a silver lining to last year is devastating volcanic eruption i'm chelsea delaney. welcome to the show. walt disney co said it had added nearly 12000000 new streaming subscribers in the final 3 months of last year. that's far above the 7000000 subscribers. analysts had been expecting disney plus has quickly become a force in the world of content streaming since launching 2 years ago. but an initial search and subscribers during the pandemic has cooled. disney string strong results, contrast with those from industry lead, netflix, which spark concerns about the future of the industry last month with a dismal 1st quarter forecast. now for more in this, i'm joined by our correspondent and waltz on wall street, jens corta. so again, there had been a lot of angst. a lot of anxiety coming into these results from disney. has the narrative changed? is all good with disney now?
7:18 am
well i mean in the, since the last them earnings report to the stock is down by about to 15 percent and for the last 12 months actually 25 percent. so one of the issues for disney was that in pen demik time. so it was pretty difficult to produce use shelf and filled meaning less content. and therefore at the last earnings reports, disney actually disappointed when it comes to subscribers for disney plus. so that says obviously change to the numbers, very strong and also the theme park business. it's getting much better so it looks like the, at least if i look at the initial, after our reaction here on wall street, that we see quite a pop in the stock price for what disney. so this is a bit different from what we saw from netflix last month, a really catastrophic slide. and that stock about 20 percent after they said there
7:19 am
are there subscriber growth is going to be much lower than, than analysts had been expecting. what do you make of this and what this tells us these 2 different reports about the future of the streaming industry? yeah, overall, i would not say that people are getting tired of streaming even if the economy around the globe keeps opening up. but there's just so much competition out there. so you have disney plus, you have amazon prime, you have netflix, you have a huge, huge, for instance. i looked it up. so you tube has about 5000000000 movie. it's shown of people watch $5000000.00 movies or shows or whatever on youtube each single day. so that has become a big force. and then what we've also heard was all this competition with all those offers that are out there. and some people actually wait for a certain movie or show, so they subscribe to that service. and once they've seen the show,
7:20 am
they subscribe. so that's obvious. the also seems to be a trend that some of those streaming services have to deal with. and course in new york, thanks so much now to some of the other global business stories making news. toyota has logged in on the 7000000000 dollar net profit for its past quarter. that despite a global trip shortage, that has what production cuts for the japanese, japanese auto giant. it's lead toyota to lower its production goals for the full year. well as profit forecast remains unchanged, cell phone replacement cycles are getting longer. according to a study european users hold onto a smart phone for 40 month, on average for us users, it's 24 months. that's more than 25 percent longer than they used to. because of growing sustainability concerns, and the trend is set to fail to cost phone makers, billions and revenue. now australia says it's standing by lithuania and met

a dispute with china. the baltic country has been slapped with sanctions by china, including a boycott of its products. all because it allowed taiwan to set up a representative office there. now both lithuania and australia are calling on the world trade organization to intervene the lithuanian foreign minister and met with his australian counterpart on tuesday. both countries want to strengthen their ties and take to an action against china's trade blockade. and in these developments, lithuania has urged countries to resist what it calls chinese coersion. shares with the, with the way any and foreign minister had to say both russia and china currently ask act as disruptors of the global rules. they slowed up. so basically it's not, it's not regional. it's not just in the pacific regional issues or european regional issues is some of the global players that are acting destructively. and we

have to ask, act counter disruptive lee. or here in germany, the economy ministry is raising the alarm about natural gas stocks in the country. as there's rise about a possible invasion of ukraine by russia. gas reserves and the country are down to near 35 percent. that's below the critical level that the government, the government says is necessary to withstand potential extreme cold knock. compare that to 2020 when analyst day stocks never dipped below 71 percent. meanwhile, japan is trying to help by sending some liquefied natural gas to europe after both the u. s. and the you request. additional supplies relations are frosty, between, with the waiting and china all because the baltic country and taiwan are forging closer economic ties. taiwan as a self hold island, which nevertheless, beijing claims as its own. now china is boycotting lithuanian goods. a blow for businesses. this lithuanian liquor isn't allowed in china. $60000.00 bottles we're

headed there, but within, diverted to taiwan. yet district is very popular. in lithuania williams, it's inexpensive them and we're proud of it because it's made here is there, but it was dana mccain. relations are frosty, between with the when you're in china and there's much more at stake than alcoholic beverages. china is boycotting all goods from the small country. the crisis was triggered by the opening of an official taiwanese representatives office in the lithuanian capital vilnius. eric wong is taiwan, is representative in lithuania and understands how tricky the situation is for his host country. chinese 3rd party of which is responsible for this. i think china should of find a solution. they should step back. they should not do this any more. and at the

same time, we understand that china will continue to bully towns, friends. so taiwan is willing to provide or what whatever assistance week we could over. as recently as the summer containers were rolling from lithuania to china via the new silk road route. in the meantime, china white lithuania from its customs database. the result, the loading terminal in lithuania is at a standstill with the waning politicians plain china g r c is trying to build a sino centric world, ignore the international world order. and instead of supporting fee market build a system where beijing's political will is dictating where businesses should go and what they should do. the lithuanian economy is suffering from the boycott. german and french companies are also caught in the middle. china insists on blocking all

goods made. in lithuania, german business representatives and the baltic states are counting on a solution through the world trade organization. class of all cleared china is violating w t o renewals here. the e u internal market is also affected as to because of our close economic ties been, which is why brussels has now actively intervened at cisco. soon on active in concepts and in the interest of our company. often we hope the situation will ease up soon. does this laga schnell and bond taiwan also wants to play? it's part to ease the burden. it wants to fund investment projects in lithuania, to the tune of 1200000000 euros a spanish island palm. i was devastated last year by a volcanic eruption that destroyed the homes and livelihoods of thousands of islanders. but it may also prove a lifeline for one of spain's poorest areas as investments and even tourists return
