which threatens the world order. and germany also bows to pressure over swift, berlin, now on board. as the you and other western powers, announce a coordinated move to limit russian access to the global payment system. ah, i'm amin use if welcome to the program. ukraine says russian troops have blown up a gas pipeline near its 2nd largest city hockey eve. as rushes invasion of the country enters its 4th day and near the capital key of an oil depos a blaze after being hit by a missile strike. residence in the city, i spent the 3rd night hunkered down under ground. like these people in a bomb shelter. ukraine says a radioactive waste sight near keith was also hit by shelling. but so far, no threat leaks has been detected. i'm joined in the studio now by dw or border

hannah, whom all has blue, has been monitoring the news coming out of ukraine and t of specifically hannah. what can you tell us about the latest developments in the capital city? well, it's again under really heavy attack. we're talking air raids, rocket attacks, gunfire. heavy shelling fights on the ground and there is even an aisle the pull that's been on fire for the last few hours. and there was 40 kilometers south of care. but still in that region, and it's quite difficult to confirm exactly what and where and when everything is going on because there is limited communication, it's all happening so fast and bear in mind everyone there is obviously just trying to stay safe and in shelter. but i think russia is really going in for the kill here. they want to take over the capital city. they tried last night. they were unsuccessful. so they're going to be really throwing in all of their forces going
5:03 am
in field for us. and it's going to be really tough night for people who are in kiev . and just a reminder, i mean, care of as a city of almost 3000000 residents. and these are people who, up until a few days ago, we're still going about their everyday lives. probably not really thinking that it was going to actually come to this and they are now hunker down, staying in air, raid shelters bomb shelters. like we just saw there with no lights, probably limited communication to family and loved ones. so this is really quite unimaginable. now many ukrainians are fleeing as we know, but others are staying behind in order to help the war effort. what are they doing? so 1st, of course, men between the ages of 18 and 60 aren't allowed to leave. they have to stay behind in case they need to be there to fight. but other people are also remaining behind, probably because their whole maybe they think that am ukraine really stands
5:04 am
a chance against russia. and they're building shelter is creating safe spaces for people. but also gearing up to fight is the main thing. they're arming themselves with weapons and i think probably president zalinski has really played a big role and actually pushing morale in the country right now. he's staying behind. he refused us offer it to evacuate. and i of the country. so i think the fact that he's, are, they're willing to be on the front line for people, is really exactly piercing morale for people in the country who have to stay there either by choice or because they're all i to leave. now outside ukraine, big crowds have turned out in the show of solidarity with ukrainians, especially those in the capital city. we have a report now on the thousands of, of, of russians living abroad, who say vladimir prudence decision to launch the invasion doesn't represent them.
5:05 am
let's take a look, taking to the streets with blue and yellow flags, and calls for solidarity from crowds of people in cities around the world. ukrainians, living abroad have joined with supporters of ukraine o, calling for more help to defend ukraine against russia's aggression in tokyo residence called on japan to step up actions to stop russian president vladimir putin and end the war. oh, in several australian cities, people also raised their voices, my family's allowing to you and they being hiding in the shelter, waiting to be bombarded and he died. rushing to notice the dark military stations. they attack childcare centers, hospital schools, any shelters, they search for those shelters. people hiding men's good. i don't know what else i
5:06 am
can do. i'm try to gather as many people year as possible. 3 year old boy. we need to help from either countries alongside ukrainians abroad. some russians overseas are also joining the rallies to publicly show. they don't support putin's war for many ukrainians, far from home, the support is heartening, but the feelings of helplessness are still overwhelming. ah, everybody scared everybody suffering, the women and children are not agreeing to leave their man behind. the men are fighting and it's, it's, it's scary and is devastating for everybody. in the night from friday to saturday, it was widely reported that russian troops were about to take over ukraine's capital give. but they didn't. i am like our ukrainian

