the asians in gaza have crossed a red line and attacked us with missiles in the outskirts of jerusalem involved we will learn. the catalyst for the violence was israel's plans to evict a number of palestinian families from east jerusalem to make room for jewish settlers. oh jerusalem's al aksa mosque compound a sacred site to both muslims and jews has also been at the center of tensions in recent weeks. the international community has repeated its calls for the escalation. and for more let's bring in shanti verizon a reporter shani i mean the situation has escalated quite quickly from street skirmishes to rocket attacks air strikes now a human toll what's expected in the coming hours the coming days. it's
3:04 pm
a great question nobody knows we do know for a fact that the israeli military chief of staff have announced he's preparing for wide ground operation we know there's been 5000 israeli reserve troops that have been called for duty that's a sign that israel is not going to retreat or deescalate anytime soon we know that we do also need to keep in mind on thursday we have in to speak down one of the most important days in holidays past the end of the moment on fast it's a it's a celebration for muslims they very much in gaza would like to have this round of fighting done by then it seems like is the ram is not going to collaborate with that has no interest in making things toned down by thursday and if we have any doubt about that we also hear in the last an hour that the egyptians have turned to israel in offering to be the mediator between israel and palestinians and it was rejected by the israelis who are claiming we still need to do more work in gaza before we can retreat before we can deescalate so i don't think we see any changes
3:05 pm
coming in next year or 2 to say the least a very sober assessment there johnny tell us. about the timing behind this flare up in violence why is this happening right now. well you know this is this is a common known unfortunately between israeli and palestinians but actually if you look at each scene separately in israel and in gaza hamas we see each one have their own political internal incentives we see in israel a prime minister netanyahu wouldn't hurt at the end of his career trying to find for another another term in office while opposition has been seem to be gaining momentum in the last week and for him to be the strong defender of israel in this timing it's a great deal of support getting a lot of support pushing himself forward maybe making it again galvanizing forces behind him staying in the prime minister prime minister's office that's on the
3:06 pm
israeli side and if you look at the palestinians we see that hamas following the cancellation of the elections that were supposed to be taking place they need to cement their legacy and their ability to be the new rulers of the palestinian people both in gaza and in the west bank and this is what they're doing they're connecting this all started with jewish women they're connecting themselves as the defenders of jerusalem and he fights happening in jerusalem we come from gaza we will defend to the palestinians we are going to be the leaders of the palestinians in a day post mahmoud abbas the aging leader that can stop the election and seem to be refusing to clear the scene but hamas is not waiting for him to go they are making steps on the ground to galvanize support of the west bank which is traditionally a fanta area for them themselves so in a way both sides are actually playing to each other's hands by keeping this
3:07 pm
conflict alive. timing which is very sensitive to what is the international community's role here because the u.s. and the you have called on all sides to deescalate tells right briefly. well we don't from past ground like that and we know too many of these that this is the only way to actually bring some sort of ceasefire israel would try to get it's. what we would call you know they would they would say they want to punish hamas for their initiative and it will only be stopped when with a strong strong international pressure it's not there yet we know from the past that it has is really just 3 to 4 days of freehand of operating in gaza before being really stopped firmly by the americans europeans and so on one tiny thing we need to keep in mind this time israel netanyahu himself has had in the last year gotten breaking the peace agreements with arab nations we need to see what they
3:08 pm
choose to do this time because this puts him in a very tricky position because everything connected to palestinians of course sensitive but especially of this timing at the end of ramadan. shani was honest thank you. hadley 7 children and 2 adults have been killed and many more wounded after a shooting at a school in russia local authorities say that a lone gunman opened fire in a school in the city of cazan the city is the capital of the muslim majority region of tatarstan authorities say that a suspect has been arrested he was reportedly posting on social media shortly before the attack the motive for the shooting is not yet clear let's bring in correspondent emily sure one who's joining us now from moscow emily what more do we know. we know that the suspected shooter entered the building of the school this morning 9 people died in this attack including 7
3:09 pm
children and over 20 other people were also injured the attacker was apparently a 19 year old male who gave himself up to police shortly after the attack the area around the school is currently cordoned off by officers of the national guard and there is additional security in place at schools across the city as well today schools will be closed across ca's on today and tomorrow and tomorrow has also been declared a day of official mourning across the republic of tatarstan where cousin is located and this is really a big deal i think for the entire country for russia this crime will be investigated according to officials on the federal level and members of the federal investigative committee are on their way to moscow right now and the indication about the motive or about the shooter. while this this is still an ongoing
3:10 pm
