ah, i'm terry martin. thanks for joining us. germany is bracing for a rapid spread of the court on the chronic corona virus bury it with the variant already in the country. the government is responding by stepping up its vaccination program and introducing new restrictions. tight limits on social contacts will come into effect after christmas. army crone is on the advance in germany, and the politicians say it's time to react. after their meeting, chancellor sholtes and the state premieres said private gatherings would be limited to just 10 people if they're vaccinated or of recovered from cove, it fully unvaccinated, socializing will be even harder. they will only be able to meet to other people. the moves are prompted by fears the virus could spread over the holidays, can hidden or get fished in denice, i can understand every one. and each of you who doesn't want to hear any more about

corona, about mutations and the virus variance that we cannot and must not close her eyes to this next way that's beginning to loom over us. corona is not taking a christmas break. despite that, most of those buying last minute gifts will be able to hand them over in person on christmas day. the new restrictions will only be compulsory from the 28th of december. new year is said to be unusually quiet with sports events played in empty stadiums and dance menus closed as, as to so this is not the time for parties and social evenings in large groups of goals of under the government is putting hopes on continuing the high rate of vaccination through the christmas period, they hoped to deliver millions more jap by the end of the year and $30000000.00 in january. in berlin. many people seem unfazed by the prospect of tougher measures. shut it in, i hadn't planned anything big anyway, just a small family gathering that is best they ran as

a tin lighter aunt. we're 10 people and of course we would like to celebrate christmas together. the adults are all boosted that and i get a p, c, r test every other day. so we feel we are on the safe side who in the unsolved as the happens, i to deter finances. 6 of us will get together with friends. unfortunately, without family there in stuttgart munich, we don't want to get on the train of driving to stressful, so we'll visit them next year stresses. as mahogany senior, the chancellor says though infections are currently falling, it's only a matter of time before armor crohn is the dominant cove it very into germany. corona has not stolen christmas, but the strain it is putting on the public and the politicians is not over yet. of more or less talk to our chief political correspondent, linda crane, under the new measures don't take effect until after christmas. wouldn't they do more good of introduce right away?
9:05 am
in fact, not compulsory until after christmas, but some federal states will be instituting them sooner. for example, mecklenburg for common in the north east of the country has decided that as of christmas eve, they will be putting measures into effect because intensive care bed capacity. there is severely strain. so there is some leeway nonetheless, no question. the authorities could have gone further, but the government faces something of a dilemma, terry, because the fact is that infection rates have been falling recently. and until these latest warnings, many people here in germany felt that things were looking up especially compared to late november when cases were much, much higher. but the fact is that at the moment we are in a low between 2 waves, the 4th wave that was caused by the delta variant is receiving. and that 5th wave
9:06 am
hasn't hit yet. and that makes it very difficult for the government to essentially get way out in front with the measures that it imposes. and in fact, that was recognized by the chancellor. he said yesterday, he's aware that people are tired, people feel brittle, and therefore i think there's a sense on the part of the government, particularly since the health minister had said there will be no hard lock down before christmas that they need to take this step by step, but they did face some pushback from the federal states. well, state and federal leaders in germany have disagreed all the best way to fight the pandemic in the past. is there more consensus this time, melinda? outwardly, there was consensus, but as i said, a couple of federal states did feel that measures don't go far enough. they made that clear in a press conference following the need any so. so the blanket of consensus was a bit thin. perhaps these particular states,
9:07 am
they include bottom written bags in the south west saxony in the east. they're concerned that the new government hasn't established the necessary legal framework for ensuring that in an emergency uniform measures can be adopted quickly across all of germany. as you know, such a law was in place under the last government. this government decided to repeal it in hopes that they're going to stop. the legislature would then have more of a say in the measures that are established. but as i say, several states feel that we don't at the moment have the necessary legal basis. and there was also quite a heated discussion about a last minute warning yesterday from the country center of disease control, which did in fact advocate a harder lockdown. and as i mentioned earlier, melinda parts of germany, the intensive care units, are already full. how concerned or authorities about the capacity of the country's health care system to deal with what's coming?
9:08 am
they are very, very concerned. some experts have said that me con, could be the dominant variant here in germany as early as the end of january. and that we could then see new cases at 200000 a day that will put an absolute strain on intensive care capacity across this country. as you know, in late november, early december, some hospitals were already having to do tree. i've sent patients elsewhere for intensive care treatment. that's one concern. the other concerned is essential services, like electricity, water, garbage disposal and so on. because we may see many, many essential workers falling. yeah. right. melinda, thank you so much. are put she political correspondent, belinda crane. and let's catch you up on some of the other developments in the pandemic around the world. in portugal bars and restaurants will now closed from the 26th of december 5 days earlier than scheduled infections in portugal have

