a bank owned and his dad about one of this is i'd like to keep in mind with oh oh no, we don't the season it to me so plainly it does not live. if you look at my son who, hello, a very good day on layla, iraq, welcome to the w news, and we've been just airing a life. a press conference is being hauled a as we speak of the ukrainian at present. val, autumn, year to lensky speaking. there after having met with german chancellor, all of shorts. they have just finished holding crazy stocks in key of in an effort
3:05 pm
to stave off an eminent russian invasion and the german chancellor. now speaking, i don't know if we want to go live to that. the meeting, the meeting a comes as the us says, moscow now has more than 100000 troops, our net ukraine's borders and could attack any day now. meanwhile, russia has signaled a willingness to continue diplomatic talks. a lot to unpacking, too were get german. the german perspective. i suggest we go to my colleague at nina, at hossa, and you see their life pictures from kia ukraine, where the german char, for allah schultz is speaking. after that meeting with the ukrainian president farmers lensky. nina, um, what kind of reception that a chancellor get it was colder than know many had hoped for probably because of course the, the germany does have somewhat of a controversial position at the moment because germany has, over the last couple of weeks,
3:06 pm
refused to spell out that controversial gas pipeline, that 2nd vents ukraine beach. so that goes from russia to germany. that that would be part of the economic sanctions package that germany would launch ones of russia invade. so there has been a lot of anger about this on the ukranian side. and i would be curious to find out where that will chose actually brings himself to say the word not stream to because so far he hasn't done that. and other than that, ukraine and germany keep trying to stress that they are like minded partners, that they are very close allies. and the fact that we'll have short travel to cuba before he goes to moscow tomorrow. that's what we heard of presidency lensky say in the press conference just now that we saw the beginning of at that is a clear sign that ukraine understands that germany is closely by its side. now if i
3:07 pm
may, i don't know if we're going to go to left shows, but he's probably speaking in german, so that's not much help. but maybe i can sum up a bit of water. president zalinski has said in this address to journalists that came met a long time after it had been scheduled. because of course, these 2 leaders have had a lot more to talk about than many people had expected to coordinate their strategy . so presidents lensky, stress, the fact that ukraine was an important ally of the you. he thanked germany for it's a for it stands on supporting ukraine sovereignty. he also highlighted the fact that germany help revive the circle normandy format, where it, many, france, ukraine, and russia sit around negotiating table, trying to broker some sort of a crisis management scheme and presidency lensky. stress that,
3:08 pm
and thank germany for this. now, when it came to moscow, so presidency, lensky, m. p, said, only joined efforts can help us face this joint threat that we're facing the president lensky. stressing again, of course, that this is not a crisis that concerns only ukraine and russia. this is very much under germany, the government is in agreement here. this is very much seen as a potential threat to continental europe. so this is why perhaps also the german government has been more k g than some of the allies over in the u. s. so even in the u. k. and you know, what is the best big task ahead for the chancellor? now many people, prior to his departure to k of said that all our choices job was to use those last opportunity that many perceived as the last opportunity to try and keep the dialogue going. and in order to do that, he had to try and find a way of getting some sort of
3:09 pm
a concession from ukraine that he could then take into is to case that he packs on his trip to moscow tomorrow. so that he can offer vladimir putin some sort of scenarios, something where they can see the, the value of actually getting back to the negotiating table. now, germany's position is still very clear. they are still convinced that war can still be avoided and that not all diplomatic efforts have been exhausted, which is why they continue to talk. but of course, today will have shows when it came to ukraine and had to send a clear message as well. and i'm sure that we're going to get the details of that right now in that press conference that we're probably going to cover for the rest of the day. so he's probably going to spell out just how much money germany is willing to invest into ukraine in the coming weeks and months medium term. but most importantly, now,
3:10 pm
