this is g.w. news live from berlin tonight a race against time as emergency coated 19 medical supplies arrive in india oxygen and ventilators are needed for overcrowded hospitals where new patients are now being turned away the number of covert 19 deaths continues to grow exponentially also coming up tonight did he really say that the british prime minister insisting he did not make insensitive comments about qubit 19 victims of boris johnson's denials are falling on deaf ears and the german politician who's taking on facebook
10:01 pm
in the courts a name of this green party m.p. including a fake quote made the rounds on social media she's now suing facebook in the hope that it will be a landmark case in fighting hate speech online. i'm brink off to our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states and to all of you around the world welcome to the 1st for an emergency supplies are arriving in india as it battles a catastrophic wave of coded 1000 infections ventilators and oxygen were flown in from britain today germany says it will send in medical equipment in the next coming days on tuesday india registered more than 300000 new cases of the coronavirus for a 6 consecutive day overwhelmed hospitals are now turning patients away as the
10:02 pm
government scrambles to get equipment to those who need it most this is definitely turned into a race against time. in some indian hospitals the oxygen supply has run out. the people who might have survived the disease are dying as a result. of heading out there there's no oxygen in all of town. my mother was admitted 3 days ago i was told she was fine and recovering all the tests were done then last night they said they didn't have any more oxygen she passed away. from. hospitals an i.c.u. units across the country are overwhelmed after weeks of a sharp rise in cases the health care system is collapsing. oxygen has become the most precious of commodities. i'm buying or 2 that are good
10:03 pm
aboard your order of the future who come to that level. they are lowering the oxygen level one. but it needs to be higher. so this is a problem. with oxygen and hospital beds running out the government is scrambling to get equipment to the areas that are hardest hit. the have compressed oxygen that's moving across the country using the country's very basis to get it to the places that need it the most emergency supplies from the u.k. have begun arriving and more help as promised from abroad to be gets heated after the final details have been clarified with the indian side the 1st shipment should be on its way in the next few days. but in the meantime many indians are left to fend for themselves. doing all they can to care for loved ones some dry for
10:04 pm
hours in search of oxygen. i don't know man i have come from very far to collect oxygen from my father. i'm scared that although the oxygen is available today what will we do for it's not available tomorrow. but until help arrives on a larger scale many people in india are left gasping for air. for more now i want to bring in dr krishna kumar born in india he's now director of the duke global helps innovation center in durham north carolina and he's associate professor of global health and medicine at duke university dr it's good to have you on the program i mean when we look at the situation in india at the moment it looks like the health care system has been called completely off guard completely unprepared how was that possible. yes you're exactly right we
10:05 pm
should remember that the indian health system is under-resourced to begin with that there's about 4 percent of g.d.p. that's spent on essential health services and health expenditures while the global average is closer to 10 percent so there's not a lot of capacity to start with and what we saw after the waves in the fall were really several months that should have been time for preparation and in fact were wasted as a time of complacency of indifference and we saw very large religious gatherings go forward we saw election rallies being held that turned into a super spreader event though this was really a catastrophe in the making that could have been avoided and maybe there's all this is also a question of priorities india under prime minister modi has invested hugely in its military and if you compare that to what it's invested in the health care system it's been rather small is this in your opinion is this the right priority to have
10:06 pm
i think india needs significant investment in the health sector care that you're not going to see large economic growth as long as you're not dealing with the health of populations and we've seen that from investment in health and countries around the world we do know that the private sector has a huge role to play in india's need care delivery system for for health services and we're starting to see the private sector start to coalesce around the current crisis but the public health system has collapsed the health care delivery system has collapsed and we're seeing now that thousands of people every day are paying with their lives for those failures and we now have a situation where india is reliant on foreign medical supplies is that going to be key now to bringing this crisis under control. yes we are far outstripping what's possible whether it's hospital beds oxygen
10:07 pm
protective equipment medications so we do need to see a huge mobilization which we are starting to but that needs to continue over a period of days to weeks until we're turning the corner which is going to take some time because of the amount of time that this is really been building up and once we get past that acute phase over the next several weeks we then need to focus on how to shore up the health system how to put stronger public health measures in place and try to ramp up vaccinations as protective factor in the long term we know that the models to lose that we still have another 2 weeks of exponential growth. as well as could be 1000 deaths beyond that what in your opinion needs to be done immediately to mitigate the damage yet right now people are dying because they can't access the basics whether it's medical
10:08 pm
oxygen or of hospital bed so the ability to ramp up access immediately is really critical to save lives today and tomorrow so the more supplies that we can fly and the more capacity that we can help to support is what the world needs to be doing at the same time the way we're going to turn the corner over the several weeks from now is really to make sure we're reducing the infection rates and taking real public health measures to try to bring down the. amazing spike that we've seen that we've seen in cases over the last several weeks dr chris dorner kumar joining us tonight from durham north carolina duke university dr we appreciate your time and your valuable insights tonight thank you thank you. well here in germany the coded 19 curfew a ban on going out after 10 pm well it's in effect and it is the latest attempt to
10:09 pm
slow down 19 infections here it's being implemented despite protests in several cities in cologne in western germany and even stricter curfew was being enforced not everyone there is happy about it but it appears most people are managing to stick to the new rule. evening in cologne shortly before 9 pm soon the curfew will come into force at the beginning it was terrible knowing you're not allowed to go out anymore i think to myself if it helps ok then i'm willing to stick to the rules but i don't know if it'll really help. were kept in a cage at least i feel like that on the one hand people are safe in their homes but on the other hand they feel trapped because everybody wants to go outside get fresh air and so on but that might say you know we can't go anywhere not to eat not to do anything i'm just trying to put up with it now and hoping it'll all be over soon. but. an hour later
10:10 pm
a public order officers cutty and start their patrol they don't want to give their full names for fear of public hostility the streets and even the normally busy banks of the rhine of deserted with a few exceptions. good evening wear from the public order office of cologne you know about the curfew starting at 9 pm not 10 pm 9 pm. due to its high infection rates cologne now has $240.00 coronavirus cases per 100000 people that spur the city to impose an earlier curfew in the rest of germany curfew does indeed start at 10 pm. but the problem is the problem is that all these different regulations are pushing people into the brain if they don't know what they're allowed to do or not do we've given ourselves a little grace period and as long as colonus on a different track than the federal government will try to have a relaxed discussion with people.
