12:00 pm
sarah kelly and i work with ah, ah ah ah, this is dw news live from berlin. tensions between russia and the west enter a pivotal face. you are secretary of state and j blink and sit down with his
12:01 pm
russian counterparts. survey love roth. they are holding last ditch talks over ukraine as fears grow of war in europe. also coming up, it's a 1st for europe, austria parliament votes to make cobit 19 vaccines mandatory for all adults. people who refused to get vaccinated could soon face half the fine. o. u. s. singer meatloaf, best known for his seventy's head, bad out of how has died at 74, will look back at a legendary career in entertainment. ah, ah, i'm see me. so misconduct is good to have you with us. america's top diplomat, antony blank and russian. foreign minister survey live for of our holding high
12:02 pm
stakes talks in geneva at this hour. the meeting follows a 10 stand off over ukraine that some fear could lead to war in europe. the 2 countries have agreed to keep pursuing a diplomatic path to work on their differences, but both men have play down hope of finding a resolution today. and let's bring in our correspondence on the story, we have our brussels bureau chief, alexander phenomena in geneva, following the talks and emily sure. when, as the russian perspective for us from moscow, it is good to see you both alexander, i want to start with you there in geneva talks, as we said, are ongoing. both men of played down any hope of finding resolution, but what can we expect today? all eyes are on geneva today to me, and we have to say that that could be a last ditch attempt to diffuse tensions and to find a diplomatic solution to their crisis. as you just said,
12:03 pm
secretary blinking play down any prospects for a quick fix saying that he is not expecting any breakthrough here. and the russian foreign minister said your love rough didn't sound optimistic either. however, you asked has made it clear that they are ready and determined to continue talking and that there are areas where both sides could come to an agreement. for example, when we talk about arms control or military exercises. but you, as has already made clear that some of rushes demands like the demands to top of the lodgement of nato, or to declare that ukraine can never ever become a nato member or non stop jurors. let's get the perspective over in moscow now, emily, as we heard there, these are being seen as last ditch talks to de escalate the situation. there's been a lot of diplomatic activity, but has the russian position, for example,
12:04 pm
on that demand that alexandra mentioned on natal, lodgement has that position actually changed? well, despite the several rounds of talks that we've seen in the last 2 weeks, those, those main demands from the russian side haven't changed, including what you just mentioned, that demand on nato expansion and the demand that ukraine never joined nato. despite the fact that the west has repeated in different forms and in different rounds of talks that that's a non starter. we've heard that again and again from the russian side as their main demand for a security guarantee. but there have been several proposals that have been made to russia during the course of these talks in the last weeks that also, i think, could be interesting stuff that they've sort of picked up on the way in the sense. on the one hand, we heard this week from the german foreign minister minister on the book,
12:05 pm
who said that she wants to resume ukraine piece talks in the normandy format. so that's with ukraine. russia, france, and germany and the russian side seem to open to that. they also seem to open to the idea of the us, perhaps joining some peace talks. and there was also the nato proposal on sort of more transparency when it comes to military exercises and perhaps arms control. so it does seem like the russian side isn't backing down on its main core demands that nato eastern expansion. but it does seem like they're trying to kind of have their cake and eat it too, and perhaps pick up some, some useful things on the way. i was under coming back to you. we know that the u. s. secretary of state was visiting allies this week to close ranks if you will. but does the west actually now have a united front on how they would respond to a russian incursion? well, i think what we have seen in the last weeks is that the u. s. and its allies have
12:06 pm
made it clear that they are determined to impose political and economic sanctions on russia. if the kremlin uses force against ukraine. and we have seen quite a united front against russia. however, of course, when it comes to the nitty gritty, there are justified doubt that all allies are on the same page, depending on what it's really going to happen on ukraine's order. because we really have to understand that there is a lot at stake for european allies in particular. and some of them, like france or germany, for example, have been reluctant in the past to him, to inflict much pain on russia because of the economic relations with russia. for example, euro gets 40 percent of its gas from russia. so economic and political
