this is news live from berlin tonight israel calls up thousands of army reserves as the conflict with the palestinians escalates israeli forces pounding targets including residential buildings in the palestinian territories and in israel cities jews and arabs turning against each other the prime minister condemning what he calls mob violence also coming up tonight taking time to smell the roses the new
10:01 pm
code that 19 therapy that helps patients to recover lost since is and to learn how to smell again and tesla's a lung muskat since bitcoin into freefall he says the car maker will no longer accept the cryptocurrency because it uses insane amounts of energy. i'm burned off to our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states and to all of you around the world welcome we begin tonight with the escalating conflict between the israelis and the palestinians egyptian negotiators are talking to both sides but so far there's no breakthrough to report israeli forces are reported to be building up at the gaza border and the army has called up thousands of reservists hamas militants have watched hundreds of rockets into israel israeli forces have hit back with devastating air strikes on gaza and
10:02 pm
mob violence has broken out in israeli cities the death toll in both israel and the pale. to be in territories is runs. out they are shouting revenge hammer supporters and guards are holed funerals for 13 militants killed in israeli air raids. the atmosphere is charged as the conflict between israel and the militants worsens by the day. one of the israeli casualties of the many hundreds of hamas missiles fired into israel a soldier who died too young israel's prime minister says the losses his country is suffering won't be in vain so the i.d.f. has already attacked hundreds of targets and we continue to strike hamas whilst defending our citizens it will take more time but with both defending and attacking
10:03 pm
we will restore peace to israel. the air raid sirens sound yet again israelis run for cover this time israel's aerial missile defense system intercepted a miss sile. but other rockets have cracked the so-called eye and and the reach of hamas seems to be extending further and further into israel this is a neighborhood just 10 kilometers east of tel aviv in heavily populated central israel. as a mass launches more rockets from gaza negotiators from egypt held talks with both sides to try and find a truce. gyptian qatari and international mediators are talking with the resistance hamas and the israeli occupation but every time they make an effort to create a situation which allows the impression to start a new israeli decision to destroy towers and kill children the elderly and women
10:04 pm
stifles these efforts. in gaza and the empty streets the beginning of the muslim holiday of heat at the end of the holy month of ramadan it's usually a time of joy but here amid the ongoing violence there is little to celebrate. for the latest now i'm joined by our correspondent tanya kramer she is in tel aviv good evening to you tell you what are you hearing about israel's military campaign and possibly starting a ground offensive. well the focus at the moment of the israeli military is on an intensive campaign and bombardment that's what we've seen here in 2 days at least so this try to see is as they say to have a setlist to have a set list of targets and what they describe as infrastructure off hamas islamic jihad or other militant groups that they want to degrade as much as possible the
10:05 pm
military capabilities off the militant groups in gaza but nevertheless there is preparation for other operations to come and the israeli defense minister benny guns has also arised today additional $1000.00 reservists to be called up if needed but it's unclear at the moment you know whether they will be a ground offensive and when it will be and whether there will be one what about efforts to end the fighting we know there are mediators from egypt in the u.s. on their way to is real how much hope is there for diplomacy. but at the moment and looks like that neither side is backing down but what we've seen in previous rounds of hostilities it's mostly it's egypt it's the u.n.
