the ah, this is the w news live from berlin. germany is far right. fails to shake up the political order and a key regional electron latest poll show the popular tennessee germany party is beaten by angle americans. conservative will have the result and the reaction ah, ah, i'm and you could mckennan welcome to the show. germany far right appears to have failed and it's attempt to send shockwave the cross, the political landscape, and a regional election. polls have just closed in the eastern state of saxony on the

far right, a f. b party hope to win a surprise victory over the annual max. conservative in the final major test before september the general election. but exit poll put the chancellor policy comfortably ahead in the regional vote. and voting has now ended. so let's look at the projected results based on exit polls taken throughout the day. we have an american conservatives, the c d. u at 36 percent. the a f d the far right a f d at $22.00 and a half percent. the socialist left party at 11 percent central left s p d at 8.5 percent. the environmentalist greens at 6.5 percent and the business friendly f t p at 6.5 percent. and talk about the significance of these results. i'm joined by the w political correspondent hands from here in the studio. and d, w. 's chief political editor,
6:02 pm
me here chris matthew joined us from the book, the capital of saxony. i'm how and mikayla i am going to start with you. if i may angle america, c, d, u has emerged from this election well ahead of b. s. d. yet saxony is a relatively small german state. why does this regional electron masses so much? oh, 1st of all, because the last big test ahead of those historic collections will can already say when the gl america will come to an end on the 26th of september, when germany choose it, who will succeed in the chancery. and this is quite a remarkable victory for uncle michel party, which again, whopping 6 percent. if the exit polls and i stress their only exit polls at this very moment in time, there's a lot of post about a thing going on here and really translate into actual election result. it means that the rise has been posted. it's like the receding, but to make no mistake,
6:03 pm
you become the 2nd largest posse here once again in the election. so clearly they are here to day. the most interesting aspect beyond that is that the green may have gained some percentage points here, but they're getting some competitions from the pro business free democrats. so the rise of the green is not here in the bank with the i think we will. i'm sorry. and again, i'm sorry to interrupt you, please go ahead. it looks like that's right. and the greens that we've seen in national polls throughout, with a lot of speculation that they could become the strongest political. that's certainly not taking place here in sacks, in the unhealthy greens now have to fear that they might not be asked to take part in the next government. currently there's a coalition between the conservative,
6:04 pm
i'm going to be due, the social democrats and the greens. they may well be replaced by pro business re democrats, and that would put quite a damper on that campaign. so a very interesting scenery here on to set back quite clearly for the far right and the promise. now, obviously many thought the a f d policy would win and could win. what is it that the c d u is offering that the a f d couldn't well, it's offering the law. who is the state for many incumbent? tier 2, according to polling throughout by far was the most popular politician. that's something he's worked with over the past is he wasn't that high in the chart the a couple of years ago, but he was the brand name of the conservative you and this is much, much needed booze for army lesson the see the leader wants to succeed i'm going to

macro real in the general election. the preference here within his own party was someone else whose mock food from bavaria. i'm, unless it was seen a bit of a compromise candidate. mr. will give him a much needed boost and more credibility going into that talk phase of the election campaign for september. taylor sign comes, i'm going to come over to you now. what does the cds victory mean on a national level? and of course, looking ahead to these very important elections, the general election in september. the most important aspect obviously, is what material has been mentioning that there is some uncertainty in the c d. you how it's going to perform without anger marco. and here it now has a significant victory in a small estate in germany. that's not really of very, very big significant concern terms of the number of voters for the whole of germany, but still it is an important boost. it's the last test before the elections in
6:06 pm
september. so that will give a cd. you a lot more confidence at the same time. we are obviously looking at the performance of all the other parties, how well they are doing or how badly the greens have improved their standing a little bit in sex and the unheard, but not quite as much as they might have hoped. so for them this will be a bit of a damper, i think, but it is a rural, mostly rural kind of country or state. and they are not that many urban areas where the greens are particularly strong. so they might say this is not in the and not of such great significance. and then of course they are the questions about the a, f d. how's going to perform elsewhere in germany? that is very difficult to say from these results because it is particularly strong in these areas of a former german east, east, germany and but it has been showing a lot of weakness elsewhere and the free democrats, the business,
6:07 pm
frenzy party. they are hoping to be decisive in future coalition discussions, also under the national level in germany. and they will have taken this resolved as a boost for themselves and their chances to determine what a new government in germany as a whole might look like. you know, there's been a lot of interest in this election not only with in germany, but also from outside of germany. how relevant is this result internationally? well, i think the relevance here concerns the, the, the power, right, right wing extremists, we have to say this is one of the key areas in germany in the center of germany, of early in this state. but in other former eastern states in hearing it, for instance, they are also very strong. but they have in their key area that have not shown the kind of strength that they probably would have expected. so in those terms, it's a good sign for the rest of germany that the f d seems to be weakening,
6:08 pm
especially here, and it's in its co area. okay, hold on and mikaela will be back to you soon. what we're going to do now is cross over to the regional headquarters of the and we'll be crossing over to the regional headquarters of the a, f d in a moment. but 1st we're going to have a look at why the a s d was thought to pose such a threat to the christian democrats in eastern germany. therefore, it is an idyllic little town. one of germany's largest medieval castles sits right in its center. life is tranquil here. there is hardly any crime. may 2021 was campaigning season, hands to my station. i represents the f. d. the local council, as well as an accident and her state parliament. one of 3 people in care for his voted for the a f d in the past. taishan, i'd have an over voters with messages they play. well here we will introduce free