12:07 pm
sanctions that would be imposed on russia would also mean that europe is going to pay a higher price than the u. s. which is why there is a lot of emphasis on the fact that there is hope that all of this dialogue can lead to some sort of resolution. that's something we heard. and in a blink and say a little bit earlier today, let's listen to a clip. we have of him. the bottom line is this. this is a critical moment. you're right. we don't expect to resolve our differences here today, but i do hope and expect that we can test whether the path diplomacy dialogue remains open. we're committed to walking that path into resolving our differences peacefully. and i hope you can test that proposition today and see where we go from here. thanks for bigger. okay, so emily, back to you in moscow, you know that message from antony blink and that the passage of the path rather for
12:08 pm
diplomacy in dialogue remains open. where do things go from here? after these talks, is there a scenario in which russia would pull its forces back from the border? i think the russian side also wants to keep talking. today we heard also from to view of rufus alexander, was saying that they're not expecting any breakthroughs. there are still demanding these written guarantees from western partners, even though lincoln has made it clear that he's not come to the table with written guarantees on security today. and the kremlin has said, ok, well, we'll just keep waiting for them. so that seems to be a way of playing for time and of continuing these talks, perhaps also in the future on a presidential level. i could imagine that would be something that the russian side would want us to rush and talks on a presidential level when it comes to the military threat. russia also isn't backing down at the moment. their position so far is, you know, we're allowed to move russian troops within russian territory as much as we want.
12:09 pm
so why should we move those troops away from the ukranian border? there's also planned military exercises with bella, bruce, which will be taking place in the next few weeks and equipment is being moved to ballard as we speak. so the military threat is very much on the table, but i think that an actual full out war would be unpopular, including here at home. i don't think that that's something that the kremlin wants . the problem is that with repeating this demand of no eastern expansion of nato, it's almost as if the russian side has kind of backed itself in the core into a corner. and it would be hard to back down from that demand without losing face. i think at this point, no, right, our correspondence, embley sure. when they're in moscow and alexander phenomena in geneva, good to talk to you both. let's get a round up of some other headlines now. mexicans in the border city as you, that's what is, are demanding justice for a murdered lesbian couple. activists marched to the attorney general's office

holocaust urging nations and social media companies to combat anti semitism. the resolution passed on the 80th anniversary of the so called bonds, a conference where nazi leaders coordinated their plans for concentration camps and the murder of nearly 6000000 jews. austria parliament has passed the new law making colbert 1900 vaccination mandatory for adults. it is the 1st european country to approve such a wide reaching measure so far only 72 percent of austrians have been fully vaccinated against the corona virus. one of the lowest rates in western europe. 137 in favor to 33 against austria's vaccine mandate passed by a clear majority in a 1st for any european country legislators said it was a drastic but necessary step. probably compulsory vaccination isn't something we wanted, but unfortunately it's become
12:12 pm
a necessity to close the big vaccination gap in austria. it's my deep conviction that only then will we have a realistic chance, a regaining the life we had before. the corona virus. oh, come from early february, every one over the age of 18 must be vaccinated. with exceptions for those who are pregnant, have a medical exemption, or have recently recovered from covey. 19. after an introductory phase, anyone still holding out could be find thousands of euro's thousands have joined regular street protests against restrictions and vaccination . a few 100 protesters gathered outside parliament in vienna as votes were cast. but inside only the far right freedom party voted against the mandate, their leader said he would continue to refuse to be vaccinated.
