money away from the war and saving my life, my children's lives. in the russian invasion since tens of thousands of families fling to neighboring countries with some men, forced to turn back and support the war effort. ah, i'm ami a niece of welcome to the program. there are reports of clashes and parts of the ukrainian capital key of just hours after president viola demerit lensky warned. russia would start a major assault overnight. the ukrainian army says that repelled an attack on one of the main roads leading into the center. fighting is also raging and other parts of the country. though u. s. defense officials believe russia has encountered more resistance than it expected. here's the lensky mice gazette. of them i have to say absolutely openly. tonight will be more difficult in the day. many of our state cities are under

attack. i had the means nothing to sell. now. yeah. avenue to night. the enemy will use all its forces to break out offences in a vile, tough, and in humane way to night. they will attempt to storm us. explosions were heard throughout friday, across the ukrainian capital, and many residents have taken shelter where they can. government has handed out thousands of guns to ordinary citizens and is urging them to build petrol bombs to resist. the northern outskirts of give the front lines in the russian assault on ukraine's capital volunteers have taken up arms to defend the city. but without heavy defensive weapons, there's only so much they can do. if not enough, in lot of school, full helicopter is not enough. and not, not a film that i need, this is something thought outnumbered and outgunned, but refusing to quit ukraine's cabinet, sent

a message of encouragement on social media. oliver was but event don't. the president is here. we're all here. who school are military or wide citizens of society are here? we don't, we're all here defending our independence, our country shortly. but when it will remain so slow unless glory to our men and women defenders some glory to ukraine, flow green are off. many of those who aren't picking up arms or taking refuge in the cities metro. oh is them way it's safer under ground. i even woke up today with the news that there was shelling in the central area so they can even target our house. are you on so it's safer, underground garage, but more about the also the shelter in our building is not as deep underground as the metro station. but hello john, up a little national would info those who want to get out of the city,

find roads choked with vehicles, some out of gas or abandoned by those who continued on foot. the situation at cube central train station doesn't look much better. oh so again with them since we've been trying all day since this morning, as you can see here, it's unrealistic trust. no, there's lots of us a dog we can't fit. we're going back to see bianca with him. he has to push through, but how he supposed to do that with a child. the dog is scared, it's dangerous. we won't go. and honestly, i don't have the energy to wait for the next one. i just don't. but even getting out of kids, there's no guarantee of safety. many men of fighting age who make it to the border, are being turned back by the ukrainian military and told to report to the front lines. for the latest developments, i'm joined by d. w. political correspondent, simon young. simon, what can you tell us about the russian advance on que?
5:05 am
yeah, it's pretty clear that they said vance continues apace and is intensifying and does . he said there are now reports of serious fighting in downtown areas of key of the capital as well. we've had reports of explosions, less than a kilometer from the presidential headquarters and also of an attack by russian troops on a ukrainian army base on it in a central avenue. and of course, from this distance, it's very difficult to confirm and verify these kind of reports. but the ukrainian side says they've repelled that attack. but it's all a sign that, you know, this is getting closer and closer to, to the center of key. and also in the environs of the capital, there been further reports of explosions, missile strikes with the fighting around a key electricity generating station and also around the airports and the

airfield. so, you know, i think all of this is coming together. it's pretty clear, as president zaleski said, you know, he's expecting a major offensive against key have a by the russian forces and it could be happening now. if it's not, it's going to be coming pretty soon. and what about ukrainian civilians? how have they been resisting this advance? yeah, i mean, it's an extraordinary thing because we've seen this sort of dual reality for the civilians. we've seen those scenes of people trying to plead the capital, flee west woods. the enormous traffic jams is people tried to get out, and of course, the increasingly thousands of people streaming across the border into poland to the other neighboring countries in the west. and on the other hand, many ukrainians, particularly in the cities, are staying put, trying to carry on with normal life. yes, the sheltering when the sirens go off in the metro stations and in basements by day,
5:07 am
they're sort of expect inspecting the wreckage of missile strikes against residential buildings and so on. but at the same time, they're trying to use public transport, which amazingly is still operating in many places, or they're driving their cars, passed the columns of advancing tanks. so it must be a very surreal life. and a rather disjointed life for many people in ukraine. and of course, a great fear goes along with that. now, russian president vladimir putin offered to sit up peace talks with ukraine. how likely is that at this point, and what is he looking for? yeah, well, the stated objectives of vladimir putin are the demilitarization of ukraine and the removal of their government. so those are not or spacious starting point for any peace talks. nonetheless, as you say, you know, both kiev and moscow have been talking about this idea football. what they've mainly been talking about is where
5:08 am
a piece talks might eventually be held. the russians have suggested they could send a delegation of senior officials to the bell. russ, capital, minsk, but surprisingly the ukrainian. so i'd not keen on that because after all this invasion is launched in part from the bell, russian territory. but other places have also been mentioned where talks could be held such as war saw and budapest. i have to say, i think at this point, talk of peace talks is something of a diversion, because as we said, we still got serious fighting going on. of course, eventually all sides will have to get back around the negotiating table, who have his left after the fighting has finished. well, it's a tense moment for ukraine, right now d, w political correspondence, simon young. thank you. russia has vetoed a draft un security council resolution that condemned its invasion of ukraine and
5:09 am
called on moscow to withdraw troops immediately. 11 countries on the 15 member council voted in favor while india, china, and the united arab emirates, abstained on you months ago. so 11 votes in favor, one against 3 abstentions. it was the result. everyone is expecting russia blocking criticism of its invasion. i'm not surprised that russia voted against russia is keen on continuing. it's not the style course of action. the u. s. also slammed russia for it's vito secured you can the tell this resolution, but you cannot veto our voices. you cannot nito the truth. you cannot veto our principles. you cannot veto the ukrainian people best. but moscow's representative said the resolution was one sided or so. so as a scoop, what was left out was the way that the ukranian authorities,
5:10 am
with the encouragement of their western patrons consistently and cynically shirked the responsibility to implement the minsk agreements. the lynchpin, which was a direct dialogue with the residents of the countries east. while the resolution may have been didn't from the start, the ukraine and its allies, there was a small glimmer of hope. they say china's abstention demonstrated just how isolated russia is on the international stage. your father bill, when the russian invasion has prompted many ukrainians to flee the country. the u. n says that more than 50000 have left already there heading for neighboring countries like poland, moldova, and hungry. but there has been heartbreak at the border for many of them, with men of military age, separated from their families in order to stay in ukraine. all they have wisdom is what they can carry. people streaming out of ukraine into neighboring countries like poland. this woman and her 3 children watch the last 15 kilometers