10:06 pm
it's other activists that try to mediate a cease fire or cessation of hostilities between hamas the militant groups in gaza and israel but at the moment it's unclear whether this is happening behind the scenes and whether those boring parties actually interested to and this and in time soon and we know there is domestic unrest in israel there have been disturbing scenes of violence between israel's jewish and arab communities and how are people reacting to those attacks. well the police here is bracing for more violence actually tonight and my way here was in television also a lot of police yeah on the street. people are very soft i talked to different people and you could say people from all the communities yeah very shocked at something that is on precedent it and that's one city in central israel there's
10:07 pm
a curfew tonight this also additional border police troops deployed and people are just simply shocked to see such loss of control so to speak and it's not just in one location it's actually across the country in many of the mixed cities ok.d. to be used on ukraine with the latest in tel aviv tonight tanya thank you. and to talk more about the unrest on israeli's streets i'm joined tonight by. she's the director of the serling institute for jewish studies in modern israel at michigan state university it's good to have you on the program we've heard a lot of commentators especially coming out of israel saying that the street violence that we're seeing between is really arabs and jews that street violence is unprecedented do you agree. yes in many ways it is and it's especially tragic because just to see evening. there was supposed to be an
10:08 pm
agreement for a new a coalition government that included this really arab party led by mansoor abbas and there was supposed to be kind of historic new. unprecedented good news this evening where the for the 1st time his own history there would be an arab party in the coalition government to they've always been multiple arab israeli parties in the knesset but not in the coalition government itself so it's going to be and president good news this evening and unfortunately things have unraveled and that doesn't seem like that's going to happen either that the coalition government do or do we know what is fueling this violence that we're seeing inside israel. again you know it's especially tragic because as your audience knows certainly some of the demonstrations in jerusalem. a days ago kind of preceded this and in some of
10:09 pm
those demonstrations it was actually jewish israelis and arabs really marching together and actually participating together in some of those demonstrations and now it's come to this communal violence i would like to say that the vast majority of arab israelis and the vast majority of jewish israelis are not participating and communal violence against each other luckily there are still isolated and incidents in terms of injuries or people being killed through that violence and therefore that certainly is concerning and has the possibility of escalating but on the other hand one should also always look at things and concepts and comparatively and certainly riots in paris or other things over the years were were even greater to some extent so it's certainly very concerning but we also want to see it in context and there's also a connection of course to the larger israeli palestinian external conflict that's
10:10 pm
happening between gaza and israel which inflames it there are issues of the pandemic which inflames it which has been a year of frustration and challenge and hardship for everyone in the world but including in israel and including minority populations in israel of course israeli arabs are 20 percent of the israeli population there has been there inequalities in the country as they are in germany in the united states and other democracies that strive for equality but haven't achieved it so there are those and equality issues in israel and there are also issues of within the arab society that there has been increased calls for a lack of attention to crime and inequality and lack of resources in those communities so actually that. is one of the reasons why these this particular israeli air party was going to agree to be part of the coalition government said it couldn't arrest these internal issues it is quite a turn of events isn't it there was supposed to be good news announced today in
10:11 pm
israeli politics and instead we're talking about the possibility of this domestic violence maybe slipping into civil war how likely do you think that possibility. i don't think it's likely i mean things are always possible but i would say it's unlikely that it's going to break into a civil war but nevertheless it's highly concerning. and and luckily some leaders leaders of different city as a mayor's leaders era political parties leaders of israeli parties are being responsible and calling for who are. calling for kind of constructive ways of fighting for the necessary equality that that should exist in the society. but not all leaders are are being responsible
10:12 pm
in calling for these things and of course it's exacerbated by the conflict now between hamas and gaza and israel and so the quicker that there's a ceasefire between gaza and israel the quicker that that that maybe one of things that could calm things down internally in israel and so we're hoping for for an end to the violence on both ends and that's actually a legitimate demands be met through peaceful protests and through working through the system to create a more equal society. a runoff from michigan state university joining us tonight we appreciate your time and your insights thank you. thank you or tensions from the israeli palestinian conflict they have spilled over to cities around the world including right here in germany there have been renewed protests
10:13 pm
against israel's military operation in several cities with over 1500 people gathering in the northern city of greyman there have also been fresh incidents of vandalism targeting synagogues german police detained more than a dozen men suspected of damaging a synagogue in the western town a bomb and starting a fire at a jewish memorial site in the city of dusseldorf. for more let's talk to our political correspondent benjamin gruber good to see you again frenchwomen how is germany reacting to these attacks but if the new band several polluted sions have joined the national the premium health or western state north rhine-westphalia well several of those and some with the attacks happened to curate . this week we have also from the religious side the president of the central council of jews in the city was horrified by these numbers and he sat that this man was and had absolutely nothing to do with expressing political opinions but what it
10:14 pm
