this is home massive churches it's towers that pierce the clouds like skyscrapers or create a. contest of the cathedrals or people 12th d.w. . one year ago italy became the 1st european country to impose a coronavirus lockdown today italy's started shutting down yet again new cases are climbing hospitals are filling up a 3rd wave is hitting europe and the timing could not be worse with vaccination roll well it's across europe already stubbornly slow today more in you country suspended use of the astra zeneca vaccine over blood clot worries europeans have an abundance of caution tonight what they need more an abundance of shots in the arms
9:31 pm
i'm broke off in berlin this is the day. with the germany suspending vaccination with the astra zeneca vaccine as a precautionary measure we continue to be a very cool about the program and it's great to see it being rolled out in such a such speed across the across the u.k. that sanction against a country 19 doesn't refuse to answer many of the courses and the loss of trust in that that is leaving. less take will undoubtedly more depth analysis ensure that we did not reach his decision lightly it is always been clear to me that this is a decision for specialists not for politicians but it is. also coming up the war in syria 10 years of fighting have left a nation in ruin
9:32 pm
a people uprooted and a future so dark it already haunts the present now we have with us in tempe a move to the 'd biggest of the military crazy this is the 2nd world war many losses many of the current. composition of the i have to say that there is no life until the time. of our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states into all of you around the world welcome we begin the day with a question for europe when you find yourself in the grips of the pandemics 3rd wave what is the best way forward increasing the number of bats in nations or decreasing the number of vaccines well tonight much of the european union is fighting the coronavirus minus one major vaccine today germany france italy and spain joined the list of the e.u. countries suspending use of the astra zeneca corona virus vaccine on worries of possible blood clots astra zeneca responded by. saying that 17000000 people have
9:33 pm
already been inoculated here in europe with no evidence of a heightened risk of blood clots the world health organization also saying there is no leak and adding that countries should not stop using the back seat that's advice that the german health minister is not taking us for tone and then to keep up confidence in this vaccine we now have to give our experts in germany and the european union time to review this recent cases they must also clarify the question of whether the benefits of effects in nations continue to outweigh possible risks because one thing is clear non-blacks a nation also has serious health implications and that review process is what we're waiting on now but you see it's that was the german health minister speaking there let's take this now to professor paul hunter professor hundreds going to have you
9:34 pm
on the day as it stands tonight there is no evidence of a link between the astra zeneca bank scene and increased risks of blood clots career is that correct. number of cases this is being followed was that it seemed to be something called. genus bemis side strabo's which is pretty uncommon but when you're thinking about how many people that right across europe. you would certainly expect to see some cases chilly night shots people following that satish so dr how do you explain that if there is no colds will link here how do you explain what is happening here in germany in france spain italy and other european union countries. well i think bought body issues is the art something like this is being
9:35 pm
right people didn't get nervous and both. members of the public and indeed also medical doctors as well and i don't think there is a i hate fear that he had to. to allow that thing to go ahead when when these sorts of concerns are being right the problem is that not going to happen that that scene gives associated with a very clear risk of increased risk of infection death many times greater than what is being suggested by this association which masham lee and probably webster now to the causal you know want to take a listen to a possible explanation that was given earlier today take a listen the. virus the sun has come virus appears to affect the blood in a very characteristic way and craned course both this clotting and the
9:36 pm
bleeding we know that very well so. i would say the 1st thing before starting to pour the vaccine is to be absolutely sure that none of the cases were at least the majority of the cases don't have undiagnosed co that dr do you agree with this i mean could this all come down to people already being infected and not knowing it and then receiving the vaccine. that's certainly entirely plausible yes i mean we you know we know from the experience in israel at least i went to a certain extent in the u.k. there are people tend to get an increased risk of fit around the time of their nations largely because i did it on it's got the infection has that been going to one problem that i've seen in it or indeed because since
9:37 pm
they have the facts and i sort of tend to relax and or eat when they are no that is all that scene coming up they tend to relax thing in that following that it was fictions and that's been well described so it's quite plausible that such around the time of the vaccine people that r.h. what was being basing the infection and indeed got doesn't need to be investigated as a matter of priority if it hasn't already been done i mean it's fascinating that what you bring up there even in terms of public health policy you know we're hearing that this suspicion is being carried out as a precaution but it is without a doubt it's damaging the public perception of this vaccine people could refuse to get the shot and they could die as a result right yeah oh absolutely and i think that there are the statistics of that are absolutely very convincing and we know. but. the cases that
9:38 pm
have been occurring seem to be people who are forty's or thereabouts and the risk of dying if you get a an infection from the code at that age is wrapped about one in the past so about violent deaths that 1000000 people infected and that compares to what we all are like santa said suggest today at the risk. of an association of about 4000000 doses that the statistics are very much. towards actually carrying on with billy the fact city especially if as as many people suspect this is a see issue turns out. not to be real we understand that the european medicines agency plans to hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss this but it's not tonight not tomorrow on thursday does that seem problematic to you.
9:39 pm
well i think when you when you call one of these meetings they a lot of the people there are other things that they can get out of things that maybe just as important for the public balance that their countries and also by the time you meet you need to shed a lot of the information that you've got so that so that by the time people have started in the meeting that they're actually fully aware of what the information is not yet check things out gets the information that they have got say or. see meeting an hour or so sounds like a good idea but in reality what happens is that people aren't able to prepare adequately for the very important discussions that they will be hosting yeah definitely be an important meeting this coming thursday that is for sure professor paul hunter of the university of east anglia in the u.k. professor as always we appreciate your time in your insights tonight thanks michael . it is this vaccination

