including children whose fathers turned back to fight for that country. ah, i'm a new campus mckinnon. welcome to the program. ukrainian forces have been fighting back against russian assaults on the outskirts of ki, if authorities have urged citizens to help defend the capital guns being handed out to ordinary citizens. and people being urged to make petro poems and resist russian troops attacks an army base located on a main key if avenue. but the assault was repelled, ukrainian military said president of all of them is lensky has denied russian claims that he had fled the castle saying in a social media of video, quote, we will not lay down our weapons. we will defend our state. he has also refused an american officer to leave keith slaughter mill. and d. w correspondent,

nick conley joins us now on the line. he was in keys that he's now moved to another location. nick, tell us how was the night what sits been like where you are and what are you hearing from you cranes capital. so i'm in the she called bits or about 200 club south west of cube took about 10 hours to get here yesterday because all those people trying to get out. we've been in the bomb shelter under the building. we're in now twice last night. foreign going up twice. we haven't had any bombings close to where we are, but definitely a huge anxiety, especially given that there are ukrainian military installations in this region. so this could be a potential target as to keep well extraordinary images on social media of russian units. pretty close to central, keep them even yesterday we were leaving. we passed an error drummed up past the road leading to an area and on the northwestern fringe, the kid where russian helicopters had tried to bring in commandos and
8:03 am
extraordinarily long and protracted fighting going on there. it seems based on a portion of now that the ukrainian forces have re band control of that aerodrome reports of kind of full swag operations elsewhere. russian swimming. a russian soldiers wearing uniforms trying to set up the ground for a kind of more involvement of their forces coming in all across the residential district of kiev. ukrainian authorities saying that those people have been detained and certainly are images on social media of people detained. and on the ground with that arms and legs tied, people you can say are russian agents trying to undermine that resistance? i think definitely this has to be crated together. and i think people went quite may be expecting that bullet ski will be quite as forthright about this that he would stay in keep spite the threats. i think this is actually done
8:04 am
a lot of good for morale, hearing ukraine, people in the bumps, healthy, stay on average worried till of the key and very conscious suburban urban t, but also taking off from the fact that this is taking a lot longer than seam and the russians expected it would. okay, so let's talk about the fact that the lensky is refusing to leave. and he say russian troops are advancing towards key if fast. he's saying he's staying put. why? what message is he trying to send? this is about the ok, this is about showing that they are not going to run. they're not going to roll over. i think you have to remember ukraine is a deep trauma of those events. 2014. how easy it was for russia to take crimea to also to stoke those separate as complex nice. that was a time where you can basically didn't have a functional government off the might revolution. the previous government had gone and the new one hadn't really taken over yet. so i think there's definitely a very strong desire to just not give ground. and i think they also believe that
8:05 am
they can wind it. maybe not in outright well, but in terms of dragging the so long enough, making the course high enough rush done. so russia has come some kind of arrangement for the military. and yes, i think that at some point russia would have to come to then and talk about ending this. i think we've seen unparalleled diplomatic pressure on russia in the recent hours, even in culture, sports and sports turn. what's been counted in russia, russian teams not being invited to things, even popstars, the cultural figures around the world, expressing their feelings about this outrage. so i think there is definitely a feeling that if you can, can stay firm can prevent some kind of panic among the population, prevent a kind of collapse in terms of logistics. then this is actually not going rushes way. i think they believe that now probably the rest of the world seeing rushes intent to them the same way. they've been saying that since russia and crimea and the conflict and on that. alright, the w correspondence, nick connelly,

thanks so much for your report. now back in kia, many residents have taken shelter where they can, the government has handed out thousands of guns to ordinary citizens and his urging them to build petrol bombs to resist the northern outskirts of give the front lines in the russian assault on ukraine's capital volunteers have taken up arms to defend the city, but without heavy defensive weapons, there's only so much they can do. if not enough in lot of school, full daily. got that is not enough and not, not a film thought that i need. this is something thought outnumbered and outgunned, but refusing to quit ukraine's cabinet, sent a message of encouragement on social media laval with them,
8:07 am
but event duped the president. he was here. we're all here who school are military or went to citizens of society are here we do, we're all here defending our independence. our country shall it and it will remain so slow unless glory to our men and women defenders some glory to ukraine. flow green order off. many of those who aren't picking up arms or taking refuge in the cities metro. oh is them way? it's safer under ground. oh, i even woke up to day with the news that there was shelling in the central area. i'm a show. they can even target our house are you on. so it's safer. underground apartment property, also the shelter in our building is not as deep underground as the metro station, but hello john, up a little national, good info. those who want to get out of the city, find roads choked with vehicles,
8:08 am
some out of gas or abandoned by those who continued on foot. the situation at key of central train station doesn't look much better. oh so again with them since we've been trying all day since this morning, as you can see here, it's unrealistic. there's lots of as a dog we can't fit, we're going back to see bianca with him. he has to push through, but how he supposed to do that with a child. the dog is scared, is dangerous. we won't go. and honestly, i don't have the energy to wait for the next one. i just don't. but even getting out of give is no guarantee of safety. many men of fighting age who make it to the border, are being turned back by the ukrainian military and told to report to the front lines. our russia has vetoed a draft un security council resolution that condemned its invasion of ukraine and called on moscow to withdraw troops immediately. 11 countries on the 15 member
