11:18 pm
longest serving chancellor, since he would call here, is an exemplary life from groundbreaking service to germany. and i might add, limited from the bottom heart to the world on behalf of the united states. thank you for your career of a strong principal leadership and thank you for speaking out for what is right and for never failing to defend human dignity. thank you for your continued support for the long standing goal of your poll, free and at peace. you run a stalwart champion of the trans running alliance, the atlantic partnership, under your chance to ship the friendship and cooperation between germany, united states has grown stronger and stronger. and i'm looking forward to celebrating more at our dinner this evening. but today was very much a working for some work on i covered
11:19 pm
a wide range of issues where germany and united states are working to advance is shared gender. we discussed together with our fellow major democracies at the g 7 germany, united states have responsibilities to lead with our values as to the other members of nato. and today i've, i've confided that in our new washington declaration, which we've codified a document affirming our commitment to the democratic principles at heart that are at the heart of both of our nations and how we will apply them to meet the biggest challenges of today. and tomorrow, both our nations, both our nations understand, imperative of proving that democracies can deliver the needs of our people. in the 2nd quarter,
11:20 pm
the 21st century. we will stand up for democratic principles and universal rights. when we see china or any other country working to undermine free and open societies, and we are united, united and our commitment to addressing democratic backsliding, corruption funding populism. in the european union or among candidates for the membership or anywhere we find it in the world. we agree and the importance of further integrating the western balkans into the european new european institutions and in our continued support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of ukraine. as well as the continued importance of reforms in the support of their euro landing aspirations. we stand together and will continue to stand together to defend our eastern flight allies at nato, against russian aggression. while i read in my role,
11:21 pm
i reiterated my concerns about nor stream to samson merkel are absolutely uniting our conviction that russia must not be allowed to use energy as a weapon to coerce or threaten its neighbors. and today, we're launching a climate and energy partnership. to support energy security and the development of sustainable energy, sustainable energy technologies and emerging and emerging economists, including in central europe and ukraine. tonight, our efforts to our band and on our global climate ambitions that we have to up the any. what happened is we talked about when paris accord reset. we thought we had a stablish just how serious it was. but things have gotten much more dire since even that date. and tonight, our average the update to up the ante on global climate global climate ambitious. i
11:22 pm
also thank chance to merkel for the dedication and the sacrifice of german troops serves side by side along with us forces. and that can stand for almost 20 years. and we reaffirmed our shared commitment to continuing to counter terrorist threats where we find them, including in his ha, ha, in africa and we, when we think about the future, the future we want for the world. there's no issue. there's no issue set at all that i believe we find any other than the commitment that between the united states and germany doesn't benefit whatever the problem. the concern is we need to fight covered 19 pandemic everywhere to strengthen global health security for tomorrow. so we're ready for the next pandemic. we need to make sure that the roles of the road governing the use of
11:23 pm
emerging technologies, advance freedom, not authoritarianism, and repression. we need to promote sustainable and inclusive economic recovery that enhances the prosperity and opportunities for all. and so much more this just, this isn't just work with governors, the workers work of our people's sherry and their innovation and insights, joining together to amplify our collective impact. so today we're launching a futures form between our 2 countries, which will bring together top experts across business academic in civil society and more to collaborate as we shape our share in future. madam chancellor, i know that the partnership between germany, united states will continue to grow stronger on the foundation that you have helped to build on a personal note. i must tell you,
11:24 pm
i'll miss seeing you in our summits. i would truly will. so thank you again for making the journey for our productive meeting today. and for your sake that mr. president did joe 1st, 1st of all, i would like to thank fruit of fun to talk in storage fantasy and as if the system on both the thought i'd appreciate what you said about that. perhaps you will allow me to say something about that because the extremes flooding and north, i'm with failure latin a day that has come to an end not a day where people have been desperately for their loved ones and they belong names . 100 to 1000 would have seen their homeless turn faster place in their homes were traveling their loved ones. when the choice is high,
11:25 pm
impact of this tragedy is something that will take a few days to emerge. my don't go to all of those ones until fearing for the life close to them and i include emergency services are doing all they can in extremely difficult condition. and i must say that the suffering of those impacted on by this to me. but across the day, i have been kept up to date. i spoke to state and premieres and the finance minister in india. others as well. and let me say to all of that, i will not leave you alone. we will not leave you alone in your hour of need and will help with rebuilding when i find to get to the person who does joe biden.