policy and the public's dismay and disappointment over policy you know when you combine the 2 the result can be devastating for the political party in power just ask the conservatives of german chancellor angela merkel on sunday her c.d.u. party was handed stinging defeats in 2 regional elections it is safe to say tonight that the c.d.u. has every right to panic national elections will take place in september and until america will step down after 16 years as chancellor it will be a major political change in germany and the voters looks set to punish those in power if the country's pandemic policy remains disaster number one germany super election. for chancellor merkel's conservatives into regional elections they significantly lost support among voters the c.d.u. is in crisis one day late in the frustration was crystal clear among the party
9:41 pm
leadership. we can clearly say that the regional election results are disappointing because a cd used. in. an election result is always a wake up call anyone who doesn't take note of the election results who simply overlooks them simply not understood the meaning of an election the c.d.u. was probably punished by voters for the painfully slow coronavirus vaccine rolled out nationwide. a facemask procurement scandal involving conservative lawmakers only made things worse. but one party's loss is another party's gain after winning the election in the wealthy state of bought back the greens were in triumphant mode on monday in. overall we see that momentum for the greens continues we started the super election strongly the trend of recent years was in 2021. photos and i know it's fun to watch similarly the social democrats were eager to
9:42 pm
highlight their victory in the state of ryan one that does this because on the election result especially. to the social democratic party as a whole. and we want to use the upswing to help ensure that we can lead a future federal government to provide a german chancellor on the subject are trying to stand for to regional votes and not necessarily a preview of what will happen in september when all germans go to the polls but they do provide clues about what voters throughout the country want what problems they see what parties they like and about what coalitions might be possible at a federal level for the c.d.u. in particular they are also a stark warning they have 6 months to recover before their biggest challenge whether they can hold on to power without time 11 o'clock or let's look at this now with our chief political editor. so am i reading this right with these
9:43 pm
2 regional elections the voters have put americans party on notice either find a solution fast or find your way out of power come september. it's not quite as drastic as that but at the same time these rizal lections on to role model for the whole country but then again they are too big to ignore those countries together their routes the equivalent of the size of belgium and the size of croatia so but what they have proven is that the greens aren't just having a very good ride with the vote is that they are getting increasingly emboldened and thinking big and also thinking potentially other compensations than what we're seeing in the current polls which suggested for months that the likely outcome of the next elections for the angolan that will see you continuing in the lead and the greens being the junior coalition partner while the greens are coming across not
9:44 pm
more senior at this moment in time and then america will see you is on the defensive over corona but also on that you know scandal of some m.p.'s having had to resign because they took cash for a brain jing trade in those surgical masks so they set me on the defensive and they don't even have the talk cans at the chance account is it taking them into these elections yet you know that's right these elections they've started the countdown to september when uncle americal plans to step down after 16 years in power and there really is no clear no definite successor to her is there. well her favorite and she does protest to marks over that is just the cane and the leader of the c.d.u. posse very recently but then he isn't that terribly popular across the board and stuff that this defeat is the 1st thing that happened body was in office and he's
9:45 pm
up against the most likely mouth of sudan who still blanks come out of the closet with really wants to add to the race but he is the more popular of the 2 although he too has been hit over corona recently and that decision we're told will be sometime after easter still quite a while off with the c.d.u. party still in limbo on which course it will take all right our chief political as a mechanic of the north on what is going to be an exciting election year here in germany michela thank you. it began as one of the arab spring xb oldest uprisings it became one of humanity's biggest crime scenes 10 years ago today in the blossoming of the arab spring people in syria began protesting against the rule of president bashar al assad in the city of durai 15 children were arrested for spring anti-government slogans and that sent
9:46 pm
people into the streets demanding greater human rights and democracy and the regime of bashar al assad responded with a brutal crackdown that would morph into an all out war where than half a 1000000 people have died more than 5 and a half 1000000 syrians have become refugees 6000000 were displaced within syria losing their home with nowhere to go. it started with a glimmer of hope in spring 2011 the people took to the streets of syria after watching the arab spring in other countries they decided to demonstrate for political reforms and democracy in their own country. but their story ended differently. president assad's regime brutally struck down the protesters. but they fought back a rebel army formed this peaceful protesters joined forces with army does
9:47 pm
a battle lines were drawn. up one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 21st century began in syria. other world powers used the conflict for their advantage to spread their influence in the region. moscow and tehran supported a silent while the united states and turkey gave their support to the rebel troops . the assad government regained control of syria but their victory was blunted. the country lay in ruins. it's the civilians who have suffered most since the beginning of the war at least half a 1000000 syrians have been killed more than 6000000 syrians have left the country another 6200000 a still displaced within syria more than half of them children 10 years later for the people of syria peace is still
9:48 pm
a long way away. well the list of the 5 years in syria is long and bloody tonight we want to focus on one of the most prominent human rights lawyer and activist. she was kidnapped by armed men in 2013 to this day her whereabouts and her fate remain a mystery. investigative unit has been retracing her steps and this is what they discovered. my name is there. you are from the oscars. when protests erupted across syria in march 20th lebanon rights activist rosin said to me i was on the frontline she was key to revolutionary efforts across the country beside her also close friends must know we should. we need the human rights lawyer in paris is. because. for me the most important aspect
9:49 pm
of president's personality is a rejection of injustice and willingness to do anything to fight injustice. i when the assad regime responded with a bloody crackdown arresting thousands of activists rather than make sure the world would know. she became a key stores she had the sort of softness almost frailty to her when you matter of the beginning and you like how she doing this very dangerous job. and then as soon as you spoke to her you immediately discovered the sort of steely courage and principles. in 2013 resin sledge regime had to mask this for duma a town that would later be dominated by the hardline militant group jaish and the slow. present launched women's initiatives for for the rule of law and documented human rights abuses including those committed by armed rebels.
9:50 pm
all that made her the competitor for jaish al islam to its control to its ideology and its desire to establish an emirate a caliphate. rather than was targeted several times a bullet left at her doorstep and none of this letter obtained by d.w. threatening her life the words i will kill you repeated 5 times a trusted confidant not even who or asked her to leave too much she responded the next day saying i am not going to move we did not do a revolution lose thousands of source so that such monsters can come and repeat the same unjust history. these people need to be held to account just like the regime. on december 9th 2030 in armed men stormed her office there directed rather than together with her husband and 2 fellow activists after years of investigation human

