chance of america's conservative party and the c.d.u. is expected to come in 2nd probably around in the 10 percent area behind the greens and we expect possibly a repetition of this governing coalition to come out of this election but things could also maybe shift to a different set up were the other parties for example the social democrats or the business friendly f.t.p. . a result that would allow them to form a coalition with the greens and as we're talking about what could happen we actually have right here in the studio now the results have just come in some overturned michel or for a quick wrap of that i will give you the 1st prognosis in these exit polls and one must bear in mind that up to 50 percent of people are expected to have voted by mail ballots it will take a bit longer but the big story of the night already appears to be that there are significant gains for the greens particularly. only a slight gain but significant losses for i'm going to conservative c.d.u.
6:04 pm
party which of course was embroiled in a scandal. taking money for making deals with mosques with the german government for taking commission there and it looks like in london and in that which is about the size of croatia with a population of some $4000000.00 that the currently governing social democrats have made. significant losses for america to see if you party once again so we'll be talking a lot about the scandal that seems have had a real impact here but significant gains for the greens some class 6 percent this opens the option for particular the greens in the back which is the biggest state there's about the size of belgium we don't really expect any change in the lead there. on the state premier there is the overarching conservative political figure within the green. and he seems to have pretty much the choice who he wants to go
6:05 pm
into government with currently he is in government with i'm going to michael's c.d.u. the conservatives there site dent for the social democrats in that other state holding resolve actions there and there will be a much bigger question mark and what how that government will be formed so overall significant losses for medical c.d.u. significant gains for the greens with an eye of general elections coming up in september that's probably the way we're heading so with just some of those initial results there we're going to get more for you very soon julia can you tell us a little bit from the. what were some of the biggest issues that it seems that most impacted the election that voters were really thinking about when they went to the polls. well the coronavirus pandemic has obviously taking over much of the discourse also here and by the bag it's the state where the population sees that the government has acted pretty well in terms of handling the pandemic we see that
6:06 pm
impulse most people approve of the government's action here and have maybe had more problems with how things have been handled at the federal level so. government people i've spoken to here said they are worried about what the future looks like in terms of jobs but also in terms of going back to some sort of normality as soon as possible with germany at the moment seeing quite a slow vaccine rollout and still quite a hefty lockdown going on also climate is a topic here a climate because this is the big. important carmakers are headquartered here in the capital like mercedes and porsche and there is this conflict here between how to keep the auto industry going but also try to 'd meet climate goals and. premier here has positioned himself in
6:07 pm
a way that tries to combine these 2 issues and people seem to have appreciated that cars and climate definitely on the front burner very very big let's take a look a closer look at that state of berg before we get those official polls in just a few minutes that we were referencing just a bit ago now given the state's size and wealth it could be a bellwether for how things develop at the national level it's the only state in germany led by the green party in coalition with america conservative c.d.u. now that partnership could happen as well at the national level come september as a general election albeit with the conservatives on top now it's a major home by a major home to germany's important current. as we just heard from julia. and yet baumgartner has had a greens premier for a decade. and we have an early look at some of those projections
6:08 pm
right now from bob let's take a look at that the incumbent coalition the environmentalist greens with 31 percent chance america is conservative c.d.u. with 23 percent the opposition currently in parliament center left s.p.d. the social democrats 12 percent the business friendly f.t.p. the free democrats 11.5 percent the far right populist alternative alternative for germany the f.t. also 11 and a half percent other parties the socialist left party 3 and a half and others with 4 and a half percent so those are the numbers for. michelle anything more that we can kind of see with from those numbers well that there's a significant gain amongst the business friendly free democrats that the high of 8 are who are conservative force also in the coalition in the other big cost state of the varia they are doing particularly well they've kind of jumped into the political race all the unlikely to pass the threshold to actually get into
6:09 pm
parliament but this really is quite down to for the far right if. we have this debate raging here whether they should be under observation by state authorities or not and they currently have been classified now they've lost a shop down by some 3.6 per cent and that's what winslet kept the cuts from and this conservative voice within the greens was also up against the other side of the political spectrum about against this conservative in a traditionally conservative states now he's come out top and he now has the option open whether he wants to go into yet another coalition with i'm going to michael's can 7. to you if you now changes this to have an eye on the free democrats and maybe the social democrats as well he would be the 1st state permit to have tried and tested pretty much all 3 big options here because he's already been in
6:10 pm
government with the social democrat so very interesting focus group politics here to look at what is potentially possible at the national level this september and looking quickly. c.d.u. the greens seem to have held their own whereas the c.d.u. is suffered quite a bit what could explain that they're down 4 percent in the mark and. they are down even 5.8 percent according to these early exit polls i must warn but that is a significant dent in their performance at the ballot box there are 2 reasons for that as we just heard from judy a lot of the blame for the stove vaccination rollout here in germany is really seen with the central government so that could be part of it but quite clearly with just last weeks all conservative c.d.u. c.s.u. m.p.'s basically forced to sign
6:11 pm
a document saying that they didn't profit from the corona crisis that they didn't take commissions for doing some kind of deals or bringing to the health ministry together with some industry that could well have had a really destructive impact on the election performance and let's take a look at how those results are going to translate into seats in the state parliament. so the incumbent coalition the environmentalist greens $51.00 seats chance to get americans conservative c.d.u. $37.00 seats that would be enough to continue their coalition the opposition in parliament could be the center left s.p.d. with 19 seats the business friendly free democrats as the f.d.p. with 18 seats as well as the far right sharing also. those also an additional 18 seats so that is how the make up could be for bob. michel trying to square this for me because we're talking about how. it is