day can free school lunches. we will also started a petition offensive and immediately depart, all immigrants who don't have a residency permit, or they get through the blanket prejudices of the sorry about immigrants and refugees from considerable support. you basically the take far enough, for example, because foreigners have more special rights here than we germans do. and that's not okay. yet there hardly and far enough to be found. this can be traced back to the history of germany. the german democratic republic or de the art was a separate country from the rest of germany until 990. and it was a socialistic tissue. authoritarian and militaristic social diversity was not desired. immigration was only rarely allowed. the g r citizens of us through the government, germany was re unified, but the economy and social infrastructure of the pharma east germany collapsed. many people felt that they were let down and had lost out
6:10 pm
a sentiment that continues to shape the social climate. in that 120, over the last 25 years, we have observed that many young people who were very mobile and had a d, a for shaping their own life. decided to leave east and germany for social, economic, and cultural reasons. and those who stayed here, even the younger generation tends to be the ones who are most cautious, the most fearful. perhaps even the ones most likely to articulate these prejudices . and these are exactly the people the a reaches out to us. for tyler article young are using some even for the d. b s d, cause them claiming to be the party that will solve all their problems. but they also act devices. like when we rule the country one day, then i promise you, these shady mobs will have another thing coming. and then
6:11 pm
a new day will dawn for you if the voters don't mind radical speeches and they don't mind the fact petitioner has ties to right. we need streamers. on the contrary, what they want here is the party who rejects what democrats, germany stands for, culturally diverse society and he w correspondent, belgium, and benjamin alvarez group is the alternative in germany party headquarters. in fact, me, i'm hired benjamin how the biggest surprise is this results to the a f c? it was surprising, especially if you consider some old shows the foreign ac party and even before the candidate 70 percent law. i'm not surprised when the 1st was were shown here on the screen that you can see behind b when we saw that you had far more than i expected. but what politicians are
6:12 pm
saying, we need to be known to be one, morgan law line up inside of this body. and they said that they achieve this result . they still said that it's a success and says that they have been attacked by the press. and also by anti, but they said that they retained a similar and outcome to the elections considered if we compare it to the last one . so they still say the success, even though if impulse even showed it in the lead against the conservative options at the body. now the see in saxony unhide is further to the right even than the, the national level. do you think that played against them in their selection? if we compare what he has done in this, in this, in text money and how compared to other stages, palmer radical and palm or national listing. and if, for example, if hockey was just talking a few minutes ago,
6:13 pm
he's known to be one of the hotline us inside of the party. and that's why they try to get a lot of voters. but as you can see, as we can say, they try to show this also as a success compared to 4 years ago. and they thought they would get a message that had a federal elective symbolic. this would be the last, next is supposed to come back. so so would you say that this is significant for the f, the also on a national level it is. it is significant. and the roles that they showing to show themselves as victims, they repeated, they've been attacked that they, are they position party, no other opposition party that has been attacked as hard as them. so it's significant. they try to get these crews with it last regional election before september, the vote, the expected a better election resolved and fulfill the party here will not be as long as they
6:14 pm
hope to be. w correspondent, benjamin alvarez group and we're going to go straight back to d w. keep political episode, chris know who's in sex and he has capital, not the book and we still got hands front with us here in the studio. mikaela in the last election in 2016 the f b came out of nowhere, it made huge games. come we now say that that was the one victory not quite the law slightly, but they certainly established that they are forced to reckon with although all other parties rule out going into coalition with them. so that leaves them somewhat sidelined and they also seen and they being closely monitored by state authorities, particularly here in the state of facts me and health because they are under suspicion of oxy questioning and potentially endangering the democratic structure of germany here. so they are seen as the extreme end of the fall, rise a f

