windows and onto roofs to reach safety rescuers are still trying to reach passengers trapped in some of the carriages. correspondent lilian gang has the latest for us from taipei william dozens of deaths have already been confirmed by police what more do we know we know that most of the deaths and the serious injured are all in car 78 and that's initially where the inspectors believe the truck hit the head of the car ate the train and caused some of its trains to hit the wall in kano and then called there to drill in the end. so what is the situation then right now william. so rescuers are still trying to evacuate those that are still trapped in cars than in england where we know a lot of the bodies are still lying on the ground according to some of the
9:03 am
passengers who got out safely and then also at the same time they were still trying to clear the carriages because as we know the training of gearing imports in train rail line goes down the north and the south in time once east coast and this is the 1st day of a long weekend where a lot of the passengers are expected to be relying on the roadway to go home to the eastern part of taiwan so they cannot. clear out all the trains from the tracks in time it could create chaos for this long weekend. and obviously there's been a human toll here as well just just walk us through how this happened we understand that a truck caused the accident didn't. rise so information right now shows a driver of the truck which is conducting some construction nearby. not part of the
9:04 am
truck properly parked that he parked the car on a slope and he did not hold the brakes properly and then the truck unfortunately slight down the slope and then ran into the railway and then at the other around the same time the train was trying to enter into the tunnel and then so the truck hit the head of the car 8 where the conductors room was there and then that called the whole train to the rail in the end the calls one of the deadliest accident in decades in taiwan and right now we also know that unfortunately the conductor is confirmed dead as one of the 36 people and information that he just recently got married so this is yet another very very disastrous in the areas that story that we're seeing here right now today in taiwan that is so heartbreaking early on and i think we're probably going to get to learn some more of those stories you mentioned the current death toll is that expected to rise. yes unfortunately i think that
9:05 am
number could be going up more and more of the very seriously injured passengers are still being treated in nearby hospitals and a lot of them have injuries that could threaten their lives later on so the next few hours will be very critical and i think the numbers could go up over the next few hours. william yang the joining us from taiwan and william we'll continue to check in with you thanks for your report and thank you. in other news me on mars military has shut down wireless internet services across the country until further notice amid protests against the junta's takeover members of the un security council have expressed deep concern about the rapidly deteriorating situation and have strongly condemned the escalating violence against peaceful demonstrators hundreds of civilians including women and children have been killed

in the crackdown and thousands of people have fled into neighboring thailand. after 2 months of daily street protests a symbolic act brings new hope to the cause protesters in cities around me and burned the 2008 constitution a constitution that was designed by the military opponents of the one to have declared void and have written an alternative charter but with members of the democratically elected government detained finding a diplomatic resolution is becoming increasingly difficult elected leader uncensored she now faces new charges if convicted she could be barred from ever holding office again. her lawyers have only been able to see her briefly via video link. we did not feel i'm not able to say whether she is aware of what is happening in the country due to the circumstances yesterday and today a court she may know or not i can't guess. the amount of money it was good to

see her today and yesterday via conferencing she is healthy. the u.n. special envoy for me on my has urged the un security council to act she wanted the country is at risk of falling into civil war activists on the ground say the situation is dire we kind of oppression from the military and continuous effort from our forces it is very. civil war you know must try and i i would like you know a few to the united nations to do something about it because we could see a lot of sanctions coming from that you carry them the united states and japan and other european 'd countries but they hasn't be any form sanctions coming from that un. oh oh many demonstrators now believe an alternative force is the only way to return democracy to me and my several of the

country's minority ethnic groups already have armed militias some have denounced the coup saying they will protect their territories and protesters. you're watching news still to come on the program german tourists flock to the spanish island of majorca for the easter holidays despite coronavirus travel warnings just how risky is this trip to paradise. but in the meantime elsewhere in the world u.s. president joe biden has held his 1st cabinet meeting at the white house biting is the gathering to promote his new 2 trillion dollar infrastructure plan the senate confirms the full cabinet last week biden has held it as the most diverse in u.s. history. dutch prime minister mark rich has survived one of the biggest political fights of his decade in power he's narrowly survived a no confidence vote over claims that he lied about the coalition talks were to has

not been forced to resign but his chances of forming a new government have been dealt a serious blow. pope francis has become celebrating the christian holy week of easter by leading a mass in st peter's cathedral in rome at the pontiff skipped the traditional service commemorating jesus last supper other events over the weekend will be restricted. the world health organization has criticized the speed of the coded 19 vaccine rollout in europe saying that it is quote unacceptably slow the number of new cases across the region has increased for the 6th consecutive we can just 10 percent of the european population has been given their 1st vaccination dose. of the warning from the comes and the e.u. fails to meet its vaccination targets and distribution schedule by the end of march