rights lawyer wishing to steam are confident that jaish al islam are responsible they gave us exclusive access to their findings with the additional witness statements we collected in syria and turkey corroborate that reson was held by the islamists before the trail goes cold. we've confronted high ranking members have to actually slam but they strongly denied any involvement in the attacked however educational investigation is underway by the french war crimes unit here in paris and a former top official of the group has already been arrested in connection with the case martin darwish hopes that the investigation of the finally bring clarity for him presence absence is reminiscent of the pro-democracy movement in syria. the fate of rozanne and her colleagues resembles that of the civil peaceful movement that tried to create a moral eternity for syria. they were crushed between the regime and these islamist
9:52 pm
groups in tibet in the end terry and as well as the. 8 years after roseanne and her colleagues disappeared their fate remains one of the great mysteries of the revolution but friends and relatives have not given up hope that one day they will know the truth. and with me now is my colleague. use investigative unit an excellent story fascinating but when you look at the time it's been 7 years since what result of her colleagues disappeared in your opinion is there any chance of finding them after all this time finding them alive. it is a tough question and it's very tough to answer. we there are credible indication that she was held alive some years after
9:53 pm
their protection of her her husband and her her fellow activists and we have evidence we have reviewed evidence that she was held in prison. do we know if she's still alive no we don't right now we have to really follow up some some more leads. we have to corroborate information and this is sometimes really challenging because actually there are a lot of wrong leads out there and we're trying to find more witnesses and investigate to really at the end shed a little bit more light on the fate of you and sort of the beginning of this segment the list of pro-democracy activists is long and it's a bloody one in syria why did you choose to focus on results toward i mean she is one of the most prolific figures of the sewer of illusion she helped to build democratic structures she tried to document human rights violations and to
9:54 pm
understand her story. helps a little bit to understand. the fate of the democratic movement of syria and to see how it was in a way crashed between the us had regime on one side and these radical islamist forces on the other side who in a way kidnapped the revolution and followed their own islamist agenda we heard a new report that was on was against a group called. this right. tell us more about. just as some has been one of the most power. full armed opposition groups and they are still operational in syria interest. was abducted they had their main bases and by for. later they also fought the

