10:01 pm
hello, i'm claire richardson, a very warm welcome to the show. finance ministers meeting in italy have agreed on a global minimum corporate tax rate of 15 percent. the deal aims to stop countries setting low taxes to attract investment from multi nationals, especially tech giants who do business worldwide. the new umbrella tax could be enforce within 2 years. historic setting for a historic deal. finance ministers from the g 20 member countries came together in venice, including china, the u. s. and germany. the group represents the world's largest economies and it now has a common goal to set a minimum tax rate for companies of at least 15 percent. the minimum takes takes real great advantage for democracy and for the whole family

station. and it will give us a chance to do and he rates to the want to know just after we are fighting against corporate 19. and we are taking a lot of steps to fight against the house crisis to fight against economic crisis is absolutely necessary that we take this step. and i'm really, really happy that we are step on every major economy already. once the multinational corporations to pay a fair share of tax, take amazon, for example. business boom. during the pandemic last year. in germany alone, it saw 33 percent rise and sailed. but the online giant has not paid any corporate tax. that's because the pays taxes for all of a european business in the low tax country luxemburg. i'm an amazon ship much of the profit it makes in germany to knock somebody where it pays less than 15 percent in tax. from luxembourg, the profits then go to the usa. if
10:03 pm
a minimum tax rate comes in now, amazon would have to pay 15 percent in germany, 15 percent in luxembourg, and at least 15 percent in the us. but german corporations like car manufacturers, will also have to pay taxes wherever they do business going forward. the european union wants a similar tax treaty across the holy you, but so far, ireland, hungary and estonia are resisting, it's an enjoy. now by the w baron to rigor who is covering the g 20 meeting a for us in venice, branch of global tax reform has been under negotiation for years. how have they found the political will to strike disagreements now? well, the pandemic had actually, because all g 20 countries need money to pay the cost of the pandemic and the aftermath. and there was also a window of opportunity now because the new administration in the u. s. is

supporting this, you would text ideas and janet jones, the new minister of finance minutes of the as was the driving force behind this effort. and also the countries have decided that they need a new system for the digital age to get hold of the internet. companies and so for someone who is watching from home, can you help us understand a little better what the actual implications of this reform will be? well, big companies with a turnover of more than 20000000000 years a year, which are highly profitable. they will not be able to shift around revenues anymore and to avoid texas, they have to pay more taxes. and now the estimates at $150000000000.00 euros will be more in the coffers of the finance businesses. and on the other hand, there will be a minimum tax for many, many companies,
10:05 pm
whichever turn over over $750000000.00 euros. and this would apply to hundreds and thousands of companies. and it has to be paid in every country so that you can avoid it anymore. the business model of tech savings is gone. i wanted to ask you about that because certainly more money in some state coffers. but what does this mean for developing countries that have until now benefited from attracting more investments with those low taxes? these countries have to come up with other means then texas to attract businesses. and there are some cough outs in this, in this deal, and also some things you can do. you can substitute companies, you can give them other text benefits. but over all the business model, as we know it from taxation is over and it almost all tech savings subscribed to this plan, the only a few holdouts don't the bench rigor reporting for us from venice. thank you so

much. will nato and ukraine are wrapping up 2 weeks of military exercises in the black sea? the war games involve $5000.00 troops, plus dozens of ship and aircraft. commanders aim to signal the strength of the alliance to an increasingly assertive russia will be w, a correspondent and nic economy has been on board the u. s. destroyer ross, he sent us this report on operation fi brief from ukrainian port of odessa person ship shadow in the u. s. s. ros. this allied vessels and just a few kilometer distance here in international waters of the black sea joint us ukrainian excise nothing new, but this year is far from normal off the rushes unprecedented troop build up grains borders potential conflicts, the russian forces, especially what the sales training for is very definitely not something the u. s. navy wants to talk about crew members scrupulously. we're talking about russia even
10:07 pm
though much of their time spent monitoring russian activity around them. i don't sense that this is any different than any other exercise that we do or that we've done in the past. how far away from the nearest question right now, about 2 to 3 minus. what we have seen is russian fighter jets operating in international airspace. much in the same way that we've seen seabreeze participants operating in international airspace arresting, jet, making the present felt a reminder if anyone needed that. the united states insistence and freedom of access to instructional waters isn't an argument the cup, any ice in moscow use the black sea has its backyard and had complained of quote, provocative muscle flexing with 5000 troops, participating on land and sea. these u. s. ukrainian lead exercises may have been the biggest ever, but this still easily dwarfed by exercises russia holds in this part of the world involving tens of thousands of participants. down spoken message behind these war

games is. ukraine will be left alone for this on predictable neighbour russia. but what exactly happens when these foreign ships return home with nature membership ukraine no closer to becoming a reality. and the former security guarantees given ukrainian still have many good reasons to worry about their country's security. let's turn our attention now to some of the other stories that are making headlines at this hour. in ethiopia, the ruling party has won an overwhelming election majority. any vote that was held last month. that means current prime minister has secured a nother 5 year term in office. med is facing international criticism for military action during the conflicts in the northern t. great region workers have begun taking down the last of the fencing around the u . s. capital 6 months after the invasion by supporters of former president donald trump. 5 people died in the writing in january. the barriers will take 3 days to

remove. hundreds of protesters have gathered here in berlin to demonstrate against the government in iran. they want an end to the death penalty and the release of political prisoners. the campaigners also oppose iran's nuclear program, or haiti is asking the us and the united nations to send in troops following the assassination of its presidential vanelle. mcgee's. the interim government wants help guarding key international infrastructure. police have have for 17 suspects and killed a 3 others. former columbia and soldiers are among those detained. a suspects, meanwhile, are still on the run. louise was a fascinated in his home in the capital, a prince was bringing a journalist and rosa shone, who joined us from near the haitian capital for more. thank you so much for joining us. first, i want to ask you from where you stand, how has the situation of volved since the presidents assassination?
10:10 pm
well, there have been, as you said before, several people have been arrested 17 and told him to hasten americans. and 16 colombians and the number of how many have been killed is a little get should because it goes from 3 to 7. and the police is announcing the best still some at large. however, there are more and more voices coming out from everywhere saying it seems a little bit more complicated than the scenario that has been painted in the beginning. so it looks like that maybe there is a little bit more to the assassination than it seemed in the, in the beginning. and what is the latest on that? what have we learned from the investigations into who is responsible and how it may be a more complicated picture than previously thought? well, the government and the police is still insisting it was the command of mercenaries
10:11 pm
. now the families of the same people in columbia saying that no, that have been contracted to support the national police and not the honest to kill a president. and the colombian government is sending investigation team in order to help the patient to find out more what really has happened. okay, now on friday, we know that a group of law makers recognize the head of haiti's, dismantled senate just f. lambert as a provisional president, and that is of course, a direct challenge to the interim government. what can you tell us about what appears to be a brewing power struggle? well, it is like, oh it's, there is a power vacuum and everybody wants to become a president. you know, you have the senate. there are 10 members of the senate that are still there. 8 of the 10 members have signed this. there is illusion to have them sign this and the

reason they present them, i mean, quote unquote. mr. dan has also said that his prime minister would be the prime minister that has been nominated by the former president. now mister so that he is supposed to be sworn in between this afternoon and tomorrow. now it depends on the negotiations on the ground, but it looks like dr. show close the doctors. this is still being recognized by everybody to be the prime. and so you would say that he then has a broad swath of support as a legitimate leader of haiti. at this point, for the time being, it looks like it's ok. have a base journalist on rosa shown. thank you so much for joining us with that update