investigation so we don't know for sure and probably there will be some kind of an official statement. in the future we do know as they said that the attacker was a 19 year old man and we also have been hearing 1st of all that he had an official gun license and also media reports here say that he actually used to be a pupil at the school that he attacked he graduated from there 4 years of ago according to media reports and apparently he was then studying at a vocational school in cousin and he was expelled this year so that could be perhaps a potential motive and we also have been hearing from media that he pulled from media here in russia that he posted on social media ahead of the attack about his plans. the killing and he also has called himself compared himself to a god on the internet but i'm sure we'll be hearing more from the officials
3:11 pm
investigated and investigating what happened going forward so this type of incident is very unusual in russia isn't it. it is it's very rare to have shootings like this in russia at all at schools as well there have been you know only one there's been one case of a shooting in moscow in 20141 shooting in 2018 in crimea in carriage which of course is officially by international law ukraine but is considered by russia to be under its jurisdiction and there have been a handful of other school attacks but none of them with firearms so with knobs or hammers for example and that's because it's really hard to get your hand your hands on a gun here in russia there are strict gun laws and actually today in response to this shooting we heard from russia's president vladimir putin that he wants to look into
3:12 pm
those gun laws and make them even stricter so that this kind of thing potentially can happen in the future such a tragic incident 7 children 2 adults killed in this school shooting emily sherrilyn bringing us up to date thank you. well today marks the 10th anniversary of a landmark treaty on violence against women and domestic abuse the council of europe convention also known as the istanbul convention says that states have a responsibility to prevent all forms of violence against women and must promote equality between women and men it says that they must investigate allegations of violence and prosecute perpetrators and protect and support victims of violence global system collected by the united nations paint a grim picture the u.n. says that an estimated one in 3 women worldwide has experienced domestic or sexual violence in their lives the trees anniversary comes as university students in
3:13 pm
britain have been protesting against sexual harassment and violence on campus is very good mass has more from the city of coventry fear of sexual violence runs rampant in this university that's what emily the 1st english student says she says she knows women who have been attacked and raped on the grounds of the university of warrick i haven't met a girl who hasn't encountered something on campus whether dots kakul ng or something so much more serious there's such a huge scale it's everywhere. for months women have been protesting at the university against what they call rape culture emilie's one of the main organizers she herself has been sexually assaulted she describes what happened in her kitchen during the tea i had a close friend of mine who i completely thought i could trust he ended up groping me and my kitchen island off the bot he sent his friends
3:14 pm
a series of voice nights about me that they'd been played to me about like kind of how he was looking at my body and how he was so excited to come back to university so he could have his way with me. the students are also fighting against other comparatively small offenses and they have concrete demands for university management a small group of women has been occupying the campus for 2 months they say may have to trade just cross the line too often and get away with it and no one really helps the victims the university of warrick says in a statement that they are committed to eliminating all forms of sexual violence and they're encouraging students to come forward and to report any sexual misconduct for many students however this is not good enough so the supporters at the moment are very very subpar they're not doing what they should do the under-funded under-staffed so we want to be reaped we want to make sure that survivors have enough support after their incidents they may have to live in
3:15 pm
a tent and study for exams as the rain falls but female students here won't give up until their demands are met they also have to change male attitudes about how women should be treated. it falls on the men to make sure that there's a responsibility to make sure that you can make the women feel safe on campus by doing basic things and picking up on basic cues emily eisenberg is happy to see that things are beginning to change people frankly ostracize they drop talking about because for the fast time like boys are watching tugging on the friends and like recognizing the issue and disagreeing with what's going on she had a friend's hope that protests will be heard throughout the u.k. they're convinced that the fear that motivates them is felt by women everywhere not just at their university. and we'd like to return to our top story now a quick reminder of what we have been following for you the un has expressed deep
3:16 pm
concern over the escalation of violence between israel and palestinians israel and hamas militants have traded heavy fire for the 2nd day the outbreak in tension follows weeks of clashes over disputes in east jerusalem. and for more on that we are joined now by the israeli ambassador to germany jeremy is sakharov mr ambassador joining us on the phone now thank you so much for your time i'd like to be going by asking you prime minister men netanyahu has said that israel would respond to hamas rocket attacks with full great force where is this going. well i would remind you that we being trying. crew in for a number of. measures to try and calm the situation down over the last few days both in jerusalem. where we could not respond to the rocket fire or 100 courses that were going to cross the border. this restraint from israel's point
3:17 pm
of view was met with. cruel 150 rockets. which were targeting truth. under. 40 rockets in one barrage in 5 minutes at noon today and so far. we have seen casualties on our side 2 women were killed by the latest cross rocket attacks from ashkelon and we have about 70 people injured so we have tried to use every measure of restraint but hamas is clearly on a path of provocation. that will be a critical factor in seeing how far how long this this situation in tools you are pointing to restraint but the bottom line is that there are these urgent calls for deescalation and i'd like to give you the opportunity to respond because