short term because ukraine is arguing that this current crisis with russia has already hit ukraine very, very badly. the economy, even though there are no boots on the ground yet. so german perspective still holding out for diplomacy. if i understand you correctly, what is germany's dilemma? now germany's dilemma or in a nutshell is that it doesn't see itself as an external factor. it would still, it would very much be involved if it came to a situation where vladimir putin tried to provoke in ukraine or launch some sort of a different military operation. many people are saying we would probably not see tanks rolling into kids, but there are also high ranking officials here in germany that say, if the diplomatic channels failed and we could see a situation where them russia would use other means of hybrid warfare or an attack
3:11 pm
hospitals, for example, just cut off energy from certain regions, et cetera, and germany is very much just very close geographically to ukraine. also, there is the fear that the baltic states would be targeted next. if this doesn't work out brokering peace or actually trying to manage this crisis, that doesn't work, then let have been puting could target other former soviet republics like the baltic states that are members of the european union next. so this is vital that that doesn't happen. and then germany, of course, is an important trading nation. it's got a lot of, it's g d, p comes from exports, and russia is an important trading partner. so you don't just have to look at that controversial gas pipeline. you just look at all the other figures that you see when you look at ad trade with russia and you see the kind of dilemma that the german government finds itself in. that is, yeah, i mean, the proverbial being stuck between a rock and
3:12 pm
a hard place so that you outlined their next stop moscow, you know, where chance a short will meet with the russian president, president vladimir putin. is there a sense that president putin is prepared to cut a deal with germany? well, president putin televised a conversation that he had today with the foreign minister lover of where putin asked. so is there any way for us to find a way to towards a proper dialogue again with the west or are they fooling us and the foreign minister lover of that said that to know there is still a way of getting back to the tables. we might, we haven't exhausted all options yet. now this is of course, a small sign that maybe just maybe they do want to keep a door open. also, after all, are short tweeted this morning that he wants to see very clear signs from moscow
3:13 pm
that they are intending to de escalate. or also hearing from the russian defense ministry that apparently some of those military drills are about to end. now all of these things matter in this crucial moment, of course, because only if there is the willingness to be a bit more transparent about your own intentions. only then can you actually sit down together around the table. and that is something that germany hopes to achieve . they've said we need more transparency, we need to talk more about what the, the specific interests of each side are. and then we can hopefully find a situation where we can sit around a table. but also when you speak behind closed doors here to high ranking german government officials, he also hear that don't be fooled as long as latino who's in is in power. he's not going to change his overall intention of reversing the, essentially the last 30 years and get into a situation where russia has a bigger sphere of influence. again,
3:14 pm
and ignoring essentially other countries sovereignty, as long as he is in power, the best we can do is help manage the crisis, but we cannot bring peace. and for international viewers in a who are just join. yes, right now, i just want to point out that we are covering the press conference are now being held by the ukrainian president of a lot of years lensky and german chancellor schultz if, after their crisis talks and moments ago. unfortunately, we don't have the english translation at the moment we're working on it. so that's why i would like to pose one last question to, you know, if i may, what will the chancellor try to avoid doing when he meets with president putin? hey, this, harry, why are you late? no, the problem is that the west has been very clear. they don't really know what vladimir putin knows and many people are saying,
3:15 pm
does he even know what he wants other than being taken seriously? again, for a long period over the last couple of years, vladimir putin was not in the limelight. the americans had started focusing on china. a europe was busy with itself, with briggs did, and many people were focusing on the pressing issue of tackling incident climate change. so hootin is very much back on the gender again. now all of charles does have to give him the feeling that this is a partner, that a partnership that is worth working towards. and of course that we can't change the do a graphical situation anyway. so whether people like it or not, germany is very close to russia, so they will have to find some way of your staying in touch if war is to be avoided . but that's what you hear from government officials and all i've shoals is going to try and convince people that it's worth getting back to the negotiating table.
