very clearly didn't work, but there's a 2nd challenge, which is that they haven't really briefed a lot of the units on when they were supposed to be going exactly how they were supposed to be operating. and so we've seen some real bad coordination between the russian fighting units. now that they realize that this is going to be a hard fight. they have this operational toll as they start to shake outs and sets up their artillery. and we're probably going to see them starting to fights in conventional, lana, which uses a lot more find out that will be more effective. it's worth noting that the russians hadn't committed all of that troops. and that's the 1st week. so they have many more units that they push in. do you think ukraine's military can keep up the fight against reinforcement being brought in by putting i think the ukrainians are going to fight for as long as they can. i don't see any chance of surrendering the 1st challenge is whether they run out to that issue that the 2nd one is that as the russians at fonts,
6:16 pm
they will cut off the lines and supply and will ukrainians will not be able to do is move that troops around for a position to position, which means that what we will say is the conflict to cherry. i tend to assess it up and sieges of positional flights that will be very, very intense and in which civilians will bear very hard for us. what do you think western countries in ukraine's allies around the globe can do to support the country in a scenario like that? firstly, the economic russia. secondly, i think there is a need to publicize what is happening to russians and to make them understand what is happening to their all me and what their army is doing, including conducting war crimes. and certainly i think it's very important that we continue to supply the credit. so work out how to get those supplies across the ukrainian border so that they don't run out of critical equipment. check what lang, research fellow for land war for at the royal united services institute in london.

thank you so much for all those insights. the united nations opened an emergency session of ed's general assembly with a minute silence for those killed during russia's invasion of ukraine. in secretary general, antonia quoterush warren russia, that the fighting must stop and had strong words for as president vladimir putin. after he put his nuclear forces on high alert, we are facing a treasure before you could aid, but also a major regional, crazy, potentially disastrous implications. what household yesterday,
6:18 pm
russian nuclear forces would boots on high alert disease, a chilling development. the new idea of a nuclear conflict is simply inconceivable. must sink and justify the use of nuclear weapons. it's very in our corresponding stuff and simon's in washington 7. the meeting is still going on, but so far, what's your takeaway? ah my take away so far as that it is a another emergency assembly meeting of the general assembly and that the overwhelming majority of the speakers who go to the, to the pulled they are and, and say what their finger, their faults sharing their faults and the government's thoughts about what happens in ukraine and what russia is doing. there is, of course, again, states. so russia is getting an ear full. we have seen the russian ambassador to the you and speaking we have seen the ukranian heard the ukranian ambassador to the
6:19 pm
un speak, and i think he set the tone for anybody who followed after him. exactly. he gave an extremely foul, powerful speech and we actually have an excerpt as that here. let's have a listen. if you green does not see why invention you survive, international peace will not survive. if ukraine does not survive, the united nations will not survive, have no illusions if ukraine does not say why, we cannot be surprised if democracy fails next. now we can save ukraine, save the united nations, save democracy and defend the values we believe in. and that ukrainian sa farthing for and being with their lifes,
6:20 pm
chef on an emotional plane for help there from the ukranian ambassador to the united nations. will we see the international community standing united against the aggressor? ah, chances are that there will be so i think this is a, this is of course really strong or terminology and strong words from the increase in the message to the u. n. n. a. or of course, he's right, this has all of this, or the root russian aggression against the ukraine. a sending troops and bombarding big cities in, in the ukraine is cetera, has an impact on, on, on the world community, on the un. sure. the u. n. will not be the when general assembly will not be able to do anything on a but voting on a resolution to stop what's happening right now. but um, it is the non aligned world which is actually addressed here. the western world is
6:21 pm
pretty much unified against russia and against the aggression. so they're standing with ukraine, the none aligned world. that means all other countries who are not accounted for being in the western or in the eastern part of affiliation. they are the ones who will make a difference here in terms of being united with the west or not being united with the west against russia and the aggression against ukraine. this resolution really gets the broad st pour it. it's proponents are hoping for what would be the implications for russia a direct implication on straight value, none because it is just a resolution and russia could potentially schrock this off. they already in, or russia is already in or facing a lot of trouble in terms of economic sanctions, sanctions increase. and militarily, as we both know, it's not it's,
6:22 pm
it's not easy going for russia. so there's in internal, a problems for put to now growing in terms of pressure is at ro, however, um, there will be resolution possibly at the end of the week, there will be a vote. it will or possibly hammer russia and clearly identify russia as the aggressor and not in any way of form anything else but that i'm but real consequence is in 2nd and 3rd degree levels. and that means that again, more, more intense it economic sanctions and hardship with that, with those sanctions for russia. because even this, again, on 2nd and 3rd level, this non aligned world is then pulling potentially with the west and does not allow russia to participate to do business. still not even with those countries. so that's gonna be tough then. and there is the chance for the un general assembly with the resolution to really unify most of those 193 country body.
