this is day 8 of a new news live from berlin and world leaders condemning the bloodshed in me and military forces there kill schools of people they include in children as they crackdown on dissent in the deadliest day since they saved our last months also coming out hundreds of thousands of driven from their homes in mozambique and suspected islam as militants seize a town that's home to a key energy project. class anger on the streets of istanbul thousands of women rallying against the turkish government's decision to pull out of a domestic violence treaty.
9:01 am
i'm rebecca ritter's welcome to the program and maher is facing condemnation from across the world after dozens of people were killed on saturday by security forces children are among the dead 12 nations released a joint statement denouncing the bloodshed which happened on man on forces holiday it was the deadliest day since pro-democracy protests began in early february more than 400 people have been killed since the army seized power from civilian later on sounds ficci. and with dave going around is following that story from kuala lumpur and joins me now and dave this is quite an alarming escalation of force the military clearly trying to deter those protesters through sheer if it will it work . this movement against

a military coup is not going to stop both sides are basically just part of me here and the demonstrators just serious at all the killings more than 100 people killed yesterday they're furious of the one time raids in the way this military is trying to terrorize the civilian population now today we're seeing some of the people who were killed yesterday more protests today at spots across the country now demonstrators have changed some of their tactics in recent weeks you're seeing more demonstrations taking place before dog some demonstrators tried hoping that avoids confrontations with the military but then other demonstrators have radicalized and want to take on the military head on some of them have resorted to. makeshift rifles molotov cocktails to throw at the military and then what's really been the most successful part of this movement against a military coup so far is going to continue and that's the work stoppage so many government workers using to work for this military government that's been the most

successful part not well all. some think is having the opposite effect than the sort of planned town but there's also been a lot of international condemnation after the after saturday's bloodshed and calls for more but is that enough will it change anything. it is not going to change the directions of the military generals because this has absolutely no moral compass and as bad as yesterday was with more than a 100 people killed it could get far worse keep in mind this is the same army to me i'm army that killed in a span of a few months according to un investigators more than 10000 rohingya muslims just a few years ago and if the who decides are going to have to go get that hard against the general population i mean m.r. then they are prepared to do it this international condemnation is not going to get the generals to change course and we've been hearing that talks are on the way that could lead to the resistance forming its own me i how would that work and where
9:04 am
would the troops for this so-called resistance come from 1st you need to understand a little bit context of the country here along the outer edges you have these ethnic minority states and the people here they're tired of this highly centralized government the amar that's made up primarily of the majority of the group the burmese calling shots across the country and in the sense that when already states they've long wanted more autonomy more say over their own internal affairs and in the 7th already states there are armed ethnic groups that have weapons that have been fighting battles against the myanmar army for decades now discussions are underway that could potentially unite some of these armed ethnic groups into a national resistance army now there's a lot of things that need to be worked out for that to happen but even if it does happen they're still going to be greatly outnumbered by the mi amor army which has more than $4000.00 soldiers and out resources but it could still cause a lot of problems for the army. the nice signs of the situation quieting down any

a calling for the move to be reversed but. we're not afraid of you and we will not comply shot the women at this demonstration in istanbul. protesting against what they see is the government acting against women. couldn't you know i think the number of women being murdered is growing we've hit absolutely rock bottom they should be talking about how best to finally implement the istanbul convention but instead they just dropped it it's unbelievable you know. despite a dramatic increase in femicide in recent years turkey has pulled out of the convention the international treaty is intended to protect women and sexual minorities from abuse. president richard better one withdrew in a surprise decree that he shrugged off accusations from legal experts and the opposition groups that only the turkish parliament can make that decision. our decision is final just like back when we entered into the agreement we're not leaving it no one else should get involved. in those. analysts

9:09 am
a crackdown comes as the opposition tries to bring more people out onto the streets hoping to kickstart mass demonstrations like those saying after claimed victory in a disputed presidential election in august. and it was released yesterday after 5 hours in detention and earlier i asked him about the challenges of reporting from belarus well the most important thing is that the russians are very wary of speaking of showing their faces or going on camera for reasons we've seen in recent months people being put in prison being fined losing their jobs for speaking out people were still very much more open about expressing their opinions the numbers of people going out some certain. so big that it was difficult for the regime to you know keep tabs on everyone but now big to be in the months since those protests we've seen them coming after people who went out to want to demonstrations so that's very typical local journalists face far greater than we do as foreign journalists people who are just going to jail for 2 years doing
9:10 am
a live stream from protests another journalist has gone just 6 months revealing the protesters who lost their lives were not drunk as claimed by the police so it is a very difficult situation and the question really is is journalism illegal in this country even people who have the british and i do which is pretty restrictive perhaps to try and limit what you can do to try and have something they can then threaten to take off you even if you have that even if you're wearing blue if you're going by would have rules it still seems that going about your job is pretty much impossible and they want to keep us in our apartments off the streets and talking to you now just from our living room zone. also these detentions clearly having an impact what impact will they have on the protest movement can we expect to say more protests in the coming days. i think the protests will go on they're going to be decentralized and it's all going to be about for the opposition trying to keep people so spread out across city that it's going to be difficult for the

police to make mass arrests we were at the scene things like people. reaching fireworks in their balconies. kind of. decentralized meetings online and people hanging out flags things that are easier to do short bigger demonstrations of some of the summer that we saw where you know hundreds thousands of people out streets that's going to be very difficult but time and time again people here tell me that even even in these restrictive rules are stacked against the opposition that the government isn't respecting their own rules that even their rules in terms of the press in terms of freedom of assembly they're not basically it's all just open to their. to their decision in the moment and there is really no more structure so i think most people will be convinced that this needs to go on because they are seeing the government isn't sticking to its and walls. correspondent nicholas connick connally who was detained for several hours in mink for doing his

above all else in the evening other people take sleeping pills so they can sleep i said to my comfy chair char never thing off look at my clocks listen to the ticking and watch the hands moving and then i feel so calm and relaxed i can go to bed and sleep suddenly off. having a massive collection of time pieces requires plenty of patients not least the rhondda clocks cleaning effort but so too the painstaking business of researching them twice a year for daylight savings. back in the day when i was still a bit hectic i used to have cloth parties i invited friends around between 2 and 3 am we changed all the clocks but that was when i was young and beautiful you'll never do it all alone at this concert i mean there. was no one to help the house to get started on the job 5 days before the clocks change.