military because they're defending our country and i am sure that they will also be in right now we face one of the strongest armies in the world, the russia and important. he's not a human being. well, the fact that ukraine is still defending itself against russia's aggressive invasion is something giving others hope world wide displays of solidarity there with the ukrainians. but there's also some people who have taken concrete steps to help the ukrainians defend against the russian division. yet, i think perhaps one of the most interesting examples of that is the am hacked of ist group anonymous and who have been laying pretty low for a while. but they've declared cyber attacks on putin and russia. and now they actually hacked official website,
5:08 am
including the russian ministry of defense. so those websites were down for several hours at a time. but they also managed to hack national tv. and so instead of rolling news coverage on numerous channels, there were actually at they were playing ukrainian music. and i think that was really an attempt to send a message to people who are in russia who potentially don't have that much access to what's actually going on. and another, i guess high profile example would be that elan mosque, the finder of space x has activated or his personnel commercial network of satellites. so that if russia attacks and their internet coverage in ukraine, then they will style still have access to internet via these satellites. that don't require fiber optic cable obviously. hm. but apart from that, looking at just everyday people. i mean, i'm seeing all of our social media people across europe, but especially in poland, they're offering their own homes to refugees for people who will be clean ukraine
5:09 am
and don't have a place to stay, don't have shelter and, and as well as that, again, all of my personal social media channels, i'm seeing people and posting links for fundraisers and cried funding trying to raise money so that that can go towards the people who will really need it. and i think, you know, these messages of love and support are really something that we should take away as you know, really the only positive that we can from this situation right now, am, i will just say for anyone who is considering may be donating. and if they have their capacities to do so, just make sure that you're checking the right length because and you should really be donating through official organizations that you can trust, right? don't get caught up in a scam, but a lot of solidarity. they're truly an outpouring world wide things for that d. w reporter and hannah, who will many people across ukraine have sought safety under

ground thousands who are still in the capital. i've been forced to do the same to shelter from russian attacks. fortunately, there's a ready build system of tunnels deep below the city. the metro with another night of air raids ahead, the people of give head to the metro gives underground public transport system is now a network of bomb shelters. for days now, people have come here to seek refuge from russian rockets and bombs. i was waiting for a bus to evacuate me. our company had organized our evacuation and rented a bus to pick us up. but now the bus can't enter the capital. i stayed at another station 1st and now have moved here to service bomb shelters is exactly what the on the ground system was designed for. it was built after world

war 2, when the soviet union feared a nuclear war. the deepest station is more than 100 meters under the surface. it's very safe here. i think. i don't know whether it really is, but at least it feel safe here. after the russian attacks began, many people fled the city, but some are refusing to leave. for the key of his being protect it though i come down here to wait until it's safe to go out. i have no other plans. i trust our army and i trust that it will end. well. i have no desire to leave keith or you crane about it's a particular irony that the 1st time the shelters are being used is under an attack,

ordered from moscow. the former soviet capital that once ordered this underground network to be built. when russia and ukraine were part of the same country, well, in a major shift in foreign policy, germany has agreed to support ukraine with weapons as it resists russia's invading forces. berlin backtracked on a long running ban on weapons exports to war zones, and says it will now send empty tank. weapons and missiles policy shift brings germany into line with other western allies supplying arms to ukraine. the decision came after chancellor, olaf shows met leaders from poland and lithuania, to discuss tougher sanctions against russia. ahead of the meeting, poland prime minister was highly critical of german thing. berlin's previous decision to only send 5000 helmets to ukraine was a joke of him. i'm joined now by thomas and he is a member of the german parliament for the conservative c s u party, which sits in the opposition and the vice chair of the foreign affairs committee.
5:13 am
mister and the, the german government has long argued that it won't send weapons to conflict zones because of a historic responsibility as the word has been used. is that responsibility over now? no, the responsibility is, is not the or no. but i think what we derive from our history is basically there's possibility to protect the democratic. and so we're in state against aggression. and in the beginning, it was always said, we need to keep up the diplomatic channels and therefore we do not deliver weapon. but i think that is definitely over now. and so we need to do everything to support the creating people and they are in the military and are it's a good decision and get that the government took that decision today to deliver weapons? well, many can argue that aggression against the sovereign state is one of the reasons why most conflicts happen. so what is different this case?
5:14 am
well, i think it's in front of, of our door. basically it's in the middle of europe is aggression. you could never think of even last week, and therefore if there is sponsibility also from germany to lead in europe and china on the other countries delivering weapons. and that is an absolute necessary action. a turning point in history as a chancellor show, it's called it. now, if you have, any analysts actually believe ukraine can hold off russia's military indefinitely. so what does germany hope to achieve by sending these weapons now? i mean, the aggression need to stop and i think the you can army and the people doing, i'm harrowing chop in resisting the rest of the aggression. and of course,
5:15 am
germany stands with the korean and need to stand with the korean. and that's why we need to support in any way we can do and that includes sending with military equipment, money on one side, but also supporting and leading all the decisions on sanctions on the other side. some have called it symbolic rather than strategic. would you disagree with that? well, i mean it's, it's a hot war and many countries have decided to deliver now the equipment over and, and whether that helps at the end make the difference. this is up to the situation in ukraine. it's not up on us to decide whether this is a symbolic or, or real need. that is of course.
