100 years since dozens, or possibly hundreds of african americans were killed by a white mob. bite and says that rights for black americans are still under assault to this day, are now the survivors of the tulsa massacre over 100 years old, but never in their long life. have they seen a president commemorate the event? president biden held a minute of silence in tulsa to remember a black community that was subjected to one of the worst racial attacks in us history for much too long. the history of what took place here was told in silence, cloaked in darkness. but just because history is silent, it doesn't mean that it did not take place. in 1921, a mob of white people looted and burned tulsa's,

thriving greenwood district. a proper count of the dead was never completed. but some estimates say hundreds of black americans were killed. those now living in the cities say the president's visit was vital for racial justice. and it's important because there's a beginning of admittance. there's a beginning of, let's speak on these things and let's try to deal with this so that we can grow and move forward. we need his presence. we'd need for people to continue to learn about the race massacre and to continue to invest to really help us move forward. we're looking back is one thing, but thinking about what's next is sort of the big part of it. like, what are we going to do to make things right? what are we going to do to improve our community? biden has said clear of a commitment for reparation to survivors and their descendants. that says his administration is aware that more needs to be done to address racial qualities. and we are joined now by d. w reporter stacy evans and safety as we've heard biden the 1st sitting us

president to visit this site. since the tulsa race massacre took place, 100 years ago says here, is this finally getting the attention that it deserves? yes, finally, slowly, it's been too long. a lot of people would say, an order for this to come to light. there are so many americans, as i'm sure, you know, have never heard about tulsa in greenwood and about this thriving african american community. had doctors and lawyers, a post office hospital, everything that you need for a community to be home. and over 2 days and angry white mom massacred people. there are hundreds of black bodies in the street. they've, they've on earth a, a mass grave that they've been asked escalating as of late and they burned down everything. and when you took this part of the reason why the story is so important, is that it puts a light on what's really happened with the black community when it comes to the

wealth gap, which is what bite and was talking about. how can you pass down generational wealth when you're not allowed to build and you're not alive to thrive? in this case also shows about systematic racism. when people say it doesn't exist. well, you had firefighters that didn't come to fight the fire. you had police that didn't arrest anybody, and even the media focused on the 3 white death and not on the destruction of this community. so it's very important now that this story is told and that other stories are told, not just for the black community, but for healing, for other, for white people to realize that black people aren't lazy parasites, they don't want to work. they have been working, they've been trying, but they're up against so many on how about justice because, i mean, the, the issue of reparations has always been brought up. example when it comes to incident and others as well. you know, biden had something to say about that, just phyllis and when it comes to justice, it's about healing. and when you, when you acknowledge a wrong,
8:06 am
then people are stuck will are able to start to heal and you're able to move on. one of the things that i've been oppressed about being in germany is like the 1st time i came here was 2006. and i saw all the markers that were dedicated to the jewish people who were ripped from their home and that were murdered. and in language class, as you learn about this, there was an acknowledgment about something that happened here. that was dreadful. and united states has been very slow to do that. and justice for these people, i mean, you can arrest the people who committed these crimes. but justice is giving reparations to their defendants. justice is not why washing history, but actually acknowledging what was happening and give people non white people who have contributed to this country. there do. and the president we know has, has promised to look into that he has fallen short however of

a commitment. so we will see how this, how this indeed develops reporter safety and thank you. you're welcome. and here are some other stories making headlines around the world is rarely politicians battling to unseen prime minister benjamin netanyahu have until midnight on wednesday to put together a coalition. secular centrist, you are, le pete, is leaving the post to form a government composed of bitter ideological rivals. if they succeed, it would end a total 15 years in office for israel's longest serving president. molly has been suspended from the african union after the 2nd crew in less than a year in the west african country colonel missy gota led the opera uprising last weekend has since been named transitional president. the african union has threatened sanctions if a civilian government is not restored. well,
