2 days right here on the road in front of a sikh temple 50 kilometers from home. his son passed the flu nobody. has also developed a severe lung infection. he gently needs to be hospitalized but his father says even this week shifted enjoyment is a blessing. for these people who are working 24 hours providing oxygen cylinders otherwise it's very difficult to get oxygen for them or to get a bed in a hospital or for that morning this morning i visited 15 or 20 hospitals to look for the best for him and god you know there isn't a single bed all of them refused to us. for the last 2 weeks. then has them facing a stiff your shortage of medical oxygen. this isn't life saving last resort a free oxygen service run by a cause of health a sikh group one in tears here considered the just the arctic king to be secondary

to the central tenet of service and sick kids and. several of them have already been infected. but don't hear tell us they aren't afraid these see they must do something to save these lame. gergen david i go home to see what was it be the time i told my bypass never stop working on the album is the event support we are getting ready for him about his and i we just received so and he likes you and this is a time that people are even afraid to have i don't really talk to. every family member . of going to. the group has 9 trucks doubting me of my plans for city and. the oxygen here is provided for free as patients continue all be rushed to help many hospitals in delhi have stalled taking in your patients because of the offer to pay for putting out s.o.s. nashville and twitter begging for help as they only have our number one minute of

oxygen left. this hospital is one of the previous night was a clue she after reading thought i was at oxygen diving authorities on twitter and even reducing exton floor to subsistence level to make it last long go the hospital and got supplies in the nick of time doctors here tell us that supplies that used to last them 2 weeks now evaporate in 36. they cannot predict if the next round will reach them one day joining of patients followed just to good reasons is heartbreaking for dr wendy to feel those many of these big since hopelessly living in this profession because it is because they wanted to help other people through their sickness and in this. if. that by itself is a big thing and in most modern people all of them are very few who do get lucky.

back at the oxygen so this has finally managed to arrange a bed for his son immediately the cylinder is going to woods and not the beach and . 2 weeks into the oxygen crisis here. every live good breath is a gift. and joining us now to talk more about volunteer efforts to help the sick is e-mail saying kakar she has a house activist with the people's health movement india and she is in delhi and as you can see apparently we just lost the connection with her so we will try and get that back for you. we were hoping to speak with her about the situation in india but as we try to get that line back up we're going to head now to another story because things look very different for example in neighboring bangladesh it locked down appears to be working and infection numbers have started to drop but the

poorest in society are struggling to find work and sometimes even food. there are many new mouths to feed in the bangladeshi capital dhaka. the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown are hitting people hard. especially those already straining to make ends meet. so many the food provided by this charity is all they have to eat at the end of their daily ramadan fast or. i mean if i've also my job is coronavirus pandemic i have no earnings so i come here if talk. to go buy orders are staying i pull my rickshaw under the sun but i make very little money and i'm too poor to buy if they are so i come here for free food. the government imposed districts nationwide lockdown and a poll to try to contain a massive surge in infections. they're optimistic that the measures are working as
8:07 am
cases appear to be falling. but the restrictions are taking a heavy toll. more than 2 thirds of people in bangladesh have been forced to stop work or close their businesses at least for a time because of the pandemic. downs are hitting our bread and butter my stock dates for ramadan because of the lockdown i had to keep my shop closed the dates are rotting as i was unable to sell them and this is difficult for us these lockdowns and the with the recovery in my purview in skullcaps i still inside my closed shop i was expecting to sell them all during the month of ramadan before aid but i doubt that's going to happen it is very problematic for us. but the government is resisting pressure to open up more quickly saying this would lead to more casualties especially with the end of ramadan approaching in the middle of may
8:08 am
. they're also concerned that what's happening in india could come to bangladesh. they say if the indian variant is allowed to circulate on the street so fun to dash the consequences would be devastating. and we're heading back now to our top story which is india seeing another rise in record rise and covert 19 deaths we're speaking now about the volunteer efforts in that regard we're joined now by you know yet seeing she is a health activist with the peoples health movement in india and she is joining us now from delhi thank you so much for joining us here on news how are you managing to get relief to the sake of especially considering that oxygen is in such short supply. thank you so much so yes i mean you know there are 2 aspects i think there's one oxygen is in short supply and 2nd you know there's a huge intimation gap even with regards to whether it is available when it is
8:09 am
available you know and even plants that are providing oxygen that you would shorten your story they seem to have run out that if i asked so essentially what we try to do is you know keep up with the information keep up with availability and go and we get requests from patients would require oxygen would require oxygen concentrate does we try to connect them. as we try to ensure that you know that we are able to get them afraid of sin and know which they can pick up. from in the city and also give them information on where they can get and decent in those the food and where they can but use oxygen concentrator those another thing that we've already come to doing is you know we're trying to trying to create a community where there's a cylinder engines of in those and oxygen concentrator those can be shared so if i as a patient don't acquire it any more than i would pass it on to somebody who does so we're trying to connect this with a lot of moving parts as you do try to connect people what do you see is the biggest challenges right now for you and your fellow volunteers. i think the
8:10 am
biggest challenges i know are with regards to availability so you know that is i mean the delhi high court has taken on a sense of everything that's going on and they have hearings drinan be out in what's been deported been ordered by you know hospitals and by the government is that right now is not getting you know it's baby oxygen supply as well what it is and and that is a huge challenge because that means that you know hospitals are not getting oxygen individuals are not getting off the gym and that is doing you know constraining us in being able to help people so one when people just why oh i see you you know and . complicated to die for them to hospitals because 1st we need to find out if the hospital has also been supply or north then the 2nd problem is that prices of oxygen 7 does in the market. there is a lot of that marketing and often it's difficult to supply it is a legitimate or not there are instances of patients who don't supply. in advance
8:11 am
and that i missed in terms of people being up and then the supply you know disappearing so people are getting cornered in the name of oxygen as well. and then of course you know there is that issue with the feeling plans running out of oxygen or you know often by you mean usually dry and evenings and nights of the toughest for us in terms of helping people with i did oxygen concentrator those all accessing beds. and you know there's also yes. we thank you so much for joining us here and apologies we have to leave it there but we thank you so much for joining us to tell us a little bit more about these volunteer efforts as we mentioned you're a health activist with the peoples health movement in india where we are seeing one record after another when it comes to cope with 19 deaths so thank you for joining us to share your efforts and we wish you all the best thank you somers.
