens because you're negligent and that's why the person dies so a unintentional causing the death of a person unintentionally is the 2nd degree murder charge and if so to speak by
9:09 pm
accident thought by negligence of the perpetrator causing the death of another person dead it's the manslaughter manslaughter charge is defined you were in minneapolis last year when the. george floyd was killed how is the city now how was the city been preparing for this trial. is quite a difference here downtown is literally still almost like it goes to what i mean by that is that any. building here behind me and around is still boarded up is has blocked with concrete barriers with various with fencing with wire razor wire there is 2000 national guards here in town you don't see him because they're not present because there's no protest and there's no sign of violence 12 law enforcement agencies are created a platform where they coordinate every step they might take or have to take further
9:10 pm
along in the trial or during the trial so yeah this is now minneapolis is prepared for whatever should happen or could happen here as of now all peaceful. means there in front of the courthouse in minneapolis thank you. well here in germany a scandal over face maps a lawmaker from chancellor angela merkel's christian democrats is quitting over payments that he received for brokering facemask deals from local authorities and another conservative member of parliament is stepping down following claims that he made 600000 euros supplying faceman. what is being called the mask affair surfaced that the end of february when police searched the offices of georg newsline a member of parliament and prominent figure in the conservative c.s.u. party newsline is being probed for bribery he is thought to have accepted over

600000 euros biomass producer to lobby for its product but the affair doesn't stop here nicholas lobel a lawmaker with chancellor angela merkel c.d.u. party admitted his company received 250000 euros to act as a mediator for mask purchases prosecutors are now carrying out an initial review of his case both newsline and rebel have announced their the parcher from the conservative blocs parliamentary group but while luba resigned from parliament effective immediately newsline plans to keep a seat for the opposition f.t.p. party this is not enough for their scrutiny is needed. clarity must be provided to the public millions of people fear for their existence and have seen their freedom restricted and the impression can't be that the few who want to do business from parliament using its letterhead are exploiting this crisis for their own benefit. all. the sister parties c.d.u. and c.s.u.

say they want to conduct a comprehensive investigation into such practices and introduce a code of conduct that would prevent them. i think we need to go a whole step further and make it clear that what is legally possible is not necessarily acceptable for us we need a code of conduct that clearly states that it's not possible or acceptable under any circumstances to benefit financially from the already active role as a member of parliament. up your. the scandal risk spattering merkel's c.d.u. party ahead of 2 important regional elections taking place on sunday in the states of by. in fact i'm back and right now and lacking that recent polls have shown a dip in the party's numbers not good news for the c.d.u. just 6 months before the country's parliamentary elections. for the european parliament has voted to strip parliamentary immunity from 3 of its members who lead

the 2017 kettle on independence referendum they are the former president of spain's symbiotes on the ms catalonia region which them all into other one time cattle on officials each fled spain after the referendum and went on to win seats in the european parliament the trio could now face extradition to spain and face a charge of sedition spain ruled that independence referendum was illegal. earlier d.w. spoke to. we asked him whether he expects to be extradited. we'll see. we leaving here since 3 years and 4 months this is the 3rd european there is weren't getting us. there as well or dropped or houston case if used by the german justice we'll see what will be the decision of the belgian just but in the case of our former clique they'd be say they decide these generally
9:14 pm
to refuse extradition. and probably that he's a possibility they will decide the same the same in our case i don't know we don't know exactly you know what does a loss of immunity mean here to talk about that i'm joined now by professor martin hager he's a professor of criminal law at the humble university here in berlin he has been following the case of jamal professor good to have you on the program as we've just heard it's not clear yet whether. and his colleagues will be extradited from belgium now that they've lost their parliamentary immunity help high are the chances that a belgian court could rule against their extradition. it's stuck easy to say you must keep in mind that the out to a consideration against him dispensed of over to accuse him for corruption and much more important for rebellion and. if you look in the european documents which are
9:15 pm
the basis of the work in the restaurant on stay in to belgium then just use that as a list of offenses for which 'd national guards are not entitled to the really fired up and criminality of. this offense this is corruption that means vocal option. the extradition is enormous but rebellion is not part of this that is what the this is an offense and we have the same pace 3 years ago in germany and a higher regional court of some hints decided it is possible to rip its 3rd item for corruption but not for rebellion because there is no single offense under german law similar to the vermillion in stay in and if the better forms of the same opinion then it is possible to is to bite him only for want of my no
9:16 pm
offense to the maximum to not feel 45. 15 years like the professor and you know as you clearly lay out there this is about a lot more than just a simple extradition case this case is highly politically charged how could that. influence the decision on extradition. within the framework decision of the european arrest warrant destino explicit norms which say this ringback it is not legal or not possible to sort out someone on the basis of for was a few reasons only i think it's an agreement to 'd the crown and not to provide something what if it is only a political who are political. but it could be a case of the political bankruptcy for example then it's not a problem that it's an on the criminal case the what if you can back room of most
9:17 pm
of who are political case ok professor hagar with humble university here in berlin professor we appreciate your time and your insights tonight thank you. ok let's bring you up to speed now on some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world russia has signed a deal to produce 10000000 doses of the sputnik the corona virus vaccine in italy the 1st e.u. country to reach such an agreement the drug is still being reviewed by the european medicines agency the united nations has condemned the police killing of 9 people during raids against suspected insurgents in the philippines rights groups say the government of president roderick go to charity is targeting activists to silence dissent manila says the operation was lawful but is promising a full investigation. u.s. special envoy for climate john kerry has held talks in brussels to discuss transatlantic cooperation to curb global warming the u.s.