12:13 pm

12:14 pm
enjoying the sun in the spanish capital. some guests might even have called it the infection, radius breaking records by the day. but it seems like almost nobody cares. apart from a general mast mandate, few measures are being taken against the virus. but i mean, like we must free ourselves of this fear. you can't live in constant fear on the other, no, be the most l daniel get damaged that this virus can still do, has lessened considerably recently funding there they say it in, i think we are learning to live with the virus. just as we have with a flu virus and with others seeing as getting on day at a man, they know this relaxed attitude is partly based on spain's vaccine nation success. more than 80 percent of spaniards have been jumped at least twice. while the number of hospitalizations has been rising for weeks, the high death rate seen in earlier waves has been absent. that's why spain government has now taken
12:15 pm
a radical step. there will no longer be mass testing are strict quarantine rules in the future. instead, the infection rate will only be estimated if flu instead of a deadly pandemic. this is how prime minister sanchez wants to treat the corona virus in the future, and he sees them serve as a pioneer in europe. but they're also critics that say that it's too early for such experiments. they point out that many spanish clinics continue to work at their limits. one of spain's leading experts, isabella sola also are just caution. she conducts research on the corona virus at the national center for biotechnology class leaders by nothing gone, but we must stay prepared for surprises. the virus development is simply unpredictable, of course, at once to keep spreading, that may result in a weakening of symptoms that it causes. but the opposite can also happen. thankful pianist, masters of what the hell of embodied at the moment. it seems as if it's the people
12:16 pm
in spain who wants to surprise the corona virus with their new attitude. after 2 years of pandemic, they seem to no longer want to believe that the virus can still be dangerous. you're watching, did i be of news telecom on our show 19 year olds are rather for becomes the youngest female pilot is fly solo around the world. will hear about the highs and lows of her record breaking flight that story for you in a moment, but 1st to at damning new report on the child sex abuse scandal rocking the catholic church. it alleges former pope benedict failed to take action to stop for priests accused of child sex abuse in germany. in the 1980s. the report concluded that he covered up the abuse when he was the archbishop of munich turning a blind eye to sexual abuse. that was the definitive conclusion of

in a torrent of abuse claims that have come to light in recent years. further exposing the decades of hidden crimes committed by the catholic church. the u. s. singer meatloaf has died at the age of 74. he was best known for his head's bat out of hell. and i do anything for love. the cause of his death has not been disclosed. a grammy winner was born marvin lea a day. his career span 6 decade and he sold more than a 100000000 records. he also started over $65.00 movies, including the rocky horror picture show. and here's his head. i do anything for life from 1993. 0 oh. oh. oh, but oh and scott,
12:20 pm
roxbury from dw culture is covering this story for us. hi scott. he really was a huge presence in the entertainment industry. tell us more about me. love sighing . yeah, i mean he was a completely larger than life a character um, in his, in his music on, on stage in many films or that that he did a, i mean meatloaf really broke all. busy the rules, he wasn't, any one's idea of what a pop star should look like um or what a pop star should sound like. his music really defied all the pop music or categories, or it was almost operatic in its scope. and, and, and, and also he made these incredibly long pop songs. his, his, his is music songs with, with stretch 891012 minutes long. i could do, i'd do anything for love was over 12 minutes long and spent 5 weeks on the u. s. a top of the u. s. charts. and he managed to break through a, despite all this and become one, the most successful poppers of all time selling upwards of
12:21 pm
a 100000000 albums worldwide. what do you think? set him apart as a singer and a performer? yeah, i think performance is the key a meatloaf said himself that he had trouble being taken seriously as, as a, as a pop star. and that people often saw more as a, as a circus clown. i'm. and i think that it came a bit from it's sort of theatrical background. he started in stage musicals, and he was incredibly theatrical performer. his music was a theatrical and unclean, as i said, broke all the rules. and my favorite song of his is paradise. by the dashboard light, probably the best ever song about making out in the back seat of a car. i'm and that as again, is, is, is, is, has a musical range that goes from maybe janis joplin to, to freddy mercury. and he, as i said, broke all the rules and, and that's why his, his fans worldwide really adored the man. and he really is known around the world as a singer. but i understand he actually considered himself to be 1st and foremost an actor is that right? yes, that's right. as, as it's