3:18 pm
the gaza health ministry has in fact said that 26 palestinians including 9 children have been killed by israeli airstrikes in the past day how do you respond to that 1st of all we as i said we are very restrained and we didn't respond to initial missile attacks but when you're attacked with 250 or so missiles against major civilian centers of. jerusalem your capital you have to respond and when we responded we targeted hamas targets military targets and to the greatest extent possible to try to limit damage otherwise. obviously very great any innocent life that is lost but you know unlike come us we have targeting military targets they are targeting cities and civilians. let's talk about the tension that has been running so high for weeks now and i'd like i'd like to ask you
3:19 pm
a little bit more about. you know palestinians they are calling the recent moves to some of them from strategic parts of the city and they're using the terminology ethnic cleansing and illegal and they've also pointed to the heavy handed israeli. police response how do you respond to those frustrations that happened while an offer of 1st of all. i think you know in situations like this you know we should try and put all the. loaded slogans aside and try and see what was actually a real estate dispute but i prefer to emphasize one thing already on sunday the supreme court of israel announced that the hearing that was supposed to occur regarding this dispute g.r.r.r. that the hearing would be perspire on and the attorney general. had asked for this and also they ordered that the attorney general review the substance of the cases
3:20 pm
so we already had taken for the time being this issue and tried another step to diffuse the situation nothing imminent was going to happen and shake her off from that point of view the reaction of the palestinians is 1st of all go to violence and go to demonstrations that see 1st of all do you have something to demonstrate about and i think that this is something the you know don't let's not forget yesterday was jerusalem day no jews were allowed to go on to the temple mount we also rerouted the jerusalem day march so it would not go through the damascus gate in the into the muslim quarter of the old city so we have tried to take steps i do not see the same steps taken by hamas or by the palestinian authority to defuse the situation and i would like to emphasize one thing anyone is calling for the deescalation we have been talking to the highest levels of governments around the world and i've been talking to my counterparts in germany to ask the palestinians
3:21 pm
to jordanians the egyptians to do all they can to bring down. this conflict and resume common tranquility so we are calling already for the escalation for the last 3 or. 4 days and working in that respect. what does all of this mean for the peace talks in your view what are your words in that regard for addressing these issues driving the conflict fundamentally well the truth is let's not forget the one of the driving forces behind this exchange of missiles which is coming from gaza which is on the control of the come off the hamas is an extreme terrorist organization islamic terrorist organization that has absolutely no interest in any peace process or any political process with israel as opposed to the palestinian authority does capote's to support a political solution. and i think that this time the moderates in the region israel
3:22 pm
jordan. and egypt should try and work to persuade the palestinian authority to do all they can to stop the violence once you stop the violence people can talk if it's violence people call and that is the true barrier to to any progress and i would hope that the president violence would indeed cease and soon as possible israeli ambassador to germany jeremy as knockoff we thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us you explained the israeli side of things here we very much appreciate it thank you thank you chris just well now let's get you up to speed on some other stories making news around the world. new government data in china show its population grew at its lowest pace in decades the world's largest country by population counted around 1400000000 people in 2020 and a gain of about 600000000 since 2010 and ageing population could have

the 1st ever covert 19 vaccine for animals. this is owners daniel and say they signed up for the vaccination just to be on the safe side. our cat goes outside a lot sometimes he doesn't even come home at night because he's doing his own thing but he lives with us so we're always concerned he could bring an infection home with him we plan to start a family and heard that covert can be dangerous for pregnant women so it's better to be safe it doesn't hurt the cat. the vaccine will provide these cats with immunity from the corona virus for at least 6 months according to the doctors here . and animals can show respiratory symptoms of the disease problems breathing a cough or a loss of their sense of smell essentially the symptoms are the same as they are for people just in a much much lighter form. but it's not the
3:25 pm
symptoms themselves that are a concern here the world health organization has warned that animals including minks could become carriers for the corona virus and even pass it back to people last year 17000000 links were cold in denmark after some of them caught covert 19. the russian made vaccine called carney back cause of could prevent according to developers the country's veterinary and cultural watchdog groups and horse nods or began trials on rabbits dogs cats foxes and other animals in october now they say the job is ready for mass production. the vaccine was developed as a preventative measure something aimed at the future in case there are negative situations like the development of a mutation that can be passed between different types of animals. we shouldn't forget that any measures for disease prevention for animals prevent people getting sick as well because around 70 percent of human diseases come from animals. and
