5:03 pm
alexi navarro me, are using geneva to remind people what putin can do to his enemies. russia is also accused of being involved in recent cyber and ransomware attacks on the us, as well as interference in various elections for us president joe biden. this is about trying to rain in russia is more disruptive behavior. it's about making myself very clear what the conditions are to get a better relationship are with russia. we're not looking for conflict. we are looking to resolve those actions, which we think are inconsistent, international norms. both men have agendas. both men have the red lines and despite the tranquil surroundings, few here are expecting a research in us russian relations anytime soon. well,
5:04 pm
the w correspondent, terry shows in geneva for that so much. hi terry. and have you heard anything so far about how the talks are going? we don't really have an idea about how things are going inside the room other than the fact that they are now on to their 2nd meeting. the 1st meeting was just between the president and their foreign ministers and their secretary of state in the u. s. case, we now know that they're in a larger meeting with 5 eights on each side in addition to the presidents. so things are at least moving along. unlike the trump in helsinki, there will be other people in the room. so that of course helps when we want read out later of how things went and the on beyond between the 2 men, joe biden has been on a charm offensive. terry, we've had the g 7 summit in england and nato. and you meetings in brussels, of course, now all in the run off to this meeting has he succeeded in reassuring allies that
5:05 pm
america is back as he put us. certainly at nato, where i covered those meetings. he did succeed allies were very ready to hear this message, trying to erase the trauma of the trump years where he questioned whether the u. s . would even fulfill its article 5 obligations and come to the defense of an ally in case that were attacked. i think everyone really did did have the sense that the united states is aware of its obligations, which president biden even called a secret commitment to allies on the european union side of town. the reaction was much the same bite and even made a joke when he came into his meeting with shaw. michelle and ursula, underlying that, aren't you sick of seeing me? and they said, oh no, we're very happy to be working with you. so i think the charm offensive worked. there were still the question of how long the us will be. this trusted partner if, if that's the case after 4 more years, depending on who comes into the white house. but for now, everyone seems very happy to be working with the biden administration. all right,
5:06 pm
well let's move back to, of course, this meeting with president between biden and today, and of course. and now there have biden has promised he will set clear red lines. now how tense and are we expecting this meeting to be president biden? of course, it's called the president putin a killer. so i don't think that president putin is going into this meeting with any illusion of being treated with kid gloves. i think both men have tried to set expectations low that we're going to see any tangible outcomes. they're both going to assess each other and put down their positions, much of which are already public. so i think that it's really a get to know you meeting and also a chance for aids on both sides to get to know each other so that real work can continue. if everything goes well after the 2 men meet right now that we're protest in geneva against protein over the poisoning of opposition leader in me. how is president biden going to tackle that issue? do you think president biden has already put the president non notice speaking at
5:07 pm
nato headquarters most recently that he will hold the russian president responsible if the worst were to happen if alex enough only were to die in prison, which seemed much more likely a few weeks ago when his health was so ill and he was on a hunger strike, but certainly the united states is very interested in the state of election of only hits. not just an evolving is, of course, the way the russian government treats all opposition. protesters including journalists, and i think that president biden will be bringing them on the case up very high on the agenda in this meeting tonight. all right, we'll leave it there. d w. terry shows in geneva, thanks for your update. alright, well let's take a deeper look at this topic. i'm here in the studio with me and is our chief international editor richard walker. hi richard. now, us relations with russia have worse and since to 2016 election and claims, of course, of russian interference in those elections. howard the 2 nations getting along now,
5:08 pm
how would you describe? well, i mean, if we just have what had the ways that they describe it, the 2 sides both, you know, if there's one thing they do agree on, it's that relations between the us and russia, a pretty well at their worst state. since the end of the cold war and it's not as if the time since the end of the cold was being played, failing between them, there been a lot of of lows during that time. so i, there is a profound sense on both sides that there is really a state of kind of low level conflict between the 2 sides. for instance, in the cyber realm, which is ongoing and constant. and there's an understanding and didn't apprehension that if they don't find some mechanisms of communicating with each other about the situation of dealing with each other, not necessarily becoming friends, then there's a risk. the one of the many strands of conflict could actually bust into some kind of open, perhaps accidental conflict. and what you hear from both sides is also taken from the american side. they say they want their relationship with russia to be more
5:09 pm
predictable, more stable, and in an interview with american television, the last couple of days, vladimir putin also stressed that saying that, that is the most important thing in the relationship right now. just to kind of create the sense that this is not going to spin out of control. right? well, can they find the common ground on any of the issues that have led to the situation that you just described? well, it's going to be difficult and if we look at cyber, for instance, you know, this has been there many, many levels to the allegations kind of being bounced around about about cyber attacks, going in both directions. the trouble with cyber is that it's very difficult to talk about because of the levels of secrecy involved from both sides and also the fear of revealing vulnerabilities which could then be taken advantage of by the other side. so really kind of goes to this issue of trust that if you don't trust the other side, can you really go into dialogue?