9:10 am
to us from copenhagen we have dr siddhartha he is the europe regional advisor for the agency's vaccine preventable diseases and immunization program thank you so much for joining us what do you think has gone wrong with europe's vaccination program. so thank you so much and good morning from opening and so let me start by telling you that 47 of our 54 member states and territories started to roll out the vaccination 19 back seeing program and also 148000000 those as you know minister already have their children there is a testament that people are waiting to receive the vaccines and documents that make it their or their force to roll up the vaccine and to provide the benefits that see to its population having seen that i think it's a moment for all of us to start looking into how this can be done much more faster
9:11 am
and much more efficient all the way forward right but you know the w.h.o. you know which you work for says that this has been unacceptably slow on the continent i mean that those that's that's a pretty strong statement there what could happen if the vaccination continues at the current pace are you worried. i think. if you look in the average of the countries earlier device the nation it's a stock from less than one percent of the population to more than 30 percent population covered obviously it's these you can see that there are a lot of being a snob catching up at the same pace and every time it's with a slow rollout happening we do understand that not all of them to stock at one point of time but they're either nowhere to moment not to see that this can go further that what's going to happen as you have are as the roller becomes slow as allowed at the pace that every country and they're catching up we are just
9:12 am
prolonging the pandemic bassy is unappreciated too which is every level for us so that the population can benefit from that that slow half of the time to make art and then they've been prolonged is one thing that they want is if the rollout is happening slowly we are allowing other valiants of concern. farsighted a virus trying to find its own way to escape this entire. tools that we have just for along the pandemic. so what is the recommendation and how do you do you see an opportunity for europe to to swiftly improve its the rollout of the taxa nation program and make it more efficient. yeah exactly thank you i think the most important thing that all of the countries need to do is just start looking into the vacillation coverage on its target to publish and groups that have started
9:13 am
their high proud to be of the health care vote because people are more than 65 years of age all countries need to start looking into the drivers and barriers in within these population grew while he's holding them or holding them together that affects the nation coverage in each of these population groups while there has duff once you look into the data those are the videos of the interest of looking into what the causes that these vaccinations take in this population group is not hard ones that their knowledge is being that they need to start tailoring interventions allowing them to improve their vaccination those countries let's talk a little bit more about those interventions specifically because you know one thing is is the production of logistics of simply getting the vaccines you know getting them to the facilities and then into people's arms another thing is this back in skepticism in european heads of governments seem to be in constant disagreement
9:14 am
over which vaccine is safe to use we saw that you know most recently of course with the blood clot issue that has been reported with regard to astra zeneca and the abundance of caution that that many that some leaders are using to what extent is this part of the problem. thank you so i think though of one thing let me let me then break this into 2 parts one is when people here listen to these type of concerns people may have a beef or a perception is extremely important that governments signs that scientists research and developers are open to the population being more transparent about what we know what we don't know and what is coming i think this will instill trust in the population about this new novel preventing vaccine and the people skepticism should also be seen with the lens that this is their health seeking behavior they are
9:15 am
trying to make a conscious informed choice what is important is that we the people get access to trustworthy and and reliable information that can come from the ministries of l. they can come from organizations that have that are these information out there and population it to get access to we are also seeing people's perception or skepticism if you want to say about it in other that since this is not the only vaccine that we have seen what this is jimmy important at this particular time is that we love we listen to what people want and he vaccine safety is one of the congressman we share what we know at this part of tough thank you so much dr siddartha. w.h.o. europe regional adviser for the agency's vaccine preventable diseases and emunah zation program we appreciate you trying out joining us here i did any of this thank you so much pleasure talking to you. thousands of germans are heading to the

spanish island of majorca this year for spring break for many it's an annual tradition but in the middle of a pandemic chancellor angela merkel is warning against it occasionally in times of the coronavirus is controversial as it is considered a so-called pandemic driver to debbie a reporter young philip schultz finds out from tourists and locals whether all the fun is worth the risk slowly but surely playa de palma is filling up with tourists again this is where most germans who book a trip to majorca over easter choose to stay restaurant owners are policed every day more beach bars open up their outdoor terraces but it's not just the beach that's popular activity has picked up at doctors' offices as well starting this week tourists must get tested for coronavirus before returning to germany.