6:12 pm
a major car state major industry huge economic impact for for germany and it is being led by the greens for a decade now but the greens down down in the southern part of germany are very different in greens maybe elsewhere in germany explain that for us what what what is the greens party today especially as we look towards september where they could come out looking very very good on a national level well the green party and the posse around. and we've seen that what was missing that was the pro-business free democrats they're also doing pretty well and what it would be unthinkable at the national level is him leaning as conservative as the pro-business free democrats nationally but the greens may well do that so the greens. greens in the state of back and not that terribly close to what's happening at the national level right so julie let's turn back to you where you are there on the ground. what what impact are you know
6:13 pm
national issues really having in state elections you know we have the pandemic we have we have these scandals that michelle was referring to is that really what voters seem to be responding to or there are also state issues that maybe might not rise to the national level of attention. it seems this year that the krona virus pandemic has taken over a lot of more local issues that would have been more relevant in other years but i've spoken to some people here and they've told me that also so more local issues are important to them for example housing policy they want to see a more equitable distribution of housing and they want housing to be more affordable health care not only related to the coronavirus pandemic but also in terms of quality of hospitals and how they are looked after here and there's also other local issues that had an impact here in local elections regional elections before and are sort of important issues for example the 21 project it's a big project to overhaul the central station and the transport system here
6:14 pm
in basically rebuilding the station and changing where all the train lines go and put them underground that that was a big factor that also brought. to power in 2001 the greens were against this project the project is now going ahead and that is still very much debated here people go and protest the project every week even though it's still ongoing so it is a mixture this year of local issues and the corona virus pandemic being a very strong topic. and should guard we're going to leave you for now in the studio as we turn to the other state election happening today are a lot to make those exit polls have also just come in the vote there will be a crucial gauge of popular sentiment before september's general election also a southwestern state in germany has 3000000 eligible voters the conservative c.d.u. party is neck and neck with the center left social democrats now it's been the
6:15 pm
social democrats that have been solidly in charge of that state for a good 30 years currently under state premier model. and her personal popularity really has boosted support for s.p.d. which has otherwise struggled. were around the country and we can take a look right now at those exit polls from a lot today the incumbents center left social democrats the s.p.d. with 34.5 percent and the business friendly f.t.p. with 6 and a half percent the greens reading a few more points there now with 8 and a half percent percent while the opposition merkel's conservative c.d.u. party 26 percent and the far right populist with 10 and a half percent free voters are regional party 5 and a half percent in the socialist left party with 2 and a half percent others with 6 percent so lot of numbers lot of parties a lot of different colors to make up what can we take away from those results we've
6:16 pm
just seen today well the lot of key contenders have made significant losses to democrats despite the popularity of. have lost some 1.7 percent i'm going to see to you posses lost almost 60 percent according to these exit polls and there's a lot of posts about still to go through and also the far right if tea party has lost some 2 percent which is rather significant because they now understand a 10.5 percent so clearly the conservatives taking a hit and the greens making once again significant gains plus 3.2 percent at this very moment in time the i have not seemed to become a new political force that i would be presenting a real competition for to the far right party as they face this in a posse scandal in this continuing in a posse struggle of how far to the extreme they want to continue to shift there's a lot of party infighting going on right now so it's almost more interesting to see
6:17 pm
what happens at the party conference than what happens in individual elections because they come out of every party conference it seems a different party further to the right at this stage and certainly a lot of head scratching will be happening in the. going to machall c.d.u. party. i mean last it is seen as potential still as the more likely contender to end to about race to succeed i'm going to potentially is next in the next elections well he's not going to be celebrating tonight and going off of that you know he became he was voted by party party delegates to be the leader the new leader of the c.d.u. back in mid january and back then party officials say we're going to hold off on deciding who that chance or kind of it's going to be we're going to wait for the state election so now somebody stable actions are here what does that mean now for the c.d.u. it means that we will be hearing them talk about how state elections are very recent elections at they don't when you tell you a lot about the national level at the same time. is the state premier just like i'm unless it actually but has
6:18 pm
a much stronger majority in the state of very about to see the man seen as the key contender that it's really bad news at the same time he's the one who has a much bigger backing within those regional level function as the c.d.u. party and it's still a very very long way to go until some time after you so we're told that candidate is chosen and that will most likely also be along the national popularity that. the charts really popularity and also that we see ominous that fall behind. trucks of from opposite a from that area this moment a lot of time left to go to those general elections of temper to w.c. for the coeditor of the show here for will be there with us every step of the way thanks very much. i mean maher state television is reporting that martial law has been imposed over parts of the country's largest city young go on the news comes after the city saw heavy anti

within the police force you can see it in the way policing is carried out you can see it in the way that we have a poorly no conviction rates and charge rates for rape and sexual violence in the police have a role to play in that and you can see it in how poorly the police form when they have to investigate their own offices there is there is a super complaint produced by the center for women's justice which examines several cases showing time and time again in all sorts of different ways that the police just can't be relied on to be objective and honest about what's going on within the force i would also open up a conversation between women who feel betrayed by the police so that police get an understanding of what it's like and what to be a woman in the city hoping that the police who protect them and use that to and all the strategies and culture change there is desperately long overdue you within that institution now let's turn to some other stories making news around the world.