islamic so-called islamic state but they also forward other rebel groups because they really wanted to gain more control and by doing that they reportedly committed grave human rights violations we are talking about torture we are talking about false disappearance we're talking about massacres and what we know it's not that much because these violations haven't been documented that much and. on the contrary you the islamist groups they were part of the international peace talks and this coincidence really is also our attention and we really wanted to look further into it. because excellent reporting thank you very much and as you heard w. is continuing to investigate the disappearance of resigning and her colleagues if you know anything about their whereabouts or the circumstances of their abduction

10:01 pm
a wake up call ahead of the federal elections this coming september and international condemnation of me and mars military following sunday's violence in the ngong tonight the army has imposed martial law in parts of the city. i'm burnt off it's good to have you with us in the race to vaccinate this is not what europe needs now nearly a dozen countries including germany france italy and spain have suspended use of the astra zeneca corona virus vaccine over fears the shots could cause blood clots however both the european medicines agency and the world health organization say there is no evidence linking the vaccine to clogging proff. another setback in an already troubled vaccination campaign germany france italy and spain
10:02 pm
became the latest european countries to stop administering the astra zeneca vaccine over fears it causes blood clots fatone and stuff to keep up confidence in this vaccine we now have to give our experts in germany and the european union time to review these recent cases they must also clarify the question of whether the benefits of vaccination continue to outweigh possible risks and say just that's mukesh reason and i know because one thing is clear not vaccinating also has serious health implications and that review process is what we're waiting on now. french president manuel mccall said his government would await a statement by the european medicines agency due on tuesday before deciding if the vaccine is put back into use. that it is you know he ate a piece on the decision that was taken in accordance with our european policy is to
10:03 pm
suspend the astra zeneca vaccination as a precautionary measure in the hope that it will be resumed quickly if the european medicines agency allows it see livy. the e.m.e.a. only last week declared that there are no indications that people who have received the astra zeneca vaccine are more likely to develop blood clots british prime minister boris johnson who is quick to dismiss concerns over a vaccine that has already been administered to over 11000000 people in the u.k. we have one of the toughest and most experienced regulators in the world they see no reason to discontinue the back to nation program for her and they are plenty of the vaccines that were currently using either of the vaccines that are currently using the u.k. vaccination drive is racing ahead of the e.u. efforts to inoculate its population against covert 19 with an increasing number of european countries putting their astra zeneca vaccinations on hold that lead is
10:04 pm
likely to grow. or is more now i'm told by our political correspondent so i mean young and even to you saw in me the timing of this could not be worse how significant is this decision. well i think the german government's decision to suspend the astra zeneca vaccine and potentially really is a major setback for the vaccination program here and could really slow things down and of course germany's vaccination campaign has been criticized for being slow and the government says it's about making sure doing the checks and in that way potentially increasing public confidence and but i think this is another example of germany's cautious approach on vaccination they are being cautious as 1600000 people in germany have been vaccinated with the ask astra zeneca substance and they've just been 7 cases of problems that what they're worried about as you
10:05 pm
mentioned is blood clots of but it's not clear whether they've got anything to do with the vaccine they might they might not have the government says well in that case let's just check it but a lot of politicians are saying well you know maybe we could check it and at the same time continue with a vaccination because it's really important that people get vaccinated yeah i mean at the moment germany is down one major vaccine in this fight against the pandemic so how is this going to affect the vaccination program going forward. well the vaccination rollout is being done here by the regional states so they suspended that for now it's not being distributed around the country they say they're hoping for the european medicines agency to carry out these checks and maybe make its results known within the next few days and it's very much hype they do that one problem that arises what about people who've already had one dose of astra zeneca will they get a 2nd dose of a different vaccine that could be
10:06 pm
a problem because those other vaccines are in short supply of course and also after a story like this it's hard to see people really developing full confidence in astra zeneca and that may be a real problem in the months ahead that's right public trust is definitely a problem now some in young's work force in berlin simon thank you. i have more i want to bring in dr who has shown ray she's the deputy director of the institute of viral logy at the charedi hospital here in berlin dr it's good to have you on the program but what do you make of this decision to suspend the use of the astra zeneca vaccine 1st of all as pointed out in the trade. because in every measure but if you look closely at the numbers of the so-called side effects those trump olympic events that have been look serious then you will realize that there is no i have
10:07 pm
frequency of those jungle each effects in the vaccinated population in comparison to so if that has not been vaccinated that means that most likely at temporal the link but not causal connection between both. events so why suspend use of the vaccine then. it's as i say it's a precautionary measure so death being reports to the institute for example ensure many that brought a blood clotting in brain vessels has been obsessed and so they have to another i said and say do it very fast shoot it do it very fast because it's not like snape means as you already also have said that people are dying