10:11 pm
that goes for the beginning of the evening anyone who violates the rules later could face charges and a fine of up to 250 euros but most people have a valid reason to be outside as well as papers authorizing an exception to the rules such as people returning from work. again and again totty and kike it reports of people on the move around the city but often these are just false alarms here for example a music video was being shot but the shoot is approved and hygiene measures are in place. because this is normally a nightclub the residents were worried that a corona party would take place here and across the kona party stops and. all in all the office of public order has charged almost 140 people with breaking curfew in the past 10 days. as i find it simply remarkable that no matter how much people
10:12 pm
complain about the measures and no matter how much pushback you get from a small part of society the bottom line is that most of them stick to the rules. for coffee in chi the evening patrol is over for today the curfew in cologne is set to last until mid may. well it's been billed as europe's biggest indoor rock concert since the start of the pandemic a concert in spain that went ahead with $5000.00 on backs unaided music fans in the audience and its organizers say it did not trigger a jump in corona virus infections everyone wore masks at the indoor event but there was no social distancing here's how it worked. on stage in barcelona one of spain's most popular bands indie rockers a love of lesbian. on the floor crowd dancing swaying and cheering together
10:13 pm
wearing masks but with no assigned seating and no requirement to keep space free between them. excited fans gathered a month ago for the eagerly awaited event the 1st big concert without social distancing since the start of the panamic. concert goers were given a coronavirus test before they were allowed in an experiment to find out whether mass events can be safely held music promoters worked with one of person known as main hospitals to put on the concert and doctors say fears of a jump in infections have proved unfounded. noise from it was not a super spreading event that there's not been an excess of cases and in fact there is no sign that transmission took place during an event in which a public health experts believe that a combination of ventilation face masks and testing can work the venue holds 17000
10:14 pm
people but only 5000 were allowed in. because it was a move that we had detected 6 people who tested positive after the concert for have been able to identify the exact moment when they were infected. for example 2 who attended were later infected by their mother in law but if this is that this isn't going to kill it's now hope the event will be the 1st of many. it's the sort of these are good results that can help open up the culture center again to the point of. there is a lot at stake a spanish study shows the european music industry lost 3 cool to save its income last year. are those take a look now at some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world u.s. president biden calls it stunning progress in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic more than 50 percent of adults in the u.s.
10:15 pm
have received at least one bank seemed the rate of new infections the rate of deaths both fall sources in me in march say the military has bombed villages in territory controlled by ethnic minority current forces the strikes came hours after the rebel group attacked an army outpost near the thai border the current rebels are close allies of the resistance movement against february's military. in chad thousands of people have taken to the streets to protest the military council that took power after the death last week of president idriss deby at least 2 protesters were killed the transitional led by d.b. son has promised an inclusive national dialogue but protesters want an immediate return to civilian rule. british prime minister boris johnson is under pressure as he heads into regional elections after a series of the damaging leaks multiple media organizations are reporting that
10:16 pm
johnson said that he would rather see bodies piled high in their thousands then impose a 3rd coronavirus lockdown the prime minister denies the reports and says that his office is investigating the source of the leaks this follows allegations of corruption made by his former chief adviser who claims that mr johnson asked conservative party donors to pay for the refurbishment and his official residence. for more now let's bring in our correspondent there good marks in london good evening to you barry good so this sounds like a lot of drama building street. well yes indeed friends i mean for a lot of people these remarks alleged remarks by the prime minister would have been in bad taste but there is this really there are many accusations against
10:17 pm
prime minister burrs johnson that he has acted in a non transparent way when it comes for example to the refurbishment office flat so he's former closest ally really the his advisor dominic cummings who was the mastermind behind it breaks it come pain and really it's also the reason that johnson is even prime minister he was such a close and trusted aide he has now turned against the prime minister and said that he has possibly acted illegally but also on ethically in accepting. donations for his refurbishment of the flat in downing street that is what he alleges now the government says that everything will be paid back but of course the opposition is see them on this and are saying that everything needs to be much more transparent but there were other allegations for example that the former prime
10:18 pm
minister david cameron has low beat on behalf of financial company and that that was improper and also that business people have had axes to prime minister boris johnson so so it really is larry of allegations and it really doesn't look good for the prime minister at the moment you know it may not look good but will there be any consequences for the prime minister. if there will be any formal consequences that is the subject of several investigations at the moment we don't know that yet but what we do know is that there are local elections next week at the end of next week also elections for the scottish parliament these are very important also on that on a national level because of possible scottish independence is at stake so there is quite a lot of instability at the moment in the u.k. and for the government to be seen in this way i think the most damaging allegations
