stand by him. it's spiraling tensions between russia and western nations over a possible invasion of ukraine. the elias is sending more ships and fighter jets to bolster defenses in eastern europe. russia has mass, an estimated 100000 troops near ukraine's border. meanwhile, the european union says it will continue to pursue a diplomatic solution to the crisis. foreign ministers have been meeting in brussels and holding talks via video with the u. s. secretary of state anti blinking, that you use time to pull out as the block is sending a strong message of unity against russian aggression or collective diplomatic efforts to convince russia to take the best of dialogue will continue. even though the russian rhetoric does inspire a lot of confidence, but should the promise you fail, we are very well advance in the preparation of responses to a potential russian aggregate aggression. and certainly
7:05 pm
he will be a quick and determined action with a strong unity. not only we seen did a via union, but also internationally. your top diplomat, they're speaking a, let's bring in. jack parodied up his brussels correspondent, a jack, the e u is still pursuing very much a diplomatic dialogue as a means to a resolution to this ongoing crisis. what exactly are their options? this is the big question. the sort of diplomatic efforts have been extremely difficult and strained, mainly led by the united states. as we saw with those geneva talks, for instance, between so gay lover of the russian foreign minister and the secretary of state of the us. anthony, blinking in the e was kind of sidelined from those discussions, but the europeans have much stronger economic ties to russia and therefore much more power regarding things like sanctions. we don't know what those quicken

determined measures that joseph burrell was outlining that could be maybe things like ending the north stream to pipeline a gas pipeline, which is going to bring russian gas into europe and is a, a pride of, of the russian, the russians who obviously won't be able to sell that gas and it comes through germany. so the germans until now have been a bit reluctant to talk about that. coming off the table over the weekend, german chancellor left shouts indicated. maybe sort of could come into play in the discussions. also potentially there could be measures like ending rushes, access or russian banks access to the swift payment system. a lot of them are heavily reliant on that piece of sort of european backend software that does a lot of banking transactions. and that could really affects the economy. we don't also know what the sort of harder measures that they're talking about potentially with sort of troops. obviously the european union is not a military alliance like nato is. but we know that a lot of the countries in the you want to start talking about exactly how we
7:07 pm
protect the security of the european nations. jack the white house announced moments ago that u. s. president joe bind will hold a video caught video call rather with you leaders. what does that signal will it signal specifically from the white house? an attempt to show some unity. we've had some crack sort of start to appear in the trans atlantic relationship, let alone among e u. member states. and actually interestingly, in that phone, in that press conference with joseph burrell, he indicated that the europeans who were joined by on, on this meeting by secretary of state anthony blinking, we're not convinced by the u. s. s. decision to pull the families of embassy staff in kevin ukraine out if they wanted to go. staff still have to a choice to stay. but he said it wasn't in jonesborough that it wasn't an evacuation and they weren't convinced that you country's need to do so with continuing to see these sort of slight divisions and positions and actions. and i

think joe biden, the u. s. president, who is obviously the strongest player in this new russia, in the u. s. of a c being mega nuclear, our nation's. he's going to want to try and make sure that there's european leaders that are joining him to italy, france, u. k. germany, poland, and the head of nato, and the to you, presidents are of the commission and the council. he's going to try, i think, to try and get everybody sing of the same him. she joined this video. cool. i did have you said jack park reporting from brussels. thank you very much. one person has reportedly been killed and several others injured any shooting in the german city of heidelberg, according to police. an assailant shot at people in a lecture hall at heidelberg university in the south of germany. before killing himself. the gunman is said to have been a student at the university. earlier german chancellor, olaf schultz hath this to say. it breaks my heart to hear this news.