11:26 pm
thank you very much for inviting me to come here to washington city and 10 talks that we've had, but it's the 1st time i've been here since 2019. and i have to say the personal exchange has been a wonderful thing once again. today we've seen that we're not just allies in partners, but we are a nation that are mostly the ones that have close ties and i'm grateful for the course. today. we are united by common values, supervision by a will overcome the challenges facing in today's day and age and it's my firm conviction. and it's not enough to just be connected to common values, but that we live in the time when new challenges talk to keep this requiring this topical policy making, which is why i'm so grateful and the foundation in washington that we have. and
11:27 pm
also in the agreements that we have in the washington declaration will be a foundation for us moving forward. i'm grateful that we have a german american forum engaging with issues like use we will be discussing these issues and looking for common solutions. and i think the structures like this across showing minds on the amount of common ground we have emerged over the course of my talk. we talked about the panoramic and how we can contain it and overcome it. and we greed that is not enough just to vaccinate our own populations. of course we want to have as many people in our countries be vaccinated, that we have support other countries as well with vaccinations. we're working together with kofax and i'm grateful that the us and your leadership. joe, have committed clearly to multilateralism in the area of climate, but also in terms of the world health organization and the world trade organization
11:28 pm
as well. with germany and the u. s. have therefore agreed to provide vaccinations and go to emerging economies. we will be working together kovak, female. we talked about the challenges of climate change that are facing us, and i'm very grateful that the u. s. has now returned to the paris accord and that we now have a very different foundation when it comes to climate protection and making progress here. i think the see if i need to stop extreme weather events that we have seen, whether it's drought floods for the fire and regulate precipitation. all of these things show us the number of extreme weather incident has increased dramatically in recent years and we must have gone with the fact that many of us now have energy and climate partnerships that we have decided here together is
11:29 pm
important sign showing that we need to push forward green hydrogen, hydrogen, renewable energy, and many other aspects of this as well. and of course, we are competing with others in this world. we want to a certain cells in this competition and germany look forward to cooperation and i very much also support the president for your infrastructure project. when it was the banding infrastructure world wide. this was agreed of the summit as well, and germany will be president of next year and we will be pursuing this project. and we spoke about russia and ukraine by and about noise stream to that context to we see the issues differently in terms of what this project entails. so let me say very clearly that our understanding remains that ukraine is. it will remain a transit country for natural gas that ukraine has
11:30 pm
a right of any country to territorial serenity, which is why we are still involved in the midst process will become active if the plan, russia, i knew isn't, does not allow you to be a transit country so no, it's jim to is an additional project. it is not a project. instead of having ukraine transit country for gas because anything else would trigger the huge tension. and we are still in conversations still in discussion about how we can move forward. i know we discussed other priority areas of foreign policy relation to china is an issue. we are country that advocate us on the free side. i mean this means that whenever we see human rights not being adhered to mom, we want to speak very clearly. we are committed to the territorial integrity of
11:31 pm
countries. and we also talked about the many facets of the cooperation and competition with china as well in the economic fields, but also military, the environment, issues of security. and naturally, there are a great deal of challenges when it comes to agreement with iran. we believe everything should be done to reach a good agreement here. but the ball court, we talked about them as well. for many years, i chewed together on the fun of us all containing terrorist dangers. though we have not managed to create a nation as we had hoped him. but despite this partner, i believe it was a bit partnership with in, in and you funding among our soldiers, the german soldiers pretty. i appreciate you see it on the so we talked about it
11:32 pm
as well and the challenges that we see there and we are grateful to the u. s. for their efforts around anti terrorism in the region. and then, and finally traps with i'm mentioning that we have a german american economic congress, be a law dialogue that we agreed on a little tough road where i can make mind exchange ideas. we have, after all, a great deal of trade with one another. we want to expand this and economic relations remain important. it was a discussion based on friendship. we have close partners. and i want to say that i hope discontinued jermel, chancellor and beyond. and i think we've created a good basis to have a format for further dialogue. in the future because the world remains a place full of challenge. thank you very much. thank you very much. where it's