5:10 pm
so the russians, for instance, repeated vladimir preaching, repeated the offer of, of trying to set up a dialogue on cyber late last year. that the americans having taken that out yet, and i think this issue of trust is a big part of that. with many voices in the united states. say we can't go into dialogue with the very country that he's constantly attacking us in this hybrid. so that's just one example, but i think if there's anything that can come out of this meeting, it will be if the 2 sides come out and they say we're going to get our team is our kind of expert level people to start looking at some of these areas of, in this area called strategic stability, trying to find ways that they can work together, identify steps that could be taken to try to stop some of these areas spinning out of control. and the way i described right now, do you think that they're going to have more success? president biden is going to have more success lang down these red lines. and perhaps that, that, with russia, that perhaps the european union as well. yeah,
5:11 pm
i mean, the, the european union is certainly struggle their relations with russia because it's in the even more difficult position than the americans visit the russia because of the simple proximity of russia. it's really on the doorstep. and sometimes the europeans can really feel sort of stuck a little bit in the middle between the 2 sides on this. so the united states have, does have a bit of a kind of luxury of distant. but if you look at us policy towards russia and the last few years has have the americans managed to change rushes behavior on things like crimea on, things like ukraine, on things like cyber attacks on things like syria, on almost anything you could name? no, they've failed. they've imposed sanctions on all sorts of aspects russian behavior . but it has not brought results. so i don't think you're going to see joe biden, necessarily waltzing out later and say, we've tracked it, you know, we've worked out our relationship with russia. it's not going to be like that, right? we'll leave it there. d w's chief international editor,
5:12 pm
richard walker. thank you for earlier and i was let's take a look at some other stories from around the world. it's an north korean leader kim young on has warned a possible shoot shortages at a meeting of his ruling workers. partial, he played what he called the 10th food situation on the chrome of ours pandemic. and on last year's typhoons came urged party officials to try and find ways of boosting the countries agriculture production. socialist candidate pedal castillo has claimed victory, improved presidential election. he ended, the lengthy vote, came to 44000 votes ahead of his right wing rival keiko de monte. she's pledged to fight the result which election authorities have not yet formerly announced india's iconic ties. michelle, the taj mahal has reopened after 2 months of being close to the public. the top tourist attraction was shot when a 2nd wave of corona virus infections swept the country. infections have declined to in recent weeks. gonzales and israel has launched airstrikes and the gaza strip
5:13 pm
. the 1st military flare up since last month to cross border fighting. the israeli military says it attacked him as compounds in response to incendiary balloons, launched from the palestinian territory authority to the balloons, caused around 20 fires in open fields. us carrier, southwest airlines have been trying to restore normal operations after a computer problem led to the constellation of some 500 flights and delayed 1300 others. the disruptions effected about half of southwest flights on tuesday. and airlines spokesman said a cyber attack was not suspected. of course a reckless p r. stunt or a climate awareness campaign gone horribly wrong. a greenpeace protester inches away from crushing in his propelled paragliding craft into the crowd shortly before kick off a tuesdays game between germany and france. as you can see here,
5:14 pm
in this video, the german activists were gliding into the open room stadium in munich. when his craft collided with wire supporting an overhead camera, he then lost control and hurled towards the ground, sending players and spectators running for cover before a crash landing on the pitch. at least 2 people were injured. while max merrill is a member of the dw sports team, and the man who shot that video, which has since been viewed by millions of people, that max hi good to see you. tell us about that incredible moment who witnessed inside the stadium last night? hi pablo. well it was real. i've never seen anything quite like it anywhere. really . especially a football match. i was just making my way to my seat, sat down, saw this man flying overhead and dropping a bowl, which we now know had the v. w logo with oil covered on it and the words kick out oil on it onto the pitch. i initially thought this was some sort of us
5:15 pm
a stunt to bring the match ball onto the pitch until he got very close to those wires. now i was there recently with a camera man who was flying a drone. then we noticed the wise and actually thought, oh, this quite dangerous. we need to be clear of that. he obviously either didn't know they were there or thought he could dodge them. we have heard the plan wasn't to land on the pitch, but he came about 10 meters in front of me, clipping some equipment, and also some people there, as he ripped his propeller off his back. and it was very surreal. a very dangerous and a real scary moment, but until a little while later, i still thought it with some sort of view for stuff gone wrong. certainly terrifying images were seeing there. how close was he to causing a whole lot more damage to people on property much i think very close. i mean like i say it was closer than it seems in the video i shot and he clipped some equipment . some of the dave re dropped on deviate shops, head the front coach. 2 people were treated afterwards for injuries. he himself was