8:09 am
council voted in favor while india, china, and the united arab emirates, abstained. and humans have also 11 votes in favor, one against 3 abstention. so it was the result. everyone's expecting russia blocking criticism of its invasion. i'm not surprised that russia voted against russia is keen on continuing its nazi style course of action to the u. s. also slammed russia for it's vito, the secure you can the tell this resolution, but you cannot the toe, our voices. you cannot be told the truth. you cannot veto our principles. you cannot detail the ukrainian people bessler, but moscow's representative said the resolution was one sided. most of those as well. what was left out was the way that the ukranian authorities,
8:10 am
with the encouragement of their western patrons consistently and cynically shirked the responsibility to implement the minsk agreements. the lynchpin, which was a direct dialogue with the residents of the countries east. while the resolution may have been didn't from the start, the ukraine and its allies, there was a small glimmer of hope. they say china is attention demonstrated just how isolated russia is on the international stage in florida. and i'm joined now by d. w. 's chief international editor, richard will kind of write this down for us. richard, thanks to being here. and i'm not a surprise the russia b. take this draft, un security council resolution, but no country voted with it. so does this suggest that person is losing support? well, i think the russians are looking quite isolated off to this vote. as we heard there is seen is quite significant that china abstained rather than supporting it. perhaps we can look at the, i mean, the countries that abstain is interesting to look at those. we can talk about those in just a moment, but not
8:11 am
a single country as with the 15 members supporting it. and, and if you look at some of the individual countries, for example, brazil on where the president bowl so narrow is quite on the same wavelengths as vladimir putin as a kind of new model. sort of all for a terry install leader. i was just recently expressing his solidarity with vladimir putin and just yesterday slapping down his deputy for having expressed a support for you, craig, and saying that's not your business. that's my business as president. despite all of that, brazil voting in support of this resolution rather than for example abstaining, which, which some said was a possibility. so, yeah, russia looking quite isolated. and what's going to be interesting is the next step of the united nations is that this now will be most likely taken up by the general assembly. so with all of the member states of the united nations are no vito's there. so that's going to be kind of
8:12 am
a roll call of the entire world where it stands, where every single country around the world stance on this. so we'll be watching for how that goes. so let's talk or about these, these 3 attentions. as you're saying, china, china, india, and the united arab emirates. yeah. so, i mean, china, 1st of all, we've touched on that. china has been getting closer and closer to russia. the 2 countries kind of forming a closer relationship and trying to push back against what they see is american attempts to shore up. it's a gemini around the world and china often votes with russia on the un security council. the fact that they to abstain just being seen in west held up in the west is, is evidence that china really has concerns about what's happening. and if you watch china messaging in recent days, it has been kind of a little bit divided on the one hand. so signifying support for russia over is demand for security. guarantees from the west opposition to the expansion later on
8:13 am
the other hand, being very clear that it does see ukraine is us over in state who's territorial integrity needs to be supported. so that shows that china, you know, has, is trying to struggle those positions to be some disappointment. i think in the west the india abstain from voting in favor of this. but it will be a huge step for india to vote against russia has a long standing relationship with russia gets most of its defense equipment from russia. so that might have been an unrealistic expectation. indeed to everything it can not to get sort of sucked into into one side of the other. this of this conflict with the rent remote in a cool, the prime minister of india with me putting the other day did say that you wanted the station of hostilities. and then the united arab emirates. well, it's been growing closer to russia in recent years. and, and, but there will be a lot of disappointment in the west city in the united states that the country that
8:14 am
it's, or is an important part in the middle east with stating on this. so being seen to see what kind of fall out that extension, by the way, after all of this, to play the say, really incredible assets. where do we stand now? yes, so we seen this thing as the united nation, so we'll see how that general assembly vote turns out. but we're going to get beginning to get a sense of the international communities attitudes of what's happening here. russia looking quite isolated. the west is looking pretty united. there's some debate about whether the west went far enough in it sanctions but very much the sanctions moves across western countries are being seen as pretty much in lock step. nato is making moves to strengthen the defense of its allies in the region around ukraine. really, the focus now is how far the thing, how fast things go militarily in ukraine, is little doubt that russia is in a strong position to defeat ukrainian military. how could he does it go?
8:15 am
what happens next is that there's been some talk of talks between ukraine in russia . do they come to anything? do they get going to really the focus is back on, on the ground in ukraine. what happens next? can i just briefly ask you about this idea of talks between russia and ukraine? i mean, this seems slightly extraordinary, but do you think that could be a chance to something like this? my, i think, i think is too early to say. but the indications from the russians yesterday that they would be prepared to help hold talks with ukrainians, but you know, on significant conditions and that those talks would be about ukraine giving in and also, you know, talk of a declaration of, of neutrality. we don't know, it's too hard to say, i think, you know, in the dynamics of this war situation, whether those talks to take place. but, but that was a new development yesterday that of course watching closely.