b party. and the other side of this is oliver. that top cons that he is saying that he can speak freely in the state here and in the east. so that says quite a lot about the political culture, the a f t particularly here in sexy and help stands for. but that is not rain did, but there was no automatic father. right. and i think that that significant gain by i'm going to mac calls see to you, which is very much signer has a loss of policy, the incumbent state premier. it shows how important personality politics is here right now. because going to has enough, has the largest following and tons of people who want him to remain state premier. so in other policies interestingly at, and that is appointed toward what will now matter in less than 4 months of national
6:16 pm
election campaigning leading up to september. here i mean, last it the c d u candidate wants to succeed angle america, not just as part of the the, but also as chancellor. this is a much needed success for him. that he now potentially can build on at the same time, the a, f d, as shown that that was not flashing the pan coming out of no where getting almost a quarter just around about 22 percent is a significant chunk of the electorate. so given the cds success in this electron looking ahead to the general election in september, is it looking? is it looking good for the c d. u was much needed success for the consulting cpu party, which had declined in the national opinion, polls recently. and at the same time, it will raise a couple of eyebrows looking at the performance of the green party, which gained here slightly. at the same time,
6:17 pm
the pro business free democrats are gaining so that germany is not just one big maps. that's what will matter in those general elections, but there are regions particularly here where there's a lot of alternative energy being produced through a wind mills. when those are here, wind energy is being produced. lawson, saxony, and that doesn't mean that people feel that getting the benefit from it, and it doesn't mean that people vote green. so it's going to be rather complex and more complex equation than many, probably a thought to pick in the greene county. and i thank you, hands of michelle was saying that this is a really important time in politics. there's a lot of change happening and of course i'm going to michael will not be standing in the elections in september. how major shift will this be for, for german politics? what's, what's really significant about german politics at the moment is that there are no
6:18 pm
longer overarching the strong parties that, that we have a spectrum of political parties that all have a significant support. but there's no one particular party that has that sort of majority that the christian democrats, or at some stage the social democrats used to have in the decades that have gone costs. so all parties are more or less in a similar sort of spectrum of support. and that means that we're going to have a lot of possibilities of forming code coalitions. the question of what party needs to find support with other parties and what kind of government is going to emerge out of that is really what's significant. so the social, i mean, the christian democrats, the conservatives of angle america might end up still being the strongest party with the most support. but they will be far from having a majority. they will need coalition partners. so all the other parties trying to
6:19 pm
jockey for position so that they can participate in a future addiction. for instance, here in saxon, the honor we have recently until now had a coalition between the conservatives, the social democrats and the greens. it's now possible that this coalition will change to one between the sessions and the crust. the concert is the social democrats and the free democrats, the pro business party. these kinds of ships will be taking place on a national level in germany that's, that's for sure. so the jockeying between the 2nd rank parties really is what we're going to be looking at. and what about the effect of the a s d on on german politics? i mean, is it going to push the cd? you further to the right? potentially, that's been a very, very significant discussion within the c d, within the conservative party and sucks in the analog where we, having this election today is a very good example for this infection. the another worst sectors of the
6:20 pm
conservators who are prepared to cooperate more closely on an issue by issue basis with the a f d. that went so far that the interior minister in the federal states and considered some sort of cooperation with the s d and was kicked out of his job by the current premier. that seems to have paid off this very strong position taken by the christian democrats, by the con. so this is in facts in the unheard which is also the position taken by the party at a national level named the that there should be no consideration at all of cooperation with the far right. that seems to be paid off in the selection. and i imagine that's in the national election that will also be a position taken very strongly by the conservative v as political correspondent transferring front with me in the studio and d. w. as chief political mission, electricity in saxony. and how, thanks so much for joining us. ok, let's have another look at the projected results based on exit. polls taken

throughout the day. the cd you have 36 percent the far right. the $22.00 and a half percent. the socialist left party 11 percent the centre left, s p d 8 and a half percent the environmentalist greens, 6.5 percent and the business friendly f t p 6.5 percent the now moving on to some other news, armed attackers have killed more than 130 civilians in the west african nation of bacchanal authorities believe islamist millison were behind the massacre. it took place in the village of sol hahn in the northeast near the border with nature. and if the deadliest attacks and mister violent erupt it in 2015, the fight thing has displaced more than 1000000 people in between us. so