11:33 pm
going to take 2 questions and i'm going to begin by recognizes the portnoy and we congratulate you on your new role as president of the white house correspondents association. thank my sympathies with thank you. i appreciate that sir. on behalf of the press corps, thank you and we're looking for today. we can have even more reporters all the way to the back of the room. so thank you very much. i have a couple of questions for you. also a question for the chancellor. mister president with respect to latin america and the developments there in the last week, plus one of the circumstances under which you would send american troops to haiti. that's the 1st question. the 2nd question is, when it comes to cuba, what is your current thinking on american sanctions, toward cuba and the embargo? and today your press secretary said that communism is a failed ideology. i assume that your view, i was wondering if you could also give us your view on socialists and then for the
11:34 pm
chancellor. the question is, madam, the president said that you know the oval office as well as he does. i'm wondering if you could reflect on your exchanges with american presidents over the last 16 years and particularly contrast the current present with his most immediate predecessor in 2 minutes or less. obviously, you know, where they elect to president when they start off by history. the question relative to haiti and cuba and communism is a fail system, universally fail system. and i don't see socialism as a very useful substitute, but that's another story. with regard to whether the circumstance which we would send military troops to haiti,
11:35 pm
we were only sending american marines to our embassy to make sure that they are secure and nothing is out of whack at all. but the idea of sending american forces into haiti is not on the agenda at this moment. number one, number 2, with regard to cuba, cuba is a, unfortunately, a fail state and repressing their citizens. there are a number of things that we would consider doing to help the people of cuba. but it would require a different circumstance or a guarantee that they would not be taken advantage of by the government. for example, the ability to send remittances to back to cuba would not do that now, because the fact is, is highly likely that the regime would confiscate those remittances or big chunks
11:36 pm
of it. with regard to they need cove it on, i'm assuming they have a code problem on in cuba, i'd be prepared to give significant amounts of vaccine. if in fact, i was assured, an international organization would administer those vaccines and do it in a way that average citizens would have access to those vaccines. and one of the things that you did not ask but were considering is cut off access to internet. we're considering whether we have the technological ability to reinstate that access and i think i've answered your questions. thank you. yeah, i point as long as it is very much interested. i'm really kind of getting on well and cooperating with any
11:37 pm
american president in our interest when suddenly we always had conferences and i'm sure you could also if you'd be in there and how we did things. and thirdly, let me just say that we had a very friendly conversation today. oh, thank you, not office phone. so it's not that i have to ask, i feel it's considered in the president. i have a question about new stream to buy them. you just said that you would be actively involved in russia, breaks which promises and no longer allowed on natural gas to transfer through ukraine. what do you mean by that specifically? does that mean that germany was off no extreme to and what would be the legal foundation for the president united has fought again for so many years. and now the company running it says it's just a few days or weeks until the pipeline ready. will the united states allow
11:38 pm
this pipeline to go into commission or not? or do the companies have to expect sanctions from the us to get to that? you'll be aware of the fact that we haven't put a great deal that we're not just germany, but the entire european commission into ensuring that negotiate the contract with russia and ukraine that ensures when it's 2024. and my assumption is that apply will continue to be possible after this data, at least the scheme i have never heard anything for the to the contrary. mildly, if you saw one and then we have entire set of tools not just on the german side, but also on the side that we can use as we've seen the sanctions and minutes and the session. the crimea, things that i might mention in this regard,
11:39 pm
