i'm claire richardson welcome to the show the european union and its former member of the u.k. are embroiled in a new diplomatic spat this time over corona virus vaccines for dish prime minister boris johnson has denied blocking the sale of coke in $1000.00 vaccines to the e.u. this comes after european council president michel accused the london of imposing an export ban on vaccines produced on british territory. this also comes as the e.u. faces increasing criticism over its slow vaccine approach ouch. so let's take a listen to what boris johnson had to say in britain's house of commons. let me be clear we have not blocked the export of a single coded 19 vaccine or vaccine components this pandemic has put our

school on the same side in the bargain for global health we oppose vaccine nationalism in all its forms and earlier we asked our correspondent in london charlotte chiles some pill for her take on this latest war of words between the e.u. and britain over a vaccine supplies 1st will be clear on what we're talking about here this is in relation to the astra zeneca vaccine that's the bank seen that is produced the only vaccine that is produced here in the u.k. and this is the latest installment of a spat about the supply of that vaccine to the e.u. now the e.u. is painting a picture here of the u.k. essentially benefiting from a britain cruel as whereby a kid has a priority to reset to for it to vaccinate its population with doses of the vaccine produced in the u.k. and the u.k. here for its part is pushing back very hard on any claims that there is an outright ban on on the export of vaccines from the u.k. z.
12:03 am
mentioned just now the pushback is so strong that it's hope e.u. diplomat was summoned to discuss the claims that such a ban existed the e.u. pointing out that the data just isn't there at the moment to so look at how much the u.k. is exporting the vaccine meaning that it's muddy waters in the u.k. they pushing back very hard. that was our correspondent charlotte. well we are now more than a year into the pandemic and the mental and emotional strain of worrying about loved ones missing out on social lives school and our jobs has taken its toll many teenagers in particular are struggling to cope a quick heads up in our next report deals with young people seeking help for their mental health a reporter visited a hospital in belgium to see how the pandemic is impacting people their. long months of blocked and have been a vassal for many young people. teenagers in acute mental distress come to them in

i'm told me a lot of both thank you for joining us it's been just over 4 months since the conflict in ethiopia's teague ry region began yet details of events on the ground have been limited that's because the government restricted access to the area for humanitarian workers and the media still there have been reports of abuses by government backed forces against civilians among these are accounts of rape involving soldiers causing great physical and mental damage to their victims. she's just 20 games old and she's a rape survivor now she's found refuge in the safe house integrates capital mckellar here more than 20 women there trying to deal with their trauma they were raped by soldiers so was she assaulted in her home village before she fled on algorithm that night came to every house and forced that the men to leave the house i was left inside in my home then they were. you know mother teresa all jerry's

the killer survivors accuse both ethiopian and every trained soldiers of raping them in a single month the city's referral hospital has received more than $150.00 rape cases several women have come to get an abortion this woman has over 3 months pregnant she was raped while trying to walk to a family home outside of the killer when the fighting started. going to come out ahead of her recently tried to scare me you don't care about you they said we only listen to our urges i didn't say anything after that down what they wanted they left i put my clothes back on and took all my bags and went to the hospital struggling to cope doctors have been pressured not to make the cases public but one gynecologist did speak out. it was very it is very really blessed and there are many. getting pregnant as it allows president who is sexually transmitted

