are exploring the delving into history and the present. i would never have thought that could be lived open and so i could remind myself because i grew up in a completely different way. rod, it's early jewish in europe. the 2 port documentary starts july 5th on d w. i did a show coming up today. the impact of a new pandemic, one an old 119 has made access to people harder around the world, while the exact impact has yet to be measured. we ask if there are lessons over $900.00 offered for the fight against aids plus a food feud over boss buffy,

something that you open up to your parents with francis lives in manila, he looks back on a still young life that has changed permanently. i've probably had sex with more than a 100 guys a guess. even before i was in, i could, i was say for the after a kind of late do a lot of crazy things. my name is francis and i was only maintenance or when i was diagnosed with h i v. he faced a bleak future. but today he's one of the lucky ones, getting the medication he needs. unlike half of the countries people living with h, i v. and now coded 19 is making the fight against h i. v aids even harder. last year under corona virus locked downs h i v testing filled by 60 percent in the philippines, health care providers had to

a death. our approach is always comprehensive. and in order to ensure that the space on to be men and always access prevention, commodity piece to avoid new infections of h, i v need up and peer educators still reach out to groups at risk. and during lockdown. h i v patients can get their medication in the mail to help people like francis. i have learned that i am not alone in this fight. i also hope that indefinite views in the near future. young people will not be afraid of h i v anymore. but the corona virus is far from beaten and its effect on the global effort to fight h i. v aids are likely to continue. and for me on this, i'm john arbor professor, doctor hendrix, drake, the director of the institute of biology and research at the university of bon professor strick. how much for set the coven 1900 pandemic bean to worldwide
7:34 pm
efforts to contain h. i. v aids. well, we can't really proceed right now. what actually the impact of the corporate $900.00 pandemic is on h or be an 8th at what we know already is that individuals do not get tested that be in some countries they don't receive anymore. they enter or didn't receive for why the entryway from medication, and we're seeing and drop in the prep uptake on prevention programs. so overall, we can probably see in one or 2 years, but the real impact of the corporate 19 pandemic will be. but we will probably see an uprise in h, i v and aids where i'm wondering if there is a silver lining to all of this. i mean, i'm wondering, i'm looking at the speed of research or uncovered vaccines, for example. i mean, are there any lessons here for the fight against h. i. v. aids. well,
7:35 pm
the cooper 19 pandemic has shown us that we can be fig adeline, and highly infecting and compact combating and new virus. and it has also shown us that the can that the community, the scientific union and if he can come to that come together and walk be then really find that big themes worldwide. we have a 15 already being licensed and 30, you have reached the final stage of testing. in contrast, less than 8 bits or 8 big themes, have been tested against h, i v, and aids in 30 years. imagine now where we could stand if you pooled human capacities and actually do the same for h, b, and 8th. you think of me and of axiom is going to be a reality. and if so, how far, how far away are we from this reality?
7:36 pm
so there's no doubt, 1st of all that the corporate 900 response was actually fools by h b a by years of a to be in a research for example, that the virus platform boss develop for h b m 8th. and we currently have to try to ongoing that using this platform to test an h of the big scene and they already show promising results in monkeys. furthermore, the on a platform has been tested in monkeys and they're also showed promising results. so i think that an effective 16 can be possible, but we really have to push on that this envelope and really and try to stop a to be in a by finding a vaccine. i know it's going to be possible. the question is, how quickly would you like to put a time limit on this? this is so hard to say, it's almost impossible to predict the vaccine that's going to work or not. but the
7:37 pm
good news is that one of the vaccine 5, even though the results, this is still this year. so the results will be on blind this year. so we will know at least better. one of the, you know, virus platform will work or partially work against h and b in 8th. we have about 40 seconds a last question do this week. you are an ant director. we need be an yama. so we can end aid to the public touch by 2030. do you think that's possible? well, i think we can end at the pandemic already with the tools we have. the strongest tool is testing and treating. so if you're testing everyone who is h, i v positive and treating them, they conference met the virus to another person, and they can have a normal life expectancy. so ending aids really for clinical picture of h i b, is possible to end a death bone cure a chevy. this is a little bit more difficult. pleasure talking to your professor,

a year. my pay and american president joe barton, is currently on his way to europe for talks, and he said he wants to raise taxes on the rich. so does the tax code need a complete overhaul? well, by then has been delivering that clear message already during his political campaign as we signed the report for the election of last year and his message to the highest. nor is it here in the, in the united states. is he and has always been that he's going to raise their taxes. this is something he adopted from the progressive in his party and they are called for the one percent to pay their fair share on income taxes. which keep in mind and make that to buy, that has been spending a lot of save money for the coven stimulus packets. now he's planning a big infrastructure reforming the united states, and that will cause again, at least a trillion dollar. so he has to get money into the pay treasury and the tax code might have to be changed. but raising the tax rate on billionaires might be
8:06 pm
a quick way to get money into the state treasury for now. and i guess there needs to be some political momentum for that. so my next question is, what has the reaction been in the united states? these revelations are members of the congress are calling now for internal revenue service to investigate how this information was leaked. but for progressives, this has given more prove to why they have been calling for a long time already for the revamp of the texas. and democrats have also said that they want to recall the trump tax cuts from the year 2017. that lowered tax rate for the old, her wealthy by joys type majority in congress. it doesn't really seem like this is going to happen anytime soon. ok d w as carefully that she will in washington d. c. thanks so much. a russian court is considering

a few films. they're going to be shown here. we're going to see all 15 of the petition, film, se, building all had its official competition online only in march this year. so those films are going to be shown for an audience for the 1st time, a live audience for the 1st time. and then we have sort of the winners of all the other sections of the valley knowledge, sort of sort of a best of that have been picked to be shown for the berlin audience. because that's really what this summer special's about. it's about the actual audience, the actual ordinary movie fans here in berlin that have been starved of the real movie experience for so long for over a year. now. ok, this is if memory serves 71st barely, now, has there ever been anything like this? it's history. well, no, not really. i mean, it would brilliant initially did start as a summer festival. well, even before my time in the sort of fifty's and sixty's before it was then moved to the winter months. so since then in the last decades, we've never had anything like this, and you thought of
8:14 pm
a summer celebration of cinema here in berlin. and of course we've never had an open air festival, which is this, this one is going to be because of cobit restriction. so i'll be really interesting to see how the berlin audience embraces this festival and all the interest to see if we can really pull it off because this is a 1st time event. and there are, of course, a lot of security and safety issues concerns around cope. it's still so we'll have to see if berlin can manage to pull it off. well, if berlin does pull it off and the public embraces, could we see something similar in the future? we'll see the festival said this is a one off event and they're not planning to do this again. but i really actually hope that we do see something like this in the future because one thing i've always missed during the valley nala is the great summer weather, the great experience of summer in berlin, that you miss, of course, in february when you have a film festival here. so let's hope that this really works and that the public