and i would also like to say that we've looked at in the response that we have, we have a discussion with our european friends. but when the time comes and i hope it never does come, we will look into this in more detail. alright, this is the w news. this is our continuing coverage of uncle american visit to washington d. c. her final visit as the german chancellor here at the big table with me is our chief, political correspondent, belinda crane. melinda, now we know why the press conference was late. they were in talks, they were, they covered a lot of ground. talk to me, what do you think is the most important thing to come out of a meeting? i do think what we've just been hearing the issue of ukraine and north stream. and clearly they did not agree to terminate the north stream gas pipeline. this is a pipeline that would bring natural gas from russia directly to germany,
11:40 pm
essentially bypassing ukraine, which has been a transit country for natural gas as we've just heard them saying, the reason that's important is that that gives ukraine leverage v vi. russia. if that goes away, ukraine loses a crucial piece of its leverage versus this very uncomfortable, big neighbor that has occupied the eastern part of its country and taken over crimea. so this is a very serious issue. now. biden is clearly doesn't like the north stream project. there had been expectations that he would anti more sanctions against the german companies involve trump had imposed sanctions that he would continue, that instead he stood back and let's not forget we have 2 months until the german election. many of us believe that the u. s. will do nothing on north stream until after the election until it sees where things are going. but what we did here is that they do have a game plan of sorts on how to deal with threats from russia,
11:41 pm
against ukraine, whether it's removing its status as a gas transit country. as we heard there is an existing contract, will it be length and we don't know that the chancellor says she thinks it will. there's good reason to believe putting might not do that, but clearly they are now talking about how to shore up ukraine. and even after, in north stream, pipeline goes into effect and that will be an ongoing tough conversation. because the chancellor, for example, mentioned sanctions, is the possible recourse that one could have against russia. well, we've seen multiple sanctions put on to put in his oligarch friends numerous players in russia, and it's sure hasn't been putting will until now. so the announced this new alliance defined climate change, but by using new technology that would incorporate eastern europe and ukraine. and i find interesting because maybe this is about germany showing out some money,
11:42 pm
the european union showing up some money to look at switching, ukraine's very extensive pipeline network that it has over to can essentially transporting green hydrogen, for example, to transporting carbon neutral fuels. that would take some investments retooling and may be part of this package that they're now looking into would involve some commitments from the you to do that, which would again be for a potentially a win win for everybody since germany. the reason it once it's natural gas is scratchy gas, is a cleaner fuel than coal. and if they want to get off call, they need cleaner fuel. it would pull ukraine even closer to europe. yeah. before we run out of time, china. right, again, they clearly agreed to continue having different viewpoints on china, but the chancellor definitely paid respect to considerations of human rights. and
11:43 pm
we have seen some shift among german politicians on that. but this is going to be an ongoing conversation. all right, and she political correspondence. belinda, great, excellent analysis has been a long night, melinda. thank you very much. watching the w news. i'll be back at the top of the hour with our continuing coverage of the german chancellor uncle, a miracle on a farewell. does it to washington the can you hear me? no. yes, we can hear you in germans house that we bring you angela mackerel and you've never had the right just so what is what it was? who is medical really well packed and want to talk to people who follows along the way, myers and critic to join us for mattel. last, the interest global

was 10 when i 1st watched the olympics on tv with estimating. and i've been fascinated, ever since. the limping torch related toko is already underway with the games that opened on july 23rd despite right. and copays. even though i look, be limping in the movement and what makes it really so special for me? all 3 german athletes offense, javelin throw, and a high jump at their rocky road to tokyo. and i definitely want to be that although it is a bit scary, maybe it hasn't been a can you check out is there is a risk and concern and almost limbering up at a training camp in turkey for him. it's been an extraordinary year. after the postponement of the olympics, he took a break to concentrate fully on physical preparation,
11:46 pm
as opposed to competition over the winter. that meant training indoors. but now he's finally back outside the bed, suddenly picking up the javelin again, feels just amazing like a child having that bicycle taken away and then being allowed to get on it again. it's something you never forget to do. and it's exciting tuning. you pick up the javelin, and it's immediately gratifying to have that feeling back into what does that mean? the technique is crucial. it's a really special feeling. if you haven't done it in 6 months, you're so hungry that you can't wait to launch a long and powerful fro again with the advice from the power of powerful in this case means 90 meters plus something he's managed time. and again, in recent years, his goal now is to repeat that feet this year. oh,