9:17 am
you have various options you can make an appointment at the airport then you don't have to wait at all but you pay more as far as i know there are also 2 other places near here where you can take a test so personally i don't think it's all out to be honest we won't be doing this again it was nice to get away for a few days but the hoops we have to jump through to return and the fear that comes with being tested is too much what if it comes back positive the whole thing is just exhausting and. despite virus fears the island expects more than 40000 german guest this easter but things look completely different in my glue from just a few kilometers away normally this location is firmly in the hands of british vacationers. but unlike the germans they're not allowed to travel at the moment. those who do face hefty fines so the mood in the town is clogged. 50 to 60 percent of the businesses here will have to close completely. it's simply
9:18 am
become impossible to pay rent without any revenue. right now the infection rate on me or careen mains low but it has been slowly rising some fear that the island will soon close again completely. fall rodriguez comments on the back and forth between reopening tourist attractions and re imposing restrictions with these biting characters in new york has local newspapers for him the pandemic has shown that mass tourism on the island is a thing of the past it's like a medicine the right dose is great but too much is dangerous and used to work well on the island but then suddenly 5 times as many tourists came many in the tourism industry are exploited in the eighty's it was better less tourism leads to a better quality of life. in the meantime several hotels on the island have already being converted into quarantine accommodations and this is
9:19 am
where some german vacationers who tested positive are staying they are required to wait at least 2 weeks before they are allowed to return to germany let's have a look now at the mood in germany when it comes to the pandemic poster in france has the map has just published its latest deutschland trend a monthly nationwide survey the main finding the vast majority of people in germany are deeply unsatisfied with the government's pandemic policy is only 19 percent are very satisfied or at least satisfied with the political management of the crisis but a stunning 79 percent are less satisfied or not satisfied at all. political correspondent benjamin alvarez gruber is joining us it seems as if the mood benjamin within the past 4 weeks has toppled completely absolutely the mood has changed and not just over the past 4 weeks back in december
9:20 am
still a majority of germans approved of the government's handling of the situation in generally though we saw over trend and also a negative trend that has been increasing to the point that now 4 out of 5 germans just said 79 percent of germans are not happy with the way the government is dealing with the pandemic and it's especially interesting if we compare this figures of this new poll that was just published with the ones of april of 2020 of last year back then the government in all florida is reacted quickly enact it and restrictions also to prevent the spread of the virus and back then 2 thirds of german still approved of the measures of the government something that has clearly changed one year later so the big question why are germans so dissatisfied with the government's pandemic management let's take a little bit deeper and then we got reaction from benjamin here are the 3 main reasons that pollsters identified by far the biggest point of criticism is the
9:21 am
german vaccination strategy 83 percent say it's a failure 74 percent complain about the handling of schooling and child care and 72 percent think that the government is not explaining its policies well enough benjamin vaccine schooling political communication the voters seem to have a point there when it comes to being unsatisfied. absolutely they seem to have a point there in germany sluggish vaccination campaigns had yet another setback a few days ago after germany decided to restrict the use of the vaccine to people over 60 with people and 60 still being able to get the job after the doctor's discretion but it's not only this vaccine that has been causing troubles here in germany it's a buy the vaccine is delivering them it's also approving them and we've seen also a bureaucracy that's hampering the already slow vaccine dr in germany when it comes
9:22 am