3:16 pm
and at the moment you see that normandy format as the way to go, where germany and france essentially coordinate all their strategies very closely together with the rest of the european union. and then they bring ukraine and russia back to the table. and hopefully while they talk, they can't fight each of them. nina has, they're giving us the back story perspective and insight, dw politics respond in your house. and you know, thank you very, very much. while the 1st contingent of german troops, reinforcements have arrived in lithuania to bolster security in the region. as fears of a russian attack on ukraine intensified, the german defense ministry said it would send $380.00 additional soldiers to shore up nato's eastern flag. in recent months, moscow has mass 100000 troops, honest border with ukraine. the u. s. has warned moscow could launch an invasion at
3:17 pm
any moment. and in lithuania is my colleague of you corresponded jack perez jacka, germany sending troops. so can you tell us about them? indeed, so earlier today 70 a troops arrived on an a 400 m, a german luftwaffe, a plane here at counties airport. in lithuania, that the 1st of $350.00 troops that will now contribute to the nato in halls for forced of italian. here in lithuania, bringing the numbers up to somewhere in the region of $1500.00 troops predominantly over around a half of them and i will be, will be germans. we know that the soldiers that are being deployed here are artillery soldiers. they're reconnaissance specialists, medics and also interestingly, nuclear and biological warfare specialists around 60 of them will now join this battalion in, if you ania,
3:18 pm
it's been welcomed by v lithuanian authorities. and as you say, this is in response to bolt it concerns of invasion. with those over a $100000.00 russian troops, a mast on the border. give us a deeper sense or jack about how lithuania sees the russian build up on you. crazy border or people here, a worry. there is a longstanding concern and the baltic countries, lithuania, estonia, latvia, and in the poland are frequently concerned. people are worried about what russia is doing on the other side of the border. in normal times it's important to say as well that there are 10 days worth of russian or military drills going on in baton rouge. just over the border from lithuania and you remember there was the migration crisis that's been going on for a few months were belarus was put, she migrants across the border into lithuania and into other baltic countries. there's a lot of tension in this area, and i think that these additional troops, while there's, you know, $300.00 isn't that many. it's an intention to try and show,
3:19 pm
especially from the germans, that they are contributing to nature, that they're doing what they can for their allies. jack erica, reporting from a lithuania. jack, thank you very much. and i like to go back to our top story to where you craned it. of the correspond. nick holly is in the ukranian capital of keith, and he has been following that press conference that is underway between german cesar olive schultz and as the ukrainian president. nick, i 1st want to ask you what the main takeaways were from this meeting. well, and the atmospherics and the body language was surprisingly positive and friendly. there had been a lot of criticism of germany and of that government had a bottle of shots from ukraine in the weeks leading up to this. first of all, that germany was basically nowhere to be seen, was trying to sit this out. then germany's refusals to budge on delivering
3:20 pm
defensive weapons ukraine. or to rule out north stream to that ghost gas pipeline. ever being commissioned right away as a kind of preemptive strike. both of those requests from key of have not been fulfilled by germany as such. but there are signs that germany is always willing to provide some new money. that is obviously particular welcoming situation where you cranes coming on a lot of strain right now. all this tension even without shot being fired, already having an impact on ukraine's economy. the currency under pressure, so better atmospherics than expected, and a fairly boiled seeming volume zalinski. all right, now is ukraine. what, what is the sense that you've got is you can still holding out hope for diplomacy while that has been the line all along here from give, am give actually down, playing all those us announcements. we had u. s. intelligence briefings being announced. and by the, by administration talks of specific dates this coming wednesday as the date of potential invasion,
3:21 pm
the ukrainian side has all along said they don't see that coming in quite the same way. they don't see the same intelligence that could be down to them having access to less in the way of intelligence material. but also they would claim they just understand the russians better having, having them as their neighbors said tommy memorial am. so a more positive spin from care of, but still that hasn't stopped them asking for weapons and support. they're obviously very worried. and there was a phase yesterday early today where you really had a sense to lots officials. we're getting very nervous. we heard the ambassador of ukraine to a london talk about may be ukraine, saying that it won't join nato in return for some de escalation. now, he had to row back on that pretty soon, and we heard from below them is let's get that. that is not something that is on the table for now. i cause that that news has been making a lot of waves neg, i'm not a lot of direct russia ukraine diplomacy and now i understand ukraine has requested an urgent meeting with the russia over the russian to build up. is this likely to
3:22 pm
happen? well, moscow has basically been ignoring here for the past few months, has been very rude about ukraine saying that it has basically no agency. and the ukraine is a little more than an american, porn, or vassal. there's no point talking to give that the, any people talk to all those in washington direct. and they've also been ignoring most european countries in saying that any negotiation with them also have little points. and this is in a kind of a more multilateral format, through the o. s. e. whether all the russians will decide to turn up is still open, but it's definitely more about ukraine showing that it's doing its best. and that it's using all possible options to get the russians to that table. and to prove to the new western partners that ukraine is not exporting for a fight that ukraine is doing its best to avoid a conflict there in europe. and to that. and i mean, there has been a lot of difference in messaging at the type of dissonance where you'd, the ukrainian present, has downplayed the prospects of war and the u. s. telling basically anyone who is prepared to listen, that war is imminent. has that changed in the mean time?
