a business i rob watson berlin, welcome to the program. contentions between russia and ukraine, force europe into an energy rethink. much of the continent is heavily reliant on natural gas imported from russia, but weakened relations between moscow and is european neighbors mean that supply is looking less secure. the latest figures show that the e u. imported 168000000000 cubic meters of gas from russia last year. that's an awful lot to lose. should russia for whatever reason, choose to turn off the taps? remember europe is already in the middle, middle of an energy crunch. so how could your make up for the loss? well, liquefied natural gas could be a solution. currently, the e, you imports a 100 tankers worth of allen g a month, but to replace russian gas, that number would have to triple from the united states. so is europe in any position to live without russian gas?
11:18 am
well, let's discuss that very question. with david butter. he's an associate fellow at the international affairs think tank chatham house and join me shortly here on the program. so can you just tell us whether importing energy for the united states could ever truly make up for the loss of russian gas? well, we clearly can't hear from david garza from chatham house. we'll try to get him up a bit later on in the program and we'll have another go at that. but in the meantime, let's have a look at some of the other global business stories that are making use around the world. b, p is due to stop producing aviation fuel containing 5 percent left over cooking oil at the plant in germany. on monday, the raw material comes from canteens and catering businesses, which is energy companies. airlines can use the fuel immediately without any technical modifications. new data shows the german government spent 42000000000

11:21 am
but the pile of dirty money is huge. we're talking about 7000000000 euros worth of funds and the crimes we're talking about here. as you mentioned, they're not petty crimes. they're linked to corrupt business men and politicians. yes. but they're also links to people involved in torture and drug trafficking. so this is an enormous bank, 2nd biggest in switzerland, but it says a brand that people will know around the world. couldn't people expect credit suisse about shipping a bit more attention to who it's allowing to hold money. and it's a cow exactly rob. and that's why credit suisse is coming under such intense scrutiny, because not only are some of these people very well known, but their crimes are well documented and also well known. i'll just go through a very brief list here. we've gotten big names like the sons of the former egyptian, a dictator, hosni mubarak, they've been convicted of embezzlement. and you might also remember the case of the former siemens employee, a german named edwards. i dell. he confessed in 2006 to german authorities to his

role in an industrial sized bribery scheme. yet his accounts remained open well into the next decade. there's another case of a swedish man. he's serving a life sentence for human trafficking, convicted in 2011. his account stayed open for another 2 years. and we also have accounts linked to business men and politicians involved with the business wayland state oil company. had a visa, notorious for the last few years for being engulfed in the corruption. but these are all red flags. a lot of key words here that if your monitoring these accounts should be red flags, but yet these accounts stayed open. so the question becomes, shouldn't credit suisse have known that these accounts were linked to often convicted criminal? it was that safe for them. so that's a great question. they have responded. they strongly reject the idea that the bank has problematic business practices. and they've said that these matters, as they've called them, are historical, with some cases dating back to the 1940 s. and they noted that 90 percent of the