12:22 pm
a start on stage and he started and he performed a eddie from the rush or a picture toe in a stage version. before i'm performing the same role in the film version of that, a people of who of love a do film fight club, or remember him as the a big hearted and very large breasted man, who, who consoles edward norton in various a male therapy sessions in that film and he said that he thought himself as an actor, 1st and foremost, and i think that sort of the attract the, the actor khalidi, that sort of performance is really what carried over into his music. i'm not all, critics appreciated that about. his fans definitely did, and i think looking back, we'll see that was truly his contribution to, to pop music into entertainment general. the rats got rocks per from d. w culture on the death of meatloaf at the age of $74.00. thank you very much. now a british belgian teenager has become the youngest woman to fly solo around the world
12:23 pm
after 5 months or needs are rather for it is back on solid ground in belgium. she says she took on the challenge to encourage more girls and women to get involved in science, technology, and ab ation. there was no cabin crew on board to prepare for this landing. at 19 year old daughter of other for touchstone and belgium, she became the youngest women in history to fly solo around the world. and the youngest person to do so, you know, micro like aircraft. a heroes welcome. a way to turn really has to be to say the truth 5 months long and even the last. so it's pretty tricky. even yet it's been a challenge, the always or rather firms around the world, right? spend 5 continents and covered 52000 kilometers. she raised money through sponsorship, and often stayed with host families. czar shared the highs and lows of heard venture on lane. the trip took much longer than expected,
12:24 pm
and there were moments of turbulence. so right now my, my russian visa has just expired. so i'm actually not allowed to get into the country, which is frustrating. no stories that way. i know unless you get to places because i didn't like laying around somebody, i fell on the ground. this little bit was fine and then some of the classes are getting low and low. think at the i 160 feet, which is pretty scary. beyond breaking records, zarbara had a bigger mission meeting locals and giving talks along the way. she tried to inspire other girls and young women to get involved in education, science and technology. that conversion soil that work continue growing up and many other people by the phone. kind of hoping to be a friend. yeah, i'm going to amazing messages from both girls and women to saying that they floated flying up to see what i've been doing,
12:25 pm
which really goes to your mission. i think so. i think i like to think it was an emotional were union for our mother, beatrice. besides, there were some nail biting moments. this is no risk. she is breaking records after all but. but i was very confident in our skills and her experience, and also in the team, the whole team behind. and that when we kept at the same spot, barely out of high school, or rather for want to keep her feet on solid ground for no apply for university. but she hopes her double world record, will encourage girls everywhere to spread their wings in any way they can well, we have a chance to speak to our rutherford a little bit earlier. we asked her what inspired her to embark on her a b ation journey. if she had any scary moments during her solar fight flight and what were some of the highlights, and here's what she had to say. so i always dreamt of doing something crazy in
12:26 pm
flying around the world, but i never thought it be possible. so i always thought it be too dangerous, too expensive, too complicated. so i never, it's just about it. but then i was finishing school and i thought actually this is the perfect time to do something crazy when i've got to do nothing, basically, and fly around the world. so i plan my route. i got sponsorship, i should be soft. a web hosting company from bulgaria came on board to help out, and i basically strip so another old, one of the most challenging moments was flying over siberia. because it's like minor sets of degree shots on the ground and the very long flights where i'd go for hundreds of classes without saying anything human know, roads, electricity, cables in the villages obviously, you know, people. and so if the engine stops then told me, i am hours away from rescue. and i don't know how long i can survive in minus 5 degrees. i'd say some of the high, so again, flying inside there for the interest is very remote places. this high barrier,
12:27 pm
i had to avoid those current aspects, but that was a really interesting place on it. and then tie one is beautiful. saudi arabia is very beautiful as well. so some of these, so the longer more challenging flights will also be the most rewarding, and those are the most amazing or rather for speaking to us there earlier, coming up next on dw our debate. so to the point ahead of the winter olympics in beijing, i guess discuss whether china can beat on a crowned tooth ah, with