a short distance from the white house. these people are coming up to be tested for cope at 19 as case numbers reached record highs. i'll call the fall, we are so i need to take a test in everybody that is a few of us getting together. so we want to all take a cobra test to be safe to be just because i've got grandkids at home and my mother and everybody else me. so i have to keep, you know, just by don't back and take a chance to sit in at home to my family. i'm not trying to do it, but it's not just testing that'll help in the battle against mac crohn. at the white house, president biden made yet another appeal to americans to get vaccinated. it's your booster shots, were a mask our doctors and made it clear booster shots provide the strongest protection . unfortunately,
9:11 am
we still have transamerica people who are eligible for the booster shots covered not yet gotten. i've gotten the 1st 2 shots. not gotten the booster folks. the booster shots are free and widely available in new york city. those booster shot even come with a cash payment. the city's mayor has offered a $100.00 to every person who gets booster by the end of the year. a desperate measure as the us enters another holiday season, riddled with uncertainty about what course upon demick will take. catch up on some of the stories making headlines around the world. sedans, prime minister, abdullah hum duke intends to resign within hours, according to reuters news agency. i'm doc was installed after a coup in november that ended the transitional partnership between the military and pro democracy parties. mass protests of ross event in the aftermath of the crew.

many governments halted shipments of humanitarian aid. belle, the country's economy is in totters, and the taliban are unable to feed their own people. with more than $20000000.00 afghans ex, estimated to be at risk of malnutrition, the aid organization. unicef has stepped in to fill the gap, though, getting deliveries to those in need is a major challenge. the only road leading into this remote area along the border to pakistan has been partially destroyed by mines. we're driving to an area where the afghani army and the taliban font. for decades. the people who live in this village were caught between the 2 sides. now they suffer from extreme poverty. women and children have been especially hard hit by the situation midwives sent by unicef are trying to help the desperate mothers who am i need medicine. but the streets
9:14 am
are blocked her and there has been a drought for years. there has been no rain. our children are suffering or whatever . i hope they give us something. i need food for my 2 grandchildren. they are sick and don't have enough to eat. i think the taliban used to shoot at the aid workers, but now the women are allowed to enter the village. how humans are these to hawaii has to bring more medicine here because every day more patients come to you get us like it is more. we're having problems getting supplies, but i thought of that teach at the baltimore had come, which be that go with the fact that women speak openly with us. anger's, the taliban. i said, wow, that's love of him on our women must cover their faces. let's do that. but they did that duty was, they push us back up and we have to stop filming only after we are joined by the unicef communications team and their accompanying taliban. does the situation calm down they drive with us to the next village?
9:15 am
and if, if this woman is pregnant, the mobile unicef health team examines her the next hospital is 2 hours away. her children are malnourished. a woman wants to show us how she lives and invites us into her house. her family has many children and little space. no heating and nearly nothing to eat. but this is what i will cook today. i will give it to the little ones so they can have something warm to eat. it's a small bowl of corn meal. that's all we have. oh, i can work. more and more people crowd around the unicef aid workers. they don't have enough of anything including food. the needs are so immense and because we're not only providing basic humanitarian assistance, we are also having to support
9:16 am
a system from collapse. the taliban riding with the unicef workers are heavily armed. they repeatedly make it clear that in afghanistan, the un organization can only help people in need if they allow it. of more of this . let's bring in afghans realist, ela tv, who joins this problem is bull valley. the humanitarian situation in afghanistan is dire. with 2 thirds of the people now facing malnutrition, how did things get this bad? they got the bad because they didn't start out very good. if you look at all of the reports and all of the studies over the last 20 years of us occupation, you saw that, you know, a lot of services were locked in, you know, they, they were highly relied on foreign aid. and they didn't really extend far beyond the district senators or really well populated areas. you know, in your video package. they mentioned that the hospital from the village would be
9:17 am
something like 2 hours away. and usually that means not only 2 hours away, but 2 hours on the highly unpaid road. that's very difficult to get to. so you had a situation where there just wasn't enough services being provided to people, even when there was billions and funding coming in. and now when you take away those billions are most of them 1000000000, you're left with even more of a shower of what was there. and it's becoming much more difficult for people to provide for themselves and provide to their community. because so much, you know, hospitals and schools and all of these things were so reliant on foreign aid all along. are the taliban early helping or hindering agencies in the country? now it really depends where you are. you know, you can find people usually like volunteer groups who have been able to work with
9:18 am
the color bar in, cobble and holes in my zone while back in canada and other provinces and can get them, you know, to sort of protect you or at least not interfere in your actions and then you have other instances where people feel intimidated or shoot away or unsupported by this call, a bon and you know, this issue of how to get taller bond not only to buy in program, but also to help in terms of security is something that the u. n is currently dealing with because they do have field offices and they do have, you know, different operations that are ongoing. they're not to the level they used to be, but they also need the taller bond to provide them security. they may need assistance from getting places and then the 3, the issues of, well, you know, a lot of their leadership is on sanctions live on black lists and things like that . so that's how you know, how,
9:19 am
how do you deal with them in order to get the 8 out there, but not necessarily legitimize them or go against your own. the lists that you made that you know, some sanctions are there any prospects for improvement here? only do you see any, what can be done to help the afghan people? i mean, the biggest thing that can be done is to release the funds. you know, there's still aid that's coming. it's trickling in. you know, it's 144000000 years, 300000000. there may be a couple 1000000000 here and there. but unfortunately, the way a lot of fun has been set up over the last 20 years, is that it's highly, highly reliant on foreign aid. so unless there's the real property, trusts are getting consistent amounts of money into the country and figuring out, you know, all of the countries issues with the, all of, on how to, if you don't recognize them, i leave how to find a way to work with them. in a way that you feel doesn't put you in some kind of political jeopardy way. you,
9:20 am
me feel like you appear to be legitimizing them, but the some sort of a system needs to be established. because right now everything is so ad hawk from the hollow bod side, and from the international community site, it's always a little trickled. but what i want to saw needs is a constant source and a constant flow of aid and assistance until it can really finally stand on its own 2 feet after 20 years already. thank you so much journalist ali la tv there. thank you. so what'll it be the red pill or the blue pill that was the choice facing can reads more than 20 years ago. and the groundbreaking science fiction epic metrics the film and it's 2 sequels depicted dystopian future in which humans are trapped by machines inside a simulated reality. now matrix for has just hit cinema screens and,