10:19 pm
are that those johnson allegedly made these flippant remarks that many people will find highly inappropriate about he'd rather have see bodies pile up and go into another coronavirus locked i think this is what's most potentially most damaging at the moment but at the end of next week there will be the elections so we'll see whether there will be and the pushback from the vote is when it comes to everything that's being alleged at the moment for the british prime minister you know we will see you next week for sure w.'s big of moss on the story force in london tonight big thank you a new word submission here in berlin charge the wife and work of one of germany's most distinguished nazi hunters fritz was the chief prosecutor at the trial 1963 he's best known for his role in bringing holocaust architect at all fleishman to justice in israel. attorney general fritz powell was determined to hold the

national socialists legally accountable for their crimes when most in post-war germany just wanted to forget the past imprisoned in the 1930 s. as a young jewish lawyer and committed leftwing power fled to denmark and sweden years later he returned from exile to track down nazi criminals. after the war it seemed logical to bring about what we had dreamt of. in the we were idealistic and probably over optimistic. about our secured convictions against s.s. members for atrocities committed at auschwitz but only against considerable opposition that's probably a move on the problem was that people holding senior positions in the judicial system had themselves be nazis and that meant he was facing institutional resistance. nationalist power had little trust in officialdom when he found out
10:21 pm
that out of a human one of the architects of the holocaust was hiding in argentina he told the israeli secret service rather than the german authorities he was driven by a desire for justice and accountability that it was a great humanitarian and he fought for justice and democracy that power died suddenly in 1968 his unrelenting battle for a better germany took its toll on his own health. well demanding to be deleted and german politician is taking legal action to force facebook to remove fake quotes from its side in what she hopes will be a landmark case in fighting hate speech on the platform back in 2015 the german green party lawmaker you see her there were not a coup nost was the subject of a meme which included a fake quote attributed to her although the original post was deleted copies of it are still widespread on facebook. is demanding facebook delete not only the
10:22 pm
original post but all of its toppings. are digital reporter matthew moore joins me now he's been taking a look at this give us the background here how did we get from there to here yeah well like many politicians here in germany who supported the country's asylum policy in 2015 were not a coup nost attracted a lot of criticism and became a target for right wing extremists and as you say in 2015 minutes here we can see it was posted on facebook of how along with a fake quote which says quote integration begins with you as a jerram unlearning talk a reference to germany's turkish community and also a fake fruit we should never said and designed to kind of to provoke a reaction which it did no she says for the salt solution but duplicate some spread off by her opponent said we can see here what happens if you try to look at i missed it it is
10:23 pm
a warning label but it's still there and although the original was deleted you can still see that image with the fake quote. over and over and over on the face on facebook and private. groups no one's face to identify these duplicate using its technology and delete them proactively she says that these fake which are used by the right wing groups to kind of weapon trade she's fed up and that's why she's now calling on the german court to force facebook to delete the for facebook to act eller i spoke to her and she told me about the impact that these kind of fake means have. glass it can drive he met no it is bad for me as well when i'm running run for elections for example of people ask what kind of nonsense i'll ask you for as a politician but it also was strong psychological harm for
10:24 pm
a lot of our fake quotes like this are you know door open for hate speech. dora restraints because i mean we know how difficult it is delete something forever online anyway so why is this a landmark case fred until now if someone posts a fake quarter by you or me we can go to facebook and say this is complete and we can fly get an investment to lete it but what they can't do is if someone took the image before it was deleted and report facebook after that stupid we would have to then complain again about the the follow up post and so on and so on and it's this is this process of whack a mole which mrs kuhn asked and campaigners are objecting to the think facebook should have a responsibility to all the images and the reports and they see that facebook has the power to do this and here in germany facebook can automatically center
10:25 pm
swastikas images of swastikas and so they say why can't your apply that kind of technology to this problem. on alternately they hope that they can pressure facebook to change its policy not just here in germany through the courts but hope that place that will maybe address a adopt a policy globally for all right matthew moore matthew always thank you. our sports news now in bundesliga german soccer news byron munich have hired rb leipzig julian bond to be their new coach next season byron believe signals a new generation of coaches signing the 33 year old to a fine year deal. yulian not was mom became the youngest coach in bundesliga history when he took over at hoffenheim in 2016 the coaching prodigy helped them qualify for the champions league for the 1st time ever. since 2019 he's