3:23 pm
what can you tell us about that? will diff it's been very striking in all those details we've heard from washington, often and a fact checkable because they're based on classified intelligence about false flag operations. the russians are meant to be preparing for ukraine, according to the u. s. side or other attempts to disable as ukraine and potentially create a pretext for intervention. and all along the volume zalinski, talking about panic, being ukraine's biggest enemy right now, trying to avoid ukrainians. rushing out the shops to buy basic supplies and fuel in expectations of the imminent. i think the daphne has been a closeness between kevin washington. there was actually fairly tense calls between savanski and biden in recent weeks. i think they've seemed to smooth over most of those, but i think they're in a very good situation. it's easy to talk about a russian invasion if you haven't have, if you have 1000 kilometers and an ocean between you and russia, here in ukraine where, you know, lots of the country's big cities are just within a matter of dozens of clumps of russia. this kind of stuff really strikes home and
3:24 pm
if you kenyans do really believe this is on the doorstep about to happen. then we could see the situation here destabilizing very fast and the ukranian government, or was he painfully aware of that? now what's the mood among real people there you've been talking to people in keith, but also just around the country. well, definitely there was an extraordinary disconnect of the last few months, even though this has been going on since late last year. those russian tanks being moved close to crane lots of military tech latino satellite images being analyzed endlessly trying to work out quite how many personnel are there on the ground and what is there in terms of the hardware and for the longest time, it seemed like most ukrainians kind of didn't really take the seriously went over their heads. they thought this was just another escalation of the kind. it seemed time and time again in the last 7 years since russia and it's crimea, and most people will say this is just brinkman ship. but now when they saw foreign diplomats leaving in a hurry, moving their operations either out of the country or to the far west of ukraine to
3:25 pm
the border with the e. nato with flights being canceled, you see ordinary ukrainians, realizing that this is for real, that this could affect them very soon. and lots of people who previously had downplayed this in people. i know here have talked about preparing cases with documents, with cash, with basic supplies in case they need to leave their homes in a hurry. so this is really striking home after weeks of people basically having the things in there is a, nick, you've been reporting on ukraine for very, very, very long time. and given us the insight perspective if diplomacy prevails and obviously everybody's holding, i hope that the pharmacy prevails. does the pressure is pressure then released on ukraine, or does the pressure just continue on ukraine? well, it seems like russia, i mean, it's kind of clear that russia has these ability ability to very easily ramp up pressure. and ukraine, for instance, wanting is happening right now. is the russian navy is conducting exercise in the black sea and has basically cut off most of the shipping lanes into ukraine's main
3:26 pm
ports. so basically, all its main expos grain, metals will have a lot harder time at reaching foreign bias. that's a direct economic impact without russia having to fire a single shot. and that is something that russia and maintains and will not lose. i think the long term effect, though, even if this is resolved peacefully without any kind of military escalation, is a kind of gnawing sense of uncertainty. people i know here have delayed getting mortgages buying property, committing to this country, their own country because yet lots of people here haven't lost a years. constantly be reminded of quite how vulnerable they are. and people, you know, often say, well, i might as well leave this country, build my business somewhere else, because there's no guarantee that all my hard work will be rewarded and that i will not lose it because of some bigger geopolitical issue that i can't control denovia correspondent nicoli, reporting from cage and ukraine. nick, thank you for your continued coverage and heartily, yoga reminder of our main story. this, our german chance,