i don't know, has a ready competed in a major meet this year. she entered the qualification tournament and catherine russia, determined to secure her ticket to the olympics as were 204 rival fellow fences, dolo attacks and fainted, but failed to make the grave. her dreams of making her 1st olympics, could now be dest. ah, the speed of the lympics or my big goal now, especially with the usual sporting festival with so many disciplines in the same place at the highest level. and it's the biggest event out there for a month or so. and i want to be part of it, but sometimes there's one final chance for alexander and dolo via tournament in madrid in april. that's what she's focusing on now. but only the winner will
11:48 pm
qualify for tokyo will full years of high intensity training for the big goal proved to have been in vain. the me, it's been a complicated past 12 months for high jump money loss, young flies. the pandemic turned her plans upside down. the olympics postponed, training under difficult conditions and no tournaments, the resulting lack of security about the future. also compromise her motivation. and cobit 19 is still impacting on her daily life. her boyfriend's nikolai has been a pillar of support, helping him make it through these challenging times to get him to do something with friends again or visit relatives without a guilty conscience. and i also went to work with my coach again without any issues

age is fine, and even then years later, it's not ideal. ideally, she just wants to be proving her talents on the big stage. and it could happen in may. if the pandemic gets in the way again, it's tough to assess her current level of performance. no idea when you're jumping again, competitive at a similar level, then you automatically jump that higher because of the pressure on top of the 2016 games in rio de janeiro. she finished 7th after clearing one meter 93 violent young flushes case. it's all about focusing on her body. thomas also has a silent partner to consider. the more popular top rated, pretty accurate, and i don't have any extremely emotional bonds to my javelin. that's because they
11:51 pm
get broken too frequently for me to connect with them. like you do with gibbs and there's a whole range of them. and they, they're not just in terms of color. there are different materials to, it's called the cyber metal, minium steel, alum minion, with carbon fiber. on the surface. they're all the same rules. why 2? because at the same level, same way did anything thickness look like that's really important. like the only difference is in this particular javelin, according to the wind. but she got feeling ran personal techniques. and the vibration is also important with an javelin. that silent after all, there's a particular noise when you throw them. if this is going to give it a go up. and that involves absorbing one ton and wait javelin flowing might look straightforward, but it puts the body under enormous strain. and that to means specific training

smooth uses a subtle and perhaps unexpected method. for years he'd been practicing his stance and stability on a slight line he, i suspect that it was pretty strict, but it's basically about having an amazing surface. it helps to train even the smallest muscles and what's going on to the key words here, injury prevention for us, it's not about growing as far as possible, regardless by what about insuring a healthy career in sports and something. we also try to change it up and coming talent. practice won't enable me to immediately fro server by which it will help to maintain a high level of performance over an extended period of time. and i'm invited for the book. never harrison. you billing of a type who are licensed by up to me and he'll need that high level come august 7th. when his biggest event of the year takes place at the tokyo and
11:53 pm
then picks the fall from the feeling nervous. he's looking forward to tackling the new outdoor season with less stress and more confidence. i get i mainly just entering the phase where things are getting gradually more intense that see if the weather is getting warmer in germany, we're doing more targeted training and gradually doing more javelin frozen. and then now be the focus on competing. more specifically on the olympics and madrid at the end of april for alexander, i'm dolo the tournament in the spanish capital is her last chance to get to tokyo. there's no room for error, only the window will stamp that ticket to the olympics. the rest will have to watch from home. alexander and dolo has high hopes and she
11:54 pm
gets off to a very promising stuff, comfortably beating an opponent from lithuania and then from hungary. but the semi final presents her with a rival of a different caliber pasha. neva from bella. ruth, the 2 had never faced each other before. and dolo maintains her focus throughout about the ends up as the 15.29 when she's now in the final standing in the way of her path to tokyo is all it could be got from ukraine a to time bronze medal when it had the world championships to see the favorites and promptly takes the lead. alexandra and solo try to recover