on crowds. last night in yangon residents defied an 8 pm curfew taking to the streets to show solidarity with hundreds of protesters touched by a foreign cheese police tried stun grenades at the gathering support. finally the trapped protesters were in the mountain lave. when the sun rose protesters marched once again in mandalay they carried makeshift shelters but stayed for in the a few minutes a change in tactics to avoid another violent reaction from the author she's. currently. at night we couldn't sleep actually we don't want to go out but we're going out anyway. so we've been going out for 22 days and we haven't rested yet we're going out every day we keep fighting for the phone and hearers we will fight until we win. the military also attempted to suppress the spread of

information revoking licenses from media outlets and detaining journalists from that day one military. on terrorists. but we managed to report that on satellite and on social media. about that we already got this iraq that you know when you meet one it kate i just know you know that. it is going to rest and get most recently protesters say they will continue to gather across the country daily acts of defiance in the face of mounting risks to their lives and freedom. a supreme court judge in brazil has strong out corruption convictions against the former president lula da silva the a moment opens the way for lula to challenge brazil's current hardline president in next year's elections lou was hugely popular in the country until the economy
9:21 pm
slumped and he was then engulfed in scandal he says the charges were fabricated against him to sideline his front runner position in the $28.00 presidential race. are journalist sam kelly is in tel paolo good evening to you says he's been vindicated brazil's president also noddle says the court's decision is politically motivated who's telling the truth. well good evening it's a very subjective question right it depends on who's listening what side of the fence you sit and listen from the beginning the lou has always claimed and you know his so is his defense that he's he's convictions were politically motivated to stop him running again in the 2018 elections it's true that the cases against him presented very weak evidence and recently we've seen the judge that
9:22 pm
convicted him or so appearing to collude with the with the prosecutors in the case so you know of course he's saying that he's now being vindictive president johnson are on the other hand your way says that the supreme court is persecuting him and stopping him from passing laws whether it's to enable citizens that are more had than you know laws of this crime and so yeah it very much the pains are on the side of the fence you see it's certainly polarized brazil well how popular is lula right now in brazil i mean brazil is is still in the midst of this deadly pandemic could look could he become president again. well look of weeks alone so i mean brazilian politics let alone a year and a hopkins who the next election season starts box the leader again currently leads the polls the latest opinion polls by a small margin he has
9:23 pm
a rather large rejection right but his rejection rate lower than current president . what we're seeing right now with most of the respected analysts in brazil most of the police respective political consultancies say that does indeed have a good chance of being now to run for and win the presidency and that it's likely we would see his rejection rate full because right now in brazil. people are sick to be a sin if you want jobs and health care and the look back on today's times in the presidency when brazil grew and became more unequal when you know the more people there became big it became wealthier that you know you know quality fell the look back and that would have probably called memories compared to what's happening right now. are we likely to see in court again any time soon. that seems very unlikely for where we stand right now but like i say a week is
9:24 pm
a long time in brazilian politics let alone a year and often so with the next election season starts so. most people think it's unlikely as you can see the slow death of brazilians your school in the bureaucracy involved that he would stand any of the trial any time before next year when the election season kicks off basically i think that's very unlikely sam can we then with the latest from sao paolo tonight sam thank you thanks very much. in sports big news in german football national coach your welcome love will step down after this summer's european championships the 61 year old famously lifted the world cup in brazil but his side has struggled ever since and just as is the case with german chancellor angela merkel many say you're welcome love has overstayed his time at the top. germany's 2014 world cup triumph

enormous gratitude but at the same time with an unbroken level of motivation as far as the euros are concerned. it's all to the timing of his decision is good it means there won't be any speculation about contracts cheering the euros. now it means the decision has been taken and there is clarity and it could even give the team a boost knowing that it's the coach's last tournament and he'll want to make use of that this blocking on the liverpool's german club has already ruled himself out of the running to replace lurve if that's the question we want to ask if i were there before the job of the beneteau of quarter of the draw national team in the summer and all the euros being postponed from last year because of the coronavirus means there is no. well time for live successor to stand his off for a c. on the team ticket sowell cup kicks off in november next year the soon to be called