6:23 pm
let's talk a bit more about the u. n. particularly the security council where russia has, of course, veto power. the un defines the security council's responsibility as an a, quote, the maintenance of international peace and security. but faith with this war is really not much, it can do at this point to fulfill its mission. is there? no, you're absolutely right. and, you know, it's absurd, but russia, the ambassador, the russian ambassador to the un is actually chairing this security council in russia has the presidency of the security council. so this 15 nation body, 5 permanent members and 10 temporary members, they met before. we both know this a few days back now another to day later in the day here, local time in new york, another emergency meeting of the security council. and maybe there will be, again, very, very, a harsh, a debate and language used and pointing out with russia does. and how most of those
6:24 pm
are, or all of those security council members, or see what russia is doing. but again, this takes a veto from russia, and this will come by the un ambassador to the u. s. by the u. n. a best of russia . and then there will be no consequence. again, this is sort of symbolic and just on a 2nd or 3rd level impact full and effective. and that means unify unify most countries, or most countries around the world against what russia does a in ukraine right now, that is the only real world impact un security council resolution slash decisions or a general assembly. resolution can half he w correspondence, different simons in washington. many thanks. now ukrainian civilians have been helping to resist this invasion with their lives turned upside down. people
6:25 pm
are collecting donations and gathering supplies for the army. t w correspond him and he has bowling. i met some of the volunteers helping refugees and soldiers in the city of benita, southwest of keith. they bring everything they can spare clothes, food money, as refugees, move west and soldiers east to it's the front. here in vineyard certain century ukraine, people are organizing aid for both on natalia who doesn't want to give her last name. leave the youth center. in peacetime, she used to organizing outings and summer cams. now at war, she's busy directing volunteers and sorting donation. when you call in the us of you so i never imagined i'd be doing any of this. i'm
6:26 pm
learning all the time. we are improving our work every minute we are getting there before should the minutes and center ukraine has so far been bad, heavy fighting or the air raid alarms are frequent but like everywhere in the country, people here have been under a shock since russia attacked. now everyone was to contribute. a wave of solidarity is running through society. natalia is out and about her on the clock. the nightly curfew is the only time she's not on site. and the more just that if they don't, mom brought the icon to the home doing nothing and just waiting bush. i'm also definitely not leaving. this is our home that we love, homer and we're not going anywhere shy unless it's not only about donating goods. many also contribute that time making come
6:27 pm
a flash and it's for the army. green and brown clothes are separated from the donations and cut into pieces. the rest is a lot of handy work. the ukrainian army has been at war for 8 years, still lacking many basic items including protective equipment and many here have somebody at the front, a husband, brother, sister, or in natalia's case, a 19 year old son as of as orca. yeah. awesome. and we are in touch, i can talk to him once a day. it's those few minutes that i'm waiting for all day yet you guys the was being active is also a way for many here to deal with their worries. and in another development president of a lot of mirrors, the lensky has asked for ukraine to join the european union without delay. he's as, as country seeking protection and equality me as well. that was beaver up high
6:28 pm
school. so you shall need it. we asked the european union to admit ukraine immediately, according to the new special procedure metal that we are grateful to the partners who stand with us. but our goal is to be with all europeans and most importantly, to be equal. yeah, sure, that's fair. it's this part of it. i'm sure we deserve it. mm hm. i'm sure it is possible. yes, beverly, she says it was little. let's bring any w corresponding band that he got in brussels band. is it really possible? how likely is the you to respond to that call and it made ukraine as a member not so fast. that was the reaction by shying michelle, the president of that you can. so there a presentation of the member states. he said there are different opinions on this application was the president signed already, their member states, i'd say okay,
6:29 pm
let's do it now because we have more times and procedures don't matter. but the majority of states, i would say, is sister on the side saying of there are procedures you have to adhere to. an application process is very lengthy, can take years. and in the ukraine already has an association agreement since 2014 and place. and since then, nothing actually happened. there are some, well talks are ready to bring ukraine closer to the u. n. and this assertion agreement was signed when russia attacked in the ukraine 1st, when they annexed crimea in 2014. so it's a highly symbolic step, but i doubt that you will take it, but tomorrow cillian ski vill applied to the european parliament via video link and next week this is a summit and inform the summit scheduled in paris and then the leaders can talk
6:30 pm
about this application at your commission president was left on the line yesterday, said that ukraine belongs to us, and we want them in why this mixed messaging and my her spokesperson today. her said it was not meant that way. it was her, maybe it than hurt in ukraine. she did a very short interview and said, ukraine is in, and what she meant, the spokesperson says, the re crane belongs to europe, but she didn't mean immediate membership. her so of, and there's also fear that maybe admitting ukraine right now would even more complicate the, the conflict of the prospects to come to terms of russia in negotiations. so the you is still, you're hesitant and reluctant to do that. all right? yeah, rush, i would certainly not like the side of that you.