5:16 pm
unscathed. we initially thought he might have broken ankle or something like that. we now know it's a 38 year old man from barton burton back here in germany, who was a greenpeace protester. and yeah, like i say, wasn't planning to land on the pitch, but he's now facing charges of grievous bodily harm. all right, we'll leave it there. max marilyn unit, thanks for that. a greenpeace has apologized for the incidents which it says was meant as a protest against the game sponsor, volkswagen in a tweet. the environmental n g o said that a technical issue with the power gliding craft had forced the protest her to perform an emergency landing, and that they didn't intend to disrupt the game or hurt anyone. the mind was taken into custody on the police in munich, say they're investigating the matter when i'm joined by mary on team. and from greenpeace, here in germany, home out, 1st and foremost, what was green p thinking? with regards this protest, what was the intention of having
5:17 pm
a paraglider over at the stadium? so this paraglider wanted to send a message to b, w, who's the main sponsor of the event, calling upon the company to accelerate its face out of climate wrecking petrol and view the course that was the intention. and what he wanted to do was actually flying over the stadium. and what happened was that there was a technical failure with a drive, so we could not get up and had to make the emergency landing, and therefore 2 people got injured. i just heard that they left the hospital and i'm very relieved to hear that, but i can only say we're very sorry me to germany office a full and unreserved apology to those were injured and impacted as a result of our protest. we got the pilot was forced to land inside because of the technical failure. right?
5:18 pm
well, we'll dis, perhaps lead to a change in how greet greenpeace approaches, how they perhaps organized protests in the future. maybe it appears that you know, in a stadium there are wires and cameras hanging over the page, which is almost common knowledge. today, will this lead to a change perhaps in green piece approaches and their protest. first of all, i can understand everyone who saw these images that we've just seen and felt threatened or not safe. and i just want to make, you know, bad me to take safety very seriously and will mound the full investigation into what went wrong. and we will fully cooperate with all relevant authorities. and of course we will discuss what that means to our activities. but just to make sure this must never ever happen again and, and the last 1020 years. that really didn't happen that because we used to train
5:19 pm
the activists very well. this was a very experience activists, and we will have certainly look into that. all right, we'll leave it there. i'm out here on team on from greenpeace, here in germany. thank you. thank you. well now to the matching question in unique last night, which saw germany hosting the world champions, france and in the end it was decided by an own go. veteran defender match almost reflected a pass into his own net. and that was all the help friends needed to sort of 3 goal was enough to give them a one. no victory. well, for german football fans to night started with a lot to look forward to after a year in which the pandemic rubbed them. of one of their great joys, they were happy just to get together again. there were tears and plenty of beers, but just one downside. the result, the euros mood has made its way to germany, around 500 friends, watch the game against france to this big and enduring birth due to the pandemic.
5:20 pm
it's been a while since they've been able to sit outside for the for, for their guys. got really, really great, just great and there's lots of people here and it makes everyone feel good. we've had a month for the month because you wouldn't have thought this would be possible. but it's amazing to somehow be back to normal cost. no monitor or give you my neck though, and i noticed that the moods still not quite there yet, but it's coming back slowly. when you're sitting here, you realize people are happy to watch germany again. but the good advice didn't last long. the match and start see, well with france, the better team and mat from all scoring and then go i mean honestly about i wasn't convinced by the 1st half your goal from home. it was not me back. it was that. and i believe in the team, and i hope we can come back in the 2nd half. the things didn't get better. france were simply too strong,
5:21 pm
and germany didn't really look like scoring the defense. well, they continue to hope it was not the end of the world. we love what know, and we have to explain what the name but the turn them and it's still wide open and i'm excited about doing well in the next match. below and all medical english, maybe that public viewing then finally to be allowed to watch the match on a big screen. i'd cruel. after everything that's happened, you can be together drinking beer. it's a dream. despite the defeat, there was still some to to take away to be able to watch football together again to get behind the team. and there's always the next game to look forward say well the ers have already seen their 1st result from today's matches as the 2nd round of the group stage gets under way. and it's surprising qualifier. finland was up against russia in st. petersburg. russia's alexei mead, untrue, managed,