needed by pure anti semitism and that conflict leader joined him as well saying that we cannot allow a political conflict to be legal to where religious fanaticism and your thoughts for a constant state of the jews living in germany and wherever definitely their own people and which to direct criticism of the state of israel certainly has been brought condemnation off these anti-semitic attacks that are still on the rise here in the country between our german authorities are they doing enough to prevent the growing anti-semitism in the country. the risk growing criticism not only to authorities but also to police to intervene when the rallies were there and snakes floors let's remember the not isolated events in october of last year the worst one year after that terrible attack on the set gong in the eastern fellows of how did they have genitals domestic security service is wrong to germany is experiencing
10:15 pm
a steep rise and semitism and the german government feels that while this conflict and the middle east they were witnessing are also getting worse the best will also happen here so there are clips on one side to call it what awaits these are not anti israel protests that anti-semitic protest when blacks were example of breaded proud to say thank god for this one that really is an online that also happens to call it what it is anti semitism angelus or bring those people to justice sometimes they want to be a big protest here and there and then let's see how they call it churches react to that when there are again and use the media floors or attacks ok to use benjamin alvarez gruber with the latest tonight spectrum as always thank you. well here are some other stories now that are making headlines around the world colombia's foreign minister clarity of bloom has resigned following international condemnation of a police clamp down on anti-government protesters at least 42 people have been killed
10:16 pm
in clashes between police and demonstrators the protests were triggered by a proposed tax reform that had since morphed into water anti-government rallies it's afghanistan has begun a 3 day ceasefire to mark the muslim festival of the it follows a sharp rise in violence despite no direct fighting between the taliban and government forces roadside bombs have killed at least 11 civilians in the united states the centers for disease control is no longer recommending facemask for fully vaccinated people but the c.d.c. says masks are still recommended in crowded settings like buses planes and hospitals over half of the u.s. population has received at least one dose against the corona by sea. one of the common symptoms of covert 19 is the loss of smell and taste most people regain their senses not long after being infected for some the loss lingers but there is

a tiny bit of something but i don't know the smell. that's frustrating and makes me a bit sad. sure michelle my yard can understand very well how are the cards feeling the frenchman lost his sense of smell due to an accident 5 years ago it's the smell of his children he misses most but mayor does not want to give up his passion for cooking. a bit of color is good we eat with our eyes after all a bit like the great chefs in france are doing it but it is the nose with its millions of factory cells that defines the taste of this element after his accident may i was angry because no one could help him even if an estimated 5 percent of the french population suffers from a distorted sense of smell but with time his anger gave way to an idea he founded

10:21 pm
a single tweet how is that even possible well you know it almost has a long history of making unexpected and quite a rage is claimed on twitter and i think this one definitely belongs in the top 3 you know much has long been one of the world's staunch as proponents of crypto currencies back in february he announced that tesla had bought $1500000000.00 worth of bitcoin a month later in march he announced that you can now buy a test the with bitcoin in the weeks after we saw big point share prices just shoot up to an all time high the decision to accept that coin though has been quite controversial and come under fire from investors environmentalist alike who rightly pointed out ascii hurt there that you know digital currency come with a massive carbon footprint according to the center for alternative finance run by cambridge university bitcoin alone uses more electricity each year than entire countries made such as malaysia or sweden well i mean it makes sense then that
10:22 pm
you've got the c.e.o. of the world's leading manufacturers of electric vehicles siding with the environmentalists and not with the energy goes lawyers yet even though it's not quite clear that that's really what changed his mind after all this is the same elan musk who once wiped $14000000000.00 off of tesla's market value after tweeting that he thought that the company's stock price was too high you know frankly a lot of people are wondering what led to must about face this time around on bitcoin you know the fact that cryptocurrency these are not exactly eco friendly that's nothing new what makes this even more eyebrows raising i think is the fact that must pass demonstrated not quite the same amount of concern for the environment when it comes to some of these other projects i mean take his aerospace company space x. you know. last year alone it launched some 25 rockets in space that's more than any other company and that release roughly 4000 tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere
10:23 pm
that's the equivalent of flying from paris to new york and back 1000 times right here in germany some 50 kilometers away from where we're sitting musk has come under fire from environmentalist force new gigafactory that you may recall notices billed as factories the most environment friendly production plant of electric vehicles in the world but building that factory meant clearing nearly $100.00 hectares of forest and early estimates suggest that it will use you know as much water as a small city we know that he knows how to get people talking about him so what are we what are we to make of this story it's not quite clear at this point you know to some evil and must i think is this 21st century mad genius and 2 others he's really seen as the 2nd coming as a lot of disciples who hang on to his every word is every tweet and the reason
10:24 pm
online survey found that almost 4 in 10 of respondents said that they had made investment decisions based on his tweets and so i think the conclusion here is you know the fact that one man wheels this amount of influence over a product like straight point that really just shows how volatile crypto currencies are and why it's likely to take years if not decades before they're considered even remotely a viable alternative to the currency that we deal with today or maybe people are just putting too much into the tweets that they read you know does teeters always they will be a 1st that's right. for the 2020 olympic games are still set to take place in tokyo this summer but the pandemic has put many hurdles in the way about fleets hoping to compete tonight we meet a 27 year old boxer who's had to put her dreams on hold. research but a 1st picked up the boxing gloves to get in better shape but the sport began to inspire her beyond that in after a year or 2 but it was a national champion in japan the nurse by day dedicated herself for years to