and premier delayed several times by the pandemic. but does it measure up to the original? here's a review i thomas boss who would 2 decades in the matrix revolutions. tell me what happened, thomas, and if and a neo is living an ordinary life in san francisco when event take your turn for the weird my grace. we don't use that word in here. and he finds himself mixed up again in a war between humanity and robots. the matrix resurrection sees keanu reeves and carrie, anne moss, reprise their roles is deemed rebel lovers neo. and trinity i, i think it's everything that you can hope for in a matrix film. and, and then song, i think hopefully you can be inspiring, you know, help us always singular matrix films as
9:22 am
a tool. you kind of that help us see the world direct to launch. we chowsky is back at the helm of, for the full founding of the science fiction action thriller. filming began in february 2020. but it was interrupted by the pandemic that set the release date back 7 months. but the wait was worth it. anticipation has reached fever pitch and the matrix resurrection is expected to be one of the most successful cinema leases of the year. after all these years to be going back to where it all started back to the matrix. ah, well let's go to our very own master of the movie. scott roxborough, who joined us from cologne. scott, you've seen the film, so what should we do?
9:23 am
should audiences take the red pill and jump back into the matrix? yeah, i think that depends a bit on how big a fan you are of the original movies because this new film is real nostalgic callback to those films made now 20 years ago. and it really stays true to the franchises, sort of paranoid sy fi roots. so again, we have a story of this character neo, a man who's questioning if he's living in the real world or in a computer simulation. and the film is also adds in this new film, adds a sort of met at a level to that on where he question it talks about the a phenomenon of the matrix films themselves and the fans response to them. so a lot of stuff going on and the movie itself is also a full bore action film like its predecessors. um, but here's where i see a bit of the problems because the action in the original matrix films is really
9:24 am
groundbreaking. i mean, think of vo phenomenon. like bullet time, which the movies created. here though it's sort of feels like old hat. it's almost as if of the rector lino a house. he is just sort of reprising her. her, her greatest hits almost that she's her own cover band here for fans. i think it's a great, great to see your can reeves and carry an los return as neo and trinity. but personally, i felt this message, this resurrections was less of a 2nd coming and a bit of a reanimation of a, a bit of a sickly corpse. oh no, this is the 4th matrix film. why the director, lena chowsky feel a need to return to the matrix. yes she, she said she didn't want to originally, but that the personal tragedy pushed her to um, she lost her parents a couple of years ago and she said she felt um, if she couldn't bring them back, that she would try to resurrect her 2 most famous fictional creations, neo and trinity on the production itself had a lot of problems. it had to shut down because of coded. there are
9:25 am
a lot of changes, a hugo weaving who played the original bill and agent smith in the 1st films i had a scheduling conflict. so he couldn't be in these new films. he was replaced by jonathan crawford. place a new version of the character here. there's another change as well. yeah, he, a of dual martine, the 2nd place, a new version of morphia, the character played by a lauren fisherman. i'm in the rituals, in some ways you can see this movie as what elsie's attempt to sort of rewrite her own fictional past. the only problem i see with that is because the matrix films were so influential and he terms like red pilling of entered the vernacular. i'm the, it's really difficult to make this new film seem original. this film is hitting the cinema's just as the all micron variant. of the grand a virus is raging through the world of cello rapes, he might be able to fight off an army of robots, but sch, can he fight on the crown at the box office? i will see, i mean spider man, the newspaper man,
9:26 am
feel just open ended incredible box office. so it's obvious that of audiences will come out frequently. really want to see. but as he said, ami con is spreading like crazy. a number of countries, the netherlands, denmark, of all re shut down other theaters. it could be that this new matrix summarized just as theater start to shut down again. i'm but a real fan, shouldn't worry because warner brothers is releasing this movie simultaneously on its streaming platform, hbo max. so if you want to, you can take the red pill from the safety and comfort of your couch at home. okay, scott, thank you very much. that was scott roxborough there stairs just a couple of days before christmas and someone special is on the move. yes, i mean santa claus. he is preparing for a long journey to bring presents and joy to children around the world, with his sleigh pulled by his fastest reindeer and one in reserve to take over. when rudolf gets tired, he is leaving the snow covered wilderness of lapland. look out for him during this