disease we supposed dramatics that i said this. to gray's interim government has promised to investigate the cases but says it is boosting the regional police force to try to bring the perpetrators to justice but many women are still trapped in their villages so there is great concern that the majority of looky says unreported and that alone with no trama. correspondent maria get. reports from mecca and she joins me now from. maria powerful painful testimony from the survivor you met how much help is there for the women who have been subjected to 1st horrific sexual abuse. there will throughout the region help very limited but in the hospital that i visited and so that's their referral hospital there is a small center called one stop center where women can go and make it was asian and
12:21 am
receive some medical treatment that they need but the main problem is that there's a massive shortage of medical equipment and medicine so it's very difficult for the nurses working there to actually provide the needed help to these women and the men within the hospital women who've been raped and got pregnant are able to get an abortion and receive some type of limited psychological support and the hospital also refers some of the women. that i show in the beginning of the report where they receive additional psychological support but also know that help is very limited especially in rural areas where there are many health centers that are not operating and have been looted and very. serious. aspect of the final point you made in the report did you get the sense that these rape incidents were far more numerous than what you saw and do you know how many women have actually suffered this abuse. well we don't have the total number of
12:22 am
women who have been raped and the main reason for that is it's believed that the majority of them are still trapped in their towns or villages that's because of lack of transportation because of the insecurity and also simply because of lack of money and a few numbers that i have been able to gather so that's 150 women in there for a hospital in micheli 174 women in the hospital and a grant that's about 3 hours north of me give an indication and give an indication also of the violence of these rapes but it's widely believed that many many more women are trapped in the rural areas and many of these women reporting the rape are accusing soldiers if you've been soldiers as well as every trim soldiers looks is of rape has been used as a weapon of war is anyone investigating this. so international organizations such as the united nations have repeatedly called for an independent investigation teams
12:23 am
to be allowed into the temporary region but so far no access has been granted as far as i know i met with the interim president. his name is more than a guy who was appointed by the met and he promised that his and his administration is going to investigate the rapes and he said that the rapes are not perpetrated by only one group of people but he also stressed that the security imperative in the region has been significantly weakened and he's there for trying to kind of strengthen the local police force but as far as an independent investigation goes there's been no progress so far and i guess one of the issues that the investigation would probably be looking at is when these incidents happened we have an idea of was it leon in the conflict always the something that's still going on. well i only talked to individual witnesses so it's very difficult to pin kind of a global picture but from what i have seen women have been raped as early as
12:24 am
november that's when the conflict started integrate and i also met a woman who'd been raped at the end of february and with that continuing a fighting in many areas have to agree there's still much that we don't know and so the problem is far from over. and just a quick one regarding your visit there was a revis the greys the region now more accessible to the media well allowing journalists in the region was definitely a big step forward but 1st of all it was only a limited list of journalists who were allowed into the region and there was no restriction per se no one was telling me you're allowed to go there or there while i was working but the problem that we faced is that several translators local translators who were working with international journalists were arrested and intimidated and so that kind of sent a message to other people they were working with journalists and to journalists as a whole so this was the main problem that we faced and that you know people that

business i'm joined now the one in berlin so happy you can join us. president joe biden's one point. dollar economic relief package has passed congress delivering the president's 1st legislative victory the house approved the sweeping along party lines sending it to the white house to be signed into law the bill will give financial aid to millions of families and businesses struggling under the pandemic but republicans have criticized the measures for being too expensive saying they inflate the national debt and funnel money to unrelated projects. our financial correspondent joins us from new york various now yes certainly for quite a few people this relief bill carries high hopes with it when will americans start to feel the benefits. well pretty soon and 3 times in charm we already got the 1st 8 pickets last spring in the amount of around to 2
12:32 am
trillion dollars followed by the 2nd pick it passed in december another 900000000000 dollars and now we get an additional $1.00 trillion one of the bigot's pieces of the pickets are actually $1400.01 time checks for americans making less than $75000.00 a here and the hope is that this money will be spent so get consumption going in the country and was that support economic growth they are estimates that this package actually could add involved one percent for growth for gross domestic product just was in this hearsay also had been some criticism let's say you and your partner you both make $75000.00 a year that gives you a household income of $150000.00 and still each of you would qualify for those $1400.01 time checks and clearly all of that is going to increase the debt load to a mess of fully in the united states but nobody really wants to think about the
12:33 am
debt at this point by the way joe biden probably will sign the pickets on friday and then on thursday joe biden will speak again and probably announce his build a better plan meaning another stimulus program probably focused for instance on infrastructure so a lot of stuff is happening at the moment but for a lot of american families who are still in pain and millions of americans who are unemployed they can expect to receive for this money soon and one final word on wall street as i'm standing in front of the new york stock exchange also read times as a charm for 3rd time this week we try to surpass 32000 points in that all johnson duster leverage also when trading close then finally we reached that milestone so a new record on wall street around all those news that we got about this money flooding the streets. carter there with some quick math for us thank you very much