7:09 pm
my thoughts are with the relatives and the victims. and of course with the students of the university of hydro bag. the german chancellor, there's a reacting to the shooting and heidelberg. stephanie burnett is in heidelberg, near the scene where they're shooting took place. stephanie, what do we know about the suspect and their motive? who here's what we know so far, just behind me is where this attack took place earlier today. what we know is that a man entered the lecture hall while class was going on an open fire with a long barreled gun. it is believed that he ran out and is now dead. police secured the area after the campus was on lock down. the police have been cautioning against speculating why this attack happened,
7:10 pm
and they will be continuing their investigations and to understand more. exactly why and what is the motive behind this attack? 70, how a police treating this incident. again, police are cautioning against speculation. a press conference is imminent and there will be more details to come to light. but as mentioned, all we know is that a man attacked the lecture hall. the scene is now secure, and students are now walking around campus, so there is no longer a threat. there hasn't been a threat for many hours. and so, but we will hear more about what the motive is behind this attack. and you'll have it here 1st, as soon as we find that out. how has the community reacted to stephanie to this fatal shooting? students? as you can imagine, were shocked when this was going on. this is
7:11 pm
a community where this is a popular university town, and it is one of germany's best universities. there are around 30000 students who go here. i spoke to one person who was in a nearby building who was told to secure the building in her her room, specifically rather to secure the room and to hide until the lockdown was officially called off. she had concerns, but she was also incredibly relieved that police were so quick to act and to come to the scene and secure the area. but we have to remember that this is also a town and one person i spoke to reference how that this is such a tiny community. and there's an overwhelming sense of a need to protect the students here as well. so while the students are of course, directly affected, there are larger questions and concerns for higher bag as a whole is over you reported stephanie burnett's are reporting from heidelberg.
7:12 pm
thank you. i'm going to stay in germany or chance the olaf schultz and the country . 16 state premieres have a great to keep the current rules against the spread of coven, 19 and placed. during their talks at the chancery they decided, a tightening of restrictions is not necessary at the moment in spite of the rapid spread of the amok wrong variant that is causing record infection numbers. here in germany, we can take you now to a political correspondence at benjamin alvarez, a gruber, benjamin. where do we find you? a close to alexander, not one of those protests against the cove. at 19 restriction. it's happening right now. you can see behind me, there are many people walking around. they want to all to do a self in front of the f, one of germany's public broadcast this to also continue with their criticism towards their cover. is there protesting against the measures that are in place now
7:13 pm
to hold the numbers that are rising here in germany due to the only from barrier? now obviously of what we've just been reporting is that the government has decided not to tighten restrictions further, not loosen them either, but that is not appeasing the people rallying behind you. well, the people that are rallying, they started at alexander plus one of the main squares here in berlin. they protested against what they call a cove it corona dictatorship. they protest against what health minister is said also that the need to be new measures in place to try to decrease the numbers off new cases said they were seeing their protesting. they're saying that the vaccines are not efficient enough, and they're calling also for an analogy to return. but of course, the authorities have a different, difficult and situation. they will, they have to try to find a balance, something that they have to see on a day to day, week to week basis to see how they it's possible to decrease the numbers,
7:14 pm
but also it's possible how to continue the critical infrastructure. going benjamin, can you give us a sense of the people that are participating in this shift from the looks of it quite large demonstration who is participating and it's not the only demonstrations here in berlin. what they are doing is having several small protests. we also have counter pro is what they say these people protesting the measures that they are a big part of society. they want the restrictions to be lifted immediately that don't trust sale thorn is they don't us the measures that are in place and always try to represent themselves as a big card off the population that is standing up. but in reality is the majority of people in this country are following the rules of trying to follow also that dissent, jules, also trying to get a vaccine. but of course, there is an important part of the population that does not want to get the job to
7:15 pm
doesn't i want to get a, the vaccine that say that authorities all the reacting. and what's really interesting looking at this movement is that they've organized themselves across different cities. when they started back with the 1st lockdown, they came from several parts of germany to protest here in berlin, calling that this restrictions go too far, that they should be lifted. and they call themselves is freedom, freedom, a people that just want their freedom, this lateral thinking movement that has been a growing over the years as well. and of course now is also trying to get out story these to lose and return as they are still debating on continuing and to have more of them a to be a whole numbers up and actually thank you so much. benjamin benjamin alvarez. so gruber reporting and thank you for watching. ah.
