the integrity of the vote. and the heroes are defendant. this capital you can't love your country only when you, when you can't obey the law, only when it's convenient. you can't be patriotic when you embrace enable, lies. those historic this capital and those who instigated and incite it. and those who called on them to do so, held a dagger at the throat of america and american democracy. they had come here out of patriotism or principle. they came here in rage. not in service of america, but rather in service of one man. those who incited the mob, the real plotters were desperate to deny the certification of this election. the fire, the will, the voters, with their plot was foiled. congress and democratic republicans stayed. senators,

representative staff. they finished their work, the constitution demanded. they honored their oath to defend the constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic work folks. now it's up to all of us. to we the people, to stand for the rule of law. to preserve the flame of democracy. to keep the promise of america alive, the promise is at risk targeted by the forces that value brewed strength over the sanctity of democracy. fear over hope. personal gain, our public good. make no mistake about it. we're living at an inflection point in history. both at home and abroad were engaged and new in

an attack on democracy. he constantly reference to the man he called, the former president never used a donald trump's name and fully and squarely laid the blame for those events of a year ago. at donald trump's feet, but his constant thing was that american democracy had prevailed. let's see and look at some of those takeaways a with d w reporter william blue cross here with me in the studio. welcome of william. what jumped out for you? well, he broke down what a lot of people call the big lie into 3 smaller lives, right. he talked about your trumps insistence or the former president, the defeated former president has biden said that he one that was one of the, the lies that the results for rigged, which is another one of the lies and that the people who are in the capital were the quote true patriots of the united states. and so he kind of went through those 3 points to try to lay out the facts that all of that is of

course, nonsense. what his goal might have been if at this point, after everything the night it has been through with poll, showing that many americans. and depending on the question being asked, where the poll being given majority is republican. still believing these lies how effective biting can really be to convince anybody else is i think a very open question if that's even possible. none the less biden had a very, very difficult line to walk here. he didn't want to be too pessimistic. why also not sugar coating? what happened a year ago, which was, as we've heard the most serious attack on american democracy since the civil war. and it reminded me actually a lot of the birth or conspiracy movement under brock obama went. donald trump tried to convince people that brock obama wasn't actually american, was not actually a legitimate president. and obama then had

a lot of problems how to deal with that. and he ended up directly confronting that and was criticized for legitimizing this falsehood by directing it. but by not directly directly approaching it, it less that lie faster is a really difficult thing that i think people, politicians, people, the media researchers, academics are struggling with how to actually break down these falsehoods and commends any body of something approaching reality. i think those are biden was trying to, to get to in some way today as a cohen's from the w's washington bureau chief, a innocent poll, who was also watching that. so a president biden, not seeking to change mines with this speech, not seeking to persuade the other side, but standing up for what he believes is right. this is not a, a fight that he chose, but a fight that he's going to take on on the less. well, phil, i think we've really,