economy back in order how big a role does astra zeneca play in this overall scheme well as you say i think it's clear the vaccination will be crucial regarding the timing and the speed of which we get through the pandemic and the economic damage that it's dumb and i think. is a key factor in the bottle it's the cheapest in many ways of the virus the. of the vaccinations that have already been approved it's also the it's the easiest to transport and it's the one that seems to work best in developing countries so it's very very important that it remains part of of of the package of things that we have to do with the coronavirus and this is one area i think where the virologist and the where the scientists and the economists really agree that it's going to take a package of of different vaccinations to to really start bringing an end to the pandemic and astra zeneca is going to be a big part about. in the e.u.

have been somewhat at odds even before this happened there's been quite a history of china to what's been going on well this has been going back now a few months astra zeneca made a lot of promises early on about deliveries which it didn't manage to meet and then on top of that came there were it didn't meet its promises to the e.u. but it did meet and to britain on this call some bad blood on it there was a lot of there was some to and fro between the e.u. and. seneca about this since then they've they've they've provided quite a lot of vaccines i think germany is currently sitting on around 3000000 vaccines and 1400000 of those are astra zeneca so so everyone is hoping that this will will suddenly be this will only be a brief high asia because the vaccination program needs to continue. countries in africa are going to be looking to the e.u. to see what they decide because it's very important you know we had earlier hiccups with them with astra zeneca in south africa because it wasn't seen as being as

effective against a variant there and countries like the democratic republic of congo they also stopped delayed there is in response to what the e.u. is doing so we really need to get the situation resolved as quickly as possible i think if this valuable part of the vaccination program is to continue and is also shows a lot about how supply lines of. our supply lines of really on supply chains have come to dominate this whole aspect of the of the bottles so against the corona virus so i think we're going to see now is an increased effort to end this current delay and get the vaccines back out there all right we'll be watching businesses clifford conant with me in studio thank you so much. and we go now to some of the other global business stories making headlines. germany's id code will produce the single dose johnson and johnson corona virus vaccine over the next 3 months vaccine

focused on tesla when it comes to electric vehicles will the company be easily caught. well i mean there's no question that the market in general is getting more crowded here in the united states for example if you look at general motors or ford g.m. they're planning in the next couple of years to a mall as they go all into electric vehicles if you look at the market share of tesla that has already dropped them in you were all been in the united states it has been quite dim stable in asia and if you look at the stock price i mean the stock was on fire last year actually gaining about 700 percent but since then the stock has dropped around to 25 percent and having that said i mean 1st of all yes the market share in some reasons from tesla is dropping but overall the market is definitely still growing and if you look for example the future plans of tesla

they're planning this production facility in germany for in sin and was that they could bring the cost down quite a bit because they don't have to ship the cars by ships and you more and so that will bring costs down and i've seen some reports that eventually tesla might be even able in europe to offer the vehicles for 20 percent less so tesla definitely can survive in this environment but that they're going to lose more market share at this point at least seems to be quite likely as more and more companies in europe in the united states and at some point probably also in asia will enter this market. in new york thank you. well the corona virus pandemic has shaken economies for more than a year now another illness however has vexed farmers over the past year african swine fever it's decimated pick stocks in china and recently it's hit germany very