to education when it comes to school it's important to know that the federal states that decide when and how schools can reopen saw a lot of parents there are frustrated they want clear communication they want to be able to plan how the return of their children to school will look like and when it comes to communication of course is one of the examples that people are talking a lot about 001 said this contradiction that there are several restrictions here in germany but people still can travel for example to palma the more your car to a spanish island to have holiday there and the other one of course is the remarkable u. turn by the german chancellor who reversed a measure that was announced just earlier about this measures on easter let's talk more about those restrictive measures to fight the pandemic because polling indicates that people in germany largely fall into 3 camps 24 percent say the restrictions go too far 24 percent say they are adequate whereas 48 percent say the
9:23 am
restrictions don't go far enough so benjamin exactly as many voters think that the restrictions are adequate or even going too far as i think they don't go far enough what does that division mean politically. it's right with half this division almost half of germans want also strict a locked arms there are following the demands of medical stuff in intensive care units who are asking for a shut down for 23 weeks to shut down social life significantly and afterwards reverse all lifted distractions once the possibility is there and if there's also the possibility of having more testing so on one side where people also abiding to this restriction are asking also for stricter measures but on the other side we have seen also over the past year a lot of protests happening in several german cities asking for the immediate lifting of the restriction calling them a violation of the basic human rights it's
9:24 am
a minority but as a lot of people are saying it's a loud minority so we're seeing this division in the german society but also in several political parties world is still trying to find a balance between adding more restrictions to police ones at all lifting more restrictions to police the other one ultimately what is all of this mean for the election coming up in germany now if a federal elections were to be held next sunday the results would be quite disastrous for chancellor merkel's conservatives have a look at her bloc with literally 27 percent a significant loss of 6 percentage points the greens defend their 2nd place at 22 percent up 2 points this initial democrats finish unchanged at 16 percent the far right gets 11 percent also unchanged the business friendly f.d.p. wins 2 points finishing at 9 percent and the far left party remains at 7 percent so these are the worst polling numbers for angela merkel's bloc since before the
9:25 am
pandemic is there a realistic chance the conservatives might have to leave government after this year's upcoming federal elections. that's right it cannot be discounted that the c.d.u. the conservative merkel's angela merkel's party will be locked out of federal government starting in september once said we have of course the criticism of the handling off the pandemic on the other side we have also several in piece and volved in the so-called mask procurement scandals that also damper to their image of the c.d.u. of the conservative bloc they now will have the challenge to quickly get back their trust of voters and so also decide who will lead who will be the chancellor candidate either by various state premium opposite our all party lead it will definitely have a difficult task of getting back the trust to continue in government political correspondent benjamin thank you. staying with the

pandemic and april fools day prank in belgium that quickly got out of hand police in brussels stepped in to break up a party in a park that was flouting social distancing rules and other anti pandemic measures. what started as an april fool's prank on facebook ended in teo us. brussels police mourn the party was a hoax and illegal but crowds came anyway tear gas and water cannon were deployed. we set up a little show not even darkness that we came to the park and the next thing we knew it was going up in flames but it's not right that they have water cannon and where he with nothing it's not a case upon the miles. to suppose used. to but these pictures tell a different story dozens of injuries were reported on both sides the fake festival started as a facebook event called love it promised famous deejays and no coronavirus
9:27 am
restrictions a clear violation of belgium's containment measures most of the books but i think that too much is being done and i think the young people are not trusted the knopf or do they are aware of these fires and know how to be careful because too many rules are imposed on us that really deprive us of freedom just to listen to your group it comes at a time when covert 19 infections are surging in belgium police have warned that the party goers could face prosecution. up today thanks for watching.
